After the work, the surface of the entire sink was pebbly and gross. After 7 months, the cracks all appeared again, and water was leaking into the vanity below the sink. When we called about our guarantee, he said there must be a torque in the sink, making it crack; and if he fixed it again, it would just crack again. He gave us the name of a plumber friend of his to come take a look at it. So much for our guarantee. And if there were a "torque" in the sink, it probably would have cracked years before!
Description of Work: My porcelain bathroom sink had had something dropped on it that caused it to crack after 6 years of use. He said he could resurface it, guaranteed for year, as long as we followed cleaning directions, which we did. (cleaned with only Windex or Scrubbing Bubbles).

Response from Surface Magic LLC
We informed him from the start that it was due to the fact that when they installed the sink the drain was tightened down to much. We are not plumbers. We are not the ones who installed the sink. However, due to this fact there was too much pressure on the bowl of the sink which caused it to crack. Which is why we kept telling you this, You really should have contacted the person who installed it and loosen the drain. As they way over tightened it. Sorry this is not our fault and we are sorry that this happened. However you really should have contacted the ones who installed the sink and they would have fixed it for you. That is why on the instruction sheet from the manufacturer they inform you not to tighten the drain down too much. Otherwise this would occur. So we have no idea why who ever installed it did not read or follow there instructions. If the installer would have this would never have happened. Next time please read instructions before doing something. No we did not install it so we did not over tighten it. This comment really should go to that person and not us.

Contracted on 8/6/15 to refinish counterstops and backsplash, countertops 9/26, 27 and tile backsplash on 9/17,18 for total cost$1500.00. We gave him a check for $500.00 at that time. To begin with, he is not at all professional: - He did not tell us that the process would not only produce VERY strong (probably toxic) fumes(he wore a respirator mask for the entire process), but that we would not have access to our kitchen AT ALL for 3 days (our medication was in one of the drawers). No dishes, silverware, glasses, food, etc. -He showed up with the wrong product, the one for the backsplash, not the countertops and complained that he would have to go back to get the product for the countertops, and despite being called the day before to remind him to bring something to cover the sink hole (which he said he would do) he complained that we did not have anything to use. -He pulled a kitchen chair from my living room to stand on to tape up plastic without asking (no stepstool?). -From the time he put on the the color coat I stated that it did not look like what I picked out. He insisted it was correct and said to wait until the top coat was on "the colors would pop". -He attempted to leave for the day with my kitchen doors taped and plasticed OPEN. When we said the doors had to close for the night, he said no, closing the doors would ruin the finish. We said that was unacceptable, and he managed to loosen up the plastic and paper and get the door almost closed, but unable to lock. -When he left after applying the final coat, he told us WE could remove the paper the next day "just run a knife over the top". When we refused, he complained he didn't have time the next day to come over because he had another job, but finally acquiesced. We told him again that the color did not seem right, and he insisted it was. I called him on 9/1 and asked him to come over with his tile samples because I was sure I would not have chosen the color on the counters. He refused. I told him I looked up the colors online to be sure, and it was not the color I contracted for. He refused to come over stating he was too busy. A woman called on 9/2 and left a message that he would apply another color. We called on 9/3 and insisted he bring the samples over again to settle the issue, and that I was not interested in another color because we also had some issues with the quality of the work. The finish is uneven, he missed some areas, and he got the finish on our floor. At this point he became belligerent refusing to come over and when we stated that at this point we wanted our $500.00 back, he stated "there aren't any f***ing refunds" and hung up the phone. After several attempts to resolve this situation through the BBB, he still refused to produce the samples. That resulted in a recommendation to see an attorney. The NYS Attorney General's complaint was met with a 5 page rambling denial, and resulted in their recommending we see an attorney. This Angie's List resolution process is the last before seeking resolution through an attorney.

