Description of Work: The company did three separate projects for me. All of the work was done on a timely basis. Tom was very neat. There was little cleanup that I needed to do. I love the results. I thought his prices were fair. Tom rebuilt a shower surround, demoed and rebuilt a small bedroom closet and laundry room.

Description of Work: They sheet rocked, painted and did flooring. They are more like handymen, then high end professional workers (you get what you pay for) this is a luxury condo which I rent - so the job is acceptable. if I was living there myself I would not be happy, but if you have a plain place, or a house you rent, and are looking for a OK job - then they are fine. If you are expecting quality craftsman, who do a seamless top notch job, with all the finishing touches, they are not for you.

Description of Work: I bought an Angie's List daily deal for a bathroom/shower tile redo. The provider was originally good at communicating and came by to assess the situation. He let me know that in order to fix the shower floor tiles, I would need to track down the shower wall tiles as well so we could replace the bottom row as a part of the redo. The contractor was unable to track down the tiles, so I went looking. It took a while to track down the wall tiles, but I finally did a month or so later. I bought the needed tiles and materials to complete the job. When I called the contractor back to schedule the work, they were completely unresponsive. I've left numerous messages with no response. I've held off giving them a bad review, but enough is enough. We're 6 months later and they have my money and I still have a messed up shower floor.

Response from Ditmas Park Renovations LLC
The customer purchased a "grout restoration" coupon from us, not a "tile redo". When I got there I inspected what he wanted me to do and explained that I can just replace the missing grout but there is an underlying issue that will just cause the grout to crack again. I then explained what it would take to fix it and we agreed that we would use his coupon towards the project. We have been playing phone tag for about a week now. I think this negative review is un justified.

Description of Work: I had two of my bathrooms grouted and caulked by Thomas. He did a very nice job and spent time explaining the process. I also liked the fact that he told me what might needed to be repaired in the future. While he was explaining the work he was not pushy about using his company. It seemed he was genuine and wanted to make sure I got the work done properly.

