7/26/12: This is my update on my experience with this contractor. I had given them a good review right after they did the job, but I am now revising that review to poor. I called this contractor about two months ago to report that the gutter cover they placed over my gutters we coming off in several areas. This points to poor quality of the product. We had a very mild winter, so this should never happen. I had to leave a message and did not receive a call back until two weeks later. The contractor promised to get to the job within a week and I have not heard from or seen them since. THIS REVIEW BELOW WAS PRIOR TO MY RECENT EXPERIENCE: Last year we had a few roof leaks in one of our rooms and our gutters constantly gut leaves and other debris in them since our house is surrounded by many trees. We felt there was a problem with either the roof or the gutters. I called and left a message for the contractor on 9/30/11. I received a call back on 10/1/11, and he promised to stop by that day to look at roof and gutters and give us an estimate. He came as promised and gave us an estimate that we felt was reasonable so we hired him. He told us he would not be able to get to our job for two to three weeks. We felt we could live with that since it was still a few months before winter. I called on 10/17/11 to follow-up on the time frame and left a message. I called back on 10/20/11 and also sent an email since I didn't received a call back from my 10/17/11 voice mail. He called back on 10/20/11 and said he was backed up on other jobs, but promised to get to ours within the week. I called on 10/28/11 to follow-up since it was over a week, and he said someone will be to our house to do the job on 10/29/11. Someone came on 10/29/11 and did the job. I cannot tell if the job was done well because only time will tell. If we do not have any more roof leaks and no more gutter debris within the next year, then I will assume that it was done well. He didn't provide an invoice after the job was complete and requesting by voice mail on 11/3/11 that we place check for payment at our house door the next day. Since I do not believe that is an appropriate place to put a payment, I mailed a check on 11/4/11 for the amount on his estimate to the address on his estimate paperwork.

Chimney technician arrived at designated time. He was pleasant and professional and gave us a good assessment of the condition of our chimney system. He offered suggestions to improve the safety of our chimney/fireplace. He cleaned the chimney and left the area spotless.

The work was completed in a timely fashion.
Description of Work: David Ferrarone and his helper Steve were very professional and courteous. They did an excellent job repairing the outside of the chimney and cleaned the flue.. Cost was the same as the estimate. Wok included removing a old TV Antenna, scraping off all loose motor, hand wire brushing the exterior, removing all dust , filling all cracks and voids, painting all the exterior with white "Dry-Lok" and sealing the chimney at the roof line with a roofing compound. They cleaned up the work area. We would definitely hired David for any future chimney work.

We had contacted Mr Ferrarone to repair the chimney, some foundation cracks outside and inside the basement. He offered to come over the very next day early in the morning for an estimate after picking up a worker in the morning. I stayed home for about 45 minutes before I had to leave but he didn't show. However when I came home alter, he had already completed an estimate along with a 3 year warranty for the repairs which I had requested. We agreed to the work that very night. He said it would take 2 weeks before he could do the work. He was very professional and accommodating. Actually in less than a week he called and said he could complete the job the next day. We jumped on the opportunity. He and his worker did an excellent job, were very polite and they did an excellent job repairing, painting the chimney and fixing small cracks in the foundation. I would have him do more work for us and in fact spoke to him about some additional work in the future. ================================================================================================================== Update: In early 2014, less than 2 and a half years after the chimney service was performed, the resurfacing completed started falling off. Pieces of stucco were all over the roof and ground. After this winter huge cracks appeared and it looks like the entire surface is going to separate from the chimney. We haven't called him back to even address the issues with his work because in 2012 my sister called him for an appointment/estimate on work for her house in Syracuse. An appointment was made but despite repeat calls to him, he never called back with the estimate nor gave any basic courtesy with further communication.
Description of Work: Repaired and painted chimney. Repaired settling foundation cracks outside the house and inside the basement.

