I called this company in June I needed a new driveway they came out a couple of weeks later (first week of July ) gave me an estimate. I shopped around but after weighing the pros and cons specifically the price and actually them coming out I decided to go with Magic Seal the 3 year warranty and excellent reviews the deciding factor. Now it's the first of August I was told my contract was received but no day available to complete the job. 2 weeks passed then 3 I call to get an ETA still booked solid. Okay I tell myself it's summer and no doubt a very busy time. A couple more weeks go by and I return home from work to find the RGE marking the driveway I inquire about their activity and they informed me that it was for the new driveway and gave me the dates (Wow) imagine that, long story short the driveway was removed September 16 I heard nothing from the company nada. I called a couple of times to touch base and see when the job would be completed. I left a detailed message because their office hours are 9-3 informing Magic Seal of our frustration . Only to get a return message telling me to let them know if I needed help. It had been 5 weeks and not even a word from Magic Seal. Finally my husband talked to the Forman on for our job he apologized for the delay. He said he never returned our calls because he thought he was going to get cussed out. huh? By this time all I wanted to know is when are you going to be done with the driveway ? About a week and a half later they came put the driveway in and left without a word nothing we called the office to find out when we could park on it 2 days they said we waited 4 days to park on it. This is when we noticed a few spots that need attention I called left another detailed message requesting someone to return my call ....nothing. I have never felt so dismissed as a customer. The lack of customer service and professionalism was astounding. The final destination a new driveway was reached however the journey left a lot to be desired. I can't say honestly if I would use them again.

I am truly sorry of your bad experience with our company. This is the first I am hearing of this and I am very upset. Had I known I would of called you asap. We did have weather delays this summer later in the season which caused us to get behind, but that is not an excuse for you not to be notified. I hope you will accept my apology and if there are any issues with the driveway in the spring we will come back out and take care of them immediately. You can personally ask for me or Liz and let her know I emailed you and I will get them out there right away. When you call in the spring i will make sure you are compensated for your trouble. Thank you and again I am so sorry for my employee and his rude behavior, it will never happen again to you or any customer. Our company is all about good work, good customer service, and making sure our customers return because they are satisfied and knowledgable of the service they received. Tina Baughman President

