I had an afternoon appointment with a A Good Plumber for a Big Deal Boiler Service Call. I was told that the exact time would depend on how long the morning appointment took. The office called me several times that morning to give me a better idea of when the plumber would be at my house and the plumber called about half an hour before he arrived to let me know the exact time. He arrived at 1:00 p.m. He was neatly dressed and very courteous and professional. He said that my boiler is one of the best brands made and that the boiler itself is in good condition. However, when he saw the color of the water in the water gauge he said it was very dirty. He turned the thermostat up so the water got very hot in the system and listened to the banging and clanging. He said some of the pipes were not at the correct level. He also observed how the water rose and fell in the gauge which is not normal. He then started to empty the hot water from the boiler. It looked like mud. After it was emptied he put fresh water in, let it circulate and then emptied that. Then he filled the boiler again and added a cleanser. He recommended another treatment in about a week after the cleanser has a chance to work. He also said that the 15 lb. safety relief valve on the boiler should be changed as it was no longer in compliance with city codes and that it could be very dangerous if it ever went off and explained why. I agreed to both recommendations. Before he left he told me to call his office to make another appointment and to get a price quote on the work he was recommending.
Description of Work: Before A good Plumber came to the house I knew there was a problem because the heating system is very noisy with pipes banging very loudly and vibrating. The gas boiler was inspected. The boiler was emptied. The water was filthy and thick, almost like mud. After all the water was emptied fresh water was put in and a cleaning solution were put in and run through the system. Recommendation was made for another cleaning in about a week as the water was too dirty for one treatment to clean it. I agreed as I already knew that. The plumber also said that the 15 lb. safety relief valve should be changed as it was not up to the current city codes and could be dangerous and explained why.

There was a leak from the pipes hidden in the ceiling of the basement on 12/4/2012. I came to angieslist and called a few companies including A Good Plumber Inc -- based on the reviews I have seen. Bill Sobolow, returned my call and explained the process in a professional manner and answered all questions that I had patiently. Keep in mind that this is a family owned business and they just had a death in the family. He informed me as much and only schedule me for the 7th. Since, it was bit of an emergency I explained to him -- that I will be calling others to get this repaired ASAP. I had called Roto Rooter -- and the person who called me seemed more inclined on going home rather than coming and looking at the problem and explaining what needed to be done. Needless to say I cancelled him on the spot. There was another company that I called -- but they could not make it out there since they are part of the Rapid Response for Hurricane Sandy. I decided to stick with Bill Sobolow -- and I was glad. Warren Sobolow, arrived on time as scheduled. Unfortunately, the tenant was not home and Warren patiently waited for his return-- and understood that it was a tenant occupied premise and also mentioned the time he has to leave to make it to another appointment -- which I understood and respected. It was good that the tenant arrived before that to give him access to the basement. He reviewed the issue and informed that the water is warm and thinks its heater pipe leak. He informed me that, he would need to access the pipe and explained me the cost. I agreed and he went on to access the leak and repair it. He also checked other piping issues in the basement (at no cost) and informed that I should look into these repairs for the future (nothing immediate -- and did not try to push sale -- but I am glad he informed me of these issues that exist). They repaired the leak and I enjoyed their professionalism and the constant communication -- text with Bill and phone with Warren. They would have gotten all A's -- but the pricing seemed a little steep especially to open access to the leak itself. I would suggest, bringing down the pricing on access. I completely understand their visit charge-- as there is Overhead and time involved to sending someoneout. I feel they would ALWAYS recieve all A's if the access charge would be decreased. I will definitely be calling them for more repairs to the premise.
Description of Work: Repaired a leaking pipe in the basement.

After being taken advantage of so many times when it comes to getting repairs, it really feels good to have finally found someone who is honest and the price is fair. I have already put a good plumber in my phone contacts. Whenever I need a plumber I will be calling them. Thumbs up to a good plumber
Description of Work: I had a radiator that was leaking from the top floor downstairs. I called a good plumber after reading all of their great reviews. Justin came in figured out the problem right away and corrected it. The cutoff valve was loose. He tightened it and it hasn't leaked since. I wanted to change the valve since it was so old. He had to order it because the radiator is old this is not a popular valve. They will call me when it comes in.