Response from Surface Magic LLC
To whom it may concern: Surface Magic LLC, is writing this letter referring to the Customers, they claim that they would have never picked out a grey color but they did, during the estimate, The contractor Robert Irwin, brought his case of samples full of different colors that they could have picked, with different codes on the back of each color sample, so there is never a mistake for a wrong color, Robert our contractor was sure to have them take their time, Robert was there for one hr, in case they needed help with a color which they chose from the sample case while he measured for job that he was going to do for the Customers that week, Robert explained all about the job and that it would take 1 wk for the color to come in (special order), because it’s ordered with the code on the back of the sample, and explained the complete procedure carefully to be sure they understood, they said all was understood and decided to go ahead with (BACKSPLASH) BIRCH BARK CODE 6074 / DESERT STONE (COUNTERTOPS) 6025 and they weren’t interested in the other colors in the case, while Robert was measuring he purposely took his time so the Customers can take both their time and chose the color they wanted for their backsplash and countertops as he gave them time to talk it over amongst each other, Robert waited at least 10 min or more maybe 20 min, so they wouldn’t regret the sample color they picked, Mrs. Customer claimed she loved (BACKSPLASH) BIRCH BARK CODE 6074 / DESERT STONE (COUNTERTOPS) 6025 and it would look nice on her countertops. Robert asked them several time, if that was the color they both wanted and they both specified yes several times, Robert pleaded more than once he’d be glad to help them out if they still weren’t sure they looked at the sample again and (BACKSPLASH) BIRCH BARK CODE 6074 / DESERT STONE (COUNTERTOPS) 6025 In bold print on the front of the bottle, and still claimed they loved the color, it’s in black and white the code no. Mr, Customer should the bold code to Silvia and was very happy how Robert was attentive towards them in choosing their favorite color DESERT STONE (COUNTERTOPS) 6025. The letters were boldly in front of Mr. Customer’s face, in English he stared at the bottle for about half hr. and read every word Robert asked him if he could help him understand all the instructions on the bottle, Mr. Customer read all the instructions, ingredients everything that applied on the bottle even the warning which was fine, he turned to Robert and gave Robert to go ahead so that’s when Robert called me to put their order in right away ( Deserts Stone, 6025 ) so no mistakes could have been made, therefore we called the manufacture immediately to give them the code and color right away to be made, not to mention the color code no. on the back of the container is huge in bold print, Mr. Customer claimed didn’t see the no. which is a lie as he only stared for over 15 minutes on the bottle Robert saw him do so, Robert made sure he understood what was the label meant, and that he did notice that the code was the right code, Robert called me immediately and I made an appointment for them right away as soon as they could get in, they were very sure that they wanted an appointment which we also asked them several times if they were sure they were to make an appointment at this time. Soon as Robert called me from their home he made sure I had all they’re information in the system so nothing could be mistaken for a wrong code or color. So it’s in my software in their appointment, in the computer for proof I leave all the clients information in the system for proof they’re information is all confidential, in case we have problems like were having with the Customer’s, Mr., Kratzke, Plus on the contract which you have. There’s no way Mr., Customer could have not understood the instructions on the bottle, he read the bottle very thoroughly and then he claimed right to the Contractors face several times that he completely understood, and gave the go ahead more than once, he made sure this was what he wanted, and showed it to his wife Silvia, they were both positive that this was the color that would look nice on their countertops and would look good in their home, they chose a color for their backsplash also and were very positive of the color for the splash the back splash also goes by color code, Robert again asked the two of them if they weren’t sure with either color he’s be more than happy to help them with choosing a color so they can be happy with a color they chose if they were confused about any colors they were looking at. But both the Customers claimed they didn’t need any help, that this was the color they would love, the color was desert stone, code 6025, before Robert left their home, he again said to them both, do you still want the desert stone he even replied the desert stone. We let them pick out the color they wanted. As it is ordered and it takes one wk to come in, before Robert began spraying their countertops he again asked them both are you sure on the desert stone color because you can still change it if you both. They still wanted that color Robert asked 3 different times if you both still aren’t sure we can go back and pick a color out together no rush , but they replied again they were sure and they loved the desert stone color. But after it was sprayed and cured a week later they called us rudely and very upset, and wanted their money back stating they never picked out this sample which just shocked Robert since he was there and saw them with his own two eyes pick out the Desert Stone with the code on the back the same code, 6025 he even showed them the code before he ordered the color and the bottle to show them