In 2010, a year after my husband was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, he and I met with Scott McClurg to discuss how to modify our home to accommodate our changing needs. My sister and brother-in-law had been extremely pleased with renovations McClurg had done at their residence 12 years prior and again in 2003, and many of the members of the community of ALS patients and their families, with whom we met monthly following my husband's diagnosis, recommended that we contact McClurg to create our handicap accessible space. Once we realized that building an addition to our modest, two-story home was the most logical choice for us, we felt compelled to work with the company we believed was most qualified to do the job well. Overwhelmed and unsure of our needs, our family was guided through the decision-making and construction process with ease. My husband, who typically insisted on being in charge, felt so confident in the ability of every craftsman who worked on our project that he readily relinquished control. The contractor was respectful of our requests concerning the time that work would commence each morning, diligent in keeping our house as clean as possible every day that workers were on the premises, and consistent in his efforts to keep us apprised of the progress being made. The addition, completed on schedule, became the perfect sanctuary for my husband. It included a closet and bathroom, was large enough to house the increasing amount of medical equipment he required without resembling a hospital room, and contained an elevated fireplace, suggested by McClurg's project consultant, which provided warmth and an ambiance that my husband enjoyed so much, at first from his recliner, then from his wheelchair, and finally from his hospital bed. A sliding glass door to the ramp allowed any available sunlight to bathe the room, making everyone who entered smile. As I explained in a letter I wrote to Scott McClurg after my husband lost his battle with ALS, our addition was the brightest spot during our darkest days, both literally and figuratively, and I will forever be grateful to everyone at McClurg for creating such a beautiful, comforting space. One day, after my husband's condition had deteriorated to the point that he needed a bipap machine to breathe, we lost power during an autumn storm. In panic mode, I called 911, and after the emergency workers set up a generator on our deck, but were unable to restore electricity to the addition, I called McClurg to ask for the phone number of the electician who had worked on our project. Within a half hour, the electrician arrived at our home, followed a few minutes later by Scott McClurg. They demonstrated, once again, how to reset the circuit breaker, and Scott then assured me that he was always just a phone call away. I found McClurg Remodeling and Construction Services to be outstanding in terms of expertise, attention to detail, and customer service. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the company to anyone seeking quality work.

A few minutes late for our appointment, but not a big deal to us. Very courteous and polite and really listened to what we wanted to do in the bathroom. Offered alternatives and general recommendations while at appointment. He advised he would do a more specific breakdown and research other ideas for us and let us know. We received a lump sum general cost via email requesting to sit with us to go over specifics. As the limp sum estimate was out of our price range we were willing to spend, we did not meet with them further. Very professional and we have no doubt that their product and services would be nothing less then perfect, however we weren't willing to pay the price tag associated with it.

The contactor was always on time and always professional. This included the sales rep, the project manager, and the workers and worker supervisor. I had an issue with one of the larger boards that was installed because it had a joint in the walk path. The came out, looked at it and agreed. They replaced the board within a week.
Description of Work: The contractor built a two tiered deck in my back yard. The top deck was approximately 8'X10'. The lower deck was approximately 20'X12'. They also built a smaller deck for exit out my garage. The deck size was approximately 4'X6'.

The estimator convinced me to pay by the hour as he said it was a small enough job. He underestimated every aspect of the job, the contractors were constantly outside smoking, they did a portion of the job wrong after the foreman told them how to do it, and they charged me for redoing their mistakes. I finally asked them to leave before the job was completed and they were upset when I complained.

Response from McClurg Remodeling
We have not had any contact with this client since 2008. However, in response to the above: We are sorry we were unable to meet your expectations in regard to the service we provided in August of 2008. Our team of Project Consultants and Carpenters are made up of professional individuals who take pride in their work. We strive to maintain a competitive price while still meeting customer expectations, NYS codes and regulations, and our own quality standards. In our 36 years of service to Central New York we always strive for the best quality, service, and most importantly dedication to our clients.
I contacted McClurg to have someone give me an estimate for repair of water damage. The estimate was going to include roof repair/replacement, drywall, floor, carpet and we needed to submit it to our insurance company. The woman who answered the phone took my information and said I should speak to a project manager, because of the scope of the job. The man that I spoke to was very professional. However, McClurg wanted me to pay a $500, non refundable deposit, towards the job, just to come and give me an estimate. I understand that their time is valuable and the man told me that after a recent storm, they only got a few jobs out of a large number of estimates. Yikes. Sorry guys. I'm not going to pay you $500 to give me an estimate and then loose the money if we decide to use another contractor.

I am sorry we were unable to meet your expectations in regard to our insurance estimating process. The deposit we charge when doing an insurance estimate is credited directly to the project once the work begins; it is not an additional charge. Insurance estimates are very detailed and very time consuming. It is necessary to request a minimal deposit to ensure the time spent by both the customer and the company is helpful and more importantly, useful. We strive to maintain a competitive price while still meeting customer requirements, NYS codes and regulations, and our own quality standards.

Estimates were received for the above work as follows: Contractor 1: $2,700 Contractor 2: $2,800 Contractor 3: $4,100 Contractor 4 : Between $10,000 - $12,000. The estimator for Contractor 4, McClurg Construction was told that his estimate was MUCH higher than everyone else, with the best quotes below $3k. It was made clear that I just wanted a shower stall, not a custom shower. He stated that McClurg was not the lowest, but the best. He understood that his quote was about 400% higher. Contractor 1 performed the work and performed a fine job. They were also licensed plumbers and fixed multiple plumbing issues in the house at no extra charge. October 27th update: After posting this on Angies LIst, Scott McClurg, the President of the company stopped by to apologize for the high estimate. He states that the estimator intended to do additional work, even though I told him not to.
Description of Work: I received an estimate for a bathroom remodel: specifically to remove the existing shower and install a new shower stall.

