Description of Work: I had two railings installed on my front porch and a matching decorative railing installed over my front porch roof, as well as four pillars on my back covered porch with caps on top and bottom. | |I had severe storm damage from ice filled gutters crashing down on the railings. After I couldn't get the original company that installed the almost new railings to return my many calls, I found Modern Decks & Railings. I got an immediate return call and a great free estimate within a couple of days! | |Jim, the President of the company, came out and was extremely friendly, professional, polite and knowledgeable. He was patient as I explained to him what I had, what the storm damaged, and what I was interested in. It was a bit complicated given that things were bent, broken, missing or shattered. | |Jim really listened and we had a really nice discussion of options and what would work best given the set up. I was very impressed when he pulled out an array of mini railings. It was not just a catalog with pictures, but the actual thing how it would look when complete. There were many options on materials, sizes, colors and styles, not just the plain white squared off vinyl ones that are so common. | |My damaged front porch railings were vinyl but the decorative railing above my porch was wrought iron. One was white and one was black. Jim showed me both vinyl and wrought iron options. He told me he could make the porch railings and a custom decorative railing to match. I have an old 1920s colonial and he showed me colonial style spindles as well an options the post caps. | |I trusted Jim's judgment and we came to a choice together. I went with matching vinyl porch railings and decorative railing above the porch. The railings had some shape and texture to them resembling wood, not just the square smooth ones that the competitor who wouldn't return my calls offered. | |I signed the contract and Jim did not require a deposit. He said that he did ask for money until the work was done and I was satisfied. He came within a couple of days and completed the matching front porch railings and the custom decorative railing over the front porch. I was so impressed! The work was done professionally and Jim took away all of the damaged railings for me. The work site was thoroughly cleaned up before he left. | |When Jim had completed the railings, I showed him four pillars that hold up a large covered back porch and where they looked like the wood was rotting. He examined them with me and it was obvious they were reaching the dangerous point. He explained all of the options available in a wide price range. Because my homeowners insurance was not covering the cost of the pillars as it did with the front porch railings and custom made decorative railing over my front porch (they covered 100% of those costs after Jim wrote up in detail what he was going to do and why the options chosen; my homeowners insurance approved it immediately without question and I really appreciated Jim going the extra mile to write something up that he knew homeowners insurance companies required), I needed to go with a reasonable option for the pillars that I would be paying out of pocket. Jim came up with something great and the price worked for me. Again, Jim did not want any money up front saying that he would not ask for payment until after the work was completed and I was happy with it. | |Jim returned within the next day or two and replace the four old rotten pillars. They had beautiful matching base and top caps. He took away all of the old posts and thoroughly cleaned up the job site. Again, he was friendly, polite, professional and knowledgeable throughout the whole process. | |Both jobs were done perfectly the first time and I was shocked how many neighbors came right over to compliment me on the work, especially the custom decorative railing over my front porch that matched the new front porch railings. Jim did a great job on the custom work and I was so glad he offered that option! | |I have since had a variety of friends and family over and they too were very complimentary on all of the work. Many who had attended BBQs in my back yard were also especially impressed with the new pillars. The bottom and top caps really made them stylish and decorative. Not just a square white vinyl pillar. | |I could not be happier and will definitely call Jim the next time I need any work done! I will also refer anyone to Jim that needs railings or pillars. | |Thanks Jim!! | | |