UPDATE 9/21/2012: Company Response: First of all in my professional opinion it is physically impossible to paint a large 2 bed 2 bath apartment in one or even two days with 2 people. This statement is inconsistent with Mr. Laurenson?s comment over the phone (after he inspected the apartment) and later confirmed in his E mail to me in which he stated that he was confident that the work could be completed in two days. This was also consistent with my previous repainting experiences. (See my original report for details). Company Response: Work that was completed: Master bedroom, kitchen, master bathroom, guest bedroom. more than 80% of the living room (all that was left was 2 closet doors and maybe 20-30sqft of wall space). Absolutely untrue. (1) Most of the master bedroom dressing room area and about 1/3 of the living room were not finished. (My previous report has all of the details). Company Response: The reason I supposedly "sloughed off" her previous work was that not everyone works the same (this is the actual explanation I gave her) and perhaps the previous (more than 10 years ago) contractor was a bit quicker. And please note that the apartment was only one color prior to us painting it (which makes the job a lot easier and quicker). Absolutely untrue. (See my original report). Company Response: Throughout the length of us being there the member did not make one complaint about the work, her exact words were "The quality of work is great but it seems to be taking a long time". Absolutely untrue. (See my original report). Company Response: I had every one of the cover plates off prior to work being started except the ones that she instructed us not to touch because she did not want us to interrupt her Verizon Fios. As clearly stated in my original report, I was referring to the light switches, not the electrical outlets. This also happened to the people who submitted the other report with an F rating. Company Response: Her accusation that we did not cover her property properly is completely bogus. every piece of furniture (couches, TV, cabinets, bed, etc.) was covered with a plastic drop cloth which was not removed until the final day. Another fabrication. (See my original report). Company Response: My painters had enough materials however they did run out of tray liners but this is not uncommon so one of the crew had to make a quick trip to the store, and at which point the member then sent my other crew member out to the store as well in turn leaving no one working. I firmly stand by my description in my original report of what happened regarding the above. The painters arrived (at 9:45 a.m.) and immediately realized that they did not bring enough liners. Company Response: Eight hours was the deal that was purchased however due to building restrictions the operational hours are only 9am-5pm which with a 1 hour lunch brake leaves 7 working hours, (the member had requested that my crew not take a lunch brake so she could get her full 8 hours, I told her not only is that immoral its illegal. She also was trying to have my crew stay later than the building allowed which could possibly get my company a bad reputation with the building board/manager. Her response to that was "Don't worry I will take the blame"). I never spoke about any "business problems" with the member, all I told her was that we are coming from the middle of Brooklyn going to the middle of Manhattan and there is traffic, even when we left early we were still late due to traffic. I firmly stand by my comments in the original report regarding asking the super for permission. Company Response: At no point did I ever nor would I ever refuse to answer any questions that a customer would have, and for her to accuse me of lying is complete deformation of my character! First: My accusation of prevarication did not refer to refusal to answering questions, but to the supposed ?deal? he claimed he would have given me. (See the details in my original report). Second: In regard to answering questions, Mr. Laurenson would not answer directly, but would pivot. For example: When asked why he agreed to 8 hours of painting, knowing that he cannot fulfill it, he would bring up business problems, which also included traffic. Company Response: We did agree on $50/Hour for the final day in which the work would have been completed, had she allowed my worker to work. However the night of making this agreement me and my business partner spoke about the situation and agreed that we will only charge her a flat rate to make her happy and get the work finished. Now in my opinion, even if it is a surprise, getting an additional discount is a great deal and any rational person would have been happy. The reason for my ""silly and irrelevant" analogy was to hopefully make it more understandable to her (by changing the context of the savings). Even if you were given the option of a) pay the full cost or b) pay the discounted rate, Why would you ever choose a? (In my mind this essentially eliminates option a. ) This is not only a lie, it is irrational. (See my original report). Company Response: Contrary to what the member believes the crew at her house was the same crew that is used for all of our painting jobs (which have had not complaints before, about timing or quality of work). Then what about the horrible work and its slow pace and mistakes described in the report submitted on August 18, 2012 in which Ditmas Park Renovations received an F rating. (See my original report on this). Company Response: At one point the member tried to bribe me by saying "well if everything goes well, which it is so far, I would be happy to write a good review and send it to you first so that you can edit it as you please? My response to this was " Member I want the most honest reviews about my business" she then said "well Im not lying" First: I never said ?which it is so far? because at that point, the work overall was already mediocre and proceeding very slowly?. Also, I did not say that ?I would send him a report that he can can edit? nor did I say ?well I?m not lying?. The latter statement doesn?t make sense in the context in which Mr. Laurenson states this. Second: Accusing me of trying to ?bribe? him is libel. (See my original report on what he describes as a ?bribe?). The member was constantly interrupting my crew from working, asking if she could "peep", and stoping them from what they were doing to do something in another room. This in turn had slowed progress as well. Same excuse for the same complaint by the people who submitted the report with the F rating. Company Response: In my opinion the member just wants the work to be done for free, and she even got a full free day out of it already. Regarding the accusation of wanting all ?the work to be done for free?; how dare Mr. Laurenson say this! I do freelance work and charge by the hour. The amount of time I am spending to resolve this situation has, at this point, cost me considerably more than what I paid Ditmas Park Renovations. (See my original report on my previous, highly positive, experience with Angie?s List). It occurs to me that the slow pace of the work may have been deliberate in order to maximize the amount of money the customer pays. And the ?free day? was almost worthless. Very little was done. Also, the work that was completed was mediocre. Company Response: My crew was working a very good pace and would have had all the work done in 4 days, which is very quick for painting a 2 bed apartment where all walls, trim, ceilings and accent walls are being painted. Finished at the end of the 4th day? This time it was a single painter who arrived at 11:00 A.M. Like the people who submitted the report with the F rating, I fired Ditmas Park Renovations.
