When i received the estimate I was shocked at the $20,500.00 price, [there was a coupon for $100.00 off, less than 1/2 of 1% of the job]. I was also surprised to see the replacement roof was going to be shingle and not metal, and there was no option for metal or discussion of materiel type. As a business owner and having worked in construction in the past I felt it necessary to go up on the roof and make my own evaluation and or repair, on the roof it was evident the flashing had lifted on the west side of the chimney and making a gap of 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch where the flashing met the roof. I was able to re nail the flashing down and reseal the two joining surfaces to do a proper repair. A full assessment of the roof was also made at that time, it is older but there where no signs of rust through or tears in the metal surface indicating it necessary for replacement at this time. We all have different ways of doing business; at this time where we are in a tight economy and trying to be "green", to just throw out something before it has served it's useful life and sell a replacement when the customer asks if it can be repaired is not serving the customers needs and not doing good business from my perspective. Tom came highly recommend and his work quality might be excellent, I did not get that far with him.
Description of Work: Tom McMahon came out to my property in Rosendale NY to give an Est on a leak. I was told "it looked like it was coming from the chimney flashing and the roof was worn to the point to replace the entire roof. As it is a metal roof I asked if it could be repaired or the flashing redone. Tom told me he did not do that kind of work and the "right way" was to replace the entire roof. Tom asked for my email address and said he would have an estimate to me by the end of the week. I received the estimate on time as he said, Thursday 11/18.

I looked in the Ulster County Yellow Pages under "repairs" and found the McMahon Home Improvement ad appealing. Tom McMahon was very punctual when he came to look at the job, provided me with a written estimate promptly and completed the job on scheduled. and the work site was left perfectly clean. My son-in-law, who is very handy and particular, was very satisfied with the work done. I highly recommend McMahon's Home Improvement and will definitely use them again, should the occasion arise.

In addition to lacking professionalism as above, he was very rude in his interactions, especially with my wife.
Description of Work: I hired him to do some garage work which he did fine with. We gave him 2 weeks to do a simple painting task for us and gave him a deadline to do it. The weather was bad on some of those days, but he didn't show up on any of the sunny days. He told he us he would be there on Saturday to do the job per our deadline, which was a perfectly sunny day. He never showed up and finally when I called him, he said he sent his painter to another job. He didn't even have the courtesy to tell us he wasn't going to do it on the day he promised he would.

Response from McMahon's Home Improvement
McMahon's Home Improvement received and emergency call from this client: The client was selling their house and was having an open house in 24 hours but had not done an important repair recommended by their Realtor in time for the event. We came immediately and completed the project for them in time for their open house. The client then requested some other work which included exterior stain/paint during some of the rainiest time last Summer. Each time we scheduled the work it would rain either on the day of or on the day before leaving a wet/damp surface that could not be stained/painted. The last time we scheduled to try to complete this work, the same thing happened and unfortunately we took for granted that the client would know after three previous reschedules for the same reason that we would not be coming if the surfaces were wet or even damp. We should have contacted them to be sure and are sorry about that. As to the rudeness referred to in the report: From the start there was friction because we showed up in the morning on the day we agreed to start at the time we had scheduled with the member but woke up his wife who has children and had had a sleepless night. She was very very unhappy to be woken up. I did not apologize profusely as we were there at the time we agreed upon with her husband---this was a mistake as from then on we could do nothing right in her eyes. Weeks of intermittent rainy weather continued. When we did not show up on the last scheduled day/time to paint/stain, the client called to express displeasure at our not communicating about coming and we explained that we thought it was obvious that we could not paint or stain when the wood was wet and asked to reschedule. At the client's irate response, we decided that the relationship was not working and went over to discuss the matter and make amends. Upon arrival, I discovered that my signs had been put into the trash by the client. At this, there was nothing to do but get my signs and leave but the clients wanted to justify their act with a confrontation.I feel that the fact that only words were spoken--with no profanity on my part--was an achievement, and we parted without my having any expectation of payment from them. Soon after though a check arrived for the first work we had completed for them and we thought the issue was settled. When discovering 2 months after the fact that she had given us a very bad report on Angie's List, my wife/partner called her to politely inquire about it. She had what she thought was a good conversation which gave her the opportunity once again to vent her ire about my "rudeness" and my partner apologized well and often during the conversation knowing that a rational discussion was not going to happen. She went on to say that she thought that I had "looked down" on her for being a woman and of her East Indian descent. My partner assured her, and rightly so, that I am the least prejudiced person she knows and that I would never "look down" on a woman or a person of color. She then elucidated her level of education and that she was born in the USA, which my partner assured her again was NOT an issue. After all was said and done she said she would talk with her husband about removing the report as she could see that we are a family business and she understood that my partner could do nothing but apologize about the unfortunate events. Two months have gone by without the removal of the report and we felt the need to respond. We have an extensive list of references from a diverse group of community leaders, Realtors and homeowners of both genders and various sexual orientation. To view some of these references just go to our website or call us for a faxed or emailed list. We regret that this incident ever occurred but cannot change the past. McMahon's Home Improvement provides a high level of customer service and quality craftsmanship for which we have been rewarded with many, many repeat customers who use us exclusively. In the future, we will be vetting our clients more closely before accepting projects and communicating at a level and in a manner that best suits each client. If you would like to speak to the member in person about this matter, please call us and we can supply their home and work phone numbers. Sincerely, Thomas R.
