Mattern Masonry is a family owned business in the Rochester area. Whether you're looking for a small repair or large masonry project, attention to detail and customer satisfaction are always our focus. Most types of payments are accepted and estimates are free. Customers appreciate that the President of the company, Benjamin Mattern, will be the one to go over design, write up the estimate, oversee, and work on your project. Despite being a small company, Mattern Masonry is well known for the quality and honesty of their work. We look forward to working with you!
Ben Mattern showed up for the estimate on time and emailed the written estimate within 2 days. Ben and his crew showed up to perform the work when they said they'd be there, only challenge to that was the weather, conditions did extend the length of time needed to complete the job. Despite "surprises" discovered during demolition (unexpected structural features beneath the planter in front, three layers of concrete in the old patio - 16" thick in places), Ben and company worked steadily towards completion of the work. The finished job looks incredible ! We are extremely pleased with both the experience, price and completed project !
Description of Work: The front wall of our house (built mid 1950's) was covered by molded concrete, made to look like slate. There was also a built in planter running along the entire front wall, interrupted off center by the front door. After 60+ years, the planter was severely cracked, concrete in poor condition. The rest of the wall looked old, stained with minor cracks throughout. The back concrete patio was also severely cracked in several places and the steps to the rear door were in poor condition.

Description of Work: We had a stamped concrete patio put in behind our house. Ben was very responsive to our first call and came out right away to give us an estimate. We liked his professionalism and decided to book. Unfortunately, he was in the middle of a big job, so it took a while for the job to actually get started. Ben communicated with us regularly to let us know when he would begin. Once started, however, it was done in a few days. In the middle we added on a sidewalk leading up to the patio from the driveway. It all looked amazing when finished! We would happily use Mattern Masonry again!

This project was a little unique in that we were placing a new garage slab (foundation) under an existing garage. The garage is about 100 years old, and never had a foundation. It was literally built on the dirt and rotting away as a result. There was an existing asphalt/concrete floor that was between the walls, but nothing underneath them but dirt. I got permits, lifted the garage, demo'd the existing floor, built concrete forms and placed rebar, and then had Mattern Masonry come in to place the concrete and finish it. Ben Mattern came on site to quote the job and discuss specifics of the project. He was able to meet me the same day that I called him and he was on time. I work as an engineer and often work with large commercial contractors and detailed concrete specification. I included some of those specifications into my plans and Ben was not quick to dismiss them as other contractors I got quotes from were. Many of the things that make for strong concrete also make it more costly and difficult to place and finish. Ben was aware of these requirements and willing to do the job as specified. Others who quoted (and didn't get the job) would say things like and quot;that's not necessaryand quot;, and quot;we don't need to do thatand quot;, and quot;that's overkilland quot; etc. Ben's response indicated to me that he intended to do a quality job, was trustworthy, and professional. Day of the job the crew arrived at 7am sharp just as arranged. We had a small concern from a neighbor about contractors cars parked in the street in front of their house, and the crew responded professionally and politely. By 7:30 the crew was set up and the first concrete truck arrived. Ben came up with a really smart way of moving telephone lines out of the way for the truck which saved me from having to take them down. By 9:00 all concrete was placed and screeded and floated. They waited properly for bleed water to evaporate before each hit with the trowels. After the final hit with the trowels they gave the concrete two hours to set and and made control cuts with an early entry saw. Ben was the only contractor I could find who did this. Early entry cutting is considered a superior method for control joints as it creates a weak spot to guide cracking before internal stresses build up in the concrete. Other contractors wanted to come back the next day to make cuts, which might have worked but is a little more risky. After the cuts were made the slab looked great. The crew did a good job a cleaning up. In general they were very friendly and polite and knowledgeable about what they were doing.

Ben and his crew were fantastic . They showed up exactly when he said they would each day they were here . Ben for being young has a knack for not only knowing his trade but for managing and directing his crew . All worked very hard and knew exactly what was to be done and what was expected of them . Ben definitely provided a top notch product for fair price. I would not hesitate to have them to my home again if I need their services . Very professional .