Description of Work: The following was performed: - Plastered and sanded three very small areas in which the old paint had been chipping. - Painted the interior of the following rooms: 2 bedrooms, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom The following had been started, but not completed: - The entire living room ceiling - The living room dining area. - Part of the main living room area - Part of the living room closet doors - The master bedroom dressing room area and one side of the door. - A short hall off the living room leading to the master bedroom. Neither the ceiling, the walls nor the doors sides facing into the hall were painted. Absolutely terrible. The problems with Ditmas Park Renovations were: (1) Extremely slow work, (2) Poor to just adequate painting and carelessness, (3) Lack of punctuality and (4) The refusal on the part of the owner to answer any direct questions regarding these problems, as well as prevarication. Background: My apartment is a two bedroom, two bath apartment in which I have resided since 1969. Throughout this period of time, the apartment had been repainted on several occasions using the building’s contractor. In each repaint, the work was usually completed in one day - on one or two occasions, two days. The contractor’s painters did excellent work, cleaned up after themselves and were terrific in every way. Unfortunately, due to scheduling problems, I had to find another contractor for this repaint. I became aware of Ditmas Park Renovations through an Angie’s List deal. When Tom, one of the owners, came to inspect the apartment I told him that, unlike previous repaints, several areas will not need any painting. These were: 1 bathroom, the interior of the 3 closets, most of the two foyer walls because the bookcases occupied most of the space. Therefore, since the apartment, with two painters, had almost always been repainted in one day - on rare occasions two - this should easily take one day, since there is less to repaint. Tom responded that it could take longer, then by phone and E mail, stated that “2 days should be sufficient. If not, we can work something out”. (I have forwarded this E mail to you). Please note the following: - I supplied the paint. The paint was Benjamin Moore’s Aura, which cost $60 per gallon, a thick, one coat paint. One of the painters commented that he was pleased with the paint because he didn’t need to keep going over areas repeatedly. - Prior to the painters’ arrival, I prepared the apartment for painting. I pushed furniture and objects away from the walls, took down pictures and removed everything from areas to be painted. All the painters had to do was cover everything before beginning to paint. The problems: 1. Extremely slow work: Very little was done each day. I requested that the kitchen and master bedroom be painted first. It took two days to do these rooms. Late in the second day, they were still working in these rooms and barely started the second bedroom. At the end of the second day, when Tom, one of the owners, came to pick up the painters, we discussed this and all he would say was “good work takes time”. He completely sloughed off my previous experience. 2. Poor to just adequate painting and carelessness: These were: - At best, the painting was uneven. Several areas did not have a clean ceiling line. In both bedrooms, the ceiling color ran into the top of the wall. - Areas were skipped. In the kitchen, the underside of one of the two small shelves were not not painted, as well as a small part of the wall next to the shelves. - In two rooms, the wall plates for the light switches were not removed. They were painted over, including the switch. I didn’t notice it until after paint dried. By then, the paint was so hard, I had to use pliers a few times to turn on and shut off the light. Also, the painted wall plate and switch are unsightly and will soon show fingerprints, etc. - The painters were very sloppy about covering things up. In the kitchen, where some minor plastering and sanding was done in a small area, the painter did not cover the cabinets. As a result, when I opened the cabinets, white powder from the sanding had accumulated. I will have to take everything out, clean the cabinet shelves and rewash the glasses and dishes. In addition… - The painters did not cover the television stand in the small bedroom. As a result, the television and the cable box, as well as all the TV stand’s surfaces were covered with dust. - The painters did not bring enough of the materials they needed. I had to supply them with some garbage bags and on the third day, they did not bring enough trays and had to go to a paint store to buy them. - Also, some of their garbage was left. Several water bottles, wads of tape that had been peeled off areas. In one room, the tape had not been removed from a ceiling lamp. 3. Lack of punctuality: In order to put in the 8 hours of painting per day which was promised in the Angie’s List deal and allow the painters one hour for lunch, as well as comply with the building’s requirement that contractors must be out by 5:00 p.m., the painters must arrive at 9:00 a.m. They were consistently late… arriving between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. On Wednesday, August 30, they arrived at 9:45 a.m. and then had to leave to go to a paint store to purchase trays. They did not begin work until 10:15 or 10:30 a.m. (4) The refusal on the part of one of the owners (Tom) to answer any direct questions regarding some of the problems as well as prevarication. This is what ensued: - When I asked Tom why the painters were so late every day…basically losing at least an hour from the 8 hours promised, his response was a litany of his business problems, traffic, etc. When asked why he agreed to 8 hours a day when he knew he couldn’t fulfill it, his response was more business problems. - When asked why the work was so slow, his response was that “good work takes time”. - On the plus side; . He did give me the next day at no cost. I figured they should complete it by then; however the same problem occurred…very little work was finished and by the end of the third day about 25% to 30% of the apartment remained unfinished - Tom then offered me the use of one painter @ $50 per hour for the 4th day. I initially accepted because I was desperate to get the work done and put the apartment in order before I leave for California to take care of my daughter and grandchildren. Later that evening however, I realized that, considering how slow both painters are, one painter would take at least 8 hours and I could wind up spending another $400 and - based on the previous pace of work - it was unlikely that he would not finish the work. - I called Tom’s office later and requested him to me back immediately next morning. The call was not returned. - The painter arrived at 11:00 a.m. and I told him that I do not wish to work with his company any longer and gave him the reason why. I asked him to remove the painting materials. Tom arrived and claimed that he and his partner worked on a plan late into the evening to charge me $200, guaranteeing completion. He didn’t call to advise me because “he didn’t want to wake me up”. Note that he didn’t return my call in the morning. When I expressed an initial interest, he said no, “because you sent the painter home”. Then he claimed he had an invoice for a flat fee of $200, guaranteeing completion. “Didn’t you see it”? At that moment, the painter returned with an envelope, which probably contained the invoice, and tried to give it to me. Tom took it and would not let me see it. He then berated me for not taking his offer, using a silly and irrelevant analogy of going to a store expecting to pay $400 for a coat and found it on sale for $250. “Wouldn’t you take the savings”? “Possibly, if I was aware of all of my options”. I suspect he made up that clumsy lie on the spur of the moment. Since my experience was so completely different from Angie’s List’s positive reports on Ditmas Park Renovations on, I feel that one or both of the following occurred: 1. Tom used different, more experienced and professional painters on those jobs. The two painters he assigned to my apartment were extremely young and at least one, possibly both had very little experience painting. And/or…. 2. The ‘positive’ reports were crafted by his friends, relatives, etc. I now must spend additional money to hire another painter. I hope Angie’s List can resolve this by crediting my card the $798 I paid for this absolutely lousy job and unpleasant experience. I want to stress that on all of people I hired based on Angie’s List’s recommendations, as well as the people I hired through the Angie’s List deals I used, all have been excellent. This is why I feel the positive reports on Ditmas Park Renovations may be suspect.

