Description of Work: They cleaned a wood-burning chimney and did a limited, visual inspection of the interior of the chimney. They said that, based on their limited inspection, the interior of the chimney needed repairs and they gave me a proposal to do the repair work with a foam type product at a cost of $3,300. I called another chimney repair business and they said that the inspection was not appropriate since a camera should have been used to inspect the entire chimney. They also said that the cost of the product they proposed to do the repair was significantly less than they quoted. Overall, I was not pleased with the service I received.

They behaved in a very professional manner. They got right down to the job. They cleaned up well. Explained what they found and the reasons they thought it might need follow up.

Our experience with Central Masonry and Chimney was very bad. They did not clean the mortar off the brick, and the cap/crown was full of pits and not smooth at all (so that the water can run off). They did not reattach the flashing at all, and did not report to us that it was left loose. According to a later, second-party inspection and evaluation by a Professional Engineer, Central did a poor job cutting the tile which lines the inside the chimney ? resulting in a significant gap in the chimney lining, which is a potential safety issue. Upon their second cleaning and inspection, they apparently tried to charge us of $2893 for repairs which were either not necessary or caused by their own faulty workmanship. And they left considerable soot which was later identified as a safety hazard. In summary, I consider that they did an unsatisfactory, unsafe and irresponsible job, and largely refuse to rectify the poor quality of their work.
Description of Work: They rebuilt the top 21 courses of brick on our chimney, replaced the crown, and replaced liner tiles as needed. Their cost estimate was more than twice that of another mason, but we went with Central because we figured they were chimney specialists and would do a first class job. They did not clean the mortar off the brick, and the cap/crown was full of pits and not smooth at all (so that the water can run off). They did not reattach the flashing at all, and did not report to us that it was left loose. According to a later, second-party inspection and a report by a Professional Engineer, Central did a poor job cutting the tile which lines the inside the chimney – resulting in a significant gap in the chimney lining, which is a potential safety issue. A year after rebuilding the chimney, Central also did another cleaning and chimney inspection. Central reported that our chimney had cracks in the liner, was unsafe to use, and would cost $2893 to repair. A subsequent evaluation by a Professional Engineer (see above), indicated that there were no cracks, and the gap had been caused by Central’s poor workmanship in cutting the tile liner. Also, the second cleaning by another company (as provided by the Professional Engineer) removed about 4 cups of soot which reportedly should have been removed by Central -another safety issue. When we reported the above problems to Central, they were not responsive. After I first reported the problems to them, they did not answer the phone or return calls – until I called them on my cell phone. After much ado, they finally sent someone to paint a substance on the cap/crown. They do not plan to resolve any of the other problems. I had to hire another contractor to fix the flashing.

Response from Central Masonry and Chimney Inc
What the customer failed to tell you is the home was hit by a large tree on the roof next to the chimney creating massive damage from hurricane Irene. In 2010 we did a partial rebuild above the roof line. We believed the customer was satisfied as they paid and had no complaints. In 2011 the called us to do an inspection on the chimney due to the tree hitting the house right next to the chimney and coming through the roof. The chimney was dirty with creosote so we could not view the video inspection. We then cleaned the chimney and proceeded to video inspect the chimney. The customer watched the process. We found cracks on the interior of the chimney well below the area in which we did the previous repair. The customer forwarded the estimated repair to their insurance company. We corresponded with the insurance company on 2 occasions and they were adamantly not going to pay for this repair. The insurance company sent out their engineer and stated that the flashing was faulty, which was not part of any of the work that we did. The lining was damaged in the center of the chimney and the customer saw this on the video inspection. The damaged tile was not an area that we worked on either, as per our original work order/job scope states. The customer then complained about the roughness of the crown, so we sent a crew out to resurface the crown, as this was an area we worked on as stated in the original work order/job scope, Customer satisfaction is extremely important to us on work that we have performed, and we will go out of our way to make the customer happy. However, we are not willing to repair work that we didn’t perform, or that was not part of our original work order/job scope.

The company was responsive and professional throughout. They sent someone to give an estimate the day after we phoned them. They communicated about when the work would begin and how long it would take. The estimator was very professional and friendly. The workers came on two separate days and left no debris around the house. We really appreciated their completing the job promptly before it became too cold to do the work. They even worked the Saturday after Thanksgiving! The price may have been a little higher than we would have had to pay someone else, but it was worth every penny to have a no-hassle, smooth experience.
Description of Work: Replaced/rebuilt one chimney and re-pointed and re-crowned another.
