My compliments to Nick and his team for restoring the lower third of my vintage shower stall from the 1930's. Care had to be taken to save some of the old bathroon tiles (no longer available) and integrate them into the new design using the latest up-to date porcelains and ceramics. A bull nose row (chair rail) now divides the old from the new. The result is gorgeous. Nick?s expertise was especially valuable when I undercounted the need for tiles (I insisted on choosing my new tiles), and when there was no time to order an additional set. He quickly, on the spot, figured out how to re-arrange the existing tiles and complete the job aesthetically. I recommend Nick to anyone re-doing bath or kitchen. You won?t be disappointed.

The whole process went very smoothly from start to finish - Nick came to our place, assessed the job, and promptly gave us a quote. We scheduled the work with zero delay or hassle (we did have to wait a few weeks until he could get us into the project schedule, but that's to be expected), and he and his associates Jerry and Rick were on-time, totally professional, and just generally good guys. The fee and timetable for the job were totally reasonable, and Nick was easily reachable when we were ironing out details via email. They guys worked fast, and I was surprised at how little mess was made, aside from some dust and very minor debris. The new tile looks fantastic - definitely a huge improvement, both structurally and aesthetically! We've got a bathroom project we'd like to get underway in the next year or so, and will definitely be giving Nick a call when the time comes - it was a pleasure doing business with him.
Description of Work: We hired Nick to replace the tile in our kitchen. The original tiles (installed by the previous owners) had just been glued to the plywood subfloor without proper stabilization, so they were shifting and cracking, and looked terrible. Nick and his guys moved the big appliances and tore out the crappy tile on Day 1, installed proper stabilizing board/ mesh and laid the new tile on Day 2, and grouted the tile and moved the stove, fridge, etc. back into place on Day 3.

Nick did a really great job with the tile work. We are very satisfied with the result and I would highly recommend him. Even though we found it to be a bit more expensive than we hoped, we went with Nick because he was professional and really knew what he was talking about. When he came to give an estimate he gave us all the right suggestions, from what products to use on the marble, to the color white grout we should go for. He really knows what he's doing and works with very professional guys! They came in on time, covered all surfaces, worked diligently and carefully and accomplished the job well and on time. I highly recommend him.

The whole process went very well. From the beginning Nick was prompt in returning our calls and came to work on time, if not early, each day. With his team, Nick did each part of the job with professionalism and concern that we were happy with the end product. Notably, as they broke into the shower floor, they realized it would take more work than they originally thought, but Nick stuck with the original quote. Overall, we were very happy!!

Nick and Jeremiah did a great job for a new homeowner on a budget. Nick worked with my schedule and let me do the demo work myself to save a few bucks; he was also able to recommend a plumber and get the job done in the time window I had available (it's the only bathroom in the house so he did it while I was away). All in all very straightforward and quality work by people who know what they're doing.

Honed and polished ivory travertine stone was used to exactingly replace the original tiles, which had to be demolished in order to fix the leak. Precision tile cutting was absolutely required to set the new tile within the shower stall's unusual perimeter - a tight radius quarter circle. I searched for a contractor using Angie's List and was impressed by Nick's biography. Finding a third generation tradesman meant a lot to me so I sent Nick an email and he responded quite promptly to my message. Meeting Nick in person pretty much made up my mind. Nick explained exactly what was needed and followed through with a proposal that provided one facet of the repair that others could not match - the plumber. Nick had his own, and the cost was included in the estimate. New tile was sourced from Artistic Tile in NYC and the shower curb saddle was provided by a a separate marble shop referred to me by Nick's helper Jeremiah. Nick set up his best tile cutting saw in the backyard of the building, and started cutting the one by two foot travertine tiles, while the plumber and his helpers set to demolishing the shower stall floor. When the lead liner was revealed, a waterproofing material appeared to have been applied in the vicinity of the leak. The plumber said the coating, which may have be used to seal a hairline crack, probably degraded the lead over time with the aid of moisture, until it turned brittle and failed nearly twenty years since it was installed. A vinyl liner was employed this time. Over several days, as Nick operated his precision saw, Jeremiah installed the new cement board, laid the "mud" floor, then the tiles, one by one, as helper Rick shuttled up and down three flights of spiral stairs between the backyard and the third floor bringing materials and support. Nick, who is not a youngster, made the trek himself, more than just a few times, to insure that the work is done right. Most definitely, Nick and his team went the extra mile for this difficult high end job. Each and every day, Nick was present to oversee the work in progress. Nick is an artisan who embodies many skills including patience, exactitude and above all - pride in his work and the certain ability that he can make a positive difference.

