Floyd has been doing this a long time and it shows in his confidence and his "I got this. Leave it to me." attitude. This was our first (and hopefully only) driveway replacement so we were both comforted and concerned by that attitude at times. Floyd's estimate was not the lowest estimate we got and I was going to go with another (lower but not the lowest) bid but Floyd asked for the time to come over to the house and explain why he thought his bid was fair and appropriate. He explained the work he expected to do and we talked a bit about what we expected. His manner and attitude and the fact that he was very local to us (lives about half a mile away and his office is about 4 miles North of us) helped convince us he really knew what he was doing. He had done driveways (one new and one re-pave) for two of our neighbors and that work looked great and was holding up very well (3 years and 5 years, respectively). We signed a one-page bid/contract and shook hands...no deposit required. We had told Floyd we were not in an enormous hurry to get the work done so he scheduled it around his other jobs. The work was completed on July 20th, 2015. I worked from home that day and, other than one concern I had regarding the slope at the top of the driveway (to ensure rain/melting snow didn't run into the garage) I didn't have to say a thing. Floyd's crew were clearly experienced, polite and friendly. Floyd himself supervised and lent a hand driving the backhoe on some of the trickiest spots around our electric service (right under the new turnaround, of course) and near a stand of ash trees next to the existing drive. Floyd was clearly busy this summer and was not the easiest guy to get in touch with. His office manager was very good at getting messages to him and he would get back to us in a few days. All in all, we are very happy with the work. The "B" for responsiveness is only because Floyd doesn't text or use email (my most common method of communication). The "B" for price was only because I spent more than I had hoped...I have a feeling in 20 years I will be willing to judge that money very well spent. One thing Floyd is not: he is no "fast-talking salesman." He will tell you what he knows and what he thinks: even if it is not what you want to hear. I like honest people and I believe Floyd is one of those increasingly rare finds. BTW> we discovered the hard way that a chipmunk had a burrow directly under the newly-widened portion of the driveway. The "hard way" is finding out that a determined chipmunk can claw/gnaw through asphalt! Floyd came over an patch the hole the chipmunk had made: no charge (after I caught and re-located the chipmunk).

Job seemed to go OK, but less than 18 months later, the pavement was cracking and falling apart in large chunks. Called 3 times to ask him to come look at it, but could not get even a return phone call. We finally called another contractor who told us the asphalt was laid over dirt, and not gravel, which did not provide adequate support and drainage. Also, the asphalt was less than 1" thick, not enough to support the weight of a car. Our contract clearly stated 2" of asphalt, but when you can't get the guy to even call back, not much you can do. I would never use him again. Would not recommend to anyone.