Bill and his guys from A Good Plumber did a great job from the 1st call to schedule an appointment until the 2nd service call to complete the sink and toilet work. In between the 1st call and second was hurricane Sandy. Our work was low priority based on all the people reeling from the storm and we knew it. Bill called to let us know that he would need to come back at a later time to finish. The sink and toilet became big issues for us and Bill was able to stop by and take care of them amidst all the storm related work he was doing. I look forward to having A Good Plumber back to finish up the rest of the work in the near future.

My experience with a good plumber was definitely A+. They were a little late but they called and I understood, knowing that everyone is busy due to hurricane Sandy. When Justin got here he was very professional and pleasant. I will definitely be using a good plumber again. As a matter of fact I have already added them to my contacts in my phone.
Description of Work: I had a radiator that was leaking. Justin came and tightened it up. He said I needed a new cutoff valve which had to be ordered because the radiator is very old. He will call me when the valve comes and someone will come and put it on. But he said it wouldn't leak in the meantime and it hasn't.

I Ames the guy from Good plumber how old is my furnace and I was told 37 years old and he says it works good. I was surprised he didn't say to me you have to put a new gas furnace. But I will this summer.
Description of Work: The guy from Good Plumber was very nice. Due to hurricane Sandy appointment was schedule on November 28Th by this time my husband have checked all the radiators. The guy from Good plumber clean filter. I think it has to be different description on Angie's list for people who has steam or gas furnace. In my voucher it says lubrication of system, add chemical. Any of this has to be applied to my service because I have gas furnace. Very good contact e-mails, phone calls.

I called A Good Plumber, distraught about a radiator leak (I know, it sounds dramatic, but our house is a problem child and small problems tend to end up costing thousands). They had no appointments that week, but made a heroic effort to squeeze me in in a few days' time instead, which they ended up being able to do and which was really nice of them. The serviceperson, Michael I think?, arrived right on time, identified the problem (messed-up packing in the valve, plus my radiator was pitched wrong), and fixed it. He double-checked that it would now run without leaking, and also gave me some valuable intel about valves (i.e., civilians shouldn't bother touching 'em). He could have charged me for a new valve, but didn't. Very friendly contacts across the board; very patient about explaining what was wrong and what could be done; and best of all, Old Scratch doesn't leak anymore. (For now. This house, oy vey.) Totally recommend A Good Plumber; they really seem to be concerned with your plumbing happiness. :) -- Sarah Bunting, the actual customer

The Overall the staff was very knowledgeable, professional and pleasant. Our only concern was the prices that are high although the representative did explain the cost is in the quality services. Again, the overall experience was quick and efficient. I would certainly consider them in the future for other p.
Description of Work: The good plumbers installed an important pipe from the furnace for release water that can be hot. They installed a pipe aiming approx. 4 inches to the floor. Also, they thoroughly explained options for a new water heater that is due. We are working on the resources to help us consider the upgrade asap.

I called to schedule an early a.m. appointment after paying for the $99 special and was given several options. The morning of, I received an advance confirmation call and a timely appearance. Service was performed as above, by the owner himself. I gave him my Angie's List coupon and requested information for future maintenance. In addition to being professional and knowledgeable he was very pleasant. I will use this company again for any and all plumbing needs.
Description of Work: My boiler was thoroughly checked and cleaned including its parts, water, air exchange, bells & whistles and then turned on to check my radiators. It was a great job, professionally done and I will never call anyone else!

Very professional, clean, and nice, this family operation was responsive and prompt. Their prices are explained upfront, and they guarantee their work, some for 2 years. They seemed pricey, but I did have a lot of work done. Everything in a house can be improved, and it's sometimes hard to know if some work is necessary, but when a plumber tells you something is not to code, you want it done right. I have had other plumbers to the house who never mentioned some of the things that were worked on. However, in 7 years of living in this house, the heating system had always had hissing and banging; now, after A Good Plumber did their work, I cannot even tell the heat is on it is so quiet. That is definitely worth the money.

I bought a foreclosed house with lots of damage and problems. I installed a new heating system last year and it ran well last winter. With the fall heating season coming upon us again, I called "A Good Plumber" to check my system and make necessary repairs if needed. They initially came to test the system and we found a leaking flange and the errors with the wiring on the thermostats. Repairs were done and they tested the entire system again and left it working better than before.
Description of Work: My first call to them was for an annual boiler system check. We found problems with the thermostats and a leak in the boiler. They returned after getting the necessary parts and they repaired the system by changing a flange and several nipples that were part of the leak. They ran a thorough diagnosis of the electrical wiring for the thermostats and rewired them correctly. The work was quick and thorough. Pricing was very good.

