STAY AWAY, SERIOUSLY TERRIBLE SERVICE!! I don't take any pleasure in writing bad reviews but the service I received from Dorwin was some of the worst I've ever experienced and I'd be remiss if I didn't warn other Yelpers in advance. I live in Los Angeles but still own and manage a property in New York. A tenant told me that her bathtub wasn't draining so I went looking for a plumber. I found Dorwin on Yelp and the reviews were great so I gave him a call. He quoted me a price of $90 to snake the drain. That's more than I usually pay but I just wanted the job done right and in a timely fashion so I agreed. I set up a day and time for him to go by the unit that worked for my tenant. The day arrived and he was over an hour LATE. He gets there, does something (I'm still unclear on what he did but my tenant was there and she assured me he never actually snaked the drain) and goes on his way. He calls me and tells me that it's done and I let him know I'd mail him a check. He didn't know I was in Los Angeles and for some reason it was a real issue for him that I wasn't in New York (apparently we don't all live in a global economy). He told me it would be $150, I mentioned that he said earlier it would be $90, he doesn't bother explaining the price difference but agrees that I can pay him $90, as if he was doing me a favor by charging me the price we'd both agreed on. My tenant called me an our later and said she'd taken a shower and there was no difference at all. I called Dorwin and told him and he refused to go back until he was paid. I have no problem paying for services rendered but I don't believe in paying for work before it's done. I tried to work with him, it's 2014 and he is a business. If he accepted credit cards or Paypal I could pay him the same day but he needed a check. He agreed to come by again, I assured him that I would pay him. This has never been an issue with any other work I've had done in the building so I was incredibly frustrated. What business has such a problem receiving a check in the mail? He agreed to come by twice more and blew my tenant off and didn't show up because he hadn't yet been paid, even though I've explained more than once that I won't pay until the job is done. It's gotten ridiculous and needless to say I've already told him not to bother, I'll find someone else. Dorwin was unprofessional, surly, late, tried to overcharge me and didn't perform the service he was supposed to. It's important to me that things be done right the first time which is why I'd never use this service again and I'd advise others to stay away as well. BUYER BEWARE!
Description of Work: He was supposed to snake a bathtub drain, not exactly sure what he did since my tenant told me he didn't snake the drain.

Trumpet Emergency Plumbing was recommended by a handyman working for me in Brooklyn. Darwin said he would charge $90 for the service call, which is more than is listed here. Darwin showed up about three hours after the call, which was fine with me. He cleared a slow draining tub and cleaned up nicely after himself. I called him again on January 17th to clear a slow draining septic pipe in the basement of my building and he said he would be at the building "this afternoon." I called him at 5:30 PM and he told me he felt the job was too big for him. I asked him why he didn't call me earlier (as the store in the building from which he would gain access to the basement would close at 7 PM and I needed to have the problem solved ASAP).Darwin said he was just looking for my number. I will keep him in mind for small jobs.
Description of Work: He snaked the drain pipe of an old cast iron, pedestal tub.

He didn't know what the problem was, he thought he knew, but he wasn't sure. He thought maybe it was a valve problem. The service man called another friend in the business, who was able to assist in diagnosing the problem and that man ultimately fixed the water heater. I ended up paying $120 to the other company, who did fix the water heater.

I went with Darwin to his supplier on Atlantic Avenue and Albany Street to replace the expansion tank, and the price was really reasonable, which is why he brought me there. It was a really freaky thing, a pinhole leak in an expansion tank flooding a basement, but that's what happened. All Darwin had to do was unscrew the tank, put teflon tape in, and screw it back on. It seemed so simple, yet for quite a while we both could not figure out what the problem was. I liked him so much I will use him again for sure.
Description of Work: I had water everywhere in my basement and no apparent leak. I called Darwin, he was there within the hour. I had shut the water for the whole house off, and after testing we discovered there was a pinhole leak in the expansion tank for the hot water heater that was splaying water everywhere.

Darwin has visited our apartment more than once. First, we asked him to assess our washer/dryer requirements - we were adding a condenser dryer to a place that had previously used a vented dryer so needed a pipe splitter that would allow for two holes where there had been one. Darwin did not know this, but charged us for the call anyway. We called Darwin back to fix a clogged drain. He was there for over an hour and though the drain was cleared when he left, it clogged again just days after his visit. We gave him an opportunity to return to fix the problem but he informed us he would have to charge for this visit, though we were repeat customers and it was his error. He is a very nice man who was formerly a super and that is really where his experience lies. He is not a skilled or experienced plumber.

