My story: My well stopped providing water (it was a dry summer). I turned off power to the pump and called around; Automatic Utilities was willing to come the same day. The workman arrived; we uncovered the wellhead, and he told me to go turn on the pump. I had to walk indoors and down the cellar stairs to do so. When I came back up, I could hear the pump motor. He said, "You have to replace the pump. It's sucking air, that burns it out." I said, "Why didn't you tell me to turn it on for just a moment so you could listen to it, and then turn it off before it was hurt?" No answer. He wanted me to pay almost $1,000 to replace the pump. I refused and hired another company. No way was I going to let him kill my pump and then hire his company to replace it! My best friend's story: She has been plagued by very high heating bills, despite adding wall insulation and attic insulation and replacing her windows. I suggested she put in a condensing boiler (I'm an energy analyst). When the workmen came to put in the new system, they found two problems with her existing system a) the pumps were installed backwards, and b) there was NO WATER in the system. No wonder her fuel bills were so high! She has been calling (and paying) Automatic Utilities for years, hundreds of dollars worth of service calls, trying to figure out why her house is cold and her pipes keep freezing despite high fuel bills. Now she knows the answer. These people are either incompetent or crooks. I say, don't hire them!
