Bill Wiener was my technician. He was very knowledgable, and professional and an over all pleasure to deal with. He even put those little booties on his feet so he didn't muck up my floors which he gets extra points for. He quickly assessed problems with both my toilets. One just needed a part and the other needed to be replaced. But he did give me the option of an estimate to fix it, instead of replacing it all together. He fixed the first toilet on the spot and we made an appointment for the next day for him to come replace my old toilet. He was on time and did the work quickly, cleaning up afterwards before he left. Plus I liked the fact that they took credit cards and worked with iPads. It made everything quicker and easier. Would def call this company again!
Description of Work: replaced one toilet and put a part in the other one.

I already have one estimate from a plumber who told me that the radiator valve is stripped and needs to be replaced (it's been patched multiple times already). That plumber gave me an estimate of $390 to replace the valve. A Good Plumber told me that simply to patch it would be $400. Then they charged me $75 for the estimate. Ridiculous.
Description of Work: Gave an estimate for a patch job on a radiator of $400, not including the $75 service fee.

Unfortunately this review is not accurate and we'd love the opportunity to address this. For the record, this customer was called a few hours after our technician was there to see what the issue was and how we can address and help her. We were rushed off the phone and told we would receive a call back. We received no call back but instead, a customer hiding behind a bad online review. The call came in for a leaking radiator angle valve. We always have a dispatch fee, which is explicitly told to all customers that this is a separate fee for a trained professional to come out and assess the problem. Upon arrival our technician diagnosed the valve as indeed dripping. As we always do, we presented the customer with options...repair or replace. Not all customers want to simply replace something that is not 100% necessary. They may want to attempt the repair first. The technician explained he was confident the repair would work if the customer wanted to try and we even give a 1-year warranty on our work. She felt like we were pushing her for a patch job, which is not the case. We were simply presenting her with option and then she could make a decision and of course presented the option of replacing as well. As for the price, this is where it is 100% inaccurate. She claims the estimate for the “patch job” was $400 plus the $75 dispatch fee. Maybe this was a misunderstanding but we have her signature on our estimate and this is a complete falsity! The estimate was $69 for the dispatch fee and $299 for the repair plus tax, which we do not pocket. It was not $400 for the repair and then the dispatch fee. It was $299 plus the dispatch fee. Her other plumber, who quoted her $390 for a replacement is actually in line with our price for a replacement which was $399. Why she chose to take this route with us I am not sure when she at least rated us punctual, responsive and professional. Maybe she was having a bad day or misunderstood us, but at least give us the opportunity to clarify or explain. I hope after reading this, she will see we were presenting her with a choice and we would have done whatever she wanted to make her happy.

He arrived when he was scheduled. I thought the problem was a disconnected or clogged drain tube from my washer dryer. Jose thought it was more likely the 2 inch drain and not the tubing of the washer. He disconnected the tubes and blew out the drain pipe without having to move the machine out of place. He then brought in a hose to be able to run hot water through to make sure there was no leakage. Total time was about 1 hour. The company has a price list on a tablet that they show you before the work is started so you can agree or not. There is a consultation fee of $109 for coming and evaluating. It was worth it. Jose was clean and wiped everything up.

Now that our renovation is finished, I am finally getting around to reviewing the plumbers and contractors that we worked with. So the reviews will be about work done in the early to mid part of 2014 We had a shower pan that had a leak, and the water spilled under the floors into the adjoining 2 bedrooms. This caused major water damage that required hardwood floor replacement of both of our bedrooms and gut renovation of our bathroom. We filed a claim with our homeowner's insurance, and they were putting obstacles in our way, making it difficult for us to get the needed funds to repair the damage. Before digging up the shower pan, they wanted proof that it was the shower pan that was leaking, not some pipes, etc. So I called the Good Plumber and Thomas came out to help us. We also called a technician from another company that deals with water damages and had access to infrared imaging device. Thomas filled up the shower pan and ran the water, while the technician with the infrared device looked for the source of the leak. After a while, they were able to see the leak originating from the shower pan. Mission accomplished. Thomas from Good Plumber was great! He was professional, extremely friendly, honest, and very knowledgeable. Their prices are reasonable, and they are very responsive. Next time we have any plumbing issues, we will call Good Plumbers before calling anyone else.

