I called A Good Plumber to unclog my bathroom sink the day before my Christmas party. It was almost Noon on a Friday, but my call was answered by a pleasant answering service who promised I'd get a call back either way. An hour or so later, Bill, the owner, called me and said he'd try to get one of his guys to come by since he was a few blocks away. It was the first snow in NYC and with the low temperatures all of his plumbers were out on heating calls. After 20 mins, Bill called back and told me I was in luck! He explained to me the company is licensed and bonded, but is not the cheapest in all cases. I appreciated the honesty upfront. A plumber arrived within 30 minutes. He was pleasant, professional and neat. The job was done in about 30 mins. I will definitely use A Good Plumber again and recommend them highly.

Everything was professional, upfront, and smooth. One of the owners, Bill, worked hard to actually reach me -- each time he called I seemed to be unavailable, but he persisted in a kind way. When we finally spoke, I explained the issue. He was very upfront about how the company works, claiming himself that they weren't the least expensive but they also weren't the most expensive but that the job that actually needed to get done would be done. And that is entirely correct. I believe the technician who showed up was named Jose. Extremely professional in every way. And let me say this, I have never used any provider of this sort who left my home exactly as cleaned as when they arrived. I was amazed. I really detest haggling and shopping for "best prices." Honestly, my time is more valuable than that (as everyone's is, I think!) For me, I look for people who are honest, reliable, do the job they set out to do and stand by it. This company did that, and more.

Good Plumber is EXTREMELY professional. They are a high quality plumbing ORGANIZATION. They don't claim to be the cheapest around, which is good since they can end up pretty expensive. They use a system of grading (or flat fees) to diagnose issues and give you a straight forward price before work starts. This seems great but depending on the work, can put you in the higher flat fee bracket while falling into the low end of the actual work necessary. For my particular situation, I had a very old Boiler (1960s) that would not ignite the burners. After an onsite inspection and price quote for $770, I decided to go with another company to perform the work for substantially less. I ended up paying about 65 bucks for them to come look at the issue and provide the proposal. This charge would have been removed from the estimate if I would have went with them to complete the work. I definitely can't complain about Good Plumber's professionalism though. They were punctual, responsive and communicated issues and problems very well. In my particular case though, they misdiagnosed an issue or perhaps were just being very overly cautious on the approach to resolution. I would definitely recommend them for Tenant/Landlord type situations where you (landlord) want to remain hands off and allow the professionalism of the plumbing team to handle/coordinate with tenants but for personal plumbing, I would not want to pay for that additional overhead.

They were very professional. The service guy was very nice and he was very thorough and he went over everything and really took his time. The Big Deals that I purchased, I wish that I would have waited as I spent the $400.00 and they have to come back as I do need to get everything re-piped. They are excellent, I would definitely recommend and use them again. They stick to a list of preset prices. They have a Diamond Club which is a discount program they have that gives coupons and you get one visit to check the system out. They are very quick and I spoke with Bill Sobolow who was able to diagnose the issue and he was very knowledgeable over the phone. The experience was very good overall. They showed up on time and the guy that came Jose Ramirez called before coming to my home as well.
Description of Work: He cleaned everything and he did bleed the radiator. They did replace a tank and they did look at a valve that is broke and that is on the boiler. He just said it was the way it was installed and it even had missing valves and a few of the valves were not working. They determined both boilers were on one same line and they should be on two lines connecting each hot water heater. This was for a Big Deal purchase.

The service representative Jose was very polite and professional. He explained everything he needed to do. After cleaning the boiler he explained the boiler needed a roll out switch that he didn't have at the time. He checked the radiator and replaced a value. On 11/8/13 he returned to install the roll out switch. The boiler is working and I am very satisfied!

l have never been disappointed with a provider or contractor I found on Angie's List. However this particular contractor was heads above the rest. Their mission statement, which is on their trucks, says it all......"customer service is exceeding the customer's expectations." That aptly and succinctly describes my experience with them. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend this provider for plumbing work. It all begins with the intial phone contact from "Bill" (who I believe is one of the owners). He did something noone else has done in my many years of experience as a landlord. He went to great lengths to explain to me the high professional and industry standards that his company observes. And everything that he said turned out to be true. The technician that came to service my furnance and eventually replace my hot water heater with a new one, was very professional, courteous, always on time, knowledeable and explained everything to me step by step as he went about doing his job. He gave me tips on how to maintain my boiler and water heater in order to save money. He even carted away my old water heater. He was well dressed in a company uniform with an identification card with his picture on it. Perhaps that is not a big deal, but I never saw that before. If a company goes to such lengths to excell in every detail of their business, even the small ones, it says a lot about them. When I was told the water heater needed to be replaced, the technician showed me why the old one was beyond repair. He came prepared with literature to show me a variety of hot water heaters and accesories, in various price packages, and took his time to discuss each one with me and the benefits of one package over another. I settled on a mid-range package that was very reasonably priced. The package provides me with safety features on the new water heater, free annual inspections, extension of the warranty on the water heater, priority response in the even of future emergencies and other benefits. Finally, after the work was done, Bill called back again the day after the work was done in order to get my feedback. Amazing. Their communication with me, from the beginning to the end of the work, was outstanding. I even got a text message each time the the technician was coming to the premises.
Description of Work: I originally called the provider to perform annual maintenance service on my gas furnace for a rental property I own and to look at a leak that appeared to be coming from my hot water heater.

