When my husband and I purchased a retirement home in New York, we had no idea how to go about finding the right person to do our remodel, especially since we lived in another state. Luckily, my husband found Larry Becker of Maple City Contracting on Angie's list after a bad encounter with a shyster for lack of a better word. Mr. Becker is a highly honest, knowledgeable, and excellent contractor. Not only that, but he actually communicates with his clients. Communication for us was key; we knew the work was going to be extensive and that we couldn't do it all at once, but Mr. Becker worked us into his busy schedule and responded to every one of our emails, and believe me, we sent a lot. For all these reasons and more, we found Larry's professionalism to be off the charts. He is someone you can definitely trust. Furthermore, he and his crew do outstanding work. The craftsmanship is laudable and meticulous. Being a lover of HGTV, I had many ideas and wanted things done right. After all, we were paying for a contractor's expertise, so that's what we expected, and with Maple City Contracting, that's exactly what we got. I could go on and on about how awesome are experience was and still is with our contractor as we approach the final stages of our remodel, but I'd rather just end by saying that everyone who has seen the interior of our house, admires the carpentry and wants the name of our contractor. Mr. Becker and his team's work speak for itself. I'd give him three thumbs up, but I only have two!

Poor. Not As Expected. I Used Larry in Past; several times for Electrical Work in the year 2015 and was very good back then. Larry had 2 New Workers; if any; They Had to Redo their work Numerous times. When I Confronted Larry He Became offended when I informed him regarding his new worker's mistakes (scratches on siding missing nails, siding cut short). Larry advised me "that he cannot stop cutting the window/door trim and check on his employee's at the same time and advised me that he would fix all the mistakes when the Job is completed. I told Larry this is not acceptable and each mistake should be fixed before any other work is completed-He became Confrontational and very agitated when any problem occurred. To this date 6/24/19. Twenty-Two working days; Larry still has not completed the job. He stated he would come back on 6/22/19 and did not show up or call. To this date 6/24/19 I still have not received a final bill from Larry!

Response from Maple City Contracting Co
Mr. [Member Name Removed] started out as one of the best clients we have had, providing us with refreshments and lunch for my workers, but he quickly evolved to be by far the worst client we have served in 17 years of business. The work I had done in the past was totally acceptable to him. He told me that he had hired us based on my past work and over the other contractors he made inquiries to for the same work. However, from the start of the project, he made repeated comments on our ability to get the work done the way the other contractors had told him. He made countless derogatory remarks the I was incapable of directing my crew when he wouldn't leave me alone long enough to address any issues. He threatened that he was going to write a bad review on Angie's List several times when I told him we would perform the work as specified and not by his wishes. I directed him to confirm my statements concerning many issues through the internet, however, when asked, he hadn't done so. He obviously had it in his head how things are supposed to done to his specifications when he had never installed siding himself. He marked his house with chalk citing the smallest of issues and stating we hadn't used nails to install the siding and that there was too large of gaps at the termination points. I informed him that siding moves and even after showing him how some of the panels he claimed we not tight enough moved back into place with a push and that the excessive gaps were really a function of how the panels moved throughout the day, he still wasn't satisfied. Therefore, we re-installed these panels with a tighter than required spacing and told him that we would not warrantee the product from possible "oil canning" due to the panels lack of required spacing. This statement is noted on his invoice as well. Upon opening the siding for inspection, it was found that all nails were in place as to be consistent with manufacturer's specifications. Why didn't he just hire the other guy if he thought we were going to do the work not to HIS specifications? He kept telling me "the other guy said you should do this". I found myself constantly on the defensive as his OCD and constant attacks of belittlement continued throughout each day. He insisted on hermetically sealing the house with pre-existing wood remaining between the vapor barrier and the new foam board and ignoring my consistent warnings that he was stopping any convective air flow and that mold may develop in the remaining wood fibers, then directing us to install the siding out of tolerance without the correct expansion spacing and sealing all ports for drainage at the J channel junctions. He ignored my constant advisements not to perform the installation as he wanted us to, rather than complete the installation to manufacturer's specifications. Further, he handled much of the siding materials himself moving the panels un-boxed approximately 100 yards from the storage site on the back of an ATV when he was advised not to. When it was brought up to him that he may be damaging the panels himself from improper handling he accused me of purposely damaging a piece of siding to make my point. At this point, he had insulted my intelligence a minimum of 6 times and after questioning my integrity, I simply could not take any more. Most of these incidents were captured on recordings that the client was unaware I was making. I normally do not record my cliental, but I felt I had no choice but to document his actions based on his comments. With exception of 2 downspout straps minor caulking in a small area above a window and a 2"x36" strip of wood that was to be installed as an extension for a storm door threshold, the work is complete. I didn't contact Mr. [Member Name Removed] over the weekend because quite frankly, I needed time to cool down and re-group before returning to complete these small tasks and close out the work order. I had planned on returning this morning, (6/25) to finish the work myself, as my employees refuse to return to his house for more verbal abuse. Mr. [Member Name Removed] hasn't received a final invoice yet because I was waiting for his final approval on the fore mentioned items. However, based upon his negative review of a job that every visitor who had seen the work while we were there said it looked awesome, we will not be returning to complete these tasks. He can call one of the other guys that in his eyes are obviously much better than us. I will be sending him a final invoice via email because after his negative review of a job well done (over the top), I can't stand being around him anymore and taking his abuse. The invoice will reflect a discount for the work not completed as stated above. Further, as Mr. [Member Name Removed] wants to make bad reviews of our work that was completed to standards much higher than most of our competition, I will return the favor and spread the word to every contractor within the area to stay away from this client if they want to keep their sanity. Good Luck Mr. [Member Name Removed].

