Very pleased! We found Cortese Construction Services to be very professional and caring from our first encounter to final inspection of the job. They instilled a peace of mind and confidence that our job would be given every attention to detail and that the end result would be worth waiting for. We are especially grateful to our salesman and designer, Tyler Samer. He is very knowledgeable and is a good listener! He designed a space that was just what we wanted but that fit into the existing space with minimal disturbances to features of our home (original roofline and dryer exhaust). We agreed to have a small window removed from the laundry room and our gutter downspout was relocated. All repairs and necessary replacement of siding and drywall are virtually undetectable. Tyler was also respectful of our budget concerns in designing a space that worked for us. He was our “go to” person along the way and he visited us to tour the finished product, ensuring that we were happy & satisfied. I can’t say enough about our construction crew - the dynamic duo of Jeff and Andrea! They did such quality work work every step of the way. They were also so nice to work with - I was almost sorry to see them go at the end! Alyssa was the voice on the phone who very pleasantly kept us informed along the way. She was very kind and understanding when shipping delays (due to Covid & unavoidable) caused a considerable delay in the time from contract to start of work. Still, once our job was begun, they stayed on it until it was completed. We never felt neglected in any way. Marisa was also very good in communicating billing according to our contract, but also including a few job changes that were either necessary or requested by us (such as a last minute decision to add skirting around the outside of the project and the repair of water damage to the back of the house, which was unpredictable until the old deck was removed.). I would recommend Cortese Construction Services to anyone without hesitation.

After interviewing three general contractors we selected Cortese to remodel our basement into a game room, TV / Entertainment area and ½ bath. We are extremely pleased with the process and results. We first met with Tyler S. to discuss preliminary ideas, take measurements, review concept drawings and finalize the project. Timelines were discussed and agreed on. Cortese held a pre-construction meeting where we met the project team including Brian, Vinney, Dillon and site supervisor / lead carpenter Dan. During this meeting, the team, while reviewing the plans suggested ideas and minor changes that would enhance our project. Project started on time and completed on schedule. Dillon was excellent on keeping us up to date on the process and keeping to the schedule, which was particularly important to us. His communication skills were impressive. We can not say enough good things about Dan and towards the end of the project his assistant Mike. They were meticulous in their work, fantastic craftsmanship and so detailed oriented. The entire team was so considerate while in our home, no swearing, extremely polite, and trustworthy. At the end of every day, they ensured to clean up the entire project area. The new addition turned out so much better than we envisioned. We are incredibly pleased we chose Cortese and would hire them again for future projects. We strongly recommend Cortese to our family, friends and anyone looking for a General Contractor.

From day one of the consultation to the last day they completed work, Cortese was incredible. Every step of the process was clearly articulated, planned and implemented. The quality of the materials, the quality of the work and most importantly, the quality of the people were top notch. We have received so many compliments on the work and we couldn't be more proud to tell everyone that Cortese Construction did the work.

The experience with Cortese was excellent! From start to finish, everyone we dealt with (Dominic, Dillon, Ryan, and Rebecca) were all extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and polite. Ryan (our foreman) was punctual, thorough, and a very hard worker. He was very organized and always left our bathroom clean. He worked extremely hard to assure we were not without the use of the shower for an extended period of time. He did amazing work and we are extremely happy and pleased with how everything turned out!!

We were bid $2,600 for an interior railing install and some minor drywall/carpentry. Two days prior to the job starting, they called and said they underbid, and that it really would be $9,600. This was after waiting 5 months for them to come out for estimate, and provide estimate. Very disappointing

Thank you for writing. While we understand it can’t make up for the time you lost, we truly do apologize for the inconvenience this experience has caused you. After review of your estimate it was deemed underestimated and based on our terms and conditions in the estimate you signed which was a time and materials estimate, we wanted to be completely upfront with you of the actual costs that would have been incurred during the job. We are sorry you had an unlikely experience with us. If we can help any way in the future, please don’t hesitate to let us know. I paid them $185 for a deposit and they said they wouldn't have anything open for three weeks. They said they would come out on the 9th at noon and they would be there for 4 hours. They did not show up. I called 4 times, no one called me back. I drove down to their office and their door was locked. I called again and no one one picked. They were also were going to charge me $140 per hour for two people to come out and do the work. I have had no work done at all. Even when they came to do the estimate, they were 30 minutes late! I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

It is really good. Their worker is extremely nice, extremely positive, he doesn't take any short cuts, and they go above and beyond. They took a heating duct and took it home and painted it to match the ceiling color, and he went around and tightened toilet paper holders and did things that we didn't even ask him to do. The work turned out perfectly, they did great work, they adjusted for certain challenges which other people may have not cared about, and our interactions were excellent. He was communicative and left long, indepth notes about what he was doing, and what needed to be done, and the care you needed to take afterwards. Their price is fair. The guy was here at 7:59 on both days.