The short review: Magic Seal did an excellent job prepping our very poor-condition gravel driveway and then paving it with asphalt, and we are very happy with the resulting driveway. However, I was deeply frustrated for two months beforehand at their lack of communication and commitment to a firm project date. The long review: Our property has a 950-foot-long driveway, which has been gravel since the house was built in 1998. Even though we had a load of fresh gravel laid almost every year, the winds from nearby Lake Ontario and the recent winters had seriously damaged the driveway, leaving it with ruts and potholes almost the whole length. In late July, my husband and I decided that we really needed to spend the money and get the driveway paved since fresh gravel was being eroded almost instantly. After researching on Angies List, I contacted Magic Seal and asked for an estimate. We promptly were visited by a representative who explained the options to us in a friendly, professional manner. We immediately had a good feeling about the company and asked for a contract with the written estimates for paving half of the driveway versus the whole driveway. I promptly received a contract, but my name was misspelled and the estimates were incorrectly tallied *together* rather than separate (thus doubling the cost of the project). I called the office, was fairly quickly able to confirm that the numbers shouldn't be tallied, and corrected the incorrect information. After our August vacation roughly a week later, I received the corrected contact and spent about a week conferring with our financial advisor, then signed and mailed in the contract the first week of September. And waited. No response from the company, which really surprised me. Any other contractor we've hired has immediately set a date for the work, if not able to begin immediately. After a week, I called the office and asked if they had received my contract? "Yes, it's on the desk with all the other contracts, we'll get back to you," was the response. Okay, I thought, they've got lots of work in the early fall, glad to hear a local company is doing well, they should get back to me in a few days with a date, I thought. And waited. After another week, I called again, got the same response. I politely emphasized that I very much wanted to get the driveway paved before winter, and if the company was too busy to do the work I understood and would simply go elsewhere. No, no, we definitely will get to you before winter, and we'll get back to you, I was told. This happened week after week, throughout September and into October, and I was getting deeply frustrated. I tried confirming at least "Can you estimate you'll do the work in late October, early November, some idea of when it will happen?" Again and again, the polite response "We'll get back to you" with no further specifics. Part of the reason for my deep frustration is that about half of my driveway has shared access with two of my neighbors, and I very much wanted to give them a heads up when the work happened so they would be prepared for the lack of access for a couple days afterward. I was also starting to really wonder whether the company was just so busy with other projects that mine would be ignored for so long that winter would come before it could be completed. I almost decided numerous times just to hire a different company, but I had signed a contract AND Magic Seal was very, very well rated on Angies List. Suddenly, one morning during the last week of October, I discovered a stranger walking my property... who turned out to be a power company rep. I learned he was flagging the buried gas, cable, and telephone lines so the pavers wouldn't damage them when they began their work. WOW! I was very relieved to learn -- albeit indirectly -- that the work was imminent, although it bothered me that no one from Magic Seal (or RG&E) had bothered to call me to make an appointment or at least alert me this would happen. No further communication for yet another week, which made me concerned again that this project was being backburnered, and then suddenly a phone call one afternoon from Magic Seal saying they would like to come prep the driveway *the next day*. Yes!!!!!!! I ran to alert my neighbors about the imminent work. The crew started promptly at 8 a.m. and quickly and thoroughly dug up, graded, and prepped the damaged gravel, then returned the next day and finished paving the whole length within half a day. I was very impressed that the crew were polite, professional, and did not leave any refuse behind on the property, which has sometimes happened with other contractors. The resulting pavement is even and of high quality the entire length of the driveway, even including in the often-swampy lower edge of the cul-de-sac by the house. I completely agree with the high marks on Angies List for quality and professionalism. I am still quite unhappy with their lack of effective communication, but I do feel they did great work and would cautiously recommend them to others. I imagine that a potential customer contacting Magic Seal at a less-busy time of year would get a much faster response and firm date for work.

Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to right such a beautiful review. My husband talked about you and your husband the day he came back from the estimate. He told me what kind and sweet people you both were and said if he could do it for free he would. He said you both were so nice to him and that you really listened to recommendations. We are thrilled your both happy with the complete job now that it is done. I will let him read this review and I know he will have a smile from ear to ear. Your driveway was just one of those jobs that needed a lot of work and he wanted to make sure it looked great. Customer satisfaction is so important to us and when you run across a job like yours that is a little more work and effort than some you want to make sure things turn out great. It was our pleasure to work with you both and thank you again for taking time to write the review it went a long way Tina Baughman

I just moved into a new home that hasn't had much upkeep on the driveway. Even though I was just getting the driveway sealed, they answered all my questions and made recommendations on things I can do in future that would be the most cost effective versus what would be the most income for them. I would definitely recommend them and plan on using them in the future.

Last week I came to know about an anticipated bad weather and the reason of the postponement of our scheduled first appointment through a call from Magic Seal. On the rescheduled day I was out and on my return the driveway was edged and sealed professionally just like last time.. I had used them two years ago and will use them in future too and would recommend them to everyone.

We requested a quote through their website and received a response early the next day. Several questions were answered via emails and responses were all professional and timely. They showed up as promised and completed the job quickly, using great caution where the pavement met paving stones and at the garage entrance. The driveway looks great. Thanks Magic Seal!

