Charles Stewart Roofing

I called yesterday and they came to my home this morning. I had a hard time finding someone to come to my home to unclog the gutters.I had been calling companies for a few weeks. Some said they would try to come but never showed up. Others said they were too busy. This company came the next day and did the job. Hopefully when it rains I will no longer have a waterfall on the side of my home.

I called this company initially following flooding in my basement and kitchen due to a blocked downspout trap that I cleaned myself after the heavy rains the last weekend of May. The rainstorm and blocked drain caused the gutter to overflow that leaked behind the cement coated bricks via a gap just below the gutter and the wall, which was primarily why I asked to see them, to cork all these gaps. I told him that I wanted all gaps surrounding the windows and all attachments of fire escape to the rear wall sealed. I also showed him how the downspout connects with both the patio drain and basement stair drain which then goes under the house to the street storm drain system. During excessive rainstorms, water overflows into the basement when there is too much volume for the drain pipe. While we were on the roof, he explained to me that the roofing granules needed coating to avoid losing them and blocking the gutter. There was a layer coating a portion of the gutter. He told me that the rear wall of the building needed waterproofing too. I asked him if he did exterior painting as well, which he said that he did, because the front lintels and cornice of my building needed to be painted as well. He gave me the following 3 estimates: 1- Roof: to coat the roof in order to fix the roofing granules and patch where necessary and clean the granules from gutter. $2000 2- Building rear wall: to apply a colored waterproof coating following the corking of the gap under the gutter, around the windows and at the wall connectors where the fire escape is attached to the rear wall. $5000 3- Building façade painted wood cornice and cast iron lintels: remove peeling paint, prep work for repainting, cornice and lintels. $5000 I accepted a $2000 roof estimate thinking that the work order stated patching the roof where needed, so I assumed they intended to cement the bubble in the cap-sheet. They said that the truck was downstairs with all the material ready to do the job, and gave me a 3 year warranty to start the job immediately. I was concerned about coating a roof that still had wet areas a day after a very heavy rain storm, but they said that their compressor would blow off the water, so I let them begin coating the roof. Before they began to work, I reminded them to block the downspout to keep roofing granules out of the drain pipe. About 20 minutes after they began to work I went to inspect thinking that they were still using the compressor to finish drying the pocket of water by the bubble. I was shocked to see that they had nearly completed spraying the entire roof with the aluminum coating and the bubble issue was not dealt with. After the job they said that it was not necessary to address the bubble. They finished the job in less than an hour. They told me that the compressor dried the roof and that I had a 3 year warranty. They said that they would be back with a color chart in several days to see about finishing the rear of the building. The power blowing of the roofing granules had scattered them everywhere on my patio and garden, including my neighbor?s particularly manicured patio and gardens. So I do not know how much granular material finally went down the patio and stairwell drains. I am still finding granules everywhere. Fortunately, I reminded them to block the downspout drain, because they did not block the drains in the patio or basement stairwell. I broke my own rule by not doing my homework which should have included writing my own contract that would have included full details of all the repairs needed before coating the roof, names of supplies and materials, as well as time needed to execute the job with prices for supplies and materials. I also should have talked with my insurance company for their requirements for tradesmen working on a roof. I should have especially read the manufacture?s recommendation for coating a flat roof after heavy rain before I let them begin to work. The manufacturer recommends 24 to 48 hours, if surface is fully dry. I waited for them to return with the color chart to talk about the bubble situation and the strewn granules. I explained that I was not happy. A third member of the clan came to see me, and I went over the whole scenario again with him climbing up the fire escape to give him a complete picture of the work. After I explained that I wanted a detailed written proposal for the rear waterproofing and front painting, I was astounded when he said that the original estimate for those jobs would be roughly double what I had initially been told. Then he tried that same suave sales pitch trick of asking me if they should begin this same week. I told him absolutely not, because I want the details clearly written, but still have not received. As I contemplated all this and waiting for the detailed estimate, I saw Angie?s list emailed to me for roof coating deals for flat roof aluminum coating of 1000ft² for $399 by a member of his clan. My roof is 1200ft², so I knew that this 72 year old had been duped and overcharged which I actually felt after they finished the job in less than an hour. I have also been up to the roof recently to inspect, and still had to clean roofing granules out of the gutter, so in their haste they did not even properly seal the surface. I made the big mistake of letting a suave sales pressure trick induce me into allowing a contractor I did not know begin to work immediately, and not doing my homework. Relying on grades given by others is not a smart way to work with contractors.. Nobody should make such an error unless there is an emergency situation to deal with. Don?t make the same mistake as I did, and against my better judgment, because I am a retired skilled tradesman. Common sense told me that a compressor will not eliminate all the water molecules of such a surface in a short time. If they try to convince you otherwise, just let them blow their hot air into their bagpipes, because they did not adhere to the manufacturer?s recommendations.