what the color would look like, so they’re would be no problems. They claimed they would never ever pick out anything with Grey in it. It must be our mistake ass we would never pick out anything with Grey in it. But they did and the manufacturer letter confirms this fact. That is why they were asked 3 different times. As this is a custom order item and there are no refunda s it is a special order item. Which it is and takes a week to come in. Mr. and Mrs. Kratzke must be color blind for they do not know their colors, how can we be mistaken with this couple stared at the Midwest Chemical bottle for 20 minutes or more read every word, and instructions, and asked 10 times or more are sure of the color and kept implied “yes were absolutely positive no doubt in our mind”. Where are we wrong here! Even the witness we showed saw grey in the desert stone and they were other contractors, They both stared at the sample for 20 min or more, 20 min. you would think that if anyone stared at color they were going to have applied on their countertops that long, that they would be sure that was what they wanted it’s a simple color nothing complicated, Most it only takes all our clients 5 min. to decide and no more most of the times less. Mr. Kratzke held the bottle of the color and read the label 10 times for 20 min like he was going to sign a contract sorry but this is all nonsense, after all that, they still wanted the desert stone before the job was done, after the job was finished the denied the whole thing, we are a very professional business well known and well liked by our clients they all love us because we’re friendly understanding and patient with all of them, our customers mean a lot to us, we have been in business for years now. We recognize these types of people unfortunately they can’t be avoided the Customer’s is one of them, if the Customer’s didn’t understand what they were reading or if they didn’t like the color or were embarrassed to say they were confused and needed help we would have rather they admit they didn’t understand. As I informed them before ordering that I would be more than happy to help you pick out a color to match your needs. But they replied we don’t need your help. All they had to do is say so and say it before the job was done not after we love helping our clients out that’s what we’re here for but how can we help them if they don’t want us too, then they have themselves to blame like the Customer’s. We did offer to help them several time what more did they want him to do, and made sure they were positive of the color and what they were getting into, he even showed them the color and what it would look like, they claimed this was the one they chose and no other color would do, after the countertops were finished they had the nerve and audacity to say they did not pick a grey color which is a lie we are not amatures that we wouldn’t of known better, if they think they can pull this nonsense, their wrong at least not with Surface Magic LLC, I have the proof in the system in our computer in bold print, they didn’t think of that though did they, I have the code and the exact color desert stone Robert called me that day from their house, about the color I have the exact day, time and year in the our system, I heard them in the back ground clearly while Robert was on the phone talking to me to prepare for their appointment, that they were both clearly saying they were sure about the desert stone color and raving about it, and saying how nice it would look, and couldn’t wait to have the job done. That is why the contract was written on that day of the estimate. I heard them with my own ears so clearly that Robert didn’t even have to tell me the code or color, was listening to them while putting in the code and color. This is all stirred up nonsense. If they are color blind. All they had to do was infrom us of that. We would have been more than happy to assist them. . The Customers just want their money back, sadly to say all signs show, Robert has it boldly in our contract NO REFUNDS what so ever that implies to all our clients not just them they didn’t even read the contract all clients do, they’re not getting their money back it states in our Contract reviewed by our Lawyer. Especially on custom orders like this. Robert made sure they chose the right color before he left their home, now all their doing is denying they chose that color. Robert showed me and others the same color they chose, as a witnesses, they all said that there was grey in the sample, so then why did Mrs. Silvia Customer pick it out that color with Grey in it? Especially, if they did not want Grey. We still do not have any idea why, if she did not like grey, why did she chose Desert Stone most of color had grey in it, they chose, look at the letter from the manufacturer. That, we had to contact to get confirm this. Which was for Desert stone 6025 yourself it is mostly grey, she should have told us that she didn’t want a color with a grey in it, unless she can’t understand her colors, out of all the colors she picks a color with a lot of grey in it, she picked it our themselves without Roberts help, which they because they kept refusing his help over and over every time he wanted to help them and a lot too, So either their color blind, or they want their money back. Color blind is more like it. Robert had to call the manufacture that manufacturer wrote a letter purposely, stating that desert stone 6025 has grey in it and that they Customer’s picked a sample with grey in it Robert cannot take the blame for their mistake, he did not pressure them on picking a sample they claimed could were capable of choosing the right color themselves, he suggested samples that would go nicely in their