Thank you for the business! We are glad that you are happy with the work and that you liked our deal from angie's list. Under normal circumstances I would always check the work before saying the job is complete, however the final day I was there to close the job you had already left so I was unable to do so. I did have a senior crew member working there and he informed me that everything was to your satisfaction.

I have never been compelled to write a negative review, however our experience with Ditmas Park was horrible. My husband and I just bought our first home and we were excited to get it painted. We bought two coupons for two painters off Angies List for a total of 800 dollars hoping the two painters for two days would knock out a significant portion of our less than 1500 sq foot job. As we liked the contractors when we met them we asked them to do sand, stain and poly the living room/dining room floors as well. They told us it would probably take a week to finish but at longest they would have the single room hardwood floor sanded, stained and polyed (as well as all the painting) done before our move out date on august 7th. While the first day or two went smoothly we started to worry as the painting team were making sloppy errors that I knew was costing us time and money. To give an example, I came in one day and a painter was painting the same wall over and over again without putting a full coat on the entire room first. After I asked what he was doing, he said he did not really know. You hire painting contractors so that they ensure that the workers are experienced and the job is done well. Instead, every day I came in and found mistakes: they had painted the outlets or missed spots behind the radiators that were clearly reachable. When I told the contractor about those mistakes, he told me they would be fixed, and yet every day they were not. The contractor told us we seemed nervous, and we told him, indeed we were. After they started the floors, it seemed as if it was going to get better. The stain came out beautifully. However, in their rush to finish the job, they poly'd the floor too soon and the floor bubbled up all over. The contractor told us they would do it over for no charge (hardly a favor 10 days into a job that was estimated to take five and would take longer because of their mistake). We informed them that our landlord expected us out by August 7th (it was August 4th) and judging by the last go- round (the humidity in NYC has been really ridiculous), it would take much longer to dry. Our sweet landlord agreed to let us stay and pay day by day. We told them not to rush the job, as we would rather move in later than have the floors not dry. Meanwhile, the little painting mistakes had not been fixed including the fact that the paint going up the stairwell did not mean the ceiling. One of the painters told me, "Its really hard to reach because its over the stairs." For 4,000 dollars, that is not what i wanted to hear. The contractor came himself on a Sunday to start the work, but we got a call at 3pm with him saying that he had tried to just take the poly off instead of sanding and it didnt work and the sanding drum wasn't available. Another day wasted. August 6th they sanded and stained again. We came to see the stain, and it looked uneven, but we don't know anything about floors so we figured they would fix it. After it was poly'd, we waited for it to dry. First day, there was low humidity, so we thought it would go fast. Second day, 89 percent humidity in NYC, but they did not bring a dehumidifier although they had told us they would on any day with more than 40% humidity. The third day, we showed up and the floor wasn't dry again and they brought a dehumidifier. It was dry enough to walk on, but not to put furniture on. The painters had gotten stain all over the baseboards so the contractor said he would come himself and paint them that evening and hopefully all would be dry. He then called and said the store where he would get trim paint was closed so he would come the next morning. Why he hadn't gotten it the day before since he knew it needed to be done is beyond me. Its just one of the many things about this job that was completely baffling. The following day, August 10th, we had to move as the landlord had people moving in the 15th. We told them we would set up planks and move everything into the second level. At 12:30pm, when we were heading over to the house with the moving truck, my husband called the contractor to see about the floors. He told us that he had come to the house at 9am but forgot the key, and so left and went back to the office and was just headed back. My husband asked why he didn't call as he would have brought the key over. Now we were moving in and the baseboards had not been done and the floors were not dry. We got there and told the contractor to just stop. The floors had bubbles throughout, the sanding job was very splotchy with sections of dust under the poly, the stain was uneven and you could see spots where the old stain had not been removed. My husband said he could not justify paying for the floors and would pay for the paint job, despite its mediocrity in places. Needless to say, the floors were free, which says very little since we will have to get them redone. They are truly terrible. The one positive part of this experience was that we picked the wrong color for the kitchen and they happily painted over it, doing a great job. I just finished painting the baseboards and touching up the paint in the bedrooms and the living room wall. We are still finding spots on walls that their painters missed. I am very disappointed in this experience and could not recommend them for anything to anyone.
Description of Work: They painted our new house: living room, kitchen, 1 large bedroom and 2 small bedrooms.Sanded, stained and poly'd our living room floors.

