Urban Arborists Inc

Tree Service, Landscaping, Pavers and Hardscaping,

About us

Award winning. Bill Logan founded Urban Arborists to care for trees and shrubs where they matter most: in cities and suburbs, where they are often people's chief link to the natural world. Throughout the tri-state area, from backyard gardens in Bed-Stuy, to Manhattan townhouses, to cathedral and museum grounds, to New York City streets, to Westchester homes and estates, Urban Arborists brings the highest standards of knowledge, attention and care to the woody plants that transform lots into landscapes, yards into gardens, streets into groves. When people ask us what we do, we say, "We do everything and anything for trees and shrubs. We plant them, we prune them, we treat and fertilize them, we design with them, we teach about them, we advise on their health and well-being, we assess the reasons for their failure, and when it is necessary, we safely remove them." We insist on this broad approach for two reasons: First, it means that we know and understand - not only from education but from first-hand experience - the whole life cycle of the plants for which we care. Second, it means that our work is varied and engaging. Like good farmers, we follow tasks from season to season and from landscape to landscape. Because we treat gardens as living beings, they pay us back with work that keeps our interest and stimulates our continual learning. We look with our customers at the whole fabric of their gardens, their landscapes, their streets. We see where the light and the wind come from. We assess what companion plants may help or hurt a tree or shrub's resistance to antagonists. We look at the results of past care, of new construction, of any and all changes in the local landscape. We test the soils both on the spot and in the lab. We go over each tree or shrub from root to crown to see what is living with it and what may be feeding on it. When a crew from Urban Arborists is pruning neglected trees, they do not simply follow a job sheet. They aim to make the trees as safe, as healthy and as beautiful as they can possibly be. As one client wrote, "My wife and I work at home. We tried to ignore the pruning, but in the end we stopped even pretending to work while we watched your men. It was like a ballet or a circus, only in the end it brought us these beautiful trees." Additional e-mails - bill@urbanarb.com, laura@urbanarb.com, beth@urbanarb.com, George@urbanarb.com. Award winning. Additional address - 522 State St, Brooklyn NY 11217.

Stay away from them ! They came to trim two trees. Then they left to buy some supplies, then came back and decided to rearrange their setup, then started talking to the neighbors, and after 2 hours of this non-sens, they left without talking to me. The job was supposed to last for a couple of days. They charged me for $5k and never did the job !!! I left several messages, sent emails, they never contacted me back. They have a terrible job ethic, and awful customer service. Now I have to take legal action against them to recover my $5k. So, again, stay away from them !

Every interaction with this Company was difficult and very expensive. They are very difficult to get in touch with, and scheduling is impossible (to get one tree diagnosed and then treated it took me months). The only person I regularly heard from was the billing department. Even though they had my credit card on file this woman hounds you for treatment charges - meanwhile nobody else is getting back to me about actually DOING the treatment. Overall this experience was unpleasant, felt very unprofessional, and I would absolutely not recommend this company.

I had to call several times to receive a response. When a time was scheduled for a consultant to look at the garden, she arrived late. I had to send reminders to receive an estimate, and then the I received omitted cost of the tree pruning. I then responded by email and telephone that I would like to move forward with some of the work and I never heard back from them.

Laura was friendly and helpful. It was a little dodgy getting our timing aligned to have her give an estimate, but it all worked out in the end and we have a lovely little cherry tree which really perks up the front of our house and our whole stretch of the block, really.

It went terrible. I never received anything including the diagnostic materials he promised.
Description of Work: Minimum of 2 hours and charged $175.00 per hour and a total $350.00 for work not performed. He came out and looked at the trees and penalized me for the distance. I live in queens and he said to come to queens it would be a minimum of $175.00. He never sent information that was promised not did he honor a 10% discount I was promised.

There were several serious issues. 1. We paid them for stump removal. They knew we needed the stump ground, in order to plant a new tree. To my surprise, no one from Urban Arborists even supervised the job to make sure the workers were doing the job correctly. Today, the tree planters arrived with the new tree. They cannot plant the trees. Parts of the stump remain right at the surface, and there are large roots all around. We had somoene experienced in stump removal take a look. They said the job wasn't done well. They said the stump is so high, we will not even to be able to plant grass there, much less a tree. 2. They left a mess. Chips and wood chunks strew all over our lawn, on our porch, on our patio. Even worse, our neighbor's property was full of chiops. I called the office. They sent the workers back. The workers were angry, and did not do a good cleaning job. (I am told that good tree grinders erect a barrier to keep chips contained). I went over to my neighbor's yard, and spend well over an hour manually picking up chips on his lawn. Urban Arborists did give us a 10% discount from the original price for the trouble 3. I called and asked why there was no supervisor present while the stump was being removed. I asked if they PLANNED TO CHECK to see if the job was done right. They did not respond. THEY NEVER EVEN CHECKED THE JOB. 4. THEY DID NOT CHECK TO SEE IF THERE WAS A GAS LINE. THIS IS THE CITY LAW. WE FOUND OUT THERE WAS A GAS LINE RIGHT UP TO THE TREE STUMP. Thank God Ted Krump of Bear Tree Service advised us to make sure the city marked out where the gas line ran. We could've all been blown to bits. We just told them that they need to come back and grind the stump down correctly. At first, they refused. I told them we want a refund, so that we can have the job done correctly. They refuse to issue a refund. Finally, I got an email asking if we would like them to check the stump. I'm not sure what to do. At this point, I would not trust them to do the job correctly...
Description of Work: They were supposed to grind down a tree stump and roots so that a new tree could be planted.