As much as anything under an A troubles us, a review like this truly lifts us up. At times, being rated in a public place like this can be difficult. We take the good with the bad. We truly try our best to exceed our customer's expectations and it is wonderful to know that we are appreciated. Plumbers have a bad rap and to be appreciated and accoladed for the little things we do to set ourselves apart, is an amazing feeling. It lifts the morale of all of us, especially the technician that was there. All I can say is we try this hard with ALL the clients we serve. It was truly a pleasure dealing with you and knowing not only did we earn your business, but your trust! We will always guide you for what's best for your home and family. Thank you for the kind words and thanks you for allowing us to serve you for many years to come!

Found roots by 2" mark and beyond. Found collapsing of sewer line starting at 24ft. Cleared the main sewer stoppage (14 day warranty) and treated with root x. Advised that replacement would be necessary and recommended a contractor for the work. Very thorough and very professional. Took time to explain situation in all details. Very helpful in setting up our future planning for this situation.

We just hung up the phone with this customer. We document all our calls now being this is becoming an issue where people leave bad reviews for no call backs. we learned our lesson. This customer called at 8:07pm sunday evening and did not deem the call an emergency so we called back the next business day. We called back around 10:15am the following morning and no answer. The customer says at that time he was already with another plumber. All we can guess is he might have missed the call being he was occupied with the other plumber but we did call back and we keep records of that. Sometimes people do not pick up because while sometimes we work remotely and our number is blocked as to not give out our home phone numbers. We did inform him we attempted to call and apologized for missing him and do hope he changes his feelings about us.

They definitely did something. They didn't go over weekly maintenance like they had mentioned. They did try to get me to spend $400 on a water release valve for an old boiler (aka a component I didn't need at all) and wrote me up a quote for about $1400 to provide all recommended fixes on the boiler, providing nothing but vague responses for how to do so. I have little doubt that they know their stuff enough to do some legitimate work, but I'm sure you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere. Update: To A Good Plumber CorpSep 15I said "not to say they didn't know their stuff" -- you did. I believe I gave a B for quality. I went to a college where students receive as many As as Fs. I found the work was good, the price was excessive and the attitude / communication was below par. He tested the system, but he didn't go over what I should do. The $400 valve was something the technician told me directly claiming it'll be good forever before I rejected it, but he didn't take to heart that I don't plan on having this boiler much longer. He said it with a smirk of 'this guy will totally go with it'. He didn't take to heart that I don't plan on having this boiler much longer. Quoted me loosely $10k for a new boiler when a local plumber quoted me $4k . I know that major companies have overhead that small independent plumbers don't necessarily have. I also know that I could have gotten all the work done more cheaply and of comporable quality. But I got suckered into another big deal. C is average. Sorry Also, I talked with a plumber and he said that the suggestions didn't make sense to him. I'm sure he's exaggerating to an extent, but there were some pipes that needed work mostly. The boiler'll run for another few years and then be replaced most likely. No need to sink over a thousand now
Description of Work: "Boiler furnish maintenance package" . As far as I can tell, they added some chemical to the boiler and cleaned it out a bit for me