After first making an attempt on our own to regrout and calk the tub/shower areas in two bathrooms in our home, we decided it would be better to call upon a professional, which turned out to be a very good decision. “Nick the Tile Man” is highly experienced and clearly takes great pride in the quality of his work. He’s thoughtful, considerate, conscientious, and respectful of customer interests, all qualities that are delivered with a pleasant manner and good humor, accompanied by a hard-working, competent crew who reflect Nick’s values and work well together. Plus, they clean up nicely. We chose to pay a bit more for his services than for lower bids, and are very pleased with the results, bearing out the wisdom of this decision to go with experience and quality.

Removed tiles, did mud job, was flexible in meeting my demands, tiled as per my design. Initial design did not look right ( although impeccably, done) so had it changed. Only thing was the mini wall that was supposed to jut out so that the toilet was flush with the wall - did not quite work out right. It was supposed to be flush but after re-installing the toilet, there is still a .5 inch gap - so not exactly flush. He cleaned up well - the job was good - , he bagged everything. I just have to put it out the day they come to collect. I plan on using him, again for a bigger job. I do recommend that you are around when tiles start to get laid - as what you may initially thing as being alright - might not look quite the same as you imagined when it is on the wall or floor. Be aware - he only works M-F - banker's hours so if you need to get out of work, you will have to take time off.

Response from Nick the Tile Man
The client received a written contract outlining the job to be performed. From the beginning the client changed her mind regarding the layout of the design and the type of tiles to be used. Every day she had a new request. She is not user friendly. I performed everything that was written on the contract and modify her demands wherever I could without increasing her cost. Now she rates me as "B". If I were the one with problems, why does she want to hire me back to tile her entire basement?

Nick was very responsive to my needs. I was looking for a contractor to repair my tilework to stop water from leaking into my basement, and I didn't have the budget to completely renovate the bathroom. Nick arrived on time and showed me how the water is getting in and why the job required replacing more tiles than I had originally thought. A large number of tiles were loose and didn't have any cement left holding them in- it would be impossible to re-grout them without first cementing them all into place. But to my surprise, he offered to do the work of replacing a large portion of the tiles around my bathtub for a price that another guy had offered for just re-grouting. Nick and his partner Jeremiah arrived on time the first day. He said it would be a day and a half of work and sure enough they were done on time. During the project they found that the job entailed extra work because the cement behind the tiles was also weak. They didn't charge me extra for the work to fix those issues. There were a couple of other small things that arose during the job that he and I agreed were unrelated to the work he agreed to do. In each case, Nick did not take advantage of the situation but we agreed on a small fee for these items that we agreed was fair and reasonable. Nick also arranged for a plumber to do the plumbing part of the job (not included in this review), at what I think was a reasonable cost. For a small job like this, it was helpful to have Nick make the arrangements with the plumbers. The end result is what I wanted - the job didn't break the bank and I can use the shower again. I expect that the work he did will last for many years to come, until such time when I can afford a complete bathroom renovation.
Description of Work: Repaired bathtub tile surround (3 sides). Replaced about one third of the tiles around the bathtub. Also opened up and rebuilt the wall for plumbers to replace shower valve body. Nick also made arrangements for his plumber friend to do the plumbing part of the job.

Nick the tile man arrived on time, was friendly, professional and, gave a fair estimate for the work. He also recommended a couple of nice ideas on what should be done which I went along with. Nick started and finished the job when he said he would, arriving on time in the mornings for the duration of the job. The plumbing was done exactly as outlined and there have been no problems thus far. I was very pleased with the end result and would certainly use his services again.
Description of Work: Nick the tile man removed the old tiles around my bathtub and installed new tiles and grout including on the ceiling. He also replaced the old two handle faucet / shower body with a single handle faucet / shower body. Lastly, he replaced the old bathroom tiolet.

I had my kitchen done last November 2013. in Feb of 2014 my tiles on the floor started to come loose. I realized then that my contractor had obviously not set them correctly. after several failed attempts to reach my contractor I decided to look for someone experienced in tile work to repair this problem I found Nick on Angies list, his reviews where very good. I decided to have him come out for an estimate. Nick was on time for his scheduled estimate. after a few minutes of assessing my floor he knew then that the tiles were put down without enough thin set/glue. he also predicted that the backs of the tiles would be clean of any glue and that I wouldn't need to buy any new tiles. Nick explained what would need to be done, how it would be done and time frame. he said he would have an estimate for me via email within 24hours. I received an estimate the very next day. I am one that gets at least 3 estimates for any job I have done, however I was pressed for time due to work schedule. i felt Nicks presentation, and assessment was thorough and his estimate seemed fair, so I decided to give him the job. Nick was able to accommodate the 2 days I was off of work the following week and begin the job then. The job took a little longer (4 days in total vs 2days) than he had predicted but again he made that issue a minor inconvenience by working with me and my work schedule. Nick and his employee showed up on time every day. they covered the kitchen with plastic to protect from dust. they cleaned up at the end of every work day. any tools he needed to leave for the next day were packed up neatly and put aside as to not be in the way. once all the loose tiles were removed, Nick took the time to explain and show me what my contractor had failed to do and how he will make the proper corrections. all the tiles were re-set, grouted and the floor cleaned. all the plastic was taken down and my kitchen was wiped cleaned of any remaining dust. The floor now is SOLID, and feels great to be able to walk on the tiles without tiptoeing around for fear of cracking loose tiles. i am very satisfied with the work that was done and would recommend Nick to anyone needing tile work.