Let me start by saying that In the past we had been very happy with Magic Seal's Services. We have been using them for years to seal our driveway. They always provided this service at a lower price than anyone else, always on time and with good quality. We had been happy until this experience. We began the process of replacing our driveway in May 2015. My husband requested estimates from several suppliers so that we could get the best price and best quality of product for the money. I convinced my husband to use Magic Seal because we had good experience with them in the past, they held a #1 rating with Angie's list and they provided a competitive quote. We agreed to start the project on June 4th. The crew arrived and went to work removing the old driveway. In the process my husband asked the crew to level a one block portion of the sidewalk. It was replaced but at an awkward angle that allowed it to jut up at the end. My husband asked that this be leveled. The crew leader said no, we won't do any more....he didn't feel this was part of their job requirements. This left us with a portion of our sidewalk at an angle that we thought would be addressed when the asphalt was put in. At the same time the backhoe also pulled up the edging around our brand new patio. This edging is what holds the pavers in place. My husband asked for this to be replaced and the worker threw it in the trash. My husband retrieved this piece and replaced it later. While the removal was in progress, they discovered several concrete pads that were under the original asphalt. The crew leader said they needed to be removed. He also stated that more money was required to do this. He and my husband eventually agreed to increase the cost by $1000 to remove these pads. This took a second day to accomplish. Once the removal was complete, gravel was added and we waited the recommended time of three weeks for the new driveway to be put in. This was scheduled for June 29th. The workers arrived early on this very rainy day and began the installation while my husband worked in his office. The crew left our house without a word later that day. The crew leader arranged to pick up our payment in the afternoon. In the meantime my husband inspected the driveway . The rain had caused the roller to pick up dirt and along with the heat and the rain, dirt became imbedded in the asphalt resulting in very dirty looking streaks running up and down the driveway. Our brand new pavers had tar marks at the edge and garbage and a shovel were left haphazardly in the yard. In addition, the angled sidewalk was now even more prominent and has resulted in an unsightly trip hazard. My Husband spoke to the crew manager who assured us the streaks on the driveway and marks on the pavers would go away and that there was nothing he could do about the sidewalk. My husband believed him about the streaks and against his better judgement on the sidewalk problem, paid him in full. An additional note: we had to schedule the sealing of the end portion of the same driveway with the same company for a different time. The job should have been completely scheduled and completed as one job. After 7 days of not parking on our new driveway and trying to scrub out the streaks with no visual difference, we felt that we needed to talk to a manager in the company to resolve the issue right away. I called on Thursday July 2 and asked to speak to a manager. The woman who answered the phone took my number and said someone would call back. I received no call back. On July 6th, I left a message for the person who gave us the estimate...again no answer. On July 7th when I had received no call back, I tried the main office again and this time asked for the owner. I told the woman who answered that I would be calling again if I did not receive an answer. Again, I received no call back. In the meantime, my husband wrote a note to Magic Seal's general email address on July 7th simply asking for someone to come out and take a look. We were trying to give them a chance to resolve this. He also called the estimator of the company who actually answered the phone. Before my husband could speak, the person identified himself as the owner. He insulted my husband by saying "sometimes the customer is wrong and in this case that's true" He also said that my husband was trying to get something for nothing. (he was paid in full) He accused me of threatening him (which is untrue) and that "we are done" and hung up. This entire conversation was thrown at my husband without the owner EVER looking at the final results of his team. I am extremely disappointed with the product we received and the way we were treated. Yes, we have a new driveway. Yes, it looks better than the old one. But to see dirty streaks, tar on pavers and a crooked sidewalk every day is not what we paid for. All we are asking for is resolution on this. The cement sidewalk can be leveled with the right equipment - they did it the first time and they know they didn't do it correctly. Sealing the whole driveway would perhaps get rid of the streaks. As far as our pavers...I think they are a loss and will have to be replaced. I recommend anyone who is considering this company refrain from using them unless they fairly resolve this issue with us. Update 8/3: This company has never attempted to contact us directly nor has the owner come to our house to view the work. The fact remains that we have streaks down our new driveway that we now have to wait a year to seal and we have a trip hazard on our walkway that we will now have to address. This company does not feel the need to follow up because they have been paid. I am sure this owner would not accept this work at their own house under the same circumstances. The pictures speak for themselves. We invite those considering this company to stop by and see the quality of work you can expect from this company for yourselves. We would not recommend using this company for driveway replacement.