We did nothing but try to help this customer from the very beginning. After Finishing the work for the two day coupon we normally just charge for the work left to do (in this case it was the kitchen, living area and the master bed room) however we wanted to do them a favor and since the master bed was primed so far, we only charged them additionally for the kitchen and living area. The "mistakes" they are referring to were minor touch ups that they did not even allow my crew to catch because they were scrutinizing every little thing they did. (basically not letting my crew work). The employee that she is referring to that "did not know what he was doing" was in training and had since been terminated due to his carelessness. Anytime they brought something to mine or my crews attention it was addressed immediately. As for the floors, the customer claims that they did not rush us but they were there everyday putting pressure on us to finish so in doing that, mistakes were made and we tried to correct them, but it was the same situation the second time around. The wall in the stairs that is being referred to was addressed in the proper way, we had an extension ladder on site so my crew could reach over the stair case, in one particular case I personally made touch ups there and had the husband okay it before I left and magically the next day he was some how not satisfied with it. Our crew member that was working on the floors forgot to tape the baseboards prior to staining that's why stain inadvertantly got on them, however we purchased paint and were taking care of the issue. When the husband told me to no continue anymore work there was plenty of time to take care of the remaining touch ups before the movers came he just did not want me to do them. I believe if they had given my crew some room to breathe my guys would have completed the job as they do all of our other jobs, without flaw.