I would highly recommend this contractor. We needed help replacing a door after a break-in at a second property in a different state. We were able to make arrangements over the phone, meet the contractor on a specified date when he took measurements and the door was installed the next day. He was professional, organized, and very accommodating.

Larry Becker, owner of Maple City Contracting, was patient and totally professional considering that there was the coordination between architect and County code enforcer and actually enhanced the drawing of the architect with the code enforcer?s blessing. Larry gave me much time on the phone to explain the complexities of the project and was willing at the end to help me with some unrelated misc items to the adjacent apt to make it rentable. Larry is very honest and reliable. The only drawback is that you have to wait your turn to get his services because he is so in demand.
Description of Work: Removed old 2nd story deck with its cantilever supports and external staircase leading to a first floor deck and replaced it with a new wood upper deck, intermediate landing and complex staircase - all built to stamped drawing. Plus installed 6 gusset supports and 4 cross buck supports, along with the installation of 3 black steel concrete bollards to protect the structure from possible errant traffic from the driveway.

Our area has lost power several times during a lightening storm and we need a Generator for winter emergencies. Larry Installed a Whole House Generator for our Home. I applied for a Permit through my Town-Larry provided me with his previous client photos and Generator Specifications for the Code Officer. I provided all the materials; except $38.91 worth of materials. The Store I bought the Generator from placed it on the concrete pad with their Forklift. Larry re-wired the transfer switch to the existing service pannell. He installed all the necessary components for the generator and LP Gas. My new propane company installed a new propane tank and trenched a new LP line. He then returned to test the Generator after The LP Tank & Lines were in place. The total time it took Larry to complete the whole project was approximately 21 Hours. Larry set up and met with a Certified Electrical Inspector for a final inspection.
Description of Work: Installed Concrete Pad, Installed two 4x4 posts, Installed Whole House Generator, Installed Transfer Switch, Installed Junction Box, Installed all parts for Generator & Propane Hook-up- (except 3 propane regulators).

Larry arrived @ my house on time-9am to install three surge protectors in my basement. I was "previously" having severe trouble with my electrical system & Larry rewired my 200amp Service Panel & installed a Main Disconnect Box outside. I was having power surges in the past that were destroying my appliances & surge protectors. "I purchased" 3-surge protectors online to further protect my home. { I paid $118.00 for the Whole House Surge Protector, $69.88 for the Telephone Line Surge Protector, and $39.97 for the Coaxial Cable Surge Protector.} 1. Larry installed a Whole House Surge Protector next to the 200amp panel & hard wired it to my existing 200 amp panel. 2. Larry re-wired & re-routed the existing phone lines. He then installed a Telephone Surge Protector next to the 200 amp panel and grounded to the 200 amp panel. 3. Larry installed a Cable Surge Protector in the middle of my basement. He ran a ground along existing wires to the front of my house & and installed/grounded it in the 200amp panel. 4. Larry tested the 200amp/main breaker for sufficient power to the whole house. Larry finished the job at 2pm. Excellent Work & Price! Very Professional! I would highly recommend Larry as a General Contractor for ANY of your Home Improvement Needs!