Response from Magic Seal LLC
In response to (member information removed) inquiry on Angie's List. Foremost, the Magic Seal team is disappointed that the residents at (member information removed) had an unpleasant experience. Our goal is to provide long term asphalt solutions with consistent quality and fair pricing. From the beginning of this project Magic Seal worked closely with (member name removed) on this removal and replacement of his driveway. (member name removed) even requested an exact day for work to begin which we obliged even though he jumped over his position in queue. After we removed his existing asphalt we found several slabs of hidden concrete buried underground along with a soft spot sink hole. This was the first uncomfortable experience between Magic Seal and (member information removed) as a change order was needed to resolve the unwanted, detrimental, inadequate sub-base that was not outlined in the original contract and scope of work. The homeowner was not comfortable with this $1800 change order that was needed to ensure a proper placement of long term asphalt. After much debate both parties agreed to a $1000 change order to remove the concrete and do a full depth, partial reconstruction of the sub-base. This price was at Magic Seals cost or below and was agreed because we wanted to ensure customer satisfaction. Magic Seal suggested that the concrete sidewalk should be removed as it was starting to deteriorate with obvious visual signs of fatigue and failure. Plus, the elevation of the sidewalk was variable making the transition between the existing concrete and the newly placed asphalt difficult. At this time we clearly explained the difficulty to make smooth transitions along with water flow drainage due to the existing elevations of the high sidewalk, lower patio and even lower garage floor. (member name removed) declined our suggestion and asked us to re level the old existing slabs of concrete sidewalk. Re leveling concrete sidewalks was not negotiated in the original scope of work, was not negotiated or outlined in the change order and moreover falls outside of our expertise and qualifications. And again after much debate Magic Seal re leveled the deteriorated piece of concrete to ensure customer satisfaction. The driveway was then left in stone for a few weeks and the customer picked their own asphalt placement date and the driveway was installed with the homeowner on the job site supervising the entire project. The trip hazard in his Angie's List inquiry was clearly discussed and outlined. If Magic seal matched elevations on the last highest concrete slab water flow would go into the customer’s garage and or patio. Then this inquiry and complaint would be about water flow and garage flooding instead of this. Clearly Magic Seal was in a no win situation on the project from the beginning. The streaks in the driveway as shown in the pictures are from the dirt and cement dust from the crumbling garage floor that will fade out and have no negative residual effects on the asphalt. After the driveway is cured it can be sealed and the streaks will no longer be visible. The "garbage" on the lawn as pictured is part of our barricade. The yellow cone which is our company logo is made of cardboard. The cardboard needs to be weighted down so we add job related debris (stone, asphalt, other recycled debris) . This with the light rain made the disposable cardboard cone wet and the debris fell out of the bottom. The tar along the pavers as pictured is not long lasting and Magic Seal will clean if this inquiry is reconciled. The asphalt has hot liquid black tar that is easily tracked near the edges, especially porous brick pavers. A shovel was left in the garage and was picked up 2 hours after driveway installation. Magic Seal regrets any inconvenience this left behind tool caused the homeowner. Finally, the free seal of the apron could not be executed on the same day due to the weather that day as it was misting light rain. Also, it's a different crew and mobilization. Magic Seal regrets any negative experience and wishes to rectify and satisfy each and every customer. In this case there are variables out of Magic Seals control to satisfy unsolvable elevations and unrealistic expectations. In conclusion, everything was outlined and discussed in our contract with more specifics and details than normal. Every detail was agreed upon at the time of payment and the job was inspected by the head of the paving division and passed with a very high grade. Magic Seal hopes to satisfy this customer and everyone thereafter. Thank You Very Much Tina M Baughman

We have a rental house and used Pittsford Paving last year, but they didn't come out to our house in Chili, so we used Magic Seal. We were happy with them last year so decided to use them for our rental as well. Pittsford Paving charged $120 and gave me a hard time about scheduling, but Magic Seal charged $85 and they were a breeze to work with. You literally call, they give you a date, come and they're done in 20 minutes. They have a great system both for scheduling and for sealing the driveway. They have enough people that it gets done quickly and is easily cheaper than it would cost to do it yourself. We really love working with them and the quality of the sealing material they use appears to be as good as what it was when we did it ourselves (before we knew better!).

Got a card in the mail to seal our driveway for $84 with $5 off if we called within a couple weeks. Sounded great! So we called. "Oh, your driveway hasn't been sealed before? That will be a little bit more." OK, fine. How much? "Well we just measured your driveway with the satellite image, and it will be $269." We were afraid it was bait and switch. Their service might be great, I have no idea. But I won't deal with a company that pulls that kind of stunt.

