I called for an estimate and Barry came the next day. He gave a quote and I was called later that day with some options for when I could have the service completed. The woman who called was very nice, and was ready to work with my schedule. Barry and a coworker arrived at 7:45 (for a 7:30 appointment) and were very professional. The hood and vent are sparkling and the fan works better than it ever did before. Everything was perfectly cleaned up when they were done. Best of all, there's no more smell of old grease in the kitchen and it won't start a fire when I have to use it. It took almost exactly two hours. I would call them again for any service they provide. Price was reasonable compared to other estimates.
Description of Work: After moving into our house, we discovered that the kitchen range hood was so clogged with grease it would be a fire hazard to use it. Breathe With Ease cleaned the hood, fan, and vent to the outside. They also replaced a faulty flapper that was covering the outside vent (and had let birds nest inside) with screening.

I called around to several places before hiring Breathe With Ease. They were not the cheapest quote, but I was impressed with the detailed explanation of the work I got from Barry (head of the company, I think), and contrasting his approach with others who use in-duct vacuum hoses. Barry himself did the work, along with his assistant Doug. They arrived within the half-hour window I'd been told to expect them, and both worked like demons for about 10 hours, less a brief lunch break. Their work brought out a lot of detritus on the floors by the registers, and in the basement around the furnace -- all of which they cleaned up very thoroughly. Barry used mirror and flashlight to inspect the ducts and trunks as he worked. One thing I remember from my calls was that a competitor used remote cameras in the ducts, and I wondered about that -- but the low-tech approach seemed to do the job just as well. In fact, I got a look into one of the trunks after the register runs had been blown down into the trunk. The amount of dust, pet dander, and other debris I saw gathered there was rather frightening -- and that's not to mention the petrified mouse corpses they pulled out! (The ducts had not been cleaned in at least the 14 years I owned the house -- and maybe not in its entire 50-year lifetime.) They ran into a snag when we discovered that the builders had run the thermostat wiring loose through one of the trunks. Barry told me they couldn't use the spinning brush in that trunk because it would catch on the wire. (In fact, he had to leave behind a brush that had detached from the cable when this first happened.) We discussed alternatives. I speculated this might be residual wiring from an old humidistat, which we could clip and remove. He helped me pull both that and the thermostat from the wall, and we confirmed that the wires were indeed from the operational thermostat, so that option was out. I asked about running new wire. He explained that he wasn't certified for HVAC work -- and anyway, I suspect would have been a quite job given the finished basement ceilings. He did the best he could with blown air, and the trunk looked quite clean to me after that. Throughout, I found Barry and Doug to be knowledgeable, professional, diligent and courteous. The price was rather higher than I'd hoped, but conformed to his quote (I had under-counted registers in my estimate), and having seen the amount of labor involved, I don't think it was unreasonable. I would recommend Breathe With Ease to anyone considering duct cleaning.
Description of Work: Cleaned ductwork throughout house (2 stories + basement), from the 30 registers through the main trunks. They attached a huge wheel-in vacuum (with filtration) into the ducts at the furnace, then went into each register, vacuumed out the register opening, and sent in first a spinning brush on a long cable to loosen the debris, and then a long hose with dispersal air jets to blow air from a separate, large compressor from the registers down into the main trunks. Then they repeated this process through the trunk runs (using a reverse-oriented blower head to "pull" the debris back along the cable). They cut a few holes along the way to give them access, and patched them neatly with sheet metal and screws afterward. Both supply and air return networks were done, in that order. In the process, they moved aside furniture as needed to access the registers, and put it back when done. In one case, they advised me to empty a glass curio cabinet before it was moved; the rest they handled themselves. While they were prepping, I did go through the house and point out a couple of registers hidden in unlikely places (behind some junk in a walk-in closet); I recommend you do the same, to make sure nothing gets missed.
