Very well. Tom is more or less retired. He is a Clock Builder and used to teach clock building. He loves his work. He is really doing this work part time and works by appointment only. My clock was a little different from most - I knew that going in because I had researched this clock on line and it is not one of the common versions. Tom had to experiment a little so I know he spent more time on this than he normally would have however he charged what he said he would. He told me that it would take some time but I was not in a rush - he had the clock for maybe a week. He loves to explain things and I am the kind of person who has time for this. If you are a "hurry up and fix my clock and don't waste my time talking to me" kind of person then go somewhere else. I say this both for you and for Tom. I will certainly give him the other clock I have than needs service. I will enjoy having him tell me all about it when it's done. He is a treasure.
Description of Work: I needed to have a 400 day "anniversary" clock repaired. The suspension wire broke during a move.

The clock stopped working. I know a little about antique clock works but I couldn't find the problem. It had previously been overhauled by another clock person only five years earlier (oiled etc.). I took the clock to Tom and he not only fixed the presenting problem but improved its overall condition. Everything is tighter, it keeps better time and now chimes precisely when it should (it hadn't for years). Clock repair requires experience and knowledge. Tom has been doing this for over 50 years which says it all about experience. As far as knowledge goes, he can give you information about any brand or style of mechanical clock. He's fun to just talk to because he knows so much detail. One last thing... He fixes cuckoo clocks. I don't just say that in case you happen to need one fixed. I mention it because they are the hardest mechanical clock to understand and repair. They have many, many moving parts that collectively have to work in a precise way. He showed me one that not only has a cuckoo but also has revolving men with one actually chopping wood when the cuckoo goes off. He fixed it... which says it all.
Description of Work: Tom repaired an antique Grandfather (Long Case) clock at a cost that was less then it likely would have cost elsewhere. This clock has been in my family for 100 years so it's important to me.

I called Tom from the info provided on Angie's list and we set a time for me to deliver it. (He meets clients by appointment, but seems to have a lot of availability.) He examined the "patient" and told me it should be ready by the next week. It was, at the cost he had quoted, which was less than half of what I had paid in the past to a local clock-maker. It needed to be taken apart and cleaned and unwound--I had wound it too tightly. He is well organized, gives good directions, is readily available by phone, and perhaps best of all, he clearly loves clocks! I will use him again to clean my clock regularly and I would recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: He cleaned and repaired my 50-year-old Trend Schoolhouse clock, which had simply stopped working. He took only a week to do it and charged me exactly what he had quoted--which was far less than I had paid another clock expert. The clock is working beautifully and Tom is a pleasure to deal with.

Description of Work: After having this clock hanging on my wall for ten years without working |I found out about Tom's Clock Repair ( Owner Tom Scalzo retired ) thru Angies List. Took to the clock to him which is about a half hour drive from where I live. I dropped the clock off at about 7:30 Pm on Friday and was contacted by Tom thru answering machine on Monday at about 9:30 Am stating the clock was repaired and ready for pick up. Tom is a true Craftsman in the clock repair business. Having owned his own business in NYC for many years before retirement.I was told when I dropped it off how much it would cost for repair and was not charged anything above the quoted price. I had previously ( the week before) taken another wall clock |a Seth Thomas well over 75 Years old to him with a broken main spring to him for repair and was quoted $85.00. When I picked the clock up after having it for only three days I was showed the old part as well as the new one.Was given instructions on how to wind the clock and take care of it. Have brought it home and it has hung on the wall since then running better than it ever has . I gave Tom $100.00 for repair and it was worth it. I would not hesitate to recommend Tom's Clock repair for any type make or brand of clock repair, in home or at his home address. I consider the money well spent to have the job done right the first time.

Tom of Tom's Clocks was the consummate professional with superb service borne of decades of experience. He formerly had a shop in an upscale Manhattan neighborhood, but now he works out of a basement workshop in his apartment complex. No matter because this gentleman knows his trade. He diagnosed the issues with the two clocks and gave me a coherent explanation of what he needed to do to fix them. His prices are more than fair. Turnaround time was a few days. This was as straight forward and pleasant a transaction as you could want. Highest recommendation.

The repairman (Alex) arrived on time, discussed repairs to be made and cost. Alex completed the repairs and gave instructions for maintenance before he left. He was professional and personable. The cost was fair for the work performed. I would recommend this company to others.

In both cases described above, his services were expert, timely, and exceeded our expectations. He is reliable and truly a master at his craft.
Description of Work: Mr. Scalzo immediately identified our "Russian Railway Clock" as an amalgam of components from different countries. He also, just as quickly, identified the problem with this non-functioning clock and was able to repair it in a few days at modest cost. He is obviously an expert's expert in clock diagnosis and repair. He maintains an inventory of long out-of-date parts, many of which are no longer made or obtainable by any means, and is as such a service of last resort for difficult clock problems. We later brought to him a German cuckoo clock, long-nonfunctional, which he was able to restore to its former functionality by doing a near-total renovation for $275.

Howard King owner of Tom's Clocks was contracted to clean service and repair our treasured Grandfather clock but with age and numerous family moves it just could not be made to function as it should. Howard is very polite and knowledgeable and arrived right on time for his service call and the final replacement/repair. The service call would have cost us $150.00 and he spent close to three hours trying to get it to work properly. We allowed the clock to run on it's own for a week but it just would not work properly and we opted to just have the main working assembly replaced with new. The $600 cost included all parts and labor and the $150 was waived from the original service call. We now have a new clock with a 2 year guarantee and the confidence that we can call on Howard for any of our other clock repair requirements.

I have not gotten the movement back yet as he said it will take 6 to 8 weeks to finish.
Description of Work: I have a grandfather clock that my father an I built from a kit 40 years ago. I told the repair man that clock chimed intermittently and he examined the movement and showed me what was happening, and I could see the normal ware and tear of 40 year old movement. He said oiling the movement would not help, as I always had the movement oiled regularly and I knew it woul not help. So he took the movement back yo his shop to fix the problem.

The work was performed with remarkable efficiency and skill. We were prepared for delays (we approached Tom during the height of the year end holidays) but Tom's work was performed with great skill and speed. We undertook the restoration at our own risk, as Tom made it clear that due to its fragile condition, the clock was likely to be very susceptible to damage. Tom performed the restoration process in an incremental fashion taking care that if damage should occur, the entire clock would not be ruined. We are extremely pleased with the results - Tom is currently repairing a second heirloom for us!
Description of Work: For sentimental reasons, we were seeking to repair / restore a family heirloom, a non-working, highly tarnished electric collector's clock from the 1920's. As we quickly learned, the repair of electric clocks is a lost art and several clock repair businesses turned us away with no suggestions as to how to proceed. Using Angie's List as a resource, we called Tom's Clock Repair and were invited to bring the clock in for assessment. We met with Tom Scalzo who has been repairing clocks for fifty-five years! We soon determined that Tom has a true passion for clock repair and that he takes well-deserved pride in restoring neglected clocks to their previous glory. Initially, we had the clock repaired, which was in and of itself extremely gratifying. Then we asked Tom to try to restore the clock, which is extremely fragile. We asked Tom to undertake the restoration at our own risk. The result was stunning - the clock truly looks new. We could not be more pleased. Tom brings an extremely rare, old world craftmanship to his work.
