They were an excellent company. He came in late the first day, but he was taking care of emergency at some other homes where they had some leaks due to rain. They take care of emergencies first, but they still made it even after the company had closed for the day on a Friday. He actually stayed late to do the work for my bathroom as well. They didn?t charge us overtime or to come back a second day because he didn?t have enough time to finish both jobs. Their price was pretty good in comparison to what I had gotten from a couple of other companies.

Called Hertel Hardware & Plumbing on a Wednesday and they set up an appointment for two days later, at noon. The only nit was that they came about 1pm, but compared with waiting for the cable guy, it was a pleasure. They apologized profusely and said that the schedule should have given me a window of a couple of hours. No problem. John and Eldon were courteous and explained what they were doing, letting me watch. Within 15 minutes they were done and packing up -- and cleaning up! The bill was just about 60 dollars, with about 45 charged for the service call and 15 minutes of labor. Very fair, I thought. Will definitely uses HHP again and will recommend them to friends.

Another plumber on Angie's List, who doesn't do excavation work, referred me to Hertel Hardware & Plumbing. I called & the owner came to the house to give us an estimate when he said he would & emailed me a detailed estimate that same day. We signed the contract on July 7. They started the work on July 22. It rained the next day so they returned on Friday, July 24, and they were able to turn on our water that day. We immediately had excellent water pressure. The city was unable to inspect the completed job that day, so the plumbers covered the two holes in the ground with plywood & surrounded the holes & the piles of dirt with yellow caution tape for the weekend. About seven hours after the water was turned on, the supply line to the upstairs toilet popped loose & sprayed water all over the floor! This was not entirely unexpected & we do not blame Hertel Plumbing for it in the least. This house is about 110 years old & many people of varying skill levels have worked on it over the years. Our water pressure before was so low we weren't able to use the upstairs bathroom at all. We got another supply line at the hardware store & put it on ourselves. Monday, July 27, after the inspection, the plumbers filled the holes & repaved where they dug into the street.

Everything went very well except for the fact that they did not ask me which washer belonged to which apartment, so now one washer is plumbed to the lower apt's gas meter, but plugged into the upper's outlet and vice versa for the other washer. I did not make them re-plumb it.

Other than one case in which a new window wasn't quite the right size, they always get your windows or glass done and ready within a few days. The prices are ridiculously low.

I've used Hertel for years, back when the owner and his son were more highly involved in the work. I have two old furnaces that have needed constant care as I stave off the eventuality of replacing them. They're great furnaces, just really old. A few years back, the young guys who worked on them were knowledgable about steam and always came prepared. But lately, they have twice deferred to their supply guys to help diagnose and even fix problems. They never seem to be able to complete a job on the initial visit, and I'm never sure if they charge me the time it takes them to go fetch the parts they need. They're message system is antiquated. If the fellow who takes the messages forgets, you'll never get a call back. I'd still call them to snake out the basement drain, but there's a major repair to be done there, and I won't use them for it. I used to be rather devoted to Hertel, so it's with regret that I let them go.
