We had an excellent experience with Jonathan. He was very timely and efficient and extremely communicative throughout our entire project. After another contractor did a horrible job, he was right there to fix things and I couldn't have asked for a better experience . I highly recommend!

Great Job! Jonathan Berkhoudt, owner of JB Deck Restoration and a true professional, did a super job restoring my 25 year old deck. The 14' wide stairway was totally rebuilt replacing all supporting lumber and stairs. All perimeter rails were also replaced. The 42' deck was stripped, sanded, treated and oil stained resulting in an unbelievable transformation. Jon definitely takes pride in his work and is very knowledgeable with his craft. I would highly recommend JB Deck Restorations for any type of deck renovation.
Description of Work: Deck renovation - rebuild/replace 14' wide stairs, replace all rails, strip, sand & oil seal entire 42' deck.

John was an excellent choice for our deck restoration work! He always arrived on time, including when quoting the job, and it was immediately apparent he is extremely knowledgeable about the work. He clearly communicated what was needed, and worked diligently over the course of two days to get it done. He also has integrity, as he informed us as the work progressed that a portion of the job initially quoted did not need to be done once the failing areas of the deck were more visible and easier to assess, thereby lowering his estimate of labor and materials. He proceeded to complete all of the other work in a manner that left us very satisfied. We will definitely call John again should the need arise.

Came when he said he would come, did what he said he would do, cleaned up after himself, and guaranteed work. so far, so good. He protected all my bushes.

I got an estimate from Jonathan Berkhoudt to power wash my deck, and then apply a stain and sealer to it. He quoted me a price of $690 for which he described as the Total Care package. He gave me a call letting me know that he would be over to my house on 6/12/14 sometime between 8 and 9am to power wash my deck. He showed up at 9:45am on that day to do the power washing. He apologized for being late and then proceeded to do the work which took about an hour. I gave him a down payment of $200 cash on that day for which he noted payment on the estimate sheet. He told me he would be back out on Saturday, 6/14/14 to stain and seal my deck. He said he was taking off on Sunday, 6/15/14, since it is Father's Day so he would be out on Saturday to finish the job assuming there is no rain. My family and I waited home all day Saturday, 6/14/14, for Jonathan to show up to do my deck and he never showed up or called. The weather was perfect at my house but I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking that maybe it was raining up where he is from since he's up in North Tonawanda and I'm down in Hamburg. I had not heard from Jonathan at all until I decided to call him on Tuesday, 6/17/14, to see what was going on and when he plans on finishing my deck. I left a voicemail on his phone asking him when he is coming to finish my deck and explained to him that we waited home all day for him to come out and do the work on our deck. A few hours later he called me back and told me he didn't remember telling me he would be out to do my deck on Saturday, 6/14/14. I asked him well when do you plan on finishing my deck? He told me probably this Saturday or Sunday, 6/21/14 or 6/22/14, depending on the weather. I told him this is completely unacceptable for a contractor to not show up when they say they are and then not follow up with us or give a definite date when they will be out. After this we decided to cut our losses with Jonathan and go to a more reputable company to finish our deck. Jonathan is very unprofessional, and has no integrity whatsoever. I would advise anyone to stay away from this contractor.