I am sorry you feel that you were being baited into calling. We have been in business almost 30 years with a good reputation, we don't get by on trying to "bait and switch". When you called in you had let us know your driveway had never been sealed before. As our card states, driveways that have never been sealed before would result in a price change. The reason for this is when a driveway has never been sealed, or hasn't been sealed in over 5 years, the pavement becomes very porous and soaks up a lot more of the material, thus resulting in a higher price. When we re-measured your driveway we found that your driveway was under-priced as is. This could be due to a change in the driveway since we were last out, or a mistake on our end. We were more than happy to honor the price of the card for a normal seal. With your driveway being new, there would be a higher price regardless. I would be more than happy to offer you a discount for any inconvenience this caused you. As I stated before, we have been doing driveways for almost 30 years and would never intentionally attempt to misrepresent ourselves or our pricing in any way. Please feel free to give us a call if you feel there is anything else we can do for you. Thanks and I hope you have a great day. -- Magic Seal LLC 2 North Shore Dr Hilton, NY 14468 585-581-2153 (of) 585-392-5189(f) baughmanonline@gmail.com

This was a smooth transaction, with excellent communication on their behalf from start to finish. The quote came quickly, they were able to schedule us within a week of accepting the quote for the driveway to be replaced. I believe it was Joe who was the foreman on my driveway. He called me to schedule, updated me on the project the day before the crew came, called me to let me know when they would be laying the asphalt, and the team left maintenance tips for the driveway as well. Some of which I would never have known otherwise. Their attention to detail was great, it looks beautiful. We plan on using them again.

I am sorry that you had a bad experience with our company. I am the owner of the company and its not our practice to ever turn away work unless we are booked for the season. If you called at the end of the year and we were booked then I apologize this year was a very rainy season and we stopped taking appointments a bit early this year to finish up all the customers already scheduled. It was not something we normally do but since the rain was such an issue for us this summer we had to make sure all the people already scheduled and reschedule four and five times were finished up before the fall. We take pride in making sure all the jobs that are scheduled get done before the season ends and in our line of work it is totally weather dependent which sometimes can delay work for weeks. I am very sorry and would love to offer you a 10% discount if you would like us to do the work in 2015. thank you Tina Baughman

I am sorry it took so long to schedule your appointment. We usually schedule two to three weeks out this time a year. Our mailers in your area went out in July so there was several months to call for an appointment when our window of work was larger. This time of year the days are shorter and the rain is more frequent. We have had a rainy season and the driveways were postponed quite a bit this year. We apologize that customers had to wait longer than usual to get their driveways done this year but the weather took a toll on us as well as the customers and we could not help the rain. We had 9 rain days in August and 11 in September and we worked 7 days a week to try and make up work when the weather was good. If rain is in the forecast and we work and the driveways wash and splash on houses we are responsible to reseal the driveways and clean the houses and that could cost thousands of dollars. Our company guarantees our work and we need to make a call when there is rain in the forecast and use good judgement for ourselves and our customers best interest. Thank you Tina M Baughman President/Owner

It was a great experience. We had to wait a few weeks to get it done but he came during the day and did the seal. The work he did was very clean and professional.

Good suggestions were offered by Magic Seal for the eventual large scale repair work to be done possibly next year. The work crew was on time, and did a great job at what we had discussed having done at the time the appointment was made. We have used this company two years in a row, and will use them again.
Description of Work: Consulted on more permanent driveway repairs Sealed a couple major cracks with heavier material Finish sealed the entire driveway