Showed up on time. Super professional, courteous, well mannered. Wore little booties over his construction boots to protect my home from dirt...which I loved. My main gripe is on the price I was charged. I was in a tough spot: House had 2 toilets. One toilet was completely clogged--second toiled was on the edge of becoming entirely unusable. This was in my elderly father's home and I needed to make sure he had at least one working bathroom. I feel that I was grossly overcharged. Bathroom had a wood floor and when they caulked the new toilet to seal it to the floor, I though the job was done a little sloppily. After a few days the caulk pulled away from the flooring and created the tiniest of gaps in a small section between base of toilet and the wood flooring surrounding waste pipe. Gap was big enough to drop a small stud earring (or even a dime) through. The issue was this: When you pay over $3000 for any type of service, you expect the execution to be flawless. I did not find it flawless. I have no doubt that if I called them back they would have re-caulked free of charge --- but I was so upset with myself that I actually paid so much money for what seemed like a pretty basic job. I didn't want to deal with the company anymore. I felt like a fool for not calling a second plumber to get a better price. Other than the sloppy caulking and the price, I think they do pretty good work. Toilets worked perfectly after they completed the job. Customer service was excellent. I didn't like the toilet seat they placed on the new toilet and they sent me a check for $30 so I could pick out my own toilet seat. My bad experience with this company may be mostly my fault---because I agreed to pay that price before they started the work. But again, I was in a tough spot. Another thing: They plumber noticed when he was clearing the waste pipe that the home had a lead water main leading into the house. Told me the lead pipe should be replaced and it was a "$10,000 job". I eventually replaced the lead water main with a different company and the entire project cost about $3400 (which included breaking through the concrete driveway and pouring new concrete.)
Description of Work: Remove and replace one toilet, replaced two working toilet shut off valves (upgraded from plastic to metal), cleared waste pipe.

I am most sorry to hear of your issues and do appreciate your feedback. The prices we charge are a fixed national price guide and comparable with many plumbing companies in the area. Yes there are cheaper and yes there are more but we charge what we mus to remain in business and all these prices are presented to our customers up front. The issue with the floor we would have gladly come back to repair it. No one is perfect and if we are not perfect, we will make it right. Unfortunately we were not given the opportunity. A wood floor flexes unlike tile, which is most likely what happened. We actually don't use caulk, we use plaster to set the toilet on a nice secure base. As for the water main, there must have been a misunderstanding. We actually first off don't do that type of work, we simply recommend to get it done and will refer a subsurface plumbing contractor. A water main, correct, is about $3500-$5000 depending on the run and breaking, etc., not $10,000 unless it is some extreme circumstance. Thank you for your review otherwise and hope we can serve you at a later time. We tell all our customers, all the little things we do differently, having excellent technicians, etc. all affect the price. I can guarantee if we hired people at $8.00 an hour and our prices were lower...almost no one would be happy with us.

Dan was the plumber - he was early on the first day (he called to say he was on his way), was very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. He was unable to do the work on that day because the valves in my apartment were broken and it would've been unsafe to do the work without shutting down the water. We rescheduled and he did the faucet replacement for me and replaced the valves for the building. He did a great job and the faucet is a much higher quality faucet than I had before. It works perfectly now with no leaks. Mariana in the office was a pleasure to work with, very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend and would use them again.

