Working with Jay Gunderson, the owner, was an excellent experience. He was very prompt, courteous, and responsive with questions. The process, overall, was seamless. He also made sound recommendations for me to consider, on options for refinishing, and materials to use. I highly recommend. My hardwood floors, kitchen, and entry way tile turned out beautifully.

Hired them to redo the wood floors in my 3700 square foot home, and install wood flooring in my entryway including floor molding in the entryway for $10,000. I will say, the owner is very polite and responsive. Unfortunately he just drops his guys off at your house for the day and leaves. The job on the floors was not great. I am a first time home buyer and people are shocked when I tell them I just had the floors redone, and SHOCKED when I told them what I paid. They all say for that kind of money you would have expected a less do-it-yourself finish. There are spots where the stain is not even, or the stain was rubbed off from over-buffing and never re-touched, there are extremely noticeable grooves on the floors under the polyurethane-especially in the hallways, there are spots with bubbles in the polyurethane, in my kitchen on the edge of the floors there are spots that are literally raw wood with no polyurethane on it (yet mind you I paid for 4 cots of polyurethane!)- Its very apparent that absolutely no care was taken to check their work and there was ABSOLUTELY NO ATTENTION TO DETAIL. I had them install wood flooring in my entryway, they were supposed to put up new moldings per my contract... they never did that at all. They got dark maple stain ALL OVER the floor moldings in the other rooms in the house, to cover the stain on my 6 inch floor molding I had to apply a stain cover primer, regular primer and 2 coats of paint! They literally only repaired or filled cracks in my floors that I told them to fill, other than that they would have left the cracks. What I'm really saying is they advertise a and quot;low price per square footand quot; but its really not worth it because the end job comes out looking very and quot;I did this myself and I had no idea what I was doingand quot;.
Description of Work: Refinishing of the wood flooring in my 3700 square foot home. Removed tile flooring from my 10X 12 entryway and installed and finished oak flooring, per the contract they were supposed to replace the moldings in the entryway as well (they never did).

Response from Gunderson Flooring and Design
To (member name removed) and for the Angies List community. I would like to reply to this review by saying I am sorry to hear you are displeased and have un-addressed concerns with the work we performed. I am not familiar with replying to a bad review...I consider a C a bad review. As with all businesses, it is not the question of, if you have problems, but how you resolve them. I am committed to meeting or exceeding my customers’ expectations. I am perfectly willing and capable of performing any work needed to bring the project to (member name removed) and would be happy to set a schedule to do so. This review is the only notification I received that there are concerns with the work since we finalized the project with the inspection process. I hope I am given the opportunity to make any adjustments to the work performed. I closed the job informing the customer to please contact me after they move in, I will be happy to touch up any scratches or mishaps that may occur after we leave,a courtesy I extend to all home owners on a whole house projects prior to move in. At that time the customer was pleased with the work and sincerely thanked me, and I them . Not as an argument, but to address the specific complaints in the review: Flooring work: There is a rigorous end of project procedure we go through to complete each project and collect final payment. I ask the customers, as I did with (member name removed), to look the job over carefully, and place post-its or indicate any areas of concern (customers are usually the first home or on site to see how the previous coat of finish has dried). I address the post-its placed by the customer and perform any touch ups additionally I may find. In this case primarily to the kitchen ( a few drips of finish at the island and bubbles near the back sliding doors, possibly caused by a draft allowing dust in the finish) and the hallway leading to kitchen (herringbone pattern flooring, touch ups to raised board lines where buffing process removed some stain. Fresh stain was applied on board lines in aprox 2’x5’ area and sealed with finish again) . There were minimal touch ups needed elsewhere through the home and the filling of gaps to the nosing’s where the spindle’s are attached at the hallway. All touch ups were done and balance collected. At the time I was thanked and paid for a job well done. The Flooring work we provided is sound. It is up to and above industry standards. All procedures and techniques were performed in exact accordance to NOFMA Specifications w an adept hand at these techniques Any additional embellishments or details would require minor touch ups. There are NOFMA inspectors available to evaluate flooring projects and impartially evaluate and report their findings as to any customer/contractor issues to quality of work, and reasonable expectations for a properly sanded and finished floor. I would be happy to perform any work specified by the inspector. I am fully confident any findings would require minimal work, if any. Dropping men off: I performed many of the difficult tasks on the project. I removed and replaced the bordered inlays in the Dinning room which were changed. I performed the reinstall of the Entry foyer which was changed from marble to wood. I performed final touch ups and completely recoated the kitchen floor for the 5th time (with no additional charge). All areas of the kitchen are fully and carefully coated up to cabinets, appliances, and large island. I set up, instructed, and worked with the men as needed throughout the project. I never just dropped anyone off. Cost: 3700 sq ft sanded and finished with stain @ $2.00 sq ft is competitive fair pricing. Rip up all carpets, remove entry tile, and reinstall with oak flooring. Remove and replace existing entry base moldings Total project $9750.00 Fair cost for the job specification, by no means excessive. Other contractors and estimates were reviewed by the customer. Molding install and stain on existing moldings: We were originally contracted to remove and replace existing moldings in the entry foyer (small 12x14 area). We were requested by customer to install new moldings to doorways, and arches which changed the profile of existing moldings to be replaced. This was addressed w an additional work order. We were also contracted to perform painting and patching work to Living room and Family room. We began this work and asked to stop due to budget restrictions and the amount of work needed. We were told an uncle/family member or themselves would continue the carpentry and painting work. I will gladly install the existing base molding, we installed what was possible up to the new moldings in doorways. As for stain on the molding, yes touch ups are needed to base board molding when applying stain, especially dark stain. We applied stain and did touch the moldings doing so, but certainly not excessive or sloppily. it was discussed during the onset that touch ups would be needed and the moldings throughout would most likely need to be pained due to the fact of previously installed carpet, removing and replacing moldings, and the work being performed. Attention to Detail: Every effort was sincerely made to make these floors and the work we performed the best possible. Closing: I would like to say that I would be happy to address any post-its placed on flooring to specifically address any areas of concern, thus revisiting the end of project process. I have no ill will or bad feelings about this review or continuing the work. The Sclafanis' and I had a very nice working relationship during the process. I would have preferred an email to me with a list of these concerns. Hopefully the next review by (member name removed) will confirm I brought the work to her liking and she would gladly refer me and give me an A+ rating. . Sincerely, Jay Gunderson owner operator Gunderson Flooring and Design est 1984

I bought a beautiful remnant at Stark Carpet and sought out a service that could pick up bind and deliver my area rug. Jay Gunderson was extremely responsive to my needs. He picked the rug up from the warehouse the next day and gave me many choices for binding. We found a binding that fit my style and budget. Jay and his son delivered the bound rug very quickly and installed it perfectly, moved my furniture into place and was very professional. All this was done in a weeks time and I could not be happier with my discovery of Jay Gunderson Flooring. I highly recommend!

He did not do the work but the quoting process was smooth.
Description of Work: I recently contacted Jay Gunderson to give me a quote on sanding, restaining, and finishing the hardwood floors on my 3,000 square foot, 2 story house. He was very prompt in scheduling and providing a (very competitive) quote. He had a lot of knowledge on the process, the different stain colors, sealant textures, etc. We ended up changing our plan and did not use him to do the work so I cannot review the actual work.