The job went well, caulking was a little sloppy, from on roof it looked good, but from inside was noticeable, once brought to roofers attention they had no problem re doing it to my satisfaction with out any problem or complaints, just apoligies

The company was prompt and amiable. They did their work efficiently and well. I felt that they were not interested in selling me unnecessary services. They were direct and effective. I would hire them again.

I bought an Angie's 199 dollars deal for them to evaluate and caulk a couple areas. My skylight was leaking and I knew I would have to redo the roof at some point. I wasn't expecting to spend the 6000 dollars right away, hence buying the 200 dollars deal. but they made the case that it had to be done and sort of scared me into doing it that same day. I didn't do a review right away because I wanted to see how the roof held up during the snow. They did the job and was professional. My main complaint: spring came and a lot of pollen and tree stuff has been finding its way in the roof hatch. All my family have spring allergies. I called them and Mr, Stuart returned my call and said he could be the by 2pm, I told him I was at work and couldn't get there by that time but can he come after six or on the weekend. He said he didn't understand what I was speaking about so I sent him photos of the amount of pollen that was coming in everyday. I feel they made a half hearted attempt by again calling me during works hours and asking to come address the problem. Like this guy didn't get it that between 9 and 5 people are at work and he couldn't call lady minute and expect me to be able to leave work. I have a piece of plastic covering my roof hatch so My family can come home in the evening and not have pollen floating all around the hours.and not be up all night. I'll try to find someone to come fix the hatch door. Also when they were spraying the roof, they sprayed my BBQ cover and I had to clean rubber from my hardwood floor.

No issues. Installation was professionally done.

The skylight in our foyer leaked when it would rain heavily. I purchased a coupon in the amount of $99 for skylight resealing and a flat roof inspection. The roofing company came on time and worked in a timely manner. We were very satisfied with the completed work.

Went as expected. Provided quote for future work. Would consider

Two crews were involved in the delivery of services. Roof crew was excellent, efficient and clean. Masonary/Chimney crew was adequate but not as thorough. Needed to be shown gaps in their delivery plus had one member of this team who had demonstrated deceptive tendencies. Specifically hidding used tools in client's recycle bins instead of proper removal. Charles Stewart did apologize and re-mediate upon notification.

The roofer played his game, well I have the crew here and the ladder is already up, so he went down from $ 7,500 ($6,500 + $1,000 shingles) down to $ 5,000. He then left went around the corner and called me that he would do for $ 4,500. I felt like I was on a tv gameshow. Needless to say I turned him down, as he is all about the money, and for the price he wanted I could go elsewhere and get the entire roof ripped off, replace rotted wood and new roof, gutters, etc for $7,500

He wasn't very good though. He told me the roof was in good condition and he did what he had to do regarding putting some silicon around where he felt we had leaks. I imagined this aluminum coating would be a lot thicker than the one he sprayed on and he overcharged me and in part it was my fault. He did the job we paid for. The over pricing of the additional pricing was not to my liking. He was on time and had good salesmanship.

He was very conscientious of all the particulars the project involved. He took great care to get the job done to my specifications.

Rep showed timely and provided much detail on the service provided. I initially had the deal for roof repair and inspection. But after the inspection (with pictures), the Rep did find issues with the roof that were not covered by deal. I opted to repair the roof for an additional fee. The repairs were done quickly. A few weeks later, I had a small leak and a Rep came out as soon as possible to repair. So far so good...No complaints here.

Mr. Stewart and his crew were very professional....on time...returned calls quickly....were respectful and tried to answer all my questions. cleaned up all the old gutters and roof..worked very hard and quickly..made sure my yard was clean. I would use hi s company again.....

after an initial roof inspection it turned out that my brick chimney was staring to fall apart and needed to be wrapped. I blame it on the rough winter and my 115 year old chimney. They were knowledgeable, professional and pleasant to work with. We were worried about a few other things - like a few dips - on our roof but they let us know that it wasn't really a big deal and we avoided a large expense.

great inspection and great information provided. this was one of the last warm days before the hellish winter of 2015.. learned that my main roof on the 4th floor of the home may need to be resealed soon - possibly resealed in the last 10 years - many options provided - learned that the lower roofs had not been resealed in 25-30 years - options discussed and a 8,500$ price point for the three roofs was discussed. I decided to go in another direction due ONLY to the fact that I need to remedy a small roof and flashing underneath an existing deck structure - since the aforementioned company does not do anything but Roofing - they said that once I remove the deck they would do the 3 roof jobs. Would definitely explore the job once I am ready to take the plunge! They know their stuff! They work hard and they will work fast!

