The job did not go well one worker had to be told to leave the property as his attitude and foul language was more than I could take. Nails and debris were found all over my lawn when they were "done". Agian the roof now leaks and Mr. Mead comes up with one excuse after the other as to why. including the fact I didn't want to spend $1200 on 6 sheets of plywood for the roof, after which he stated well you don't really need it I just thought you would want to replace the wood. Now he states it's because I didn't replace the wood.
Description of Work: Kevin Mead was the most unprofessional contractor I ever hired. New Roof Complete tear off leaks with water running into structure Mead refuses to stand by his warranty. Workmanship was so bad, he had to be told to add flashing to the roof line. Stated he has been in business 20 years found out later from friends how bad he is. I also had to learn the hard way. Out $6000 dollars and still have a roof that leaks. It didn't leak prior to being replaced it was just a 25 year old roof needing replacement. Save your money don't call Kevin Mead's Home Improvement

Response from KEVIN MEAD HOME IMPROVEMENTS
My company, Kevin Mead Home Improvement, contracted a roofing job from this person’s son on March 15, 2010 for the amount of $5000, not $6000 as the customer stated. The original estimate was $5000 and I did not charge him any more than this price to complete his job. This was a more than fair price for the job to be done as it was early spring pricing. We started the job a day or 2 later, not more than 2 weeks later as the customer stated. I have the estimate signed by him on March 15, 2010. The job from the time the customer signed the estimate to the completion of the roof was one week. My company removed the shingles from the south side of the roof and noticed that the plywood was in fair-good condition so we completed that side. The following day we tore off the north side and garage and noticed that the plywood was soft in some areas and deteriorated much more than the south side. I immediately called the customer at his work to let him know about the situation and told him that I recommend that he replace the plywood on that half of the roof and garage so that the new roof would have a proper surface to nail to. I did not tell him that he really didn’t need it or else I wouldn’t have called him in the first place. I would have just continued with the job. To replace the plywood, I told him that there would be an additional charge of $1,200.00 for half the roof and his garage which was definitely much more than 6 sheets. The customer refused plywood as per my recommendation because he said that he couldn't afford it. I told him that he could pay the extra cost portion of the bill in the summer or fall to make it easier for him but he again refused and told me to go ahead with the roof without the plywood. I had no choice but to continue to dry the roof in before nightfall as it was open to the elements. We finished the job on March 22, 2010 cleaning up the job site as we do all of our jobs. The customer inspected the work and made final payment. As for one of my worker’s being asked to leave, I apologize again to this customer sincerely, as I did when it happened, for the actions of this person. I do not condone bad language to be used on my job sites at any time. The worker was not allowed back on this customer’s job site or any other job site for that matter. He was fired. About a week later, there was a heavy rain. I received a call from the customer notifying me that there was a slow leak in his garage. I went over immediately to inspect the area but couldn’t find where the water was coming in, so I lifted each shingle in that area and put silicone on the nail heads in case it was a problem with the nails not “catching“ on the poor roof surface. I hosed down the roof to check for leaks and it appeared to have stopped. A couple of days later, it rained again and the customer reported the same area in his garage was having a slow leak again. I went over the next day and tore up six courses of shingles where the leak was occurring and replaced them. I checked for any leaking and it again seemed to have stopped. However, the next day it was back again so I decided to completely redo the garage roof personally. I again asked the customer if he wanted to put plywood on that area and he refused again. I tore off all the shingles on the garage, put an ice and water guard membrane on the entire surface, flashing where both roofs connect (I did not need to be told to put flashing on as the customer stated) and new shingles. Instead of a nail gun I chose to hand nail everything so I could make sure the nails were catching. I asked the customer to call me if he noticed any more leaks and did not receive any more calls throughout the summer and fall. I even called him a during some heavy rain after I had redone it to check how it was holding up and there wasn’t any leaks. In January, I received a call from the customer notifying me of some ice on the interior north side open studded garage wall. I told him that it was probably ice backup due to poor insulation and venting and that he really should have put the new plywood on his roof. I also told him that he needed to get the snow off his roof as many people were having problems like this due to the bad winter we had causing ice dams. He became agitated and told me that he was going to take me to court. I did not believe it to be a good idea to go to his house at that time as I believed we would have a very unpleasant confrontation. I did, however, talk to his parents who live next door and was able to take a look at his house with them. When I was there I noticed areas on his roof where the snow was melting faster then the rest of the house which confirmed that he was losing heat through the roof and it was creating ice dams at the edge of his roof. The customer’s parents told me that he had been heating his un-insulated garage over the winter which also had added to the creation of the ice dams. The customer had also tore off all his siding and insulation from his house around the same time that I did his job which can be contributing to the heat loss (and probably the nails and debris that he said was left by us). Shingled roofs are designed to shed water, not hold water. Whenever water flow off the roof is obstructed, water will flow under the shingles and over the flashing (the joints where the roof meets vertical walls) to create leaks. The leak that this customer had in the garage was being caused by water trapped by ice, not improper installation of his roof. I stand behind my work with all of my customers including this customer and do everything I can to please them ,but this is not a workmanship problem. It was an insulation/venting problem that was creating the ice dams on the edge of roof to form this winter, causing the water to backup under the shingles and find its way to the nails that didn’t catch well enough due to not replacing the plywood as recommended. The customer refuses to believe that his problems could be caused by anything other than my company’s workmanship and I am really sorry that he feels this way. We went to court on March 9, 2011 for the amount of $3000. The judge dismissed the case after he saw the evidence that I and this customer presented to him. I had receipts that showed that I went back each and every time this customer called me and took care of any problems that he may have had. I did stand by my warranty as I do with all of my customers. I had pictures, as did he, that clearly showed the snow was melting in certain spots faster due to the lack of insulation/ventilation and that ice dams were formed where the leak was occurring. This customer and his father were very angry and a couple of days later this report was posted by the customer’s father on Angie’s List. I hope that anyone that reads this customer’s complaint also reads my side of the story. I have been in business for 20 years and have 27 years experience. I am honest with my customers and reliable. I am very professional. I give customers quality work with quality materials at competitive prices. I have thousands of happy, satisfied customers and can give references to anyone who would like them. I am fully insured with both liability and worker’s compensation. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you will give my company a try for any of your home improvement needs. Sincerely, Kevin Mead
