The inspector called in a mold inspector because he found extreme evidence of mold in our attic. Both inspectors explained to us that every inch of our attic had been filled with insulation, with foam insulation sprayed in all soffits, vents, and every opening. The only area open for ventilation was the roof vent, but it had nothing to draw from. Due to this, there is a serious mold problem. The mold inspector drew up a plan for remediation at a cost of $4,158.00. We contacted Black Rock Roofing whom we had paid to replace our roof and provide Energy Star insulation. They, in turn, had us call the insulation people- Mike@Buffalo-energy.com (who are never mentioned in the invoice from Black Rock which states they will install insulation and replace our roof?) who said the roof must be leaking (after he had us take pictures and send them to him). Now he says he?s too busy to come out until sometime next week. I see a run-around and feel like a volleyball. They improperly installed the insulation and need to take financial responsibility for it. I haven?t even begun to mention the mold allergies I have and how this has affected me all these years without my knowing the cause. I was hoping that since they are so highly rated on Angie?s list, we would be treated properly, without getting the run-around. We have been cordial and accommodating, providing copies of THEIR invoices and pictures to show the mold. We even sent them a copy of the Mold remediator?s report. In every aspect Blackrock followed through with the contracted work. The cleanup around the house was as expected. I would use Blackrock Roofing again if the need arises.

+ 0 moreIt was easy to schedule the estimate, and he showed up on time. He was polite, but the price was almost double the lowest estimate out of three that I got. He was going to use the same product as the other roofers as well (which he only told me after I asked specifically). He told me that they would need to replace all the gutters in the area, as they would get damaged with the tear off process (which neither of the other two roofing companies seemed to think was a concern). Overall, I saw a lot of their signs around my neigborhood, so it was worth a call, but they're price was so much higher that I did not even consider them as a choice.
Description of Work: He came out to give me an estimate on doing a tear off and new roof for the front sunroom area of my home. I was aware of water damage and that some of the base board that the roof sits on may need to be repaired.

+ 0 moreI contacted Black Rock roofing with a difficult assignment--to perform a complete tear-off roof replacement in the middle of a Buffalo winter. Many contractors simply won't do this work at that time of year, and this particular winter was one of coldest and roughest winters in a long time. I did obtain several quotes, all from roofing companies for which I had received good reviews from colleagues. Black Rock's quote was right in the middle. I evaluated the materials to be used in each proposal carefully, assuring myself of parity and quality. I initially selected another contractor for the job based on reviews from colleagues who had recommended him, but that contractor failed to follow through. After losing several critical weeks due to this, I went back to Joe at BlackRock. After explaining my situation and the urgency of getting this job done, he assured me that he could get the job done in my time window and that he would get it done as soon as a break in weather would allow it. So I gave BlackRock the job. And, at Joe's suggestion, I put down contractor's plastic sheeting all over the attic in preparation for the job. The weather was nasty for a few weeks, and the roof was covered with snow. In mid-February, the weather forecasters were predicting a 3 day window of decent weather around 30-35 degrees, with limited precipitation. Joe was clearly watching the forecast as well, and he called me to schedule the job to fall within that window. While the snow had melted from the roof, there was still a lot of snow on the ground on day one of the job. BlackRock showed up with a HUGE crew of guys. They tarped one side of the house and went to work. They did one side of the house the first day, and the second side of the house the second day. In two days I had a complete roof replaced. And although there was some slight snow and rain while they were working, intrusion into the house was minimal. Tear-off roof work does create a lot of debris, both inside and outside the home. And with the snow, a full cleanup would not be possible immediately following the job. Nails, dirt, debris, shingles, etc. would fall in the snow and get covered. And the gutters would not be installed for a week or two after the roof. All of this was explained in advance, and Joe promised that when the snow melted, a crew would be back to finish the clean-up. BlackRock followed through on every step of this job. I know a lot about construction, and can find fault with most any job. But, there's not much I can complain about here. The job was done right, using high quality materials under difficult circumstances. The job was contracted, explained, and billed professionally with no surprises. And when the snow melted, they did come back and do a thorough cleanup. I would definitely recommend BlackRock to anyone needing a roof. I note that it is in your best interest to heed any advice to lay down plastic in the attic, as you cannot appreciate the amount of debris generated until you see it. The plastic enabled us to simply roll that debris up in the plastic and throw it away, eliminating hours of tedious cleanup. A little sweeping with a push broom took care of the rest. + 0 moreEstimate rep was professional on time and knowledgeable. The estimate they gave me was with in two to three hundred dollars of the lowest bid I got. Bbut with them I got a big company with a great rating on Angie's List. The roof was done by their own 10 person plus crew. The full tear off of two layers of old roof 6.5 tones and the replacement of my beautiful new roof all done in one day.The clean up was great, a crew came in and took all the trash away and even used a magnet to get as many of the nails as possible. I have a large koi pond right next to my house and they took all needed extra care to keep nail and roofing material out of it. Even laying down a tarp over the entire pond. If you are having a roof done these are the right guys for the job. The gutters did not go as well. They use a different company to put them up. The new gutters leaked worst than my old ones. But black rock was very good to work with on this. They came out with the other company to make sure everything was fixed correctly to the way I wanted. Very happy with black rock and would recommend them again, but have someone else that specializes in gutters do them as my new ones still leak and will have to bring them back a third time.