Called Cortese for a $ estimate to restore/remodel two bathrooms due to January 2014 Extreme cold weather that froze pipes in upper bathroom. When it was disclosed that it would be an Insurance claim, they wouldn't bother with me. "They said it is their Policy". OK, I won't "bother" with them for anything else.
Description of Work: Would not come out to give estimate because it was an Insurance Claim!
Rating CategoryRating out of 5

Response from Cortese Brothers Constr Co Inc
We are concerned by this experience, especially since Cortese has a Disaster Restoration division that exclusively works with Insurance claims. It is certainly not our policy to not work with insurance claims. Sometimes, due to the increase volume of calls, we may have to place customers on a wait list until we can accurately assess work load before scheduling additional estimates. Some customers do not disclose that their estimate is for an insurance claim and schedule estimates with other divisions (like our handyman or production) divisions not understanding that divisions can not accurately estimate insurance claims. We understand that this can be frustrating. In these cases, another estimate from the insurance division is required to help ensure that they work is approved correctly and that the claim is not denied after work has been complete. However, we would certainly not turn away a customer because they are working with insurance. We we would welcome a phone call from this customer to discuss the experience so that we can try and better understand what happened.

We were under the impression that this customer was more than happy with the work we performed and never gave us an indication otherwise. The representative made the estimate without the owner present to give input. He also presented estimate without calculating the cost of labor. The cost of materials he listed was much higher than I could have bought the materials for. I felt the company did not really want the job; that perhaps it was too small for them to be bothered with.

During the appointment process, the homeowner is advised that they should be present at the time of the estimate. Not sure why the homeowner wasn't present for this estimate. Final estimates are mailed because the cost of materials must be calculated to reflect current market value. The customer should have been advised of that during the estimate and given an overview of the work during the initial consultation. There is a small mark-up for items for additional cost such as travel to procure items, shipping cost, etc. This estimate was for our Handyman division. Our estimates for our Handyman division do not include a completed labor cost because it is a Pay As You Go service, However, all estimates include estimated labor hours, hourly rate and cost of materials.

Satisfied with the whole experience. The sliding door location worked out as the steps unto the porch was already there and the door had to line up with the stairs. Had a couple issues for the punch list and they responded quickly to correct them. We contacted two other firms for the same work and Cortese Brother's pricing was competitive. They were recommended to us by a neighbor and are glad with them.
Description of Work: Hired Cortese Bros to furnish and install a sun room to enclose an existing porch area of our home. The roof and concrete floor was already in place. Cortese measured the openings and laid out the position of the window panels and sliding glass patio door. We reviewed his layout and discussed different options. We agreed on a layout and place an the order. The installation start time was a was a couple weeks later than stated due to the job just before us was taking longer than expected. They took three days to complete our job. The craftsmanship of both the window system and their installation was very good. The wall panels appear to be "study" and well built and the installation was professional.

Ultimately, if the quality had been good, I would not have been upset that the job ended up costing more than the original estimate. Given that the job cost significantly more AND I had to hire another person to fix the shoddy workmanship in the downstairs bathroom, I'd be very hesitant to use them again.
Description of Work: I hired them to do a variety of jobs - finish trim work in my kitchen, and do a minor wall repair in my downstairs bathroom. Their handyperson suggested I remove the wallpaper and repaint while doing the work in the bathroom, since it would probably be easier to do now than later. I agreed - big mistake. Their handyperson spent DAYS removing the wallpaper and damaged the wall in the process. Additionally, they put un-paintable silicone caulk around the baseboard, around the door case, and the sink/vanity! When all was said and done, I was charged a ridiculous amount of money for the extra hours spent doing this work, and ended up hiring a painter to come back when they were done to skim coat, sand, cut away the silicone caulk, and repaint to fix the horrible condition the bathroom was left in. The quality of the kitchen trim work was great - my only complaint about that is that it took way too long. I've had plenty of other similar jobs done throughout the house (we've replaced almost all the base/case on the first floor), so I have a pretty good idea of how long it should have taken. The final cost (billed hourly) was higher than the high-end of the original estimate (even after accounting for the extra 4 hours that an unforeseen project took). They did reduce it some after I called and complained, but given how much more I had to spend to fix the bathroom, I should have asked them to reduce it much more than they did.

