I contacted EJ's Contractors for an emergency repair to a leaky roof. Ed met me at the house at the time promised to look at the repair needed. He examined the roof from the inside as well as outside. Ed clearly explained what needed to be done and provided a detailed quote for the work. Ed completed the work on time and was able to match the existing shingle color perfectly. The roof was only six years old but matching shingle color is not always easy. I will definitely use this contractor for any future work. Very pleased.

Great! We received quotes from 6 or 7 roofing companies and EJ Contractor's quote was very competitive and his recommendations on Angie's List were excellent. We were very happy and have recommended him to others. Would use him again in a heart beat.

The owner was heading out of town for vacation, but sent his crew over to first inspect and make sure it was actually a roof problem, then shovel off my roof. When the owner returned to town he stopped by to inspect the roof and make sure no repairs were needed. I was very happy with his response time and work. I thought the price was fair, equal to other quotes.
Description of Work: I had a roof leak due to snow/ice backup. He removed the buildup and inspected for damage.

plain and simple, provider never returned my phone calls, when I was clearly interested in hiring him, in fact when I spoke to him to tell him I found another to do the job he could not have cared less, he didn't apologize or do anything to try and keep my business, iwould NEVER recommend this guy and I find it hard to believe you have him on this site with so many good reviews, therefore I take it very personally and I believe your site is flawed

[member name removed]- I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I met you at the house and we discussed all you plans for the project. You later called me and told me that I had the job, so I thought we'd be good to go in a week or so when I had you on my schedule. A couple days ago, you SHOCKED me when you called and informed me that you were using someone else. I'm not a high pressure vindictive salesman, so I didn't argue with you at that point. In retrospect, maybe you wanted me to prove that I wanted the job. I'm just a surprised as you are, I was expecting to do this project

We looked a about 6 different roofers in the area. All seemed very professional. After careful consideration, we selected Ed Purcell and EJ Contractors based on reviews, quoted price, and Ed taking his time explaining what exactly was to be done and educating me on roofing. Also, Ed is a big SU football fan. Unable to decide which shingle colors we wanted, Ed came by the house and nailed examples of the 3 shingles we were contemplating onto our roof, which made the decision easier. After passing this information onto Ed, he and his crew were over to the house the next day to start work. Everyone worked hard and professionally. No complaints. The chimney came down easily and the roof patched up. Looks 1000% better. When they were done, outside of a couple of pieces of old shingle, you were never know they were there. The crew did a great job cleaning up. We are very happy on how the roof came out. Makes the house look much better. I would recommend Ed and EJ Contactors to anyone looking for a roofer. You won't be disappointed. He says what he's going to do and doesn't miss a beat. Finally, Ed offered me a warranty on the workmanship that obsoletely made me feel comfortable. Thanks Ed, great job!

I asked him to provide a better quality Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles with Lifetime warranty against algae stains and streaks which are more expensive and without any resistance he said "no problem if that's what you want". Anyone in the northeast replacing a roof should look at these shingles because homes in this area are highly prone to algae streaks and stains. Just look around and you will see. Ed worked right along with his crew as he said he would, and they finished the 25 square roof in a day and a half. This guy is an Ace as far I'm concerned. His crew were polite and respectful as well. Ed is not a real talkative conversationalist as some would look for, but he is a extremely serious professional roofing contractor. If my experience is his consistent standard you'd be foolish not to engage his services or at least get an estimate from him. The worst that could happen is you'll know exactly what needs to be done. He also provided certificates of insurance before he started as I asked, and also left some repair shingles as I had asked. When I met him at my home for an estimate he had arrived early and was already on the roof. Two other contractors never showed up or bothered to call to tell me they couldn't make it. I would highly recommend Ed, you won't be disappointed.
Description of Work: I called Ed based solely on the Angie's list referral and never met him before. He did exactly what he said in his estimate. Tear off old roof and remove debris. Installed new flashing around chimney and install new boots for vent stacks. Install new ridge vent and provide and install 4 brand new Velux skylights to replace 30 year old bubble plastic skylights. What a difference!! Replace drip edge and install 6 foot ice barrier. And I asked him to provide a better quality Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles with Lifetime warrenty against algae stains and streaks which are more expensive and without any resistance he said "no problem if that's what you want". Do NOT look for consistent treatment w/ this company. Obviously they can be great sometimes & within hours provide NO service and a rather rude response.
Description of Work: I returned home late T night after 2 weeks out of town to MASSIVE ice dams. I was (AM) frantic to locate a contractor so turned to Angie's List. I read *glowing* reviews of this company from only 1 & 2 days prior. Immediately I contacted them but received a VERY terse response that "Ed" was out of town until Sunday (it's Thurs.) and so they're unable to help. What?!? Is this the *same* company which JUST serviced 2 homes in the prior 2 days - while "Ed" was gone?!? Absolutely disgusted with them.

