I called for repair of my Magic Chef Range/Oven in which there is a slight smell of gas. I explained to the woman who answered the phone that I knew that the smell of gas was coming from the oven. She insisted that I call Con Edison so they could identify and tag the exact place the gas leak was coming from. A Con Edison Rep came by and immediately identified where the leak was in the oven. He also chuckled in disbelief that a service company would request I call them for that.
I called back and the woman stated she would get Bill out today. I asked what the charge would be and she said a service call but that it would go toward a future repair if necessary. Bill called and I explained that the Con Edison Rep told me that the Broiler Valve was leaking in my Magic Chef Oven. Bill replied he would be over as soon as he could.
Bill arrived and I showed him the Tag from Con Edison and pointed out the valve that was leaking. Bill asked several times where the leak was and I repeated, opened up the oven and pointed at least 3 times to the valve that was leaking. Bill seemed confused and then removed a few screws, claimed it was a double valve and that he thought it would be an expensive part.
Bill charged me $85.00 cash for 10 minutes of nothing and stated he would charge an additional $125.00 labor if I got the part myself. He then said if I had a friend who was handy they should be able to put the valve in.
Thinking back I actually kick myself for paying him since he already knew what the diagnosis was and literally did nothing.
My advice. Call the Manufacture of the appliance needing repair and have them recommend an authorized service center in your area. This way you get a real professional making the service call in the first place.

Bill has repaired my dishwasher, refrigerator, washing machine and dryer.
All repairs went well and when replacement is called for he will tell you. He is a straight shooter.