I recently bought a coupon from Angie's List to have my furnace cleaned. I just moved into the house and based on what my inspector said. I knew the furnace has been neglected and was never been serviced. Every time I turned on the unit I had this horrible water hammering noise coming from the pipes. I called up A Good Plumber and I spoke to Bill who scheduled my appointment. He was very courteous and was very honest about the what time I could expect someone to show up. It is hard to for me to take a day off from work but Bill was able to work with my schedule. Warren was the plumber who showed up to do the work and he turned out to be the owner of A Good Plumber. Warren was extremely friendly and professional. The day he showed up it was pouring rain. Unlike other contractors I dealt with, Warren had the common sense to put on clean slip on over his shoes. This prevented him from tracking in dirt into the house. A big plus in my books. Warren noticed one safety fault with the furnace that was not up to code but it was not something pressing that I needed to change. He never pressured me to change it out. He did notice the glass tube that indicates the water level was filled with all this dirt and guck. He tried to train the water hoping the debris would filter out but it was clogged good. He offered to change the glass on the spot. I am glad I did because the amount of dirt and debris was disgusting. Once that was completed he checked a safety device that monitors the pressure of the furnace. The device was functional but he went and took it off just to inspect the pig tail pipe. That entire pig tail pipe was filled with dirt. Rendering the pressure device useless and I would of never of known about it. It took Warren about a good 5 to 7 minutes to clean all that stuff out. Another big plus in my book is Warren is he extremely clean and will not leave a mess. He cleans up everything once he was done. I say he worked on my furnace for a good 2 and 1/2 hours. He turned on the unit and everything worked great and even the water hammering was gone. Any work that needs to be done he has the prices in writing. So you know what to expect. I am one satisfied customer. Thank you again Warren. Eric

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and wonderful review. I can only respond by simply not stating thank you! We appreciate that you took notice of the little things we do to make working with us a wonderful experience. We try our best to respect your home by being neat and clean and using these best parts and having respectful, knowledgable technicians who WILL ALWAYS BE HONEST WITH YOU AND NEVER PUSH YOU TOWARDS SOMETHING YOU DON'T NEED!!! There is a BIG difference between pushing someone to do work, and simply letting them know there may be a problem. Thank you for seeing the difference and respecting how we work. We always look out for our customer's best interest, and its always in your best interest to know what is right and what is wrong in your home. Thank you for realizing the value in what we do and seeing that having all these services is worth it to you in the long run...lowest prices are not always the best choice. Finally, with regards to value again, as you noted, which again we truly appreciate, when you couple the service, professionalism and quality of what we do, you do get more than your money's worth. Thank you for that distinction! We hope to be of service to you whenever you need us!

The service and work was done well, but their pricing is far too high, each and every time they walk into your house it will cost you $59.00 surcharge before they even do any work. If the you approve the work to be performed you still need to pay the $59.00 surcharge. With three visits and over $2,000.00 worth of work it cost us an extra 200.00 with the surcharge. We certainly do not mind to pay for good work but their prices are far too high.
Description of Work: First service was to clean out a clogged bathtub drain and to replace a complete toilet commode. The second service call was to clean out the same bathtub clog, this resulted in replacing serveral waste pipes which were old. The third service call was to replace a worn out piece in the down stairs bathroom.

