Estimate was ridiculous. Do your research, people. Also, the other F reviews are spot on. Took FOREVER to get an estimate that turned out to be RIDICULOUS. Also just as ridiculous was the estimate given by someone he recommended for a very simple flooring job. We did our homework and got other estimates, and we read reviews of others that had similar work done and reviews that mentioned what that work cost. We've also called other handymen/contractors and followed up on some references. Bottom line, get estimates from other well-rated people first, and read reviews regarding how much money jobs like the ones you need actually cost on average.

I always knew from a young boy growing up in Wisconsin that I loved to work with my hands. My grandfather worked for himself as a contractor. I knew I wouldn't get rich but helping others and an honest day's wage for an honest day's work was how I was raised. To address this issue I went out on my Saturday and spent 1 1/2 hrs listening to these concerns. I told them to give me 1 week to get back with them which they agreed to and I did .This homeowner just listed their home and had had this leak at their skylight for the whole duration they had lived in the home, I believe to be over 10 years. I looked at the skylight, to take all the flashing off, reflash with asphalt fabric and cement, and put all the cladding back on. The homeowner had tried to repair the skylight previously but was unsuccessful. My fee for that was $225 with materials which I have been charging the same for over 10 years. I also took him on the roof showed him his chimney which was behind the skylight which could be a potential for another leak and proposed $350 to repair that the same. As for the deck the railings were 10 6ft. sections which were wood, they were falling apart so I proposed to remove the railings put on a new vinyl deck railing system. That labor came to $775 and the materials I quoted him around $1200. I also told him that whatever the materials came to I would just charge him accordingly. Part of our cost for repairs is that we take on the responsibility for a 10-year-old leak. I received an email back from the homeowner calling me names and telling me to F off. I thought this was hateful and unwarranted and I'm sorry but the Internet has provided a way for people to act this way without any recourse. Please look at the other reviews that I have done work for people and you will not find any discrepancies in my billing practices. Look forward to working with those Angie's List Customers again that are REASONABLE and fun. Thank you

As always, a professional, pleasant experience from start to finish. Doug, Malachai, Jaren and occasional helpers quickly ordered our materials after a thorough consultation on colors and finishes, were here to receive and approve those materials, and quickly begin work on our front porch, so they could get our home sided before the snow flew. The front porch deck came together beautifully. We appreciated the recommendation on the tongue-in-groove boards. The siding project also went very smoothly. Our home has many details and Doug carefully measured and bent every piece of aluminum flashing precisely. We loved the extra touches of scallops on the front and back peaks of the house. Weather interrupted our projects, so when we were able in the spring, Doug scheduled his return with our railings already painted and partially assembled. The finished look was exactly as expected even though he had to adjust the railings to fit our porch. Doug is very flexible working around our schedule, and we had him back last week to finish our back porch deck and railings. Doug has such pride in his work, and pays very close attention to details, as well as our budget, we are always happy to work on our home projects with him and his family.
Description of Work: Our early 1900's house needed siding, painting, rebuilding the front and back porch as well as assembling and installing new wood spindles and railings.

We've used Doug for a number of projects over the last two years. He quickly returns calls, does quality work, and makes every effort to keep costs down. The insulation repair was especially impressive because it might have been very expensive (ripping up siding) to track down, but Doug was able to fix things properly without any major demo. I definitely plan to continue using Doug in the future.
Description of Work: * Bathroom remodel, and subfloor repair. New floor installed, new exhaust fan, vanity update, painting and cleaning. * Painting * Misc electrical and plumbing repairs * Found and fixed an unusual insulation problem in an exterior wall that was causing condensation and ice build up in an interior closet. This was *very* difficult to diagnose, and Doug found it quickly.

Highly recommend, excellent job! My very old milk house needed a whole new roof and rafters. After one person did not show up and another person gave me a very high estimate, I called Schultz and Sons Contracting. Doug came over looked at the roof, we talked about all the work involved and he gave me an estimate that was very reasonable. Doug and his two sons were very professional and courteous. They got right to work and worked until early evening. They had the roof done within three days. I couldn?t be happier!!

So far so good! We have had many heavy rainfalls with no further leaking. Doug assured us he would stick with us until the leak was stopped. We will definitely contact Doug in the future with other projects/needs.
Description of Work: Our roof leaked despite efforts by several others to repair it. Doug got on the roof and took pictures then came up with a very logical plan on where and how to stop the leak. He worked with his sons. They were all very professional and courteous and most importantly: knowledgable.