Jose came,?appeared to be?very nice, but never replaced the rubber washers for the meter that National Grid had left. I offered them to him, but he refused to use them. He began to downgrade my gas pipes, even though they still look new, and Nat Grid said my gas pipes were in good condition. I stood my ground in relaying to both Bill and Jose that Nat Grid stated that this was a simple job of replacing the sealant or compound at the pipe joint, and replacing the thermocouple. Bill told me I should wait for his father the 'master plumber' to look at everything on Monday, November 3, 2014, before they proceed to do anything else. (THAT'S A WHOLE WEEK!) The 'job', Bill stated could run me upwards of 3,500.00! Bill kept?using Jose to search?for things that was not to his perfection. All I wanted was heat from an older model Crown boiler, not for some plumbing company to pad the bill by trying to remove my pipes. I had a master plumber, who sells boilers, and owns his own?plumbing?supply store look at the boiler. I also provided him with all the extra details that Bill gave me.?The gentleman?agreed with Nat Grid.?I am upset that Bill would try intimidate an older woman such as myself into giving him 300.00 to check for a gas leak that Nat Grid had already checked. On top of all that he used titles of different people that could come to my house and cause me trouble! At present, I am sitting in a cold house, with no heat, hot water, or cooking gas, and elderly tenants, one of whom has Agent Orange. I am also raising my 14 year old grandson who has a disability. HE NEEDS TO DO THE RIGHT THING! How dare he offer to keep the 300.00 and we part as friends? He needs to complete what was started or refund my money.
Description of Work: Never performed the system maintenance that I paid for, which was 214.00. Charged 300.00 for a service that National Grid had already provided. Nat Grid tested my whole line for gas leaks, found one and shut the gas off.

At A Good Plumber, we believe in high levels of customer service and unfortunately long gone are the days where the customer is always right. We will bend over backwards for our customers and go above and beyond as we tried to do with this customer. The disregard for our reputation and diligence and unappreciated help we offered and explanations as to her problems are still leaving us all scratching our heads. While as we said we do pretty much do anything to make sure our customers are satisfied with us, we do have principals and backbone and will not simply roll over and take this undeserved treatment. We here at A Good Plumber are completely appalled by the false allegations and exaggerations in this review and if they continue or the customer continues calling, leaving these false reviews and harassing us, the appropriate legal channels will be taken. For those who want to hear what happened, we will gladly answer her points here below. She first starts by saying we never performed the service on her boiler which she paid for through Angie’s List. That is 100% correct…we cannot perform a boiler service when a customer calls National Grid for a gas leak and they shut and lock their gas meter. You cannot run a boiler with no gas nor service it. The customer called us for a routine boiler service via Angie’s List. We set up the appointment for the following week. In the, interim she called back saying she had a gas leak and called National Grid to investigate and they found a leak and shut and locked her meter. For the record, as licensed master plumber’s in NYC, we have multiple NYC codes to follow and apparently this code is the “scare tactic” she alleges. She says all we had to do is fix the leak, which is a “simple job” according to her and National Grid would come turn her gas on. That is unfortunately not how it works. Before we even set the appointment, we told her gas is very serious and we have protocol to follow and explained how it will go and gave her estimates on the initial work, permits, etc. before we took the trip out there. The protocol is to file an LAA for repair and we take responsibility for the entire gas line as far the city is concerned so we need to test the whole line. If we miss a leak and just do what the customer wants, we are completely liable. Once we pull this permit, we can proceed with our repair. At that point, we set-up a self certification inspection with NYC to come look at the pressure test and they sign off all is well and no more leaks. If they don’t show up for the inspection, we as master plumbers are allowed to do so. From there, National Grid will get notification and come unlock the gas meter. We cancelled appointments to get out ASAP for her because she told us about her elderly, veteran tenant. Upon looking and seeing the leaks, we called for our permits. I hope most people understand we need to do our own tests and not what the homeowner feels we should do because we are ultimately responsible for their safety. As we were on the line to order the permits, it turns out she has an ILLEGAL boiler and water heater not filed anywhere within the city records. We cannot order a permit to repair a line going to something that as far as the city is concerned, does not exist. When we explained this to her, obviously she was not happy. This was not a scare tactic as she alleges but we don’t make the rules…the city does. In order to correct this we told her she needed to file some paperwork to legalize the boiler. For the record our office staff helping her have never met this person and have no idea if she is 30 or 70, so by her saying we are trying to take advantage on al elderly person is a bogus claim. Upon looking at the boiler, would you believe that the same unlicensed plumber who illegally installed it without filing for it also did so incorrectly with numerous code violations that would not pass an inspection? If the city showed up to check this with our name and license verifying it was ok, we’d look like fools because we need to take responsibility for that boiler. We told her there were numerous violations and needed to be upgraded to meet the new codes. Again not our rules but the city’s. We went out of our way once again to speak directly to a city inspector to verify there was no easier way to get her gas turned on faster and to triple check this code. He said it was wrong and it had to be done and even explained why which we passed on to her. We called her backed explained this again to her and again she was not happy. She stressed urgency and we at this point suggested she may be able to find someone who can get their quicker and possibly even less expensive than us because we were already booked for the week. She decided to wait for us and we had an appointment set for this coming week. Then the review came in which left us all scratching our heads. Apparently she spoke to another “plumber” who told her were were wrong and scaring her. We will put our reputation on the line by saying: we will guarantee this “plumber” did not check and take the extra steps we did to verify the legality of this boiler and water heater and if he did it would clear as night and day we are following the city’s protocol to safely get this customer comfortable again. Obviously she is stressed and inconvenienced by having no gas to heat, take a warm shower or cook with but it was shut and locked before we even arrived…but chose to scathe us and and make these false accusations is completely appalling! We have decided in good faith to credit this customer back for the service we never did because after this review we are not going to service her. We also credited the $300 back to her for the deposit to get started on ordering these permits for her. We hope our A and even B reviews will be looked at as we proudly close in on 120 A’s as we will continue to service our customers the right way and ensure their satisfaction.