Everything went well. Ben arrived on time, explained what caused the problem and how the repair was to be carried out, and was prompt with his estimate. I had some time constraints, so we set a tentative date after Labor Day. When the time came to do the work, Ben was on time, efficient and clean - there was a fair amount of jackhammereing and debris, but in both the pouring and demolition, everything was swept and cleaned up. The final product looks great, and I'll use Ben again when i need concrete or masonry work.

Our porch had developed two huge cracks allowing the porch to slope toward the house. The replacement was done with professionalism and experience. The owner was on the job during the entire installation and both he and his competent crew was always responsive to any questions or concerns. Once started, the job was carried through to its completion. I have already recommended this firm to several friends.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced cement front porch and sidewalk. The finished product was attractive and was imprinted to take the appearance of slate tiles. Very nice.

Terrible. They did come over per our phone call. I needed some repair and maintenance work done on my stamped concrete patio. I like Ben and though this would work out. I also wanted a quote on additional new jobs. Bottom line..I NEVER heard back from him for an estimate. My experience is that masons are horrendous. Why not just be up front and tell you they are not interested etc.I even subsequently called another so called and quot;Aand quot; rated mason and had the same result. NOTHING

(deleted member name), We apologize for you dissatisfaction with our company. I did send the quote, I apologize that you did not receive it. Sometimes an emails with attachments are sent to spam for some reason or the email address may have been typed in wrong. If you had notified me that you did not receive your estimate, I would have been more than happy to re-email it or send it in the mail. This message was the first indication I received that you did not receive an estimate. After reading your review, I re-emailed the quote to you and attempted to reach you by phone. Our small business has continued to thrive based upon word of mouth recommendations and reviews from our many satisfied customers. If you are interested in working with us, we would still be happy to hear from you.

Dear Sir, We apologize for your dissatisfaction with our company. I remember personally coming to your home and spending quite some time going over the layout and other details for your front walkway project. You and your wife seemed like very nice people and I am sorry we were not the company you chose to go with. My notes show that the estimate was sent, for whatever reason you did not receive it, I sincerely apologize. I am glad that you were still able to have your project completed. Have a great day and feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns. Sincerely, Benjamin Mattern

Mr. Mattern came to the house, gave us an estimate and responded to questions via email. He and his crew worked on the job for about 4 days. They were good about revising plans, for example tearing out the bushes. He and his workers were pleasant, polite and professional. The work was well-done and matched our expectations.

Ben was great. He gave a detailed estimate and was good at communicating for start date and details. He was on site everyday working, and the site was cleaned up every night. We had to make a couple of unexpected adjustments to the plans, and Ben thoroughly explained how and why things had to change. In the end, the patio came out wonderful and the stamping looks great. We've gotten lots of compliments. The guys were great and worked very hard - even in the 90 degree heat! We would definitely use them again.

Ben was AWESOME, he was the best estimate with the most detail, and included several custom features that were very specific to the site including under slab drain and custom grading of the pour. The tear out was very hard and the previous pour was done so irregularly that Ben had to completely level and back fill with new crushed stone and redo the whole underlay before pouring the slab. The job was professional and is colored to accent the house, and has completely upgraded the curb appeal and look as well as giving us a lovely new outdoor space that is much nicer than the old cracked and discolored slab.Ben was onsite with his crew, personally managing the job, his crew was neat and thorough, and cleaned and kept the site very tidy given the amount of excavation and power equipment that had to be brought in. He communicated each day where we were, and how everything was progressing and we were finished in great time.
Description of Work: We had the entire front concrete patio spanning the full front of our home, 450 Square feet, completely torn out, new crushed underlay installed, in slab drain with underground drain pipe, and new colored concrete patio poured. The front patio and attached walk are the first thing seen on approach to the home, and were cracked allowing water to come into the basement, and also looked terrible and was not usable for entertaining.

They have a good reputation. Our nephew is in the concrete business and he steered us their way. Everything turned out absolutely great! The tear out was the cleanest it could be. I have some utility cabinets out in the garage. Normally the homeowner would be responsible for taking them out of the garage, but I asked them if they would help me. They told me to just leave them there and that they would get them. They were competent with everything.