Mr. Ferrarone's bid on our roof repair, backed up by a 3 year guarantee of his work, was considerably less than it would have cost to re-roof that section of our roof. Time will tell if his repairs do the trick, but we are hopeful that they will work, and appreciate his confidence to stand behind his work for 3 years. If the repairs hold up that long, by then perhaps by then we will be ready to re-roof. We appreciated his efforts and suggestions regarding repairing our front door step; for this, as with his other work, he stands behind the workmanship for 3 years. In replacing the rotting window sills on our dormers (something we weren't aware of when we initially contacted him about the roof), he was efficient & effective, using pressure treated wood to help resist rot in the future. If we could have gotten the work done a little sooner, that would have been even better; but I understand that contractors are a busy lot, especially towards the end of the outside home repair season. All in all, a positive, professional experience. (P.S. Two years out, all the work that Mr. Ferrarone did is holding up well.)
Description of Work: I contacted Mr. Ferrarone initially & primarily due to a roof leak. He explained that he is not a roofer, but does a variety of home repairs, including on roof leaks. He was confident that he could repair our leak without re-roofing that part of our roof. While he was evaluating that problem, I asked him if he was interested in giving us an estimate on other things as well. In the end, in addition to repairing our roof, Mr. Ferrarone also reset the fieldstones and deteriorating concrete on our front door step, replaced rotting window sills on two dormer windows, and a couple of other smaller items.

The job went well from start to finish. He did not do the front steps until we went away on vacation, so that it wouldn't impact our entering the house...very courteous.
Description of Work: David was punctual and professional. He repointed a lot of bricks on my 1938 brick colonial. He fixed my front steps. He repaired the flashing on my chimney. He told me what I needed to do in the future to tighten up the exterior of my house. I would use him again and recommend him to my friends.

Description of Work: I called for an estimate on a project we needed to have done. We needed our steps leveled and a sidewalk repaired, possible re poured. David made two appointments with me. He did not show for either. I would not even consider hiring someone who can not show up for an appointment. End of story.

Dave gave us an estimate in a very timely manner. I called him and he came the next day to analysis the problem give us an estimate. His work load had him tied up for a week or so, but he gave us an date when he could start and he was here to do the work. It took him 2 days to do the work by himself. This is a owner business as far as I can see.
Description of Work: Replaced rolled roofing on part of the house roof and made repairs on the chimney. This roof has given problems off and on for many years. Has blown off twice and is continually prone to leaking. For now It appears to have been repaired successfully, however until it has survived for a few years I will not know how well it has been repaired. Dave the owner of the business gave me a 5 year warranty, which other contractors have not. He also pointed up the chimney and painted it. It looks real nice. He cleaned up after his work and took away the old roofing material. I found not pieces of old roofing left on the ground when he was done. Previous contractors didn't do this.

In early-June, Mr. Ferrarone visited my home to review the proposed work. We discussed replacing two deteriorating brick steps, previously repaired by another contractor, and repairing other portions of the staircase. Mr. Ferrarone described in general how he would approach the work noting that finding matching brick, given the age of the original brick, would be difficult He indicated that a written proposal would be delivered to the house the following week. In mid-June, he called to say that he needed a few additional days to receive feedback from a brick supplier. I understood and agreed. On July 12th, having not received a proposal or any other contacts, I called Mr. Ferrarone's office phone and left a message asking if he was still interested in submitting a proposal. I never received an answer.
Description of Work: Requested a proposal to repair the brick steps at the front door and to do some minor pointing on my house's brick foundation.