Very professional. Was friendly, returned my call and even updated me on time of arrival to evaluate cause of leak. Gave me a cost and did the work immediately on the spot. Would use again.

I called them several times after placed the order but couldn't find anyone, left a message, someone called back saying would come to take a look on Saturday. But no one showed up on that Saturday. I called them again. They said too busy, couldn't make it, would come on Monday. No one showed up on that Monday either. Eventually they came, and did a quick check-up, offered some work that I don't fully understand but charged $3500. It turned out to be completely a rip-off for the amount work they did and the $3500 I paid!!! They left some unfinished work and asked my contractor to do them a favor to finish it. They take the money but ask other people who don't know them at all to do the work left. Just like that! Will never use any offers from Angie's List. I don't trust internet promotion for this matter. A local new paper and neighbor's recommendation are much more reliable than internet. Now I believe those negative reviews to this provider are true. I regret that I didn't take those negative reviews seriously at that time.

Mr Charles was friendly and arrived at my home as planned. He got his crew to start working right away, it took several hours to complete. Last September I had the the roof and skylight replaced by another non Angie list contractor and I thought my worries were over but, leaking water came in near the skylight and water was leaking behind the old gutter, leaving a nice layer of ice on the entire rear of my house. I paid 6 grand for that work. So far I haven't has any issues with the work done by Mr Charles employees and I'll likely use him again. My only con, I wasn't agog with the cost, but I needed it done and agreed. Note; I didn't get any other estimates.

A truly OUTSTANDING experience!!!! I called the office late Tuesday night expecting to leave a message on their voice mail. Much to my surprise (and joy), the boss picked up and took my information. They came the next day as promised and after discussing the problems, potential solutions and then agreeing on a plan, they started working right away. The workers were quick, efficient and clean. The guys were also courteous, well mannered and spoke to me in a language that made it easy to understand. Also impressive was the fact that they went up on my roof and took pictures so that I could see exactly what the issues were! This made it easier for me to understand the problems and therefore make a more intelligent decision. The "after" pictures confirmed that the work was done! I recommend Charles Stewart Roofing highly and without reservation (I have already sung their praises to friends who are considering roof work). They are honest, hard working and really, really seem to care about you, the customer, as well as the integrity of their work. Mr Steward was prompt, and professional. Very Pleasant to work with. Took pictures of the roof and told me exactly what was needed and got the job done in no time. He could have told me to replace the roof, and I probably would have, but as an honest man said he could repair it and it will be good for a few more years. Will I use him again? without question.

They showed up on time and checked my roof for any damage. They also repaired a leader and cleaned a gutter that was full of leaves. Did not try to push unnecessary services on me and was very professional.

They installed the gutter leader in the wrong area. It was installed with one screw facing the front of the house. The water was draining in the driveway and it turned into ice. I couldn't use the driveway for 2 months because of the ice. A couple of times I had to chop the ice out. He promised me after the weather broke, he would send a guy right out. As soon as it did, I called him and he told me he would have someone out within the hour and that was a month ago. He did really good work with the exception of this. If he comes to fix it and apologizes, I would use him again. After calling and getting his voicemail for a day he called very apologetic and willing to fix the issue. He stated he could make it to my house by that following Saturday, but actually called a few days before that while he was in the neighborhood stopped by and in 5-10 minutes fixed the issue. The owner sent his son-in-law to fix the issue who also has his own roofing company Bill White Roofing and he did an great with the repair issues.

it went excellent. I purchased the deal. And received call from Charles Stewart Roofing on same day. They came by after call, and completed all work the very next day.

Charles Stewart Company came to see the skylight in my condo. It was previously fixed by another contractor, but was leaking again. They found the main issue around the window frame areas and gave a quick fix with tart although they were not sure how much that would help. Since the skylight is old, they fold me the options were to replace it with another one or cement it out. They also gave me the estimates of price ranges. They gave me the credit back to the coupon I purchased since they saw that the skylight was initially fixed thoroughly and they really did not have that much to do as originally described as their job in the coupon. It has been five months after their quick fix and there is no leaking so far. I appreciate their coming over during a rainy day to check out the issue and giving a quick fix and assessments!