Kitchen Countertops but the Customer’s are so color blind, that they keep thinking they wouldn’t have chosen a grey color, the manufacture, sent out a letter agreeing that we were right especially after we explained how the Customer’s were insisting and causing trouble about the sample they picked , I hate to keep repeating ourselves but it’s common sense we have admitted we were wrong if we had been wrong, our contractor always makes our clients happy, he was doing the best he could to make sure the Customer’s were very positive about their color for their countertops but they simple chose to think they knew what they were doing on their own accord, We are very attentive towards every and single one of clients, that is our motto and always will be, Robert would never leave their home, if they weren’t sure of the color they picked, he offered and kept offering, and then he left because they were very sure of the color they wanted and loved to have on their countertops, their contradicting themselves and they continue to do so. We were very patient with them, by letting them choose a color, and if they were confused and willing to answer all the questions they had if they were very confused, They should have made themselves aware to us, that they were confused and not happy with the color. Robert could of took his time until need be even if it meant calling his next appointment and telling the client he was going to be a little late , Robert still stayed in their home with them until they were satisfied and happy with the color, Robert offered a few different colors that would look good on their countertops and none of the colors he offered them were grey or had grey in it, they refused every color except the desert stone 6025, but they were insistent on the color and how it would look and match their Kitchen, this is what is very frustrating is very simple, they claim they didn’t pick anything with grey in it, they knew desert stone had grey in it, you mean to tell me, they picked a sample color with grey studied it for a long time, and couldn’t notice it had grey in the color they chose, they have the nerve to complain, it’s Surface Magic LLC that should be complaining and making a fuss over all this, after all Robert didn’t pick the color for them they should blame each other. They claim when it was sent to the manufacture, it wasn’t the same color, not true, AGAIN IT HAS A CODE ON THE BACK, the manufacture makes the color by the code on the sample so the color is exact. And no mistakes can be made it goes to show they don’t know what they’re talking about, or anything for that matter but everyone seems to go on their side when their wrong!!, the company doesn’t make it by hand, it’s a very well known co. and they been in business for yrs. Their colors have always been exact, and they never had complaints from customers. They are the first client to pull this, we never had any problems in the past with sample picking before, There is really no problem to all this, they are the problem, they cannot admit they are wrong, they do know they picked out the desert stone, they loved the desert stone while Robert was there, they loved the desert stone so much, they did not want to see any other samples, but they hated what it looked like after the job was complete, that doesn’t make sense, Surface Magic LLC shouldn’t have repeated all this, it’s not hard to understand. They were very incompetent about picking out their color, we call these type of customers buyer’s remorse customers, we see it all the time, we recognize it perfectly, that’s what they’re both pulling and they know they can get away with it, they’d do anything to get their money back like their doing now LIEING, they can’t fool us at all. They caused us nothing but aggravation and frustration, their causing total embarrassment towards themselves making a big fuss over a problem they caused from the start. If they would have chosen another sample they would have definitely complained about that sample too, sadly that’s how they are, customers you can’t make happy no matter how nice or attentive you are towards them, Their impossible, They still want to make trouble, by claiming their right on this, well you be the judge, I’m sorry they don’t know what color grey is they wouldn’t know any color if they picked it, We were even willing to go back and correct their countertops for nothing to make them happy that’s what kind of co. we are, I called them myself and talked to Mr. Customer and he agreed by all means sure a free job why not, but he didn’t want to make an appointment without his wife knowing, Mrs. Silvia Customer, called me that night, and demanded that we put her before our other clients who have been already waited wks. For their appointments, We explained nicely to her why we couldn’t do that but if there is a cancelation she would be the first we would call, immediately but that was good enough for her, you can’t reason with the woman she’s impossible, and explained how would she like if we put someone in front of her and then she would have to wait another few wks. To get her turn, she didn’t care and was very upset and still want to be put ahead. They should be mad at themselves, because they picked out the desert stone with grey in it, we always admit we were wrong when it comes to our clients they come first but this time we are right they are wrong, we feel their making a fool of us insulting our intelligence, especially when the Contractor was right in front of them watching them to be sure they wanted the right color, and was very patient with them and understanding, they pull this what kind of game is this, were trying understand maybe it’s because the couple is older, that they didn’t chose the