I think there was an attempt to milk the system as it was an insurance job due to severe hail damage. On the second day of the job he told me there would be a supplemental due to having to remove a second layer. He acted as though this was news, but we had discussed that there was a second layer during the quote. He asked for $2,100 to remove this layer. The total original cost of everything was $9,800. I thought this was a bit odd, being 1/4 of the total cost just to remove. The adjuster stated he has never had anyone make such an outlandish request and not be able to provide valid reasoning or pictures. In the end the adjuster found that the cost was approx. $600, not $2,100. The roofers took my old snow guard (200 sq feet) to the scrap yard and must have gotten a large chunk of change for that (that was clearly separated from the trash). Did not offer anything and acted as if it was outlandish for me to inquire. They ended the Friday before Labor Day. When I got home I noticed my gutter had been bent from their ladder, they bent my dog pen door, broke my flood light, left over 100 tar marks on my siding--including handprints, left pieces of the old roof everywhere, there was a razor blade in the middle of my walk-way, and left their cigarette butts, water bottles and equipment in my front yard over a holiday weekend. I also found over 275 nails (some still attached to large metal washers). In my dog pen, right outside the pen, in my walkway, in my flower bed, resting on my front steps, laying on my decorative bricks. I mean they were all over and in noticeable places. My front steps awning had a droop where water collected and got underneath the plywood. I notified them but they did not return for over a week. They took another week to get the work fixed up. All in all the work was completed on 9/22/14. He offered to give back about $1,000. Aesthetically, the roof does look nice, too soon to know about the quality.

It went very well overall; I would definitely use this contractor again.
Description of Work: Jim Jewett was highly professional, very responsive, knowledgeable, and accomodating. He and his team did an outstanding job ripping off two layers of old roofing on my very large roof, replacing dated or damaged sub roofing plywood and materials, and replacing my roof with a lifetime warranty shingle. Additionally, they performed chimney repair and gutter installation. All of the work was done with high quality and timely. Cleanup was outstanding (no complaints from me or the neighbors). I would definitely use Joseph Jewett Home Improvement again.

He continued to add on to the original estimate. I researched the kind of shingles I wanted and asked him to get these but he said he did not want to deal with that supplier. I later found out that the supplier would not do business with him without cash. I had another roofer go and place the order so I could get the shingles I want which cost me another $200. He re-installed the gutters incorrectly. He did not extend the downspout as he said he would. He did not pitch the gutters as he was supposed to. His work has caused leaking. A report on his work revealed, ice membrane was incorrectly installed everywhere except the house. Some shingles were not installed correctly and are buckling and lifting. Along valley of roof shingles were incorrectly weaved and no support shingles were installed. The nails were put in incorrectly allowing the shingles to lift as well.
Description of Work: He came and removed the old roof, and put on a new roof on.