I apologize that you were not happy, please allow me to shed some light on the situation. I WAS out of town with my family from 2-14/2-22. I was still answering the phone even while on a family vacation. I thought it was the right thing to do, (because of the storms) even though it distracts from family time. I was referring customers to my fathers company for services. He also owns a roofing company, so he was busy with calls also. I am apologetic that he was unable to service your home in a reasonable timeframe. I'm a very dedicated business owner that always puts the customer first. I am truly sorry.

We called to get a price for removal of a lot of ice on our roof. The owner was on vacation with his family, but still answered his phone and referred me to his father. They came out and gave me an estimate the same day and were able to remove all of the snow and ice the following day. Their price was very reasonable and less than many other contractors. They did a very good and thorough job and cleaned up the ice and snow that was brought down. I would highly recommend this family business!

The roof job went well overall. I selected them to do the job after getting 4 quotes. While EJs was the lowest bid at $5533 (without sheathing), they had the best record on Angie's list too. It was a busy time of rear for the roofers and we had ~2 straight weeks of rain just after I asked them to go ahead. Ed warned me that the start date would be weather dependent. This was somewhat unsettling because he couldn't nail down a start date; however, I'd much rather have that than someone promise a date and not deliver. After a couple weeks they gave me a day or two notice and quickly went to work. I was not expecting to have to replace most of the sheathing. Ed explained that I had weak, old 3/8" plywood on the whole upper roof and most of my lower roof. I agreed to the new sheathing which he had quoted ahead of time at $55/sheet installed for 1/2" plywood (not OSB). This seemed a little high to me. I came home at lunch from work to see how things were going. I found old cruddy 3/8" sheathing just as he described. I looked around to see all the new materials exactly as promised as well: 1/2" plywood, the ice & water shield on the first 3 ft, high quality felt, and the Landmark architectural shingles exactly as ordered. Ed was not there at the time I arrived. I saw "The Edge Vent" being installed on the back edge and quizzed the installer to see if he was putting it in right (I had read up on it ahead of time). He was spot on. Ed came by a few minutes later and made sure I was happy with everything. They also connected my bathroom vent hoses to a vent thru the roof which I didn't have before. They were improperly routed into the attic only. A new ridge vent topped off the job. The roof looked great. After completion, I walked around the house and was hard pressed to find a nail or debris. I did find a couple pieces but overall they left the job site very clean. I had a bit of sticker shock because of the additional sheathing expense but overall I was very happy to get a tearoff, almost all new sheathing, great looking architectural shingles, ridge vent, and vent on the back edge of the roof for ~$8400. I negotiated ahead of time to include shingle for the shed (for me to install). He left me the shingles and also included ridge shingles and starter shingles (I didn't think to ask for those). That was cool. When I did the shed roof however, I ran out. I was one bundle short. After a call to Ed, he arranged to have a bundle ready for me to pick up at his supplier which turned out to be right by my work. That was a nice touch. Finally, I'm writing this review in Feb 2014, after we have just had a few freeze/thaw cycles in the weather. The back edge of my roof that would normally be 3 ft + icicles is icicle-free! The Edge Vent is doing its job just fine. I'd recommend Ed and his team without hesitation.
Description of Work: Tearoff and reroof of a 1800 sq ft colonial with ashpalt architectural shingles. The roof had two levels. They replaced most of the sheathing and added "The Edge Vent" on the back edge of the upper roof where there was no soffit.

My first meeting with Ed for an appraisal went very well. He answered all of my questions, and I was happy you could tell that he knew what he was talking about. He was very personable and provided me with a written estimate before leaving my home. I liked the fact that Ed said he is the owner of the business and is therefore present for all work because he wants to have control over everything that is done since his name is on it. I hired him right then. He called me about 1 week later to tell me that he would begin work on my roof in 2 days. Ed and his team showed up exactly when they said they would the first morning. They worked as long as the daylight allowed them. My house and property were well protected, and there was no damage during the whole process. They finished the job after the second day and I am extremely pleased with how it all turned out. Ed's prices were very reasonable, and I liked that the first half of the payment was given at the start of the job, but the second half was not required until the job was done. I have since reccommended Ed's business to a friend who will be using his services, and would gladly hire him again should I need his services in the future.