It gets very challenging at times not to take reviews to heart because they are a grade for our performance and here at A Good Plumber we strive for A’s all the time. We have realized that this is an impossible task because you can’t please everyone, some people place unreasonable demands on a company, and sometimes we make mistakes, but we do our best to resolve them. When people buy “big-deals”, or “groupons”, they must understand how these deals work. First, a special like this is greatly discounted off our normal prices and then it gets split with the company you are purchasing it from. So we need to make sure we earn a customer’s trust knowing they will use us in the future and knowing if we don’t, we lost a lot of money for our time there. According to our time records, we spent just under 3 hours at the property above and our normal expenses and overhead are still there. In that time we did a multi-point boiler inspection: drained and re-filled the system, added chemical, cleaned the burner tray and burners, tested all controls and safety devices, electronics, ran the system, waited for it to heat all radiators, checked those radiators, and made sure the unit is safe and up to code. I am not sure what more customers expect for these deals, not to mention all we did was listed for them before they purchased the coupon. The majority of our customers are satisfied and we can’t please everyone. To the untrained eye it may look like we didn’t do much, but we did. To suggest we just added chemical and didn’t do much is unfair. What truly gets to us is however, which we have seen before, is over-exaggerations in sub-par reviews. There is not one item or drain valve on our estimate for $400. The most expensive single item on that estimate for work needed is $267(and we never recommend work that is not needed so I am sure if was for a valid reason.) If we are going to get a sub par review, at least let it be honest and not become something to tarnish our solid reputation. Finally, to say “we don’t know our stuff” is a tremendous insult. We are fully licensed plumbers with over 20 years experience in plumbing and gas heating and our technician that was there, has 5+ years experience and not to mention voluntarily goes to classes 2 nights a week to further educate himself specifically on the intricacies of hydronic heating so he may best serve our customers. There is not a doubt in my mind if he recommended work to be done on a house built in 1900, he recommended it for a reason. To suggest otherwise is not fair. If someone expects us to come into a 113 year old house and not find something that needs to brought to their attention to enhance the efficiency of their system, they are mistaken. We are adults and want to service our customers as best as possible. If you have an issue or question with us, call us let us know and we will take care of it. That is why our motto is “exceeding customer’s expectation before, during and after the job”. We will gladly answer any concerns and do such a good job at making you feel comfortable, reviews like this will not happen. Sometimes, things get overwhelming on a job and knowing you have more work ahead of you and a technician might miss a point…you can gladly ask them, remind them, or call us up and we will take care of it. Thank you for your time in responding to the review and should there be any questions about or services or maintenance, we will gladly answer them.

A++ There are many, many reasons why I'd recommend working with this company. Most notable for me was that they were courteous and communicative. In the past I've had extremely frustrating experiences waiting around for plumbers who don't show up, or who show up hours after the time they quoted to me without having the courtesy of calling to let me know. Generally I consider myself fairly easy-going and understand that delays happen. What drives me crazy is when people don't call to let me know they're running late. With A Good Plumber Inc., the plumber ended up running about an hour later than the window he quoted me, but had the courtesy to call and let me know of that in advance. When he finished his prior job, I received a text message from him letting me know that he was on his way. When he did arrive, he was both extremely friendly and professional, and took time to explain to me every step of the process (and the price) before proceeding with the work. He completed the job in a reasonable amount of time and provided me with recommendations as to steps I could take to prevent such problems in the future. Like I said there are many reasons why I'd recommend hiring A Good Plumber Inc.! I'm very satisfied with their work.
Description of Work: Our sewer line became clogged and raw sewage was backing up into our basement. Plumber snaked the sewer lines, vacuumed out the trap, and applied a chemical cleaner to clean up the build-up of grease.

They were fine. I don't think we would hire them again though because we were given an absolute guarantee assurance that they were going to be able to pinpoint what the problem was and then when we had someone else do it, it was very clear that it was much more complicated issue than what they had diagnosed it to be. The price was quite reasonable, it was typical. He proposed what he could do regarding the problem. He suggested that he sneak through the toilet when we clearly had a trap that he could use. He didn't do a thorough check. We weren't crazy about the suggestion that he made for us. It took him a couple of days for him to finally come because there was some sort of a problem so they had to cancel. When he came, he was prompt, he was courteous and he was professional but when I explained what I understood to be the problem and he guaranteed that if he put a camera down, he could absolutely figure out where the clog was and how he could fix it and it turned out that that was not actually going to be a viable solution. He was responsive but he just wasn't accurate. He was clear about being neat and tidy.

Thank you for your reply but there must be some misunderstanding or miscommunication somewhere along the line. We never suggested going through the toilet bowel because we know out camera would not make it through all those turns. The initial call was an issue with the main sewer. We don’t guarantee with absolute certainty that we can solve an issue, especially in an instance like this where we need to go further to find out what is going on. As we recall, there was a no-hub fitting in the vertical position which is very easy to disconnect and put the camera in and we make our proposals based on what we feel is the right thing to do. The main problem here is your main sewer was cemented over and we could not find it. We proposed to come back with our sewer camera and our ultra sound locator. As soon as our camera was out of the repair shop, which was within about 2 days, we called to set-up an appointment and the customer had someone else come. If the customer found another way to do so, it doesn’t mean out way would not have worked but based on what we knew and were able to see, that was the best way to do so. Either which way, the right thing to do no matter what, which I hope was done was to expose the main sewer trap…in case of a back-up, this is the first place to access and clean it so it needed to be done anyway. For some reason, despite the customer seeming to be happy with us, we were never given the opportunity to follow-up and be able to solve the issue so I am confused when they say we did not solve the problem...we attempted to come back but they apparently couldn't wait. It is not something you can just look at and see without investigating properly.

