+ 3 moreDescription of Work: I had my roof replaced. The company did a good job on the actual roof itself, however, I did have a pretty major issue, in my mind, before they started the work on the actual day and they left some damage to the front of my house when they were done. They resolved the issue with only a little grumbling on the first day, but it made me very glad that I had taken the day off from work, even though they had told me I didn't have to. | |I had signed a contract for HD Timberline roofing, with GAF Weather Watch Waterproof Ice and Water Shield. I also choose to pay extra to have GAF Deck Armor installed under the shingles and had added to the contract that it was to be installed a certain way according to the specific manufacturer's instructions, and I was to get a GAF Cobra ridge vent. | |When they arrived and started to prepare, I noticed that they had not brought the GAF Weather Watch or the GAF Cobra ridge vent. The workers had some other unknown brand. I asked how they were going to install the Deck Armor and they told me how, which was not in accordance with the manufacturer's specs or what I had included in the contract, which specifically said that a plastic capped nail or plastic capped staple had to be used. | |I immediately called the salesman, who said, about the ridge vent, that I was lucky because the product that they had brought was just as good and the Cobra would have cost me more. To which I replied that it wouldn't have cost me more, since it was what was proposed in contract, by them. Then he said that the unknown Ice and Water shield product was just as good, and that the manufacturer only meant that you had to use the specified kind of staple or nails on the Deck Armor if you were going to leave the roof exposed for a while. I am an architect and can read the manufacturer's requirements and since the manufacture said nothing of the kind in it's literature and specifically otherwise, I insisted that they bring the right kind of fasteners and the Cobra ridge vent and the GAF Weather Watch. The salesman grumbled, had to move his golf clubs when he arrived with the right products, but did bring them promptly and the installers subsequently did a good job. | |The work turned out to be tough because I had a roof that had been built of fairly strong materials back in the 50's, not plywood and it was very hot, but they brought a large crew, they worked all day until it got dark and part of the next day. We did we did find one man kind of passed out on the side of my house with, what we thought, was a little heatstroke and a bloody nose. Everyone else was ignoring him, but we brought him inside and gave him some ice water and stopped his nosebleed until he recovered a little. In any case, they did everything they were supposed to and repaired a few patches where the roof had had some leaks. They did the job for the price agreed on. The step flashing around the chimney is not elegant, but I think it's okay. | |They did back the truck into the light over my garage door and crushed it, but I bought a new light and they sent someone to install it a few days later. They left a lot of nails in my driveway the first night, thank goodness I thought to look. They also made a mess out the front of my house when they threw the shingles off the roof. It left black marks all over the front of the house, plus on steps I had just had repaired. I called about it and they had someone there the next day, who scrubbed the house and repainted some spots (fortunately I had some paint that matched the house and a ladder) although one small dent remains. | |I am satisfied that I got a good result in the end, but I was very unhappy that they tried to substitute what I believe were cheaper products for what was specified in the contract. If I had not been home and so aware, I would not have gotten what I contracted for and the Deck Armor would not have been correctly installed. | |The working crew, however, was very nice, very hard working, seemed very experienced and I was comfortable that they knew what they were doing and were doing a good job. I said that I probably wouldn't use them again, not because of the quality of the work in the end, but because of the issues surrounding the job. Their price for the roof was in line with or just on the higher side of 3 other bids that I had gotten, so they were average/high average in price. They didn't try to sell extras, they scheduled promptly after the contract was signed and showed up right on time. I don't think you'd get a bad job with them, just might not be quite what you thought you were going to get.