We own a home that was built in 1995 and, when we bought it in 2010, the home inspector suggested we start a "roof fund" because the original roof, constructed with 3-tab, asphalt shingles, was showing significant signs of aging. We chose to hold off for a couple of years, but in the Spring of 2012, started gathering quotes. The first quote I received was from Van Derhoof Roofing in April of 2012, and it was for $10,200. The person to whom I spoke said that "he could probably just give me a quote by using Google Earth, but he'd come over anyway. He did, and wrote the number "$10,200" on the back of his business card. This scared me - I did not have $10,200 and was hoping we could get our roof done for around $7,000. As stated earlier, partially because of this sticker shock, we decided to hold off for another year and start getting quotes this Spring (2013). Because of their stellar rating on Angie's List, I contacted EJ's and the owner, Ed, answered the phone right away. I explained my situation and he said he could be at my house within an hour to give me a quote. Unlike my experience with the other company about a year ago, Ed was very thorough with his examination of my roof. He spent about 20 minutes walking my property, examining the roof from both street level and walked the entire roof. He then provided me a quote for $5,000 and I immediately was both excited and skeptical. How on Earth could his price be less than half of the other company's? I actually addressed this with Ed, and while he in no way bad-mouthed the other company, he did say that they are normally at or near the highest bidders for roofing jobs. To ensure this wasn't "too good to be true," I collected three more estimates, one was the same as Ed's, the other two were in the $8,000 range - again, I have no idea how there is so much variance here because we are talking the *exact* same materials. I did an apples to apples comparison. Last Monday, I told Ed I wanted to go with him but was concerned about the color choice. What did he do? He showed up at my house within two hours, got up on his ladder, and nailed in three separate shingle samples for us to look at for a few days to help us decide. This man goes above and beyond, is very personable, and never seems "bothered." Because we had a break in the weather this week, Ed and his crew showed up first thing Monday morning and just completed my roof about an hour ago. It looks amazing. It beautifies the house beyond words and we are so happy with every aspect of our experience with this company. Interestingly enough, I was in San Francisco on business from Sunday until early this morning, and throughout the day yesterday, Ed was sending me periodic text message updates with pictures. This is a professional, first-class organization that I would recommend without hesitation and, frankly, with enthusiasm. Do yourself a favor and consider EJ's for your roofing needs - you will irrefutably not be disappointed. I commend he and his crew for a job well done, on time, and with absolutely no variance from the original quote. I simply wish all tradesman/craftsman were like Ed.

We had a pretty bad wind storm on a Sunday morning and lost a couple rows of shingles from our roof. Checked Angie's list for contractors that were available on Sundays and holidays (Monday was MLK Day) and Ed was highly rated. He answered the phone personally when I called Sunday around noon and said he would try to get over by the end of the day. He called at 3:00 and said he was on his way. Checked out the damage and said he had to match and purchase new shingles (we didn't have any new ones) but his supplier was closed on Sunday so he said he would be back the next day to repair. Arrived at 10:00 AM and finished the job very quickly. He also checked to make sure that the rest of the roof was secure. Very friendly, efficient, and responsive. Definitely would recommend and use again.

Based on the Angie's List ratings I called Ed Purcell (owner) at about 1:00 pm and told him what I wanted done. I also said I wanted to have the snow cleared using plastic shovels only because the roof was only a couple of years old and I thought that was the right way to do it. In addition, I didn't want any snow thrown off the roof on to shrubs along the front and back of the house. He said he only used plastic shovels to shovel roofs and would put the snow where there were no shrubs and gave me a price over the phone and said he could be here in about an hour. Ed and a helper arrived on time and proceeded to shovel exactly as we discussed. They were professional, worked quickly and did a great job. I would hire them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: We had 18"-24" of heavy snow on our entire roof from a recent storm and ice was forming along all the gutters. Based on my previous experience with our house when there was considerable amounts of snow on the roof, had EJ's shovel the snow off 4 feet of the entire perimeter edge as well as to clear all the snow off the ridge vents so any heat could escape through them rather than melt the snow and form ice and ice cycles.

The job went great, Ed and his crew were great to work with and they did a very professional job. I've done a lot of roofing in my past, so I know what to look for, and he did it by the book. We were very happy with the results. Ed did a few extras for the same price, which we didn't expect. He definitely went out of his way to please us..
Description of Work: We contacted Ed to estimate our total main roof, about 18 square. The job included stripping off 2 layers of shingles, putting in 5 mushroom vents, a bathroom vent and ridge vent on a new dormer. He came back with the lowest bid, but we've seen some of his recent work and it looked good so we hired him.

Eddie was fairly easy to work with. He corresponded by e-mail, which was preferrable to me. At times it took several days to get a response from him. The roof looks good, however we lost some shingles in the winter, then in the spring we lost a couple more. He came back in the winter to replace the shingle, but I did not want to keep calling him, so the other shingles were not replaced. Also, he put a bunch of huge tire marks in the yard that he said he was going to come back and fix in the spring. He never fixed them. Overall a nice roof and an above average experience. Time will tell how nice the roof is.
Description of Work: EJ's stripped my roof down to the studs and replaced the cedar shake with plywood and installed new shingles.