When it comes to pricing, which seems to be the main issue here, what can I say? No one can expect to get a Ferrari for the price of a used Saturn (no offense Saturn). We are not saying we are Ferrari, but we strive to be the best. The issue is, many customers, such as this one, compare us to the local handyman or contractor, or piping guy who happens to do plumbing work on the side. FYI, they are all UNLICENSED to do any plumbing work in your home, if they cause any damage your insurance WILL NOT cover it, they do not offer warranties as we do and if a city inspector sees them working in your house, their truck can be confiscated and YOU THE HOMEOWNER are subject to fines! Feel free to read this brief article and browse the site. Also, under the list of licensed master plumber members, you will find us! http://www.nycmpc.org/why-you-should-hire/ You cannot compare our skills, professionalism, and warranties and service to them. Of course our price is higher so I am confused by this review. Every customer is told over the phone before the first appointment (just as any major company such as Sears) and each subsequent call there is a service fee. I pay a co-pay every time I see a doctor. This is to cover our expenses to send a qualified tech to you. There are expenses to be covered and we can’t drive around all day giving free estimates. Also, all our prices are gone over with the customer before any work is done and price guide is left with the customer…we have nothing to hide. My confusion is, if this customer knew about our service fee and our “high prices”, why did we go there 3 times? Apparently we did something right or else we wouldn’t have been called back 2x after the initial call. Also, why join our savings and home protection club if our quality, professionalism, and prices are not to your liking? Unfortunately, as coincidence will have it, rotted leaking pipes are not the same as a clog even though they may be on the same fixture a month later. If it were any damage we might have done, the leak would have been apparent immediately. All our works comes with guarantees, which we gladly stand behind! I have said it before, we cannot give the best service, technicians, professionalism, warranties and still be cost effective as to everyone’s own definition as to “priced right.”

They came out to see my boiler and claimed they had to change the valve and had to do work on the boiler to get it to come on and stay on. They stated they had to change a valve on the boiler but I had another plumber look at it and he said there was no change. There were three major changes they claimed they need to do. The worker told me it would be $600 and I spoke to the owner who stated it would be $1382.00.They changed the price on me and there was nothing wrong the boiler after all.

Response from A Good Plumber Inc
At A Good Plumber as we’ve noted many times before, we try to achieve complete customer satisfaction. Sometimes, when dealing with the people, this is not always possible. When our technician arrived, Member who is an absentee owner, told us to call her after we began the inspection and tell her what we found. Maybe if she was present, we would have been able to show her exactly was the issues were and this could’ve been resolved. Our technician found that the main drain valve on the boiler was completely clogged and broken and we could not get any water out of this boiler. Our technician got a verbal ok from the owner to replace the drain valve. There is NO way to properly test certain safety devices (such as low water cut-off without draining the boiler), or add our chemical and properly complete our inspection. Once the valve was changed, we were able to continue with our inspection. This is why the price changed. Once we were able to run our diagnostics, we found additional items wrong on the boiler. At this point, Member did not pick up her cell phone and my technician could not wait around as we had more jobs scheduled. We left it for then and called Member on the phone to tell her what we found. She said she could not afford to do the work and that is fine with us, we would have worked with her. The licensed plumber and owner of our company took the time to explain what was needed to be done. We left 4 documented message for her to explain what was going on and why there was a difference. We are not sure what “plumber” came after us, but apparently did not know what they were doing or looked at the valve WE ALREADY CHANGED and that is why there was nothing wrong with it. The boiler was missing a backflow-preventer and check valve, which while not affecting the boiler itself from running, are now required by NYC DOB. This was optional work we only brought to her attention. The low water cut-off, one of the main safety devices on a boiler was not working. Once we changed that clogged drain and were able to drain the boiler. The low water cut-off is a safety device, which shuts the boiler off in case of a leak, or low water and prevents “dry fire”. This is basically when the main burners run and heat a cast iron block with no water in it. There is risk of cracking the block, carbonization or fire. Upon completely draining the boiler, the low water cut off did not shut the boiler off and it kept running. Very dangerous situation! There was also a copper line that needed to be re-worked near the boiler because it was dripping. We explained the new code items could’ve waited, but strongly suggested the other work. Member stopped returning our phone calls and chose not to do them. Not sure why she felt tarnishing our reputation was necessary when we legitimately explained and offered to show her why such work was needed. And of course, on good faith, we got a verbal ok to replace the drain valve over the phone and trusted the customer to pay for that valve. This payment was still never made to our company!

Once again A Good Plumber to the rescue. Our kitchen faucet broke yesterday morning, leaving us without water in our kitchen sink. We called A Good Plumber as we are now Diamond Club Members; they were extremely busy with customers who have heating problems, still they made an appointment to fit us in this morning. After I explained our problem to Bill, he advised us where to go to get the faucet parts or purchase a new faucet. First we went to one plumbing supply company and spoke to Edie, he checked for the parts, they did not have them in stock and he realized that we needed them right away. Edie sent us to another plumbing supply company, Just as I was explaining to a young man in the store what I needed, the owner Eric stepped up and said ?if you can bring the faucet back, I will swap it out for you". The service at this plumbing supply company was so great that I am still wondering did I just dream this up. Mike from A good Plumber came by early this morning, on the way to his first appointment; he took the old faucet out so that we could bring it to the plumbing supply company and get the new faucet. Mike is coming back Monday morning to install the new faucet, so kindly given by the plumbing supply company. All of this great service from three companies in Brooklyn. A Big Thank You to All.