Doug Schultz was recommended to us by our chimney mason. We started discussions with Doug to remodel one of our upstairs bathrooms. As we were in ongoing discussions and negotiations with him, playing phone tag from time to time, and having him visit on a couple of evenings when his day-work was finished, we realized we had been suffering massive ice dam build-up that broke open on Feb 22, 2015. Doug coached and counseled me through much of the insurance process and re-worked his schedule in order to provide nearly 20k worth of work over the course of approximately 3 months. I did a lot of the demolition work myself to save some money. He visited our place on several occasions during the prep phase to get a feel for what my wife and I were looking to accomplish. Then he prepared detailed estimates as required by the insurance company. Doug was instrumental in helping the insurance adjustor understand the full scope of the damages. The adjustor low-balled his first offer, and Doug spent several hours of his own time to better explain the problems to the insurance company. They took his advice and their second settlement was much more reasonable to the damages. Once the work began, Doug would start each day around 9 in the morning, unless he needed to get materials on his way in. He worked each day to between 4 and 6 pm, depending on his personal needs of the day. He is a one-man show, with only his two sons making appearances at regular intervals. He is constantly triaging his flow of requests for outside estimates from other potential customers in between my constant requests for updates and advice on tile, colors, and equipment upgrades as we entered into what became an unscheduled full-on remodel of 75% of the second floor. He also has children of his own to raise. I mention that as it needs to be remembered that he does it all himself: payroll, scheduling, labor, customer service, etc etc. He endured two personal emergencies of his own during the course of his time with me and he kept me updated throughout both of those situations so I knew when to expect him back. He handled his personal matters quickly and got back to work within a day or two of each emergency. Doug has a great eye for detail. He takes great pride in his bathroom tile work and my wife was extremely pleased with the results. He is polite, too, and perhaps overly so as he and I wound up discussing events of our lives in addition to his reasoned explanations of what needed to be done and in what order. He speaks slowly and measures his words carefully, looking to make sure I understood the logistics behind each project and the costs involved. I never felt like he was frustrated with me. He always took the time to explain whatever it was I had questions about. That meant a lot to me as I'm blind as a bat when it comes to home ownership stuff. During the past three months, Doug became something of a "home ownership mentor" to me as he spent so much time explaining everything to me. He also kept a detailed work log of his time accomplishing off-site tasks like a trip to the dump or a big-box home store. When it came time to pay him, he got out his log and had it ready for inspection and went down the invoice line by line so I knew what I was paying for. He was patient with me and my wife as we repeatedly went out to a big box store late at night to evaluate tile, vanity options, plumbing options, tub and surrounds, etc etc. It was a lot of work to deal with my incessant text messages, I'm sure. Yet he remained patient through it all and provided advice upon request. Looking back at the last three months, I think my only complaint would really be just a reflection of his style of business: the time it took to accomplish anything. A man of his quality takes time to do it right, and he works by himself on most days, (sons helping a couple days a week). I could have hired a big-name company that advertises on the radio or TV and had my work accomplished in half the time. But I would have had to have paid more money for that service, probably a lot more money. And, I would not have been given the nearly 24-hour access I had to my contractor to ask a whole host of questions. I asked a million of them. I even needed to text him at midnight once when something was urgent! Plus, he was willing to teach me along the way and for that, I was more than willing to be patient and have the work flow as it naturally occurred. I knew Doug was hard at work each day and we saw fruits of that on a daily basis when we took a look in the rooms he was in. All in all, I was very pleased with the work, I was very pleased with what I got for the money I paid, and I would recommend him to anyone who is willing to have an extra dose of patience in exchange for a patient, hard working, and honest contractor. Bottom line: to have success with Doug is to understand a basic premise...you are entering into a relationship, not simply signing a contract. Keep that in mind, and you'll do fine. His work is worth the wait.

Short review. Can't tell you how it went, Never got past a "don't bother me" e-mail.
Description of Work: He responded to my e-mail within a week, but his response was unexpected. It was as if he had absolutely no interest in helping me with my request. His exact words: We're backed up quite a bit with ice damming issues. That is all he said in his email. I get Rochester homeowners have suffered quite a bit of damage from this winter. I've scheduled gutter replacements and have contracted for a replacement asphalt driveway due to the ice damage. Guess what, both those contractors are busy too. But they demonstrated an interest. You didn't. I'm sorry to have bothered you. Hope you get caught up with your ice damage issues.

I read a review about this happening to someone else and hoped it would be different with me. He is very nice but not very good at following up. It was quite a challenge to add new tile to old existing tile and make it look like it all belonged together. With Doug's patience, it turned out wonderfully! Doug professionally evaluated my description of my roof leak scenario over the phone and before coming out made several good recommendations with respect to ways to make the most effective repair. Being a small job and a distance from Rochester (Honeoye), I had to wait for a convenient time for Doug in his schedule. But on the agreed upon day, he arrived on time with all the necessary parts to complete the job. The repair work was job professionally and efficiently. The leak has been corrected and should hold for a long time. Doug communicated well and was professional, honest, and fairly priced. I would definitely use him again.

Repaired the window sills but did not set windows in place , large gap was left. Storm windows were installed inside out and upside down. Worst of all, Doug cut our speaker wires on our deck and tossed them away. He said he thought they were dead cable wires. Never bothered to ask us. We now have to open up a family room wall to run new wiring out to the deck.

In all fairness window sills were so rotted that windows needed to be replaced. The homeowner was just trying to buy some time untill she could replace the windows. We custom bent in our brake sills that would stop the water from penetrating the walls. She continually communicated to me that everything looked fine. As for the storm windows it was a very simple mistake and fix that the homeowners laughed about. I went back the next day and reinstalled.. I offered to repair the speaker wires but they refused my offer so I reimbursed them 250.00 to run new wire 10 ft. Her husband and herself felt that was fair. Sometimes its impossible to please everyone. We just do our best and remain fair with everyone. The rest of my reviews speak for themselves.

Excellent all around. Doug responded to my initial query in a timely manner. We discussed several options for replacing the drafty pocket door that had fallen into disrepair. Once we settled on a direction he was very up front with letting me know when he could get to the job. The work was completed in less than two working days. Throughout the process Doug kept me informed of hurdles and overall progress. Doug was nice enough to swap out the door I had originally purchased in error for the correct one. The end result is a door that looks and functions worlds better than what I had previously. I'm very satisfied with the workmanship. I would certainly recommend Doug to anyone looking for a tricky, custom job such as mine. The door replacement was not an easy one, but it was completed well and timely. Doug had excellent communication, gave fair estimates and final price, and was friendly throughout the process.

He was courteous, helpful and very flexible adjusting to small changes I had made. I felt that he was very fair in pricing his services.