It went very well. They were very easy to reach & I was able to get an appointment right away. The rep wore a shirt with the company logo and was dressed casually, yet professionally. I was initally concerned that my job was too small & they wouldn't be interested, but he said McClurg has a special division of their business that caters specifically to small home improvement & fix jobs. The contractor took precise measurements, listened to what I wanted, made suggestions about (window) style. I liked that he didn't criticize the age or condition of my existing window (which I have had other contractors do!) He also gave me detailed information about their company (very nice color brochure!), explained the full range of their services and in my particular case with the window, he told me the manufacturer of the window that would be installed so I know it is a quality product. He outlined their costing process so I knew exactly what I was paying for. Within a few days, he submitted a job proposal, as promised. I thought the pricing was reasonable for the job as compared to other contractors in this area. He fully explained the work process so I would know what to expect on installation day. He also left his business card and said I could call anytime if I had questions. I highly recommend McClurg based on my experiences so far.

I called in June for someone to come and look at my front porch. Masonry needed replacing or repair. I wanted an estimate as I have used this company in the past. They are expensive but reliable. They called with a time to meet for the following week and husband made arrangements to leave work a little early to meet him as 5pm is the latest they will come. He calls the day of the appointment and leaves a message that they don't do that kind of work. Surprising.................... as they build home additions. He left the name and # of someone else to call for the job. I don't know why they didn't tell me they didn't want the job when I initially called and explained what I wanted an estimate on. Waiting until the last minute to cancel was inconsiderate at best.
excellent workmen, very reasonable cost and professional work

I contacted the company's handyman services to get an estimate on a small (5 x8) pressure treated deck to replace my front steps. I am aware that McClurg has a reputation for costing more than other contractors, but I wasn't impressed with some of the independent contractors that had submitted bids, so thought the higher cost might be justified. "Paul" came to my house on 4/11 , took the info on what I was envisioning, snapped a few pictures, and said I would have the estimate for the project within a week. He advised me the company had just completed a very similar project in Auburn that had turned out well. I advised him I worked in Auburn 2 days a week, and requested the location of the project so I could drive by the home. He stated he would need the owners permission ( for me to look at the house from the street???) I thought that strange, especially after he was the one to bring the topic into our conversation, but let the matter drop and waited for the estimate on my 5 x8 pressure treated deck with 1 railing and skirting. Two weeks later I was still waiting. I contacted the offices and spoke with Paul. The estimate just happened to be on its way out in the next day's mail (!). I was very surprized to learn that they estimated this project at $4600.00. I finally realized that they had absolutely no interest in taking this job on, I thanked Paul for his time and proceeded to continue interviewing, eventually having the deck, railing, and skirting in place, and well done, for less than $1000.00
Description of Work: Nothing. I elected to have another contractor complete the job after I (finally) received the estimate from McClurg.

They were horribly expensive, almost 7 times the prices of other providers. They estimated that the cost of the job would be around $15000 and also said they required a permit. I called the zoning permit department in the city and spoke with someone and asked him if I needed a permit to get repair work and this gentleman said yes which was strange because I have worked on many houses in the area and have never needed a permit. I asked how much the permit would cost and it was going to be $700 plus a $25 service fee. I then consulted a friend who is in the same industry and he said he has never needed a permit. I informed them that they were giving false information and that I could not afford to get the work done with them. I came to find out that the city was recommending this company. They ended up not doing any work for me.
Description of Work: They were recommened by a roofer because they didn't do the kind of framing work that needed to be done. So that is how I found this company.

I am sorry we were unable to meet your pricing & design expectations. We do try to provide a competitive price while still meeting customer requirements, and our own quality standards. Our pricing was related to total replacement of the structure in question. When we are doing any structural repair in the City Of Syracuse we do pull a permit as per their requirements. Based on the scope of the project that we felt most appropriate for the repair to be structurally adequate, a permit would have been required.

While they were professional and courteous, the representative didn't listen to what we wanted which a was simple straightforward addition of a screen house. He seemed intent on selling us what they "do" rather than what we needed. Basically, it seemed as if they only do additions one way, there way and it was approximately $50,000 more than the other two. I would not use them or ask for a quote again.

The first time I met with the salesman I expressed a fear that this job would lead to even more problems. For example, cutting into the living room wall which had a certain textured look and would be hard to duplicate. He assured me that they would take care of everything. They did and I couldn't have been more pleased. The total time for the job was about a month and each day I came to trust their professionalism more and more. I was concerned about the estimate as it was considerably higher than some of the others I received, but I felt that I wanted a licensed electrician and master plumber to do the work instead of a one man do-it-all worker. I'll never know how it would have turned out if done by someone else, but McClurg did a fantastic job and it was worth the extra cost.
Description of Work: They remodeled a bathroom that was badly in need of help (in an 83 year-old house). They tore the bathroom down to the studs, replaced all the plumbing and wiring, then built a new shower area including bench, grab bars, and included stationary and hand-held shower heads. They tiled the shower area and the floors and part of the walls in the rest of the bathroom. Then they installed the vanity, toilet, and cabinet. The rest of the walls were painted. The salesman went with me to order the components, the head carpenter was very communicative so the finished bathroom was as I had wanted it. He made adjustments as needed and came back to put up a towel rack and robe hooks after the job was done. The tiler did a terrific job in placing tiles to have the look I was after. The plumber also updated the pipes in the basement to prevent further leaking and increase the water pressure. The painter did an amazing job in repairing a wall that needed to be cut into in order to access and change pipes. The textured wall was original to the house and he was able to match the look. All the workman were very careful and left the house extremely clean every day.