Tommy was not only extremely professional and conscientious, but also quite friendly. He actually called to ask if he could come to us a bit earlier than scheduled, which was preferable to us. Before walking through the house, he put floor protectors on his boots, so as not to track any potential dirt on the floors. He explained all he would do methodically, very thorough. He did all that's included in the Package purchased: Cleaned the burners & tray, drained water from the boiler and added chemicals to the system, tested all safety devices & valves, checked pressure & radiators. He carefully explained where he thought further work should be done, but did so in a non-pressurized way, and left us to consider the possibility of that additional work. Overall, a very positive experience. A very nice young man.

Dan, the plumber was punctual, efficient, and extremely helpful. The estimated time for the job was 3 days, but it completed in one. Other contractors were involved, and a Good Plumber was available for feedback and consultation and returned to the site after the masonry was complete to assess the final outcome.
Description of Work: I had a dry well in my backyard that create problems in the foundation of my kitchen. A Good Plumber built a trench drain for my backyard by drilling a hole through the foundation of my building and connecting drain pipe to the sewer line in my basement. The problem was a complex one, and posed a challenge to several contractors. However, they took the time to analyze the problem, proposed several alternatives, and provided me with options. The project was successfully completed.

Tommy the plumber came over on time, maybe even a little early. He was very kind and professional. He explained everything to me and didnt mind me standing over him during the whole process. He was very thorough and unrushed. He made sure the safety piping was clear which made me sleep better at night. He informed me of other work that could be done and worked with me on how and when to best get this accomplished. Tommy also gave me some advice on a dryer issue i was having. He was very friendly and professional. My wife is particular about our house and he cleaned up after himself and wore booties in the house. I would recommend this company and this plumber in particular.

