Charles McCarthy of Certified Chimney created a FIRE HAZARD and caused water damage! I hired them to simply install a new chimney chase cover and cap. The entire job was botched from beginning to end. The measurements for the chase cover were done so sloppy. The hole in the cover which the flue goes through was at least 6-8 inches too big. There should only be about an inch of play if measured properly. They also didn’t have a collar welded to the hole which is completely unheard of and bizarre. So what eventually happened a couple weeks later is water backtracking on the chase cover and simply going down the hole, into our fireplace causing all sorts of damage. It also tripped our circuit breaker because the water mixed with the electronics of the fireplace blower, causing a fire hazard. When we called for an emergency repair, we were told that we would have to wait 5 days because he is not in our area. Meanwhile we had water continuing to fall into our fireplace. Apparently this guy works all over the place, from Suffolk County to Pennsylvania. So if you have a problem or emergency from their shoddy work and they aren’t in your area, don’t expect a response anytime soon. We eventually had to call a different company to diagnose the problem and install a tarp to stop the water until we could get the job completely redone by someone competent. In addition to the problems stated above, we were shown with photos that the storm collar placed around the flue was not the correct size and was not caulked. Then we find out he installed the wrong size Weathershield chimney cap! We have an 8 inch flue, double wall air cooled chimney. The cap is supposed to go INSIDE the inner pipe (flue). So instead of installing an 8 inch chimney cap, he installed a 12 inch which went over the inner and outer pipe, inhibiting the chimney from being able to properly cool. We were told by several companies who gave us estimates that this was a major FIRE HAZARD! I don’t care how many years he is in business, he should be out of business. He either doesn’t know what he’s doing or doesn’t care about the job he does. I can only imagine how many people think they got a proper job by this company and don’t realize the shoddy work they likely performed because most areas of your chimney are visually inaccessible to the average homeowner. Avoid this company at all cost.

This was a switch and bait. Trying to take advantage of a single woman.
Description of Work: I called and asked price for having chimney cleaned. Was told $80.00. When he got to house after changing when he was coming he told me I needed a new chimney, my chimney was too dangerous and could fall down. I knew this was not true as my oil company had come to see fix a problem I had and said the last thing that needed to be done was the the chimney needed to be cleaned nothing else.
