Victorian Builders took on the task during our vacation, so we would not be bothered by the work around (and in!) the house. Turned out, the house (a modular) was not bolted together correctly (of at all), poorly insulated and haphazardly finished. They opened up the drywall, worked in the attic and basement, and several of the bedrooms. When we came back, it was as if they had not been there, it was cleaned up so well. They even found matching paint and repainted the walls where needed. Since VB worked on the house, we've already saved on our heating bill. Eventually, this job will pay itself!
Description of Work: Victorian Builders came in to fix the source of some re-occuring cracks in the walls of our home, as well as install insulation in the attic and water proof the basement.

The entire project took many months, during which we were only rarely there. The contractors were utterly trustworthy, work was steady and efficient, supervision of subcontractors was excellent, consultations were regular and diplomatic, and every aspect of the work was top-notch. Notable was the quality of the finish-work-- historically correct beadwork and moldings, etc. had to be fitted with extreme care on a house built in many stages over the 19th century, on various sorts of foundations and support systems. The final work was impressive; the punch sheet at the end was less than a page-- that is to say, there was almost nothing that did not deeply satisfy us. While Victorian is not inexpensive, the premium in this case was more than worth it for the absolute assurance we had that the work was being done correctly and well and teh peace of mind that was ensured. When small disasters struck-- blizzards, a near-hurricane, etc.-- Brian and his crew were there quickly and efficiently to make sure all was set to rights. Victorian is a full-on contractor-- they have a cabinetry shop, for example, and electricians, woodworkers, designers, painters, and so forth, so only a small portion is subcontracted. This adds considerably both to the efficiency and predictability of the work, and to the quality of the outcome.
Description of Work: This was an extremely extensive remodeling of a c. 1800 farmhouse and conversion of the rear of an early-20th century dairy barn into two fully heated and insulated studios. In the main house, flooring had to be replaced with historically accurate mixed-size wideboards, footings and some supports replaced, removal of old wainscoting and replastering, insulation of crawl space, etc. In addition, the house had no working kitchen and so an entire kitchen had to be carved from a shed-tackroom. In the barn, the original concrete and dirt flooring had to be removed and/or prepped, then a new insulated floor poured; walls erected, ceiling constructed around original support beams, conversion of fixed old 4-pane windows into angled-in and removable utility, storms added, prpane heating, and all detail work to conform to the original barnlike feel. In addition a new metal roof was added, with insulation underneath.