The reasons were many, including the following, Presentation: Mark was the only one to take the ladder off his truck and inspect the roof. He told me exactly what would be needed, and I established an instant rapport with him. Workmanship: The skill and efficiency used to perform the work was incredible. Each man knew just what had to be done, and it was done to perfection. Dave, the owner dropped by the first day to insure all was well and the crew boss, Joe had everything under control. Satisfaction: I could not be more pleased with the job Black Rock Roofing did on my home. Have received many compliments on how great it looks. The clean up was fantastic and thorough. + 0 moreBlack Rock provided a complete and thorough estimate and explanation of the work to be performed. We were especially impressed when their representative asked who else we had contacted for estimates - instead of bad mouthing the competition, he complemented them and said they did excellent work - we would get a great roof no matter who we chose. That's a sign of a business that is confident in their own workmanship! Unfortunately, our early, nasty, and lingering winter delayed the start of the project from late Fall to early Spring. The first break in the weather, however, and Black Rock contacted us and scheduled the work. The workers arrived early, and stayed late - they put the finishing touches on as the sun went down. Two days later, and the gutter guy came. While the roof looks fantastic, the gutter job seems especially well done. I can't believe what a difference the new gutters make when it rains, and they look nice as well. In fact, between the thicker shingles and new gutters, it is sometimes hard to hear when it rains! The only hiccups were minor. Since Black Rock came when there was still snow on the ground, they had to come out and clean up twice - we were still finding a lot of spikes and nails after the first go- through. After the second pass, when things had melted and died a bit, we have not found so much as a staple. They even noticed before we did that they had damaged a screen. - and had it repaired and put back in just two days. Neither they or we noticed that some damage had occurred to an exterior floodlight, however, until a month later. When I contacted them, they had a crew out within a week to repair it, with no argument on their part. We are very satisfied, and after two months of having the new roof, including some extreme winds, everything seems to be in great shape!

+ -1 moreereContracted the 3-day job back in February, and were one of their first jobs of the season. Crew came in the day before to tarp the attic and garage?arrived promptly the next morning and worked 13 hours the first day on half of the roof. By lunch the area looked as if a bomb had gone off, but all was cleaned up before the crew left. Next day rain threatened in the afternoon so they completed the garage. On day 3 they tarped and protected the house on our other side because our properties are very close together. The crew worked another 12 hour day, making sure all bits and pieces, nails and other debris w removed. After the weekend, another crew returned to clean the attic and garage and removed a satellite dish the roofers forgot to take down. Both before and after clean-up crews were polite, prompt and thorough. Roofers were, for the most part, polite?except for some of the language used. Neighbors, although positive about the clean up and our beautiful new roof, did comment on hearing too many vulgarities.
Description of Work: Tore off four layers of old roof on house and garage, replaced with new decking and new shingles.

I had not expected to have to replace this 2 1/2 story roof; but after a November storm, many shingles had blown off and knew that the roof had to be replaced before winter. I also had concerns about a driveway that had just been put in. Black Rock arranged their schedule to get this work done while also protecting the driveway. I am grateful to them especially after the bitter cold weather we have experienced lately. I would definitely recommend Black Rock Roofing. Thank you to them.

+ 3 moreWe were very pleased with the work done by Black Rock Roofing. We contracted with them to replace the windows, siding, fascia and gutters and to cover all exposed wood with aluminum trim. The crews who replaced the windows were very efficient and polite and completed the installation in a timely manner. The rest of the project was completed quickly - within 2 1/2 weeks and without interruption. For a part of the time, even David, the company?s owner worked on the job. All of our questions were addressed and our requests were complied with, even those made while the job was underway. The siding and trim work looks great!
Description of Work: In the summer, 14 windows and a patio door was replaced with Kolbe windows and trimmed out. In addition, siding, gutters, soffits and exterior trim were removed. The house was then wrapped with Tyvak, covered with 3/4 inch insulation board and resided. Soffits were replaced, gutters installed and trim boards covered with aluminum.