I wanted to get the apartment painted prior to sub-letting and later selling. The job was handled professionally and to a high standard from first to last, from the initial phone call to the clean-up when the painting was finished. Calls & e-mails were answered promptly and efficiently, the job was arranged and done without fuss, the painters were on time and did very good work. Reasonable price, not the cheapest quote I had but not the most expensive, either, and definitely value for money. The painters knew their stuff and were friendly and attentive. I was able to come and go as I pleased and they worked around me. They didn't even mind when one of the cats jumped into a tray of paint, and they helped clean him off. The building manager, who can be quite fussy at times, was also impressed with their operations. Highly recommended, call Robert, you will be happy with his company's work.

Thank you so much for you business and we look forward to working with you again in the future!
After our contractor bailed on us and did not show up for 4 days we decided to pay the Angie's list fee and find a new licensed contractor. I came across Ditmas Park Renovations, it was a Sunday evening and thought I might just try to call to see if anyone picks up since we were very desperate. Tom picked up the phone and told me he will be in my area within 3 hours to give me an estimate (on a Sunday night!!!). He came into what will potentially be our restaurant (it was a big fat mess at the time) and started looking around. We had to fix walls, paint, fix floors, install electrical stuff, work on some stairs, take out the old sign at the front of the store etc... it was really a big fat mess. Tom said he will call me with an estimate at around 8pm, and he did.. we agreed that the work will start the next Monday or so. He said he will bring his crew in at 8am and they were actually here at 8am, unlike our old contractor who use to come in at 3pm and leave at 4am... Tom said the work will be done in 7 days and the work was done in 6 days... We were very happy with the outcome and will definitely refer this company to friends, neighbors and family!

I had Tim and his partner come in to cut some tile. They were on time,(early actually) polite and clean. They put up plastic before doing any cutting. They did a neat job. I asked them to install an air conditioner for me for a few extra dollars, and they said "sure, no problem". It was a small job, but I could tell by the way they worked that I would hire them again.

Really excellent all around. They were extremely thorough, paid attention to property protection, the estimate was clear, change orders were in writing. Tom and Rob, the owners, were on the job themselves and supervised their crew closely and the house looks fantastic. I highly recommend them. I've done this sort of work myself on this house and their work was equal or better than anything I've done here before.

Rob and Tom responded promptly for the inquiry, provided the estimate, commenced the work as promised and provided expertise. They worked neatly and obeyed all the regulations. Their crew was also polite, efficient and capable young men. They gave us the best paint job ever.
Description of Work: Painted and repaired the woodwork and trim on the house exterior, plus built a new Yankee gutter on the porch.
These guys were great. They did everything I asked and kept me informed all the way through on how everything was going. I asked them to use Ditra on my shower walls. They were not familiar with how to install it but they learned how to use it and installed it just perfectly. They took care of all the finishing work and clean up. When they left everything looked great. I'm very pleased with everything they did.