They were very courteous, pleasant, and did their job. I did expect somewhat more in depth of work that they would do in the house instead of just light touching of things.
Description of Work: They did a check up on my furnace.

Response from A Good Plumber Inc
I am sorry to hear you were not 100% happy with our services. We take our ratings on Angie's List very seriously and only want A's. With regards to the punctuality, the traffic from Brooklyn to Queens on a weekday morning is out of our control, not to mention we had 2 emergencies that morning of boiler leaks and customers with no heat. We had to re-work our entire schedule but did give a courtesy call to let you know were running late. Then we even called to apologize and gave a $25 credit on your account for the inconvenience. I cannot do any more than that. With regards to the service itself, I am not quite sure what was expected to be done rather than a "light touching". A hot water boiler has much less maintenance than a steam boiler. My technician was there 2+ hours and cleaned the burner tray, checked the aquastat, checked relief valves, checked circulators, checked flu for proper exhaust, pressure and temp gauges, overall piping, and waited for heat to build up and made sure all radiators got hot. Although this may appear like a light touching, all safety devices were tested and made sure your system was in working, safe condition. If that was not up to standards, I know we cannot please everyone (although you are the only of 50+ Angie's List Big Deal customers to have an issue) but the service was done properly and everything we said would be done was done to make you and your family safe and comfortable. We do strive for 100% customer satisfaction and something things may be out of our control but we try to dot he right thing for our customers and our Angie's List reviews clearly reflect that.

All went well from start to finish.
Description of Work: A good plumber should change their name to Top of the line plumber. Warren was more than I expected. As a woman getting back expiriences and taken advantage of. If I had met A good plumber three years ago I would have jobs done right, at a lower cost without aggravations. Thank you Warren you were great.

s It went well. Tommy and Michael were very competent and personable. There were suggested upgrades to the boiler, which I accepted and had done. This company has a system of pricing which I'm not sure I have fully evaluated. It seemed rather high on the price numbers. It makes clear exactly what you will pay, but, sometimes the open market with it's competition, where the customer can choose the options, may be better. At the conclusion of the inspection of the boiler I opted for a plan called "The Diamond Club". It has many features that I like, such as, a set monthly premium that is like a protection or insurance plan for future service. I will reserve judgment about until any future use of it comes about. One caveat that was told to me after I had signed on to the plan, which essentially meant that I would most likely use their services in the future, is a surcharge of over $70.00 every time they come to my house. Since I had been discussing a long term job entailing changing piping under the basement flooring that would be an unusually extra expense every time they came here. This projected job would most likely be a few days and therefore rather onerous!! Other than that their services seemed to be quite good.

The company was quick to make an appointment that was convenient for me, they were prompt and courteous. I needed a few other plumbing related problems seen to, and the technician was more than happy to explain step by step what he was doing. Great job! I'll definitely use again!

Thomas and Mike were both very knowledgeable and friendly and I would definitely use them again. They performed the boiler maintenace and explained in detail how our whole heating system worked and what we need to do to maintain it ourselves. I would without a doubt recommend them to a friend.

An appointment was made and Thomas and Mike came to inspect the heating system. We needed 3 valves. Thomas explained in detail everything that needed to be done and the cost. Mike checked to see that the heating system was functioning properly and even detected a safety issue we were not aware of. We have already arranged to have them return to repair and update our hot water boiler. I recommend them highly.
Description of Work: We just purchased a house and wanted to have the heating system checked. I purchased a big deal coupon from Angie's list and called A Good Plumber.

Went very well. He was here for almost 2 hours.
Description of Work: Tommy came in to clean and do general maintenance on the natural gas steam boiler. I used the promotional 99$ deal offered through my email. He did an extremely thorough job. Better than anyone else I ever had look at the boiler before. He made suggestions for replacement of old parts and I chose to do one loop pipe replacement for 60$. Looking at their printed price list I feel they are high priced for something's and averaged priced for others. They do a very good job.