This was a total fiasco. The only positive is that I didn't hire them to do much work...I wanted to start with this small project and see how they did before I hired them to do a total kitchen makeover. I am SO glad they didn't ruin any more of my home!
Description of Work: I thought the contractor was my friend - I have known him for years and have listened to his radio show. This ended up being the WORST contracting experience of my life.I had an estimate for tile installation and rebuilding a staircase in my 100 year old home. I was assigned a handyman who was paid by the hour -$60- and the total work was estimated to be about $6500.When the handyman arrived and pulled up carpeting over the floor, we discovered that tiles were already in place, although covered by a skim coat of cement. This involved chipping away at the skim coat, revealing the tile beneath. The handyman didn't want to do the job, saying it would takes weeks. I actually got down on the floor and did the work myself.I wanted a historically accurate staircase and chose a finial from a well respected millwork store. The handyman purchased the finial, but bought inferior quality spindles and attempted to use plywood to fix two broken stairs. Because he didn't buy the total staircase from the mill, I ended up with a job better suited for a basement, NOT a front hallway. One day, after 3 weeks work, he literally up and left, never to return. I had to hire another contractor to repair the broken stairs. The bill I received was over a thousand dollars MORE than the estimate, even though I did the tilework myself and he walked off the incomplete job. When I complained to the owner of the business, he insisted that he would have a new crew come out, rip out the defective work and re-do the job.His foreman came out and agreed the job wasn't satisfactory and reduced my bill back to the original estimate (even though I did the floor work myself). He took measurements and said a crew would be out soon. It's been 2 years since then and I NEVER heard from them again.DO NOT hire this man based on his radio show, where he proclaims to be a local "Bob Villa" like expert. They are not professional, not capable and are dishonest.

I was told the project should last about 3 days. After a week they said they would have to return to finish the following week. My father came to my house to let the workers in and was told they would finish by noon. After at our house for a few hours the worker told my father he would have to come back in the afternoon to finish the mud on the drywall, he never returned. I figured something came up and gave him the benefit of the doubt. However, after being a no-show for the rest of the week and not having my calls returned I e-mailed the owner directly. I was told that the worker was reprimanded but he stated that it should only be about an hours worth of work to finish. When the new worker showed he was shocked at how much needed to be done. It took him 3 full days to complete the work and worked at a snails pace. The finishing touches were less than I would have liked but I felt lucky to finally have it finished and usable. I finished sanding and patching the drywall myself. Overall, the work was decent but communication and professionalism was a huge black mark against the company. I would never recommend nor do business with them again!!!!!!!!!!!!
Description of Work: I have a new home and wanted to convert one of the bedrooms into a laundry room. They installed hot and cold faucets, drain pipe and built a platform for the machines. Access to pipes and electric were relatively simple so the price that was quoted was within reason.

As with any industry, finding a stand-up, respectable employee to hire can prove to sometimes be difficult. With this case- we had a bad hire and we replaced them, in the end we made the job right and our company President personally stepped in to make that happen. Since this job wrapped up, we have implemented several new protocols in our hiring process, such as background checks, and agility training- to ensure the quality of our work, and protect our 61 year old name. We at Cortese are making continuous strides to improve our constant communication with all customers, by implementing such things as the "daily diary", we are able to know what the customer’s concerns are and have our men be able to address the issue as soon as it is brought up to them. Another change that has also been instituted in the past few years is that when a job begins, you will be sure to have the same foreman/carpenters on your job from beginning to end- to ensure there will be no lapse in communication between start of work to completion. We know that to have a happy customer, you need to be keeping them updated, and in our third generation of doing business- it is our constant goal to have all customers walk away wanting to recommend Cortese to all their family and friends.

The worst part of the job was the lack of communication. When we asked questions or tried to ascertain information about the job we were told,"no worries, no problem", but were left in the dark as to when the work would be completed and by whom. The workers were new just about every day and one would not convey to the other what they had done. To their credit, the workers did perform quality work when they showed up. It seemed that no one knew what was going on and we felt as though we were the general contractors coordinating the job. Although we were told that the initial job would take about 3 weeks, we waited several months before they began and the job took about a year to finish. It was a very unsettling experience.
Description of Work: Originally wanted to remodel kitchen and knock down wall into dining room to connect the space. Discovered that the joists were rotted under the dining room and then needed to rebuild that room from the foundation up. Put in new counter top, sink and lighting.