Nick met with us and helped us assess the situation. We determined that this was a bigger job (layers of moldy drywall etc.) that we needed to get taken care of before having him do the tile work. Nick was very punctual, professional, and most of all, informative and helpful in helping us to assess the situation.

Nick was very professional. He turned up on agreed time to give a quote on the work needed. I asked him if he thought it was necessary to remove all tiles including ones running up the wall. He gave a thorough inspection and said we didn't need to replace the wall tiles as they were still in good condition. This was an instant plus for me as I get very wary and tired of contractors "adding" work that wasn't needed. Gave the quote and said he could start Tuesday the following week - job would take 3-4 days. Nick and Jeremiah arrived Tuesday morning at 9am and began working straight away. They were quick, efficient, courteous and professional. Old tiles were removed and new ones laid at the end of the first day. Wednesday they arrived once again on time and Nick went out of his way twice to source correct grout and a ceramic saddle at 2 different home depot's after the ones I purchased were not correct. Everything was completed by noon Wednesday. Job looks amazing - Im so happy I went with Nick. If you want to hire someone who knows what he's doing, can be trusted to get in and get it done right the first time, then you must call him to look at the work you need completed!

I had to fix the plumbing in my tub, so I wanted to take the opportunity to redo the walls, which were made of plaster, and replace the 1950s tile. Nick took a look and gave me a quote. He was on time and very professional. I got the sense that he cares a lot about perfection and doing things the right way, which was comforting. The price was fairly reasonable as well. I ended up choosing someone else to do the job since they could start sooner and I was anxious to begin, but I would have gladly used Nick's services.

The new tile came out well. It was a pretty straight foward install that extended tiling that was already in place. The cleaning was fine. The grout is not exactly "like new" even though its only 3 months old but improved from the pre-cleaning condition. The biggest learning is that its much cheaper and much better to seal the grout, and if its tiled with natural stone the tile as well, from the very start. The sealant appearance is good (i.e. its not visually noticeable) and appears to have been applied throughout the shower. The Dupont StoneTech Professional BulletProof sealer is a great sealer and so hopefully it will last 2-3 years. Both gentlemen are friendly and got the work done with no mess left behind. I suggest having a call with Nick a few days before the work begins with Nick to review again exactly what you want to make sure he brings the correct materials and tools with him and there are no on-site surprises. It all worked out, but there were some last minute materials needed.

Nick and his employee, Jeremiah did an ok job tiling one side of the basement. The $2,400 was for this job. On the other hand, Jeremiah, took a side job to paint my basement, grout the bathroom, and install molding. He took the job knowing he had a certain amount of time free from his jobs with Nick. We negotiated a price and he agreed. He finished painting one side of the basement. The other side he started a couple of walls first coat and I told him the color didn't look good for a kitchen. I offered him more money to continue the job with the new color. He agreed. He did one coat of paint and told me he'd be back on Sunday morning to continue. He never showed up and left me with a big mess. I tried to call him and he didn't respond. By the way, I paid him for three quarters of the job. I called Nick a couple of days later and he said Jeremiah was sick. Jeremiah has a phone and could have called me. He said he would have Jeremiah call me. He called and said he would come over on Wednesday, June 12. My intuition told me he wouldn't show so I called him. He said he couldn't make it - just as I suspected - and not even a call. Nick is reliable but do not deal with his employee Jeremiah. He comes off as a nice guy but he cannot be trusted. Beware!

I told (member name removed) that I am not responsible for what Jeremiah does if she hires him. I work as a tile repairman, that is all my insurance covers. If you hire my employees to work for you, I am not responsible. I installed porcelain floor tiles in her basement. I covered everything with plastic and clean up before I left. (member name removed) said she loved the work we performed. I told her any problem with the work I did to call me. If she wanted the bathroom re-grouted, she should call me; not my helper. My employee are covered by insurance ONLY on my jobs, not what they do on the side. I'm sorry that (member name removed) had a hard time, she should call me to re-grout her bathroom and not try to sneak around to my employees for them to do it. That is what happens when you ask for more than agreed upon.