Larry came out to my house within one hour of my first phone call to troubleshoot the whole house electrical problem. We had flickering lights, power surges, blown out furnace, blown out new pellet stove, and several surge protectors destroyed. We had limited to no power due to a bad disconnect box outside @ the road. Larry was in constant contact with myself regarding the disconnect with the electric company and obtaining the Inspector. He notified the Electric Company that his customer has Medical problems, and he put pressure on them to put a rush on the disconnect. Larry said he would be @ my house at 9am but arrived about 30 min. early to set up a tent over the outside electric boxes. It was snowing outside and it was 10deg. F. The Electric Company came to disconnect the power-Larry advised the Supervisor to get here today to turn on the power when he is finished installing the disconnect box. He then removed the old disconnect box. Installed: New disconnect box, new wiring, new breakers, and reconnected PVC with cleaner and glue. Larry also installed new wiring in the (top) meter box and cleaned it out. The Electrical Inspector arrived early(appointment set up by Larry); just when he was finishing up the top wiring box. ****I paid the inspector for the inspection of $100.00.**** -This is not included in the price. Larry called the Electric Company Supervisor back to turn on the power and they were at my house within 45min. to turn the power back on. Larry then went to my basement and removed all the wiring from my 200amp service panel and re-wired the panel correctly. Larry cut a notch in my ceiling joist to raise the panel up to A-line with the incoming outside wires. He installed new connecters throughout the panel (about a dozen+) and installed 3 large round caps in the panel. Larry re-installed all wiring neatly and tested all the breakers. (this part of the job wasn't to be performed until feb2015, but Larry stayed late to finish the job 1/12/2015.) Larry installed a new transformer in the furnace; the propane furnace fired right up. Larry stayed until 7pm that day-1/12/15, to make sure everything was working properly. Excellent Job! Larry kept me informed at all stages of the Electrical work performed. I would definitely Hire Larry again! .
Description of Work: Larry found the cause of electrical system malfunction in my home. He Scheduled a power cut from Electric Company at the service pole & Scheduled a new main disconnect inspection from the Electric Company. He Obtained all materials; i.e.: Disconnect box, wires, breakers, and transformer for furnace. Larry removed my existing primary main disconnect box; outside near the road, and replaced it. He removed the existing wiring within the basement service panel and re-wired the panel correctly. Larry installed a new board supply transformer in the furnace.

Larry's performance places him head and shoulders above any of his competition in the Western NY area. From the beginning to the end it was a very professional experience. Larry came to my house to survey a complete bathroom remodeling project. At the conclusion of the survey Larry provided me with a thorough estimate of materials and labor. In addition to that he guided me on material selections and options I had not considered. During the project Larry overcame some significant challenges with plumbing and structural problems that were not evident during the survey. At each step of the way Larry provided me with daily updates. In the end I was extremely pleased with the results I highly recommend this contractor for any home improvement project, and I plan to use him again.

Their work is superb, and they are not happy until you are happy. Larry, the business owner, is gracious, respectful, professional, and qualified in all areas of home repair, remodeling, etc. His estimate of costs was way under what I had expected to pay for so much detailed work. I wouldn't hesitate to call him again and again.
Description of Work: Larry and his crew completely renovated two of my downstairs rooms, and spruced up two others (smoothing old walls, installing new ceilings in three rooms, repairing and replacing doors, repairing floors, removing old wallpaper, installing wainscoating, jacking up a floor, ripping out and disposing of old carpeting, painting walls and trim, electrical work, etc.)

We have a shower stall that needs to be re-done, new tile and some plumbing work. Larry Becker came to our home, looked over the shower. He said he was going on vacation, so it would be a week or so before he would get back to us with the cost estimate. After a week and a half, we didn't hear from him, so my husband called Larry. Larry said he was still working up a price and would get back to us. We wanted to hire him. We waited for his call. He never called. If he didn't want the job, he should have had the decency to call and let us know. That would have been the professional thing to do.

I used Angie's List and found this contractor in my area. The contractor came to my residence and measured for job(s). The contractor was able to find materials the were below the price they quoted me, which saved me several hundred dollars. They completed the work to my satisfaction. I would totally recommend this contractor for any needs. This contractor is A+++ when it comes to quality of work, courtiesness, dependability, and looking out for saving the consumer money in seeking materials. THIS CONTRACTOR IS GREAT!!!

Larry Becker is terrific! I purchased my first home in May of 2012 knowing that there was knob and tube wiring still in use. Larry is a man of his word and worked within my budget to accomplish everything I wanted. I cannot say this enough, Larry showed up on time each day, worked diligently until the project was complete, and had everything cleaned up before I got home from work each day which was very important to me being a single mom with two young children. Larry does excellent work. I have a very old house with numerous future projects and he is the only contractor I will use.
Description of Work: I hired Larry to upgrade the electrical service to 200 amp, rewire the house including additional outlets, ceiling fans, and light fixtures as well as install a hard-wired smoke and CO2 detector system. I also had some additional work done including installing a cat door, a window air conditioning unit, and security chains on my exterior doors. He also repointed my chimney after discovering it was leaking CO2 and fixed a leaking water line for my freezer's ice maker.
