Folkes Home Services recently did a complete duct system install of a new 3-ton heat pump, to add whole-house air conditioning to our boiler-heated home. I recently had Folkes in my home to do some work in my home to resolve some heating issues. I was so pleased with their work, that I invited them back to estimate a potentially large plumbing job. I bought my home a couple years ago as a bit of a fixer upper. One of my biggest challenges has been getting heat to circulate throughout the home. I’ve had two companies try to fix the problem and neither was able to resolve it. Both of them tried something that didn’t work. Finally, my neighbor recommended Folkes. They were amazing!! Greg Murphy was INCREDIBLE! Even though it was a very complex problem, he had it diagnosed and resolved in no time at all. He even made recommendations on how to prevent it from happening again. I appreciated his honesty and integrity. Now on to the cost—it was more than reasonable; only a couple hundred dollars for the whole thing. We made the decision to install central air this past summer and hired Folkes to do the job for us. They were very knowledgeable while providing the quote and doing the actual install. Generally, we are pleased with the work that was done and the technicians they sent out to do the work. Our job was being done during one of the numerous heat waves this summer and some scheduling issues popped up, but Folkes worked to resolve those and sent guys to our house on a Sunday to continue the install which we were impressed with. They also replaced both thermostats and later came back to clean out our dryer vent which I had initially requested. The only thing that disappointed us somewhat was the lack of cleaning up, both by the techs and the electrical subcontractor. Folkes did a great job cleaning up the first day cleaning and vacuuming as they cut the holes for the vents. However, little to no clean-up was done when work was done in the basement (other than to remove extraneous material). We cleaned up after they left each day and are still finding little screws in our basement over a month later. Folkes subcontracted out the electrical work and the electricians were knowledgable and quick. However, they did not clean up after themselves and we had wires and other miscellaneous bits all over our garage.

Appt went great. Gene was our technician and was prompt, courteous and very knowledgeable. Altho an old worn out part needed replacing, Gene explained thoroughly as to why he “Recommended” we replace said part (he didn’t shove it down our throats) making our decision easier to absorb the cost.I would highly recommend Gene at Folkes to anyone needing cooling and heating services or repairs. Per usual . . . arrived on time . . . performed all the required evaluation and adjustments . . . cleaned up everything . . . and was on his way. Part of my annual contract for the heating system, water heater, and AC that I have had for many, many years.

Everything went smoothly. Prompt and done timely. Explained the new heater and how to adjust temperature if desired. Very pleased.

Problem wasn't caught on the initial checkup and service, I made a call 2 days later for service and serviceman found the trouble on a second call made.Next visit, which was 3 days after first visit, serviceman found the problem, the circulator pump was bad. New pump installed and everything seems to be performing ok.

They were a sub-contractor for a contracting company we deal with, who we really trust with our contracting business. They're an excellent company. I would say what stands out to me is the workmanship, the quality of their work, and the installation was superb. It's just excellent service, excellent quality installation service. I would say It took about ten to twelve hours to complete the service, and two workers came out to do the job. I was very pleased with their service.

Technician arrived at the agreed time and, finished the job more quickly than I expected.

They are quite efficient and leave the work area clean.

Overall, they are quite efficient. The parts are expensive but other then that they are good and leave the area clean.

I like them compared to others and they have the right filters.

I think they are fairly prompt and show up on time.

Excellent, showed me what had to be replaced and then asked me if I wanted it done. Not pushy.

They sent a guy to do the service on the house and I was very unhappy with him. He sat in the car most of the time and hardly came in the house. So, when they called me about it two weeks later and asked me about how everything went and I didn't initiate a comment but when they called me I said I wasn't pleased then they sent somebody else out to redo it. They could have ignored it but the fact that they did a follow up call because I wasn't satisfied with the original was pretty good. I was pleased with it the second time round.

We have been experiencing a problem with our unit since this work was done. When we called to ask them to send someone to check on the problem they said they would come out for an additional fee of $138, and that would just be to diagnosis the problem. Cannot believe a company that did work for us and charged us over 1,000 would not check and make sure it is not something that went wrong after they worked on the unit. I say this because it was working fine up until then.

2 days later it stopped again. They said a flame sensor needed to be replaced. $575 later the furnace still stops. I just reset it but I need to find a service company that knows about oil furnaces and can adjust it so that I don't need to clean it every 3 months.

Tech was pleasant and thorough, but didn't fix problem. It was a very cold day and the house wasn't reaching the 66 degrees on thermostats. Only getting up to 62 at best. Tech checked everything, found hot water boiler and heating system were OK. Suggested we move curtains from the registers and close up an AC vent in the master bedroom. OK, but we've lived here 17 years and have had very cold stretches and the heating system was always able to keep up with the cold. Didn't understand that. Just had another cold spell and same thing happened. Upstairs didn't get above 61 and downstairs didn't get above 63 at night. I didn't have them come here, because I didn't want to spend another $85 to be told everything's fine. BTW, I did seal up the vent in the master bedroom and we moved the curtains off of the radiators. I did call a couple days after this second problem just to talk with someone on the phone who had more experience, but they never returned the call. Not a surprise. Woman who answered the phone sounded distracted. I didn't call back. Previously, I had a problem with the heating system making a banging noise. We've experienced this in the past and our previous heating contractors have fixed it. Folkes was very good about coming out twice to troubleshoot, but they didn't fix the problem. Because it's an intermittent issue, they weren't able to be there when it happened. Nevertheless, previous contractors were able to fix it. Again, they were very thorough, pleasant, and responsive. So, if you're considering them for basic heating system cleaning and parts replacement, they should be OK. Don't look for a lot of expertise to solve more complex issues. I have a contract with them, so I'll get the cleaning done. But, I'll be looking for someone else who may be more experienced.

After a $99 diagnostic where tech looked at one wire and disconnected and reconnected it, the unit again kicked off after he left. I called back and was told it had to be the control board and it would take several days to get. I was told over the phone the total repair would cost $783, which included Warranty parts for which would be reimbursed from Carrier and I would need to pay half of the total up front. Diagnostic was done 10/23/15 and tech came with parts to install 10/28/15, but could not give me breakdown of the bill. After several phone calls and emails directly to Dustin Folkes, the owner, I finally got a breakdown on November 10: $414 labor (over $300/hour for 1.5 hours of time), $30 for overnight shipping which took 2 days, warranty parts and tax on parts were $305 (to be reimbursed), balance was tax on labor. I followed up and pointed out that Folkes neglected to apply the 5% senior discount posted on Angies List. It is now 2016 and I have yet to receive Angies List 5% discount (about $25), nor have I received the $305 warranty reimbursement. Carrier Corp. advised they released the reimbursement on 12/4/15. Both Carrier Corp. and their distributor (RJ Murray) have contacted Folkes about passing this money on to me but several recent phone calls asking that Dustin Folkes contact me have been ignored. While the gas heater has been working properly, the total disregard of the folks at Folkes for basic customer service is abominable not to mention a big rip-off in service pricing. Why Carrier distributed the funds to the installer I do not know, but will follow up with them to try get reimbursed directly. At this point I doubt the check for the Angies List discount is in the mail.