I am not one to offer praise as a general rule, but these people earned it.We solicited quotes from three highly rated companies (Angies List and the BBB) and found them all to be very competent and professional in their analysis and presentations. Our decision to choose Black Rock Roofing was based on the thoroughness of the overall proposal (including price and materials to be used (The skylights were a major concern) The Representative, Joe Ruminski was very knowledgeable, and explained his quotation in detail, so that we were comfortable in knowing our concerns were addressed .Their reference list was very impressive.and extensive.as well. The job was done on time and the work actually exceeded our expectations.Every unexpected problem was addressed professionally and resolved the right way (not the cheapest way).Our property was totally protected and cleaned up before they left the jobsite The finished product drew comments from neighbors and also the professional way both the work crews conducted themselves during the duration of the project.. Any issues which we found after the job was finished were immediately addressed by Joe or Chris Paolini (the Customer Service Rep) to our complete satisfaction. + 0 moreI am very pleased with the whole experience from the initial bid to the end result. I had 3 of the top rated Angie's List roofing companies out to bid the job and I was most comfortable with Black rock when I evaluated what was proposed. The crew is rained and friendly; they didn't mind the occasional intrusion of me being on the roof looking things over. I rarely trust anyone other than myself to do work on my homes but this wasn't a one man job and they certainly brought enough guys to get it done fast and correctly. They brought in two highly motivated crews: First they setup shelters for landscaping and tarps to protect the house, they had the old shingles off in a half hour and started on the plywood immediately after. I needed to finish installing bathroom fans that I had started in the attic, but needed roof access to get to the back of the unit because I had to install them so close to the soffit; their crew accommodated my requests access to those parts of the roof first and they never broke stride while doing so. The second crew rolled in about 4 hours later, after the roofing crew was done making a mess. All the proper gear was brought in to make sure non of my property was damaged; trailers, not dumpsters were used and they raked/picked and magnetized the entire premise two or three times to remove all debris. You can tell that both crews took pride in their work.

+ 2 moreOwner, David Bly, provided detailed explanation of work and was true to his word. Crew arrived on time; work completed in 1.5 days. Clean up was completed with no damage to grass or shrubs; only a few nails but they came back to clean up. David was on job sight everyday. He returned 5 days later with Mike, his lead Foreman, to check that roofing tiles were settled properly; Mike added some extra touches to vent seals and peak tile. New gutters were installed 5 days later. Look great! David gave me the Pro style tiles at no extra charge. Chose Black Rock Roofing out of 3 estimates because they gave me the best price for the job required and David was honest and forthright throughout the entire process. I would recommend Black Rock Roofing to anyone considering roof work. July Update: 7/1/14: Mike removed seedlings from gutter drainage port; he checked all 4 sides gutters and removed additional seedlings. While he was on roof, Mike did a walk through to check new roofing installation from June, 2013. All was well. I had various questions and Mike provided me with much information that will keep me vigilant with my new home. He gave me referrals for: masonry work with a company Black Rock Roofing is affiliated with; also window metal trimming/ painting and energy efficient door installations/ repairs. I will be calling Dave ( owner of BLack Rock Roofing) for some estimates before winter. Thanks, Mike, for your good and thorough work today and going the extra when you didn't have to (clean gutters). Appreciate your knowledge and work ethic.
Description of Work: Single ranch brick home. Complete roof tear off, one layer. Removal of roofing vent and replaced with plywood; 3 soft spots required plywood replacement. New colored multi-vented soffits installed. Old gutter system removed. July Update: 7/1/14: Mike came out to secure a shingle, soffit, panel vent that shifted from last June installation. He also checked gutter leakage observed during a flash rainstorm on 6/12/14. Results: Gutter was clogged with helicopter seedlings. Gutters cleaned in spring (April). Seedlings finished falling 2 wks, ago.

+ 0 moreMike and his crew did a wonderful job. From start to finish, you could tell that they knew exactly what they were doing and it showed in the quality and finished product. Extra time was taken by Mike to correct existing problems with water leakage around the chimney. The owner (Dave) appeared at the job site in the morning and was there at the end of the day to inspect the job. The clean up crew did an excellent job in making sure that the property was back to its normal appearance. All the old shingles, nails and plywood had been cleaned up. In less that 12 hours the house had a new roof and the clean up was complete. I wish I had know about Black Rock Roofing before I had the roof replaced on our first house by a well known roofing company from Orchard Park. No comparison. I can't say enough about the job that was done and Black Rock's commitment to excellent service. Thanks you all.

I don't know how many men they have. It must have been close to twenty to thirty people. They completely ripped off the old roof and put down a new underlay on it and then put on the new roof. They did a very good job in cleaning afterwards. I would recommend them.

+ -1 moreIn general it went OK. Had some issues where Black Rock Employees did not communicate with each other and some scheduling got mixed up also had a couple of leaks that had to be repaired. In the future I would consider using Black Rock but I would also talk to at least two more contractors.

+ 1 moreI met David Bly as a result of visiting the Home Show. He came to my home and we talked about the work to be done. I told him I would get three estimates and decide. He was more than okay with that. He asked who were the other companies and I told him. I was very impressed by how complimentary he was about his competitors. When he submitted his estimate, I decided to have his company do the work. We settled on a May 1st start with work to be completed by May 15th. Due to some weather delays on previous jobs, the work started a little bit later. That was okay. David told me it would take 8 working days. It actually took 13 days.The house looks fabulous, but the best part of this experience was Dave's crew. They were professional, worked well together, friendly, respectfully and professional. It was a delight having them around. Dave always returned phone calls in a timely manner, answered whatever concerns and was always respectful and professional. I would highly recommend this company to my neighbors and friends. Great company!!