1) called to have AGP come and look at a shower that was leaking down to the floor beneath it. i had already diagnosed the problem as coming from the shower fixtures and/or pipes and not the pan or drain. the first step was to replace the mixer cartridge which had a small leak. replacing this piece ($65 piece on amazon plus 15 minutes of work - its literally held in by two screws) didn't fix the issue. this is where the fun began. since the wall now had to be opened to do further forensic work, i was to be charged a ~$750 "access fee". mind you, this is to open a hole in a bog standard drywall - you could do this in 30 minutes with literally a kitchen knife (which i subsequently did). i almost fell over when i heard this. this didn't include the actual work of repairing whatever plumbing calamity might lie behind the drywall. 2) lets start at the beginning though. 3) when i spoke to bill to schedule the service he launched into a long story about how his company does things differently and they use something call "straightforward pricing" which clearly states the cost of repairs in different levels rather than (as he described it) other providers who charge by the hour or "make it up". fair enough i thought. that is why when jose (the plumber, who by the way, was excellent and professional) quoted me $554 (level 7) to replace the above mentioned cartridge i went along with it because frankly i thought it was a more involved job. when the job was done and i took a look at the "straightforward pricing" schedule, it was completely unclear why this 15 minute job was a level 7 when the exact same part (filter cartridge) was also listed in level 1 ($74). when i asked jose to call bill, i could overhear that it wasn't really clear what level this job should fall under but bill agreed - why not - that it should be level 7. noone could explain the difference in all the levels and why this job was in one category and not another. so, while "straightforward pricing" might sound good, its nothing but another gimmick whereby a provider can basically charge you whatever they want since its impossible for a layperson to understand, much less question, the different levels. i wish i could attach a picture of this schedule - its quite a work of literature. in any case, i settled on a lower price with jose - who, again, was professional, competent and in my opinion a victim of this assinine pricing methodology. 4) so bottom line: outrageous charge for opening a drywall (another provider i called charges $145), and completely non-sensical pricing scheme really designed for mostly clueless home owners. 5) i have no doubt the techs are competent but frankly if you know a bit about what you're doing, go with someone with whom you can have an educated conversation about pricing and workflow. 6) fyi: i had another (well known) plumber come and perform the repair (including opening up another piece of drywall) for $350.

Thank you for your review this is how we learn and grow to better serve our customers. Unfortunately we need to review our pricing in this instance and it was a misinterpretation on both our parts. In 4 years since implementing our straight-forward pricing this is the first time we had an issue and confusion over a shower cartridge. Usually we either replace the entire body or make adjustments not just replace a cartridge and if we do it is special pricing because cartridges range from $40-$200+. The level was looked at incorrectly and the $74 is for an in-line water filter cartridge, not shower cartridge. The part we used alone costs us over $55 so there is no possible way we can make a profit and charge $72 for it. Under our straight-forward pricing guide for bathrooms is the pricing for a cartridge replacement, which was in line with the pricing Jose originally gave. Unfortunately the general public doesn’t realize plumbing is a skill/service business and have no idea what it takes to run a business with licensing, schooling, insurances, overhead etc. so when customers begin to look at what parts costs at Home Depot, that has no basis whatsoever on what it costs us to send a clean, skilled, qualified technician to do the job right and warranty our work. Traveling to a customer, accessing, diagnostics, all take time and we are up front before we send a technician to a customer’s home that with us they good quality service and skilled technicians…maybe not for pennies on the dollar, but our Angies List and other review sites speak for themselves when the overwhelming majority of our customers see the value in our service and how we do things here. In an average day, we may do “plumbing work” for about 4-6 hours…the rest is travel, parking, diagnostics, and going over issues, concerns, pricing, explanations about plumbing, etc. with our customers. We tell everyone we are not the cheapest and not the most expensive either out there and that is a fact… but we do the job right and stand behind our work. In the newer age of computers, rather than people calling us and expressing a concern and allowing us to work it our or explain it, many people chose to run to a review site whether it be Angie’s List or someplace else and knock a system or company that is fair, honest. Like all things in life there are challenges and gray areas and we work through them with ourselves and our customers to ensure satisfaction. Straight-forward pricing is actually a patented, highly successful and fair successful system used by approximately 1,000 plumbers across North America. Once again for those looking to do business with us, there are issues in any business and nothing is perfect but once again, at the time this was written, note the 114 A’s we have and the poorer grades we can count on our hands. I can guarantee if those people had called us and allowed us to work it out, an amicable solution would have been reached. We look forward to answering any concerns or comments at any time from our customers or customers to be!

Jose repaired the drain outside by vacuuming out the sentiment that built up. In addition he cleaned and vacuumed all major pipes in the basement, as well as an outdoor intake pipe. Jose took his time explaining what needed to be done, showed me the conditions of the basement pipes that were frankly disgusting, and was very professional. He finished the job in a timely manner, and was very respectful putting booties over his shoes so as not to track debris into our home.
Description of Work: Jose Ramirez provided an assessment for an outside drain that was no longer working properly as well as inspected all major plumbing pipes in the basement and backyard drains.