[member's name removed] is wrong. *In his description he said that I told him I would be there to finish the project on Saturday, but I wouldn't work Sunday (father's day). Why would anyone say I will finish a Job and then take off the next day?? Because I did not say that at all. * I asked on the initial phone call and again on the estimate in person if there were any deadlines; He said No. -He had a deadline and waited too long to hire anyone to do his project. His deadline was Saturday 6/21, the day of his son's baptism ( which I had found out on a phone call Tuesday from his very upset wife( 5 days after starting their project & 3 days from when I said the earliest I would be able to return weather permitting).They both had taken turns with me to explain how upset they were.. even though the [member's name removed]and I knew the truth; the customer is always right. They had threatened to find another person to finish the job that they only paid me $200 out of $400 they had owed me at this point. I was never rude or unprofessional. I even apologized for any misunderstanding and asked for their patience while I tried to flip flop my own schedule to accommodate their now new schedule to me. After telling [member's name removed] that I would make my way out there on Thursday to finish up for them in time for their son's baptism party, I over heard [member's name removed] in the background, "tell him to do it and we just wont pay him." - I am not making this up; this was a first for me and I feel that I handled it well. When [member's name removed] got back on the phone, I had asked if they had another person in mind that would be able to finish the project. - what would you do if you were me? She said "no, but that's okay we want you to come finish it". I then told her I'm sorry but I think that someone else may be able to help you & if you'd like I would give you the names of some companies I know of that do this type of work. I was never rude, condescending or anything. I was upfront and professional. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was on time and called [member's name removed], and left a voicemail to let him know that nobody had answered his door. I left and after receiving a call back,went back after about 20-30 minutes. I proceeded to start the beginning process despite no answer at the door and no $200 up front. Our contracted agreement was $690 total for the total care package. The money was negotiated to be $200 up front on the day the project was to be started. $200 again after the deck was stripped, power washed and treated; then the final payment and taxes due upon completion ( staining and sealing of 2 coats in one day ). I was given $200 from [member's name removed] after completion and did not want to embarrass her and ask [member's name removed] the other $200 promised by her husband ( I figured not a problem, I would receive the rest all in one payment, even though $200 doesn't cover the entire supplies/materials for the entire project. I thought[member's name removed] was an honest individual) After finishing the project on Thursday, I had explained that the first possible day to stain any deck would be after 3 days of dry weather. I had explained I am not working on Father's day, despite previous projects that may have been able to be stained that Sunday. The earliest I would have been able to stain the [member's name removed] deck would be the following Saturday, weather permitting. At no time did I ever say that I would be back to stain the deck in 2 days after drenching and power washing their deck. In fact as I have done with every estimate I go on, I always ask if there are any deadlines I need to be aware of; the response was no. I had also explained I am very busy this is mid-season and previous people who have had their decks powerwashed and are waiting for their project to be stained will have theirs stained first ( in the event of a deadline I could-would ask my current clients if they would mind waiting to better accommodate someone else who may have an engagement of some sort, that it is up to them and I would respect whatever answer they give me) On the following Tuesday is when all heck broke loose. I had a voicemaill that I listened to when leaving a project and called via blutooth while driving to talk to [member's name removed]. During this conversation it was revealed to me that there was in fact a deadline; and that I was the brunt of their unfortunate time management. - I apologized & I doing anything wrong. - I tried to accommodate them even though I was lied to by [member's name removed]. - I had only received $200/$400 promised. I worked for hours, through part of a monsoon and have photo's with time stamps to prove the time the project was started and finished. -I had also power washed part of the patio that the deck stairs lead t, complimentary . -I had collected a broken pint glass, directly in front of their driveway entrance and let [member's name removed] know I placed it on her porch. I stand by my work. I have many many great references and previous customers. Sometimes you may judge someone wrongly, and we cant please everyone. The reason I had not responded for 10 months is because I wanted to be noble and pay them back the $200 they gave me, in hopes this horrible review would be deleted. I did not have an extra $200 to give & I also would probably have regretted paying someone their money back to have a review removed. I have many previous customers & referrals . Jonathan Berkhoudt. I saw this contractor at my neighbor's house power washing the exterior. I noticed a marked improvement as they were working. Since we are planning to list our house on the market in a few weeks, I asked them for a bid to do our house as well. He came right over and gave us a very reasonable estimate. He also gave us a discount and our neighbor a discount for the 'referral'. He indicated that they would probably be able to start that very day, as soon as they were done across the street. I was pleasantly surprised that they would be able to start immediately, as I was thinking it would take at least a week for them to have availability. He came over in the afternoon and apologized that the neighbor?s house was taking longer than expected and they wouldn't be able to start until the next day. I was completely okay with that, because signing someone and having them start the same day is almost unheard of. I also liked that he didn't rush my neighbor's house in order to start on our house. They did come the next day as promised. JB Deck's slogan is "We are only satisfied when you are & we don't skip steps". I have to say that they lived up to this. They took their time and after finishing and doing the walk-around, I noticed a slight streaky film on the windows. I had also asked for my front porch to be sprayed, and they had missed it. But when I pointed those two things out, he apologized and immediately took care of them without any hassle, even after they had put away all their equipment. They ended up doing the windows by hand and used cleaner on the front porch to remove a mossy area from where I had a hanging basket last summer. When they were done, I was very satisfied with their work and gave them a tip to show my appreciation for taking the extra time to make things right. It is hard to find contractors these days that do that without hassle.
