This provider did a beautiful job on everything. The doors are beautiful. I love the way the sheetrock and wood was carefully sanded and smoothed for the walls, doors, and ceiling. This was a careful and conscientious execution of what is usually a mundane construction task. I'd say this carpenter converted his construction skills into a craft, and so was able to transform the everyday into something a bit more pleasing. My only complaint was that some trash from the work was left behind. Although I was disappointed about this fact I would still consider hiring him again, especially if the need was for a fine finish carpenter.
Description of Work: Boxed off pipes on basement ceiling, built and installed custom sized doors, built closets.

I was very pleased with the quality of the work. Michael was clear in his communication throughout the process. He completed the project on time and slightly under his estimate. I would definitely use him again. I would encourage everyone to see samples of his work.
Description of Work: Michael beautifully restored/repaired some classic collectible furniture. This required matching the wood and fitting it into an existing piece. It also required replacing very visible hinges on a folding table. Michael started with existing holes & fitted in hinges that both look beautiful & are entirely functional. Less visible but still entirely critical, Michael created new pieces that attach the table top to the base. I was entirely delighted with the results.

We are really pleased with how everything turned out. The hardwood floors are beautiful (we've had issues related to the flooring itself, thanks to the poor quality of the Lumber Liquidators wood floors that we bought, but that's unrelated to the installation). The kitchen is amazing -- we asked Michael to install an IKEA kitchen. He had never worked with IKEA before, but he quickly picked up on the nuances and quirks that come with IKEA products, and did a wonderful job with the installation. He made suggestions regarding design and lighting, all of which we followed, and they worked beautifully. The kitchen is the first thing you see when you come in the front door of our house, and everyone who sees it comments on how great it is. The deck is solid, sturdy, and well constructed. It was finished during the winter months, so we're just starting to enjoy it now, and we have absolutely no complaints. The stairs are at the right angle, Michael installed a hand-rail and a gate at the top, and the new doors between the kitchen and the deck are perfect for the location, and well installed. Michael is easy to work with. We were pretty sanguine about the time schedule since we weren't in a huge rush to finish things up, and it was easy for him to take other jobs and fit us in around those. Even with that, we never felt like we weren't making progress quickly, and a lot of the hold-ups were related to us making decisions and ordering supplies, rather than to any slow response on his side. I frequently relied on his design experience and asked him a lot of questions about whether things would work or not, and he always gave me an honest and thoughtful answer. We will use him again without hesitation (we're planning to remodel our master bathroom this summer). We highly recommend him for this kind of work.
Description of Work: Michael provided us with an extensive remodel of our kitchen and our deck, as well as laid down hardwood floors throughout the house. He installed lighting, cabinetry, appliances, and did a series of small handy-man tasks as requested.

Michael was terrific. He designed the new steps (which are very wide, have an intermediate landing and are approached from two different pathways). He sourced and ordered the sustainable hardwood we desired. He removed the existing steps which had a poured concrete base and required much effort. He then installed the new steps according to his design plans. We needed the new steps right away and Michael was willing to work outside in December and early January and constructed a tent that he worked under. He cleaned up everyday. He let us know the progress he was making and when he would be working. He was a pleasure to work with, the project came in at the budgeted figured, was done on time, and still looks great.
Description of Work: removed dilapidated stone front steps and replaced with custom wooden steps

This was a horrible experience. Michael was paid in full for his time and materials, yet we got absolutely nothing in return. Nothing he did was usable and he wasted our time and money. He is clearly not able to make cabinets even though he claimed that he was. I consider his claims to all be very dishonest and his workmanship is well below par. His level of craftsmanship may be on the level of making something for outdoors use (a bench, for example). We are very dismayed and definitely were taken advantage of by Michael. We requested a partial refund and Michael stopped corresponding with us.
Description of Work: Michael/Rent an Artisan gave us an estimate of 40 hours of labor at 40.00/hour + materials for a simple project that required him to build 3 kitchen cabinets (2 of which were in corners, so those should have been pretty easy) and to modify a fourth cabinet by making it shorter. He was also to install a stove hood/microwave combination. He also included adding trim molding to cabinets and to the kitchen itself as part of the job. Michael told us that this job was very simple, well within his skill set, and that he'd be in and out in a week without any trouble. After one day of work, we considered letting him go due to the crookedness of the cabinet he shortened. The next day, he fixed that and began working on the first cabinet he was going to build. After that day of work, there was a frame (no sides, shelves, or bottom) and the pieces of wood making up the cube were all crooked and of different lengths. The cabinet was also not the same depth as the other cabinets in the kitchen. The third day, he came in and I showed him the messy cabinet and he apologized -- and attempted to fix it. I also asked him to replace the soft wood he'd used with hard wood b/c he had used pine on the front face of the cabinet, for some reason. I am not sure why anyone would use a soft wood on the front of a cabinet that would take the most wear and tear. Our other cabinets were hardwood, so his choice of pine did not make any sense at all. The fourth day he built a cabinet for our sink and left screw heads on the surfaces of that cabinet, including the front face of the cabinet. The cabinet was to hold our new expensive farmhouse sink and we wanted a furniture-quality sink cabinet. He cut out a place to hold the sink, but that was asymmetrical and the cabinet was just a sad mess. Clearly, a person with any experience making a cabinet or furniture would never use screws that were visible/level with the front face of the cabinet. The hole he made for the microwave/hood was improperly placed and had to be patched and re-made by a more competent contractor. The venting material he bought was 200.00+ and the wrong size when normal hood venting kits exist and cost only 60.00. He clearly had no idea what he was doing and used our house to attempt to learn how to remodel a kitchen. At the end of a week, we had 3 cabinet skeletons that were shabby and unprofessional looking. This is after a week's work! There was NO SIGN of him being close to finishing the job and the level of workmanship was really an embarrassment. We decided to let him go. In order to have a functional kitchen, his work had to be removed and thrown away and a skilled contractor came in to re-do the whole job. His cabinet skeletons were inconsistent in size, crooked, and were not made in a way that would look nice. Because of his lack of skills, we wasted almost 2000.00 for his week's labor bill and nothing that he did was at all usable.
