The overall experience was very positive.
Description of Work: Burden Builders came and I had a couple of different small projects that I had him looked at and he kind of determine it, one of it was painting and he didn't do that kind of painting. He also helped me took down a door and didn't charge me for that.
Was very happy with kitchen installation last fall and hired Burden again for our bathroom renovation and some additional work. Not only do they show up on the day you expect them, they are punctual and come at the exact time they say they will. Tom is great at cabinetry and turned two individual cabinets into an island at our request. He custom made the top and put a small breakfast bar on the side. During the process, he had me sit at the countertop to be sure the height and overhang of the seating was comfortable before he made it permanent. While upgrading the bathroom with new everything (except tub), he was always paying attention to the details. If he could improve the way something functioned, he did. That included fixing the toilet flange in the floor so the toilet didn't rock or leak any longer. Even a small thing like the placement of the locking screws in the towel bar was considered. When he saw that mildew had attacked the sheetrock over the showerhead, he insisted on cutting out that piece and replacing it with blueboard. He also doesn't go crazy and suggest that you replace an entire wall. He is considerate and recommends doing what needs to be done without stretching the project budget. In the past, I've had trouble even getting electricians to show up. Tom's crew is always happy to help. Our house is quite dark and they installed overhead lighting for us in a number of trouble spots. It meant putting wiring in a lot of places where it didn't exist, including the basement ceiling and the bedroom closet. They've been in our attic more times in the past few months than any of us have in all the time we've owned the house! If you have any "extras" to add on to the project, Tom will accommodate you whenever possible. And the length of time required to complete projects has been shorter than expected. My friends' projects always seem to take months. Mine have taken days. And the quality is excellent. He really pays attention to the details.
Description of Work: Amount is for labor only. This project included four items: bathroom renovation, island added to the kitchen, tiling the foyer and putting overhead lighting in the basement. Bathroom: installed new tile floor with grout. Installed new toilet which required fixing the old flange in the floor because it was too high and the old toilet was kind of balancing in the air and leaking. Replaced vanity, sink, faucet, cabinet, showerhead. Replaced mildew damaged sheetrock with blueboard. Wired the ceiling and installed overhead can lights. Upgraded wall outlets. Installed new vanity lights. Fixed the doors so they would close, and addressed the problem of a door frame that wasn't nailed to anything. Basement: wired the work half (laundry, etc.) of the basement and installed lighting. Kitchen: added an island to match what was done last fall. Foyer: removed old floor and installed new tile with grout.

It all began with a very tired-looking kitchen. I didn't have high expectations for the "wow" factor, but I was wrong. I ended up "wowed" by the contractor, the extremely reasonable cost and my new kitchen. One of the things I liked most about working with Tom was his insistence on quality. He knows the right way to do things and doesn't cut corners. He's very picky about the finished product. It was almost a contest to see how precisely his mitered corners would come together. Tom is very knowledgeable so he can anticipate and point out problems. Our kitchen design called for the plumbing to go along the wall behind the cabinets and bend around behind a corner cabinet to reach the dishwasher. I never thought about it, but what if a pipe behind the cabinets sprung a leak? Thanks to Tom's recommendation, the dishwasher ended up next to the sink so the plumbing is now accessible. The change meant moving the electrical box for the stove and the ceiling exhaust ducts to the other side of the kitchen, but his crew did that quickly and efficiently. And his recommended changes actually resulted in more usable countertop space. Bonus! Another great thing is that when he gets a sense of what you like, he suggests options you may not have known about. When he mentioned that I might want to check out some vinyl tiles that looked like stone and were groutable, I turned my nose up, but looked at them anyway. They were perfect! The result looks very high end and our guests have even asked if we put in heated floors because the tile doesn't get cold under foot. In the end, these little touches made the kitchen look upscale and expensive, when it wasn't. My husband works nights and Tom was very accommodating, moving his work hours to match our schedule. He and his crew always arrived promptly when expected. His attitude is 100% "No problem, can do." He means it, and delivers. Having a full kitchen installed in under a week was unbelievable and far exceeded my expectation. Tom and his crew are friendly, customer focused people. They are always looking at what's best for the homeowner and go out of their way to fulfill requests for the extra little things you think of along the way. And at the end of the day, he checks around to make sure his crew cleaned up the work site before heading home. It's service with a smile that left us smiling, too.
Description of Work: Kitchen replacement. Took out the old kitchen to the point of bare walls and no lighting. Tore out plywood and installed new subfloor for stability. Installed all new cabinets with trim, microwave and dishwasher. Relocated the electrical box and exhaust fan to the other side of the kitchen for the stove. Ran plumbing to hook up ice maker in refrigerator. Wired the attic and put can lights in the ceiling; installed outlets and led lighting under the cabinets. Installed 18ft tile backsplash and tile floor. Put in an undersink water filter with countertop faucet.