right color, or didn’t see all the grey in the sample, they did not want us back in their home so we couldn’t go back and help them after they threw us out and told us never to come back, their exact words, and were exceptionally rude, no tub refinishing co. would go back and refinish a clients countertops for nothing no cost we were willing too, but we wanted to make them happy, we were willing to do anything to make them so they’d be satisfied, Robert was even willing to have them pick out another color sample and this time he would help them even if they didn’t want help, But to no avail they did not want or help, The bottom line is the Customer’s just want a free job, there’s nothing else to talk about, Nothing makes them happy, they should have been very happy that were willing to do a second job for free and just for them, we gave them a break on the price, for the job when Robert was there for the whole Estimate, because they were older and we felt sorry for them, we don’t do that for everyone, they only paid half of the price, they still owes us a lot more money, and their still complaining, Robert let it go because we didn’t satisfy them, with the work performed. What other contractor would let their clients go that owe them money, NONE, for proof of the color of desert stone, Midwest Chemicals Manager verified the fact, with a 3 page letter, showing that desert stone officially had grey in it. They verified the code, 6025, to the order the manufactures letter that we’ll be sending supports the fact, that DESERT STONE 6025 DOES HAVE GREY IN IT and a large percentage too. Nothing left to say, the letter will explain that the Customer’s are defiantly wrong and we are right. Thanks you. Surface Magic LLC: Sincerely yours, Surface Magic

The product that was provided looks ok. The product didn't completely cover the old tile, but our old pitted bathtub does look wonderful. But the problem we have encountered is with the damage done to our home from the proess that was provided. The fumes were overwhelming, but to my unprofessional eye, it seemed that the provider was taking appropriate actions for ventilation of the chemicals used in the resurfacing process. Towards the end of the application process when I was writting the check for the service I noticed a layer of "grit" on my kitchen counter tops. I brought this to the attention of the provider, he said that it was from the sanding process and that a dry cloth would remove it. At this point I had no reason to doubt him, after all he was the professional I had hired to perform the service. Later that evening we (my husband and I) began to notice that not only was there a layer or "grit" on my kitchen counter tops but on the end tables in my living room as well. And after further examination it seemed that there was "grit" on all flat surfaces in our home. Also, we discovered that the areas in the bathroom that the provider taped off had this "grit" on them too; the vanity, medicine cabmet, and all new fixtures. Not getting too excited I tried cleaning the "grit" off as the provided had instructed. But it did not do anything!! The next morning my husband called the company and spoke with an employee that said she would ask the provider to contact us. When the provider called us back (an hour later, or so, but very timely) we missed his call. He left a message saying that there was no way a clear spray could have gotten all over our house as the product he used was white. He advised us to use acetone (nail polish remover) on all the surfaces that were a problem. This solution seemed impossible to us, as it would remore the finish on all our surfaces. After several more calls to the company the provider agreed to come to our home to see the problems that were present. However, the day before the provider was to arrive he cancelled and said that he would not come to see the damage that the resurfacing caused throughout our home. After using several different "safe" products to remove the "grit" nothing has worked. I am sure that the acetone solution that the provider suggested would work, however it would also remove the finished surface from my property. If you are tempted to use this company please know the problems that could happen. The biggest problem we have is that not only is our home covered in what we can only assume was overspray, but we are also concerned with the chemicals that I was exposed to during the process of the resurfacing and the risidual that remained in our home after the service was complete.

All appointments, phone no. and client info. are kept in our software going back many years ago we would know if we did work for this person or now which we did not.. We looked up this address as the name didn't sound familiar. So I did a search with just the street and nothing popped up she just assumed it was our co. because there is other co. out there with the similar name as us. These people have us confused with another company. We do excellent and outstanding work and always aim to please our clients we are always neat and clean up after ourselves, We are sorry that this woman wasn't pleased with the work that the other co. provided She should have came to us. There name would be in our database. That also explains why the name didn't sound familiar. Sorry but please leave comments on the right company. AS we never did any work for these people. That is why we spend several hours doing just the prep work taping, papering and masking off all surrounding areas so that this doesn't happen. So our clients are very pleased. Next time please make sure your writing bad things about the right co. so people out there don't think we do bad work. We hope we don't see this misunderstanding again. Thank you. .