Father and son team were very friendly, prompt and helpful. Their business is different from other plumbers in that they have glossy price sheets and service plans laid out in brochure style. On the one hand, you are paying a bit more, on the other hand you know up front exactly what you are going to pay. And the service the provide is very high quality. I had hissing and clanging radiators for years, and this winter I never noticed them!

I purchased an Angie's List Big Deal special offer for this service. They kind of just looked at it and did a visual inspection, but that was basically it. I did not think it was worth the money. He did not clean anything or take anything apart; we were inspecting a lot more than I got. I am not sure if I read the Big Deal print right about what they were supposed to be providing. I did not like the service. He did clean the front of it but did not drain water from the system or add any chemicals. I did not get what I paid for because he did not do a lot of the stuff that was supposed to be done. The service was not great, but it was not lousy. He came a long distance for the service call and I don't think he expected the trip to take that long so he ran a little late; but he was courteous and did call to let me know he was running late. The price was way too expensive for what I got. They were on time for the call and very responsive if I needed anything. He was supposed to call me back for a different item but never did. They were very professional.

thank you for taking the time to you review us! unfortunately there is a misunderstanding and some explanation required here. the description of what is to be done in the "big deal" boiler service special is combined together for the two types of boilers were work on. those types are steam and hot water systems. unfortunately being this our first big deal there was no detailed explanation...just a combination of descriptions. the type of system you have was a hot water system. in a hot water system there is no draining out the system or adding a chemical. hot water systems are closed looped systems. that only applied to a steam system. just as in the ad it speaks of lubricating the circulators, that is only in a hot water system as yours (unless a steam system has a basement loop). as we did more of these, we did best to instruct our phone representatives to make sure this was explained to all our customers so a situation like this was avoided. i see by the date of service, this was pretty much right after the hurricane so it is possible with all the confusion a temporary phone rep. did not explain that to you. they should have still, despite it seeming to be only "looked" at did a full test of all the safety devices on the system, check all controls, radiators for heat and a balanced system, radiator valves, etc. being your home was relatively new and really didn't need much work, it went quicker than usual but i assure you it was checked over properly. our apologies for that not being explained but according to our records, we assure a full service was done as it can be on your type of system.

mpresThe person who arrived was punctual. He was very professional, knowledgeable and very friendly. He was able to provide a general explanation of the working order of our machine, as well as walk me through potential problems and what the signs of them were. Finally, he was knowledgeable about our specific machine, advising me of a common problem with our specific brand, when to expect it and what would need to be done to repair it. I was very impressed overall.
Description of Work: The provider did a yearly inspection of our boiler for winter and started it up for us.

I called and left a message earlier in the week and 2 days later no one had called me back. I called once again and left a message, mentioning the failure to receive a return phone call. Bill returned my phone call within an hour, very apologetic and extremely polite. I described my situation over the phone (leak in the basement) and he told me that it didn't really sound like a plumbing issue. He suggested I call a waterproofing contractor rather than pay the $59 service charge to have someone come and restate what he'd already told me. I appreciated his honesty but wanted them to come anyway since I had a few other things I needed to show them. We agreed that someone would be there on the following Tuesday between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. Well, Tues came and 1:00 came and went, then 2:00 came with no sign of anyone. No phone call, nothing. I called at 2:05, left a message with the answering service (you can never call and speak directly with a plumber) and Bill called back about 10 minutes later, apologetic that no one had contacted me to let me know that they would be late, and explaining that they'd had an emergency that morning. He told me that they had a technician in the area and that he would send the tech right over. When it was all said and done, Michael (the plumber) didn't reach my home until 3:45pm. I was highly annoyed at the waste of my time, lack of communication, and apparent unprofessionalism. However, I was quickly put at ease when Michael showed up with his courteous, professional demeanor. We were able to address all of my concerns and he patiently answered all of my questions (I ask a lot of questions). By the end of his visit I'd signed up for the Diamond Club and planned for him to return for another job. Although we got off to a rough start, I think all in all I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Looked into water leak (evidently due to a crack in the foundation), fixed a running toilet in the basement bathroom, assessed the need for plumbing work in upstairs bathroom.

thank you for your review...this is how we improve ourselves and get better. we are in actually just switched answering services due to lack of messages from customers such as yourself. we strive every day to be better and have invested in new dispatching software. all customers receive a call, text, or email when we are on the way. unfortunately it does not notify when we are running late and when emergencies pop-up we sometimes lose track of time and forget to call because of the pressing situation. all i can offer is our apologies again for your waiting but note we are usually very good at sticking to that 2 hour time frame we give. thank you for your understanding and rest assure should you have an emergency, we