Two plumbers showed up the same day, which was nice, but they were there for 13 minutes and charged me $175. At first they said $190 and I quickly said, 'What!'. Quickly they said, "Okay, how about $175?". Both of them were standing there giving me different stories about how the costs broke down, then one went into the hall. The guy remaining told me I should have called the phone number on the receipt they gave me because they would have charged me less as opposed to having gone through the Angie's list to call them. I told him it was the number I used and showed him my phone history to prove it. He then told me it couldn't have been the same number... that, that is why they were charging me more, because they have to pay for the web service fees. None of it made sense. And to top it all off he tried to smooth things over by telling me not to worry about it and just call the number on the receipt the next time (the same number I did call). There won't be a next time. Oh, they also told me the replacement part was brand new but unless it had been in a box with a bunch of rocks rolling around is was not a new part. The toilet is still working but don't expect honesty from these guys. My mistake was that I didn't ask upfront for an estimate.... before they did the 13 minutes worth of work. But maybe I'm also just not familiar enough with the going rate for plumbers. Am I crazy in thinking I received back service?

He has been giving me the run around. He has yet to fix the faucet properly. He is now dodging my phone calls. He claims that it was fixed when he left. Darwin Trumpet was very prompt, very quick, and did a fine job. It was fairly straightforward. After I'd made my emergency appointment, I remembered to read the reviews (they mostly good ones) and hesitated (because of the very bad ones), but instead of canceling, I called him on it - obviously a sore spot or something personal ? and kept the appointment, as he'd won service awards and it seemed unfair to doubt him based on 2 bad reviews out of scores of reviews. He had to buy some new pipe, for which I never saw the receipt (which is OK, he is entitled to a markup) but when it was done ? the job took about 35 min start to finish ? he gave me a bill for $150. I wouldn't have had a problem paying this much - after all, it was an emergency, and he came straight away ? but he advertises as $45/hour. I ended up paying $125. I liked him, I'd use him again, but I would negotiate the cost up front and figure out how to handle material expenses (I had asked him on the phone if he charges by the hour and he said yes).

I called him on a weekend and he showed up within two hours. He found out I had some pipe heaters that were rusty and not working and that was the reason why the pipes froze. He was with a guy that does the building work. They quoted me $750 for the work. I accepted and after they finished they said the "internal" work was an extra $200. The pipes froze again a couple of weeks later and they tried to charge me again. I refused and they fixed them anyway. However, they ended up putting the heating tapes that had failed in the first place, after badmouthing them during their first visit. Also, they broke a few pieces of the aluminun siding and just put them back in place with some hastiliy applied sealant in between.

Darwin came by very quickly after I called on a Saturday morning. He concluded that the relighting mechanism had become corroded and no longer functioned properly (and he showed me the various signs of this so I could see for myself). He and his partner spent a couple of hours driving around to plumbing supply stores trying to find the correct replacement part, but it was nowhere to be found. They managed to set up a temporary solution that got our hot water back up and running, and offered to come by to replace the part once the part could be found, at no extra charge. The cost for the visit was higher than projected due to all the work that was done searching for the replacement part, but I couldn't really complain about that.

At first it all seemed to go well. He was prompt and courteous, he replaced the main pipe under the sink and repaired the faucet in the bathroom. The tenants moved a month after the repair and the apartment remained vacant for 60 - 70 days. Shortly after the new tenant moved, there was water dripping from my ceiling (I live directly below). When I went upstairs to investigate, I discovered that the main pipe leading from the sink had separated at the elbow. I called him back and he was prompt but this time he was belligerent. He said he didn't have to come back after all this time, that it was a new problem for which he wasn't responsible. My reply was you're saying that your work shouldn't last for 6 months? He begrudgingly "fixed" the pipe again. This morning I woke up to the steady stream of water flooding my kitchen yet again (it's been 30 days). When I went to investigate lo' and behold...the same pipe had simply fallen out again. The tenant isn't running a factory up there, it's normal usage, his repairs should be able to withstand 30 days of use. So displeased by the quality of this work and his work ethic. Do not use this man, I will be calling the better business bureau.

First one arrived and he did not seem to know what he was doing. He could not fix my stove and, in the process, he broke my water heater. After these stuges left in abject failure, they had the audacity to ask for money instead of offering to replace the water heater. They said that I owed them $95 after quoting me $42 over the phone. Very frustrating. I called to make an appointment to fix a leaking shower and faucet and was happy to hear he was able to come between 12 and 1 the next day. 1:30 rolled around with no show so I called. He apologized that his job was running late so he asked if 3:30 was ok. I said fine. At 3:35 or so I get a call that he would like to reschedule to the following day at 12:30 (Saturday) since he had a job in the city that day anyhow. A little annoying but fine. Saturday he was a no-show. I waited around until 1:45, finally giving him a call to see when he could be expected. Surprise surprise, he would like to reschedule for Monday as he was having work done at his own house. He could have let me know when he knew he wasn't going to make it (over and over again). At least he did answer the phone and apologize.

Darwin answered by mobile phone when I called, gave an estimate, and scheduled the job for the next morning. He arrived promptly, replaced the shower pipes/faucet in two hours, arranged for a tile workman to make an estimate to repair the wall. He took care to only break the tiles necessary to replace the damaged pipes and provided transportation for the tile workman to deliver his supplies. He cleaned up and carried away his trash.