I applied for a street tree through 311 (the million trees initiative) and was denied due to the presence of sidewalk utilities in front of my house. I contacted Urban Arborists and asked them to try to get a tree approved. They were able to secure the appropriate permit, consult on and source a tree, and install the tree. In order to install the tree they had to cut the concrete sidewalk to expand the existing tree pit. They took care of the entire process from permitting to installation and did a nice job. It was a little on the expensive side but overall I am very satisfied.

I sent an inquiry to this provider through Angie's list requesting them to contact me in regard to some pruning of my 86 year old Alzheimer's stricken mother's 40+ year old Holly trees/bushes. This initial inquiry was sent on 6/20. After 10 days had passed with no response, I sent them a second inquiry, again through Angie's List, on 6/30. To date, I still have not received any response to my inquiry, not even an acknowledgement. This is not a review of the quality of their work as I have no idea what that may be. This review and rating is strictly related to their responsiveness and professionalism (or lack thereof in this case on both counts) as I have noted in my ratings (all other areas are noted as N/A). I will not try and hazard a guess as to why they did not contact me back as I do not know what is in their heads or hearts. But not responding or acknowledging either of two communication attempts is unprofessional in my opinion. I hesitate to add this but I feel compelled just out of common decency: If you believe the job is too small or you are too busy at the moment, regardless, if someone reaches out to you, twice even, common courtesy dictates you at least acknowledge the communication, even if it is to say you are unable to help at this time. But as the primary caretaker of two parents with Alzheimer's for 10+ years I have to add that it is hard enough dealing with the disease and trying to keep your parents healthy and safe...to not even receive the common courtesy of a response just pours salt in already difficult wounds. I am trying to help give my Mother whatever beauty I can in her remaining time and I understand if you are unable to assist, but at least respond...it is the decent, human, thing to do. The last part of my review may be coming off as emotional but I believe it is very important. I watched my parents treat everyone they came across with respect and courtesy my entire life and when another individual does not, I believe it speaks to them, not just professionally, but on a personal level and if you are not respectful personally, then I believe it is unlikely you behave respectfully on a professional level. The first inquiry I understand could be missed or pushed aside momentarily, things happen...but the second? I believe it would behoove us all if we made a point to work with people that are courteous and respectful just as we should be to others. Who you are on the inside pervades your outside actions. If you are a decent, courteous person, you will do decent, respectful work.
Description of Work: This provider did not perform any service as they never responded to either of my inquiries.

The crew showed up right on time. They were careful to cover all the surfaces, since all the plants and materials had to be brought through the house to the backyard. Bill had recommended several small trees that would act as focal points and some evergreen under plantings--all of these were planted, the old shrubbery hauled away, the leaves raked (!) and all the walks were swept. I could not have been happier with their service.
Description of Work: We wanted to have our garden reworked after losing a lot of shrubs and flowers to the brackish water flooding of Sandie. Bill from Urban Arborists came out to Hoboken, surveyed our garden (typical HOB set up of long, skinny backyard) and made some excellent suggestions.

A professional crew, were careful to do clean up after pruning, also laid down carpet to get out back so that they didn't drag anything into the house. The head arborist, Bill, came out with the crew to give opinion on some fruit trees that didn't flower last year. All told, the entire job took just over 2 hours.

They were professional, courteous and even did a quick additional pruning on our neighbor's tree. Urban Arborists did excellent work and I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We needed to prune and shape a 30' mulberry tree that had been neglected for many years. Urban Arborists came to inspect the tree and made it clear that they would work to take our neighbors' concerns into consideration and provide the best pruning for the health of the tree. They provided a quote and we scheduled an appointment. They sent a team of three guys who arrived on time and spent three hours pruning and cleaning up all of the branches.

The tree needing trimming was growing in my neighbors yard and blocking my windows. The neighbor hired her own tree trimmer who completed the work.
Description of Work: I sent email describing my issue / service needed but I never heard back from vendor. I placed a phone call to the vendor and I was told there was a minimum charge for any work. I forget the exact amount but it was out of bounds for my small job (trim one tree). I suggested this mimium charge be posted in the description on Angie's List so not to waste time / effort etc.

He took samples of the soil that he will use to recommend a program to return the trees to health (or replace them). He asked questions agbout fertilizing and watering schedules and made suggestions for the specific plant types. We are looking forward to his recommendations. He seemed knowledgeable but the cost of the service is not inexpensive. We will better judge the results once we have his recommendations.

Urban Arborists advertises a free consultation. So on 05-17-2013, I called them at 09:10 hours to schedule a visit. I was routed to voice mail and left a message with the details of my reason for asking for an estimate. By 10:15 I had not heard back from Urban Arborists. Since I had to leave the house for a while, I again called them at 10:15 and was once more routed to voice mail so I could again repeat my message. When I returned home at 13:00 hours there was a message on my answering machine asking that I return the call. I did so an spoke to Eliza. She informed me that what I wanted was not an estimate but an assessment and for that there would be a minimum charge of three hundred and fifty $350..00 dollars. Since this exercise in semantics struck me as a sleazy "Bait and Switch" tactic typically employed by disreputable contractors, I made the decision not to follow up with an on site appointment. Now I will either go to a free and reputable USDA Extension agent or my local store for a consultation.
Description of Work: Returned my call and tried a "bait and switch" service which I did not accept.
