"Fanny Landscaping Inc. had reached out to me after I had started a search on Angi's List for someone to install a patio. I started the process in early/mid-September to have someone work on the project of completing/performing a patio Install. Alex(Fanny Landscaping Inc.) had first contacted me over the phone to get the basic details of what I was looking to accomplish and was quoted $2,500 to complete the job. After coming to my home to see the job and getting a full understating of what was required the quote was increased to $2,950 as additional material(Item 4, Sand, "Polly Sand") was still required before bringing Fanny Landscaping on board I had the patio hole dug to the area by 8-9 inches deep and previously installed and tamped ~1-2 inches of Item 4. While Alex was on site I explained the main purpose for this patio was to put in a hot tub/spa and to be able to use it as a patio. Within a week or 2, the work was started and completed quickly. It looked good upon completion and shortly after had my hot tub delivered and installed. Due to the cold weather I had not used my patio very often and had not noticed any issues with the patio itself until February 24, 2025 I had another project started and noticed the patio tiles were skewed. I then took a closer look and noticed that all tiles around the hot tub were no longer level nor were any of the tiles along my house. I immediately took pictures and sent them to Fanny Landscaping. I was called by a representative to schedule a time for Alex to come and take a look the next day. Alex had shown up on time and looked at the tiles. I asked him what needed to be done to fix the issue at hand. He told me that the tiles against the house because I have a new construction home will always sink, and even if he were to fix it, they would sink again. I was also told that because sand was used instead of concrete a hot tub would also "sink." When I asked why he didn't tell me that when I had it installed, he said that I never told him I was planning to put a hot tub on the patio and that he only installed the patio to my instructions. I tried telling him that I had told him about the hot tub on day 1, but he insisted he did not know that and that a concrete pad would be needed to fix the issue under the hot tub. I then again inquired what about next to the house and he again insisted that they would sink again. I had asked what he would charge to fix the issue, he had taken some measurements and left. A few days later I still have not heard back. Many tiles move when stepped on and due to their make are sharp and I couldn't see walking safely along the edge without breaking a tile or potentially cutting a foot if stepped on incorrectly."

Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.
No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