Response from DH Ferrarone Company LLC
Your project was No quoted the last week of June. No bricks in the Syracuse area come close to matching your current brick color, size and texture. We talked about ordering brick from out of town. the minimum order is $1500 and comes with no assurance on matching current brick. This small project comes with to much risk. The materials can not be varified or returned. I try hard to provide quality outcomes on the projects I get involved with. There is no control over the raw materials on this project. If you are able to find matching brick, I'll install them for $1,600.00. Sorry for the misunderstanding. David H. Ferrarone

Overall Mr. Ferrarone was very professional he called within 24 hours of my sending him an email. He stopped by within two days to review the work and provide an estimate. He estimated when he would be available and called me within that time-frame to schedule the start of the project. He was punctual and communicative about his progress. The job took a bit longer than originally estimated, but it didn't affect the final cost of the job.
Description of Work: Mr. Ferrarone rebuilt a portion of a basement wall that had collapsed. He removed the debris from the basement and filled the opening with cement block and mortar. Once the wall was re-built, he backfilled the soil against the foundation and repaired the blacktop that had broken in my neighbor's driveway. He also checked the foundation for other possible issues.

I contacted David about a portion of my roof where the shingles meet the house, where I thought some water was getting into the house. In the course of talking about that project, we identified several other minor jobs around the house that he could help with. I ended up deciding not to have the roof work done, but David did a fine job with the rest, and even showed me that the roof work would have been a bad idea anyway.
Description of Work: Several small house jobs: installing a water diverter so that the gutter no longer splashes onto the house, repairing a broken gutter strap, and repairing a clapboard that was coming away from the house.

Asked them to give me an estimate for a concrete top coat over crushed, compacted stone under my new shed. The owner was out the next day to estimate the work on my schedule. Surprisingly he told me that concrete would not work because over time the rocks would shift and the concrete would crack, it might take 5 years but I would hate the job. They suggested a pressure treated frame be constructed around the compacted stone to keep the stone from shifting and therefor keeping the shed level. The detail to work and the extra time they took to shore up the parts of the pad that were not level was a surpise. I watched as they labored to make sure it was level. They were able to add work to the project that I wanted after they had already started, the price difference was reasonable and done quickly with no argument. They arrived when they said they would, they told me it would take a day and a half and it did. The owner and his assistant are personal, agreeable and very easy to work with. When they left, I had no clean up to do. I would absolutely recommend them again. They are masons but I believe they can handle most projects in and around the house.

This work was outstanding. The end product was beautiful and the area was completely cleaned and materials removed. Work was done promptly, thoroughly, and quickly. All details of the job and the results were clearly explained. David is a consummate professional who is very knowledgeable and skilled, takes pride in his work and wants the customer to be completely satisfied. I couldn't be any happier with this work.
Description of Work: Chimney was ground and re-pointed above roof line and flashing sealed. Foundation was scraped, cracked cement removed, resurfaced with bonding cement and painted with dry lock paint, above and below grade and cracks were repaired, window wells cleaned, window ledges repaired. Masonry repairs were made to the front steps, grinding and re-pointing around flagstones and rotted wood was replaced at base of front door. Below grade hole in front stonework was filled in and sealed. Basement walls were scraped, cracks and voids repaired, and sealed with waterproofing paint and floor was cleaned.

David determined that the problem was due to the large amount of snow on the roof that overflowed into the ventilation pipe that exited the roof. The problem was acerbated by the pipe's flat cap and not having a screen. To take care of the immediate problem, he shoveled the roof and made repairs to the area surrounding the pipe that stuck up thru the roof. To address future problems with leaking, he provided 3 options. I choose the 3rd option which was to extend the length of the pipe which came with a screen and a dome cap. I spoke to him on Monday and he came by two days later to make the repair. He guarantees his work for 2 years. I found his pricing to be very reasonable and would not hestitate to call him for any future roof work.

Although, he and I have arrived at a consensus regarding the price, he is yet to do the job because of the weather. The quote was for $450. I decided to go with the quote he gave me because it was a reasonable amount for the work that needed to be done. He was well recommended. When I talked to him, he sounded like he knew very well what he was doing; he sounded well experienced. Sometimes, it was difficult to get an instant answer from him because I was trying to call him and vice versa. However, he was very quick to actually come out and look at what needed to be done. He came up with a good synopsis of the work and what the cost would be for the same. He was very good. I will consider him for another quote if the actual work is successful.