I also appreciate when you make an appointment for a certain time, they call you ahead of time on the date of scheduled service, and advise if the exact time they will be at your door. Even though this seems like common courtesy and a way of doing business, not every company practices this. It's very refreshing!
Description of Work: I had issues with my toilets in my apartment and had it first serviced earlier this year. I appreciate that the issues are explained in details and that technicians are always helpful. A few months later, I was experiencing another issue with my toilets and it was analyzed/corrected very quickly. I also had another issue with my furnance during the winter and the technician was honest, advised that he was unable to service the particular furnace I have and reffered me to a company that could. I also appreciate when you make an appointment for a certain time, they call you ahead of time on the date of scheduled service, and advise if the exact time they will be at your door. Although I had to call twice in the A.M. for emergency service, the second call was promptly returned and an appointment was scheduled immediately for the same day. The appointment was even moved up earlier because the technician was available sooner. He arrived on time, was friendly and knowledgeable, explained all aspects of the job and their costs before working. He worked efficiently and neatly, and cleaned up when he was done.

In general, I found the service from Good Plumber to be excellent. The plumbers are always very through, their work is very by the book, and they would rather correct problems the right way rather than slap a band-aid on things. I have no doubt that they work they did will hold up for a long time. On the downside, I rated them a little lower on punctuality, responsiveness, and price, but I think I should explain further: Punctuality - I found that in general, the plumber didn't come at the appointed time. However, they do automatically text you when the plumber is headed your way, and they always eventually showed up. Treat your appointment time as a guideline as to when they will arrive, rather than as a set time. Responsiveness - you won't always get a plumber on the phone, but they do use an answering service, which means that you at least always get to speak to a human instead of an answering machine. In general they call back on the same day, although I found if I called near the end of the day I would sometimes have to call again. Price - as many reviews have stated, these guys don't come cheap. However, they do itemize everything and show you an estimate before they start anything. I don't have a good baseline for what the going rates are, but I did suspect that their prices are probably higher than average (especially for hardware), but again, I did feel like I was being taken care of during the whole process. We did end up spending significantly more than I was expecting on plumbing, but a lot of it was due to discovering the quirks of our 80-year-old building. Overall, for anything complicated, I would definitely use these guys again. They are patient and thorough, and not against explaining what they are doing and why.
Description of Work: Quite a bit: disconnected and terminated piping pre-demolition, installed brand new piping for a kitchen sink and dishwasher, ripped out corroded drain pipes in the bathroom, installed brand new nipples and sink in bathroom, secured a loose toilet and replaced shower neck.

Tommy was knowledgable , clearly explained my options, didn't push me to have unnecessary work done. He performed the job in about an hour to my surprise! It was perfect, working well and by the evening I had my sprinkler system up and running without a hitch. The price was expensive but you get what you pay for: quality work guaranteed.

Thank you for taking your time to review us! Sometimes, being rated in a public place can be challenging, but when you have people like yourself who appreciate and see the value in what we do, how we work, how we guarantee our work and then to express those feelings here for us is very very much appreciated and makes it all worth it. Once again it was a pleasure dealing with you and look forward to doing more work with you in the future!

At the time of inspection they were able to get a lot more work out of a simple boiler inspection. I didn't agree to the work as I felt they were already there and just get it done. However, I believe I paid a hight cost for not a lot done.

thank you for your review. while unfortunately we only have record of what was done that day, a reason for it was not put on the invoice. hopefully to put you at ease, we know our prices may be high but we are in line with many other shops in the u.s. we feel that good work, and good talent warranties, etc. all are justified in our prices because a customer gets what they pay for. we stand behind our work. the one thing i can GUARANTEE 100% is if any work was done, there was a necessary reason because you had one of our most decorated technicians in your home that day. he has been mentioned by name numerous times of angie's list ad other sites because of his honesty, skills, etc so rest assured if work was done, it was for your betterment. thank you and hopefully we will have the opportunity to serve you again.