I contacted them through Angie's List (actually became a member in order to find a reputable asphalt and seal coat company the commercial property I manage) and spoke to their estimator on the phone and he assured me that his company did commercial work. I explained what I was looking for and he went to the property and consequently sent a proposal to me. It sounded fair and I was impressed with the professionalism of the written quote because it was precise and included a satellite view of the property outlining what they proposed. I explained that I wanted to meet him on the property myself just to be sure we were on the same page. Unfortunately, that week when I arrived on the property, I discovered that the town had ripped up the whole front of the property and the driveway entering the property in order to install new storm sewers and sidewalks. I had never received a notice from the town that this work was going to be done so I was at a standstill for Magic Seal to do their proposed job. I immediately called the estimator and explained the problem. He assured me that, when the town completed the work, we could put the job on the schedule. The town and their third party contractors took practically the whole summer to complete the job. As soon as they had signed off the property, I phoned Magic Seal to arrange that meeting because I decided to add to the area of seal coat and needed him to refresh the quoteif necessary. Many phone calls, no response led me to call their main number on the quote. At one point, I was told he was away and to call back on August 18th which I did. Still no response. I called them again and spoke to the office girl and explained that the estimator was not returning my calls and that, twice, his mailbox was full and was not accepting calls and that I wanted to meet with him and set up the job. She assured me that she would let him know and she said "he will call you back." I waited all day and nothing. On Wednesday, she called me back and told me that "he" told her to tell me that they are booked and cannot do the job this year! I told her I had a quote and reminded her of the predicament with the town. She said he told her that he just signed up a big restaurant deal and that they wouldn't have time to do my job, despite the fact that I had a quote in hand. Regardless of their five star rating with Angie's List, clearly their success has gone to their head and they think nothing of blowing off a $2,500.00 job for a "big restaurant deal." I give them a zero! Presently, I am on Angie's List looking for another company but, at this late time in the season, I am hoping to find a reputable company who will do a good job.
Description of Work: In the long run, nothing but deliver a quote.

To start, I am sorry that the town had taken so long to complete the work in front of your house. You even indicated in your message that it took them all summer long. When you were finally able to call us to get the work going, we were unfortunately booked for the season. If we had a signed contract from you it may have been different, but we had nothing from you other than a verbal response from you saying you were interested. I feel you leaving a negative review about us on Angie's List is unfair and out of our control. Feel free to contact us any time to talk about this further. Just to reiterate we never had a contract with you, if we had this matter may had resolved differently.

Im sorry this has been a very busy year since the rain has delayed us so much. Usually we do schedule about two weeks out in a normal summer without excessive rain. I do apologize and hope you call us next year thank you so much for your business Tina Baughman

I have used Baughman's service for about 15 years now. I am always thrilled with there service. They cover everything evenly and never and I mean never get the sealer on anything other than the driveway and it is right up to the edges of my walkway. I have sealed driveways before.By the time you buy the cold sealer, ruin a pair of shoes and have a toxic spreader to get rid of, you just can't do it for this price. They use a hot sealer and you can walk on it within hours. 24 hours before you drive over it and 36 to 48 to park on it. I have a double wide 100 foot drive and a 4 car side turn around. You can't do this yourself and have it look this good for under $100. It will last you 2 to 4 years depending on usage. I have a snow blower on a tractor with chains. The chains slipping removes the sealer so I have it done every 2 years. Small price to pay.

Came very late in the day into evening hours. Looked clean once done but product didn't even last a year! Apparently the quality product they used for my driveway was extremely poor!

We guarantee our work 100%. This is the first we have heard from this customer. Had they called last year or even this year we would come out to evaluate the driveway to see if it needed to be resealed. It could of washed from rain last year and needed to be resealed. The winter was extremely bad this year and that could of worn the sealer faster than normal which is no fault of ours if especially if he had the driveway plowed 40-50 times. Had he called we would of taken steps to rectify the situation and if it was an issue with the sealer or a problem Magic Seal caused we would have resealed it for free. Had he called us this would of been taken care of right away. We were never given the chance to rectify the complaint and if the customer would like to call us we will be more than happy to address any issue he has. Thank you Tina Baughman

The men showed up on the promised day and sealed the driveway. They apologized for being late, (about an hour) as they had very many driveways to do. The driveway looked great.

We've used them in the past and they are always reasonably priced. They do a good job and they are reliable. They show up when they say they will show up and they charge you what they say they will charge you. They do exactly what they say they will do. Also, in our area we have trouble getting people to give estimates but I have them come out to do an assessment if needed. He gave me couple of options. They are consistently good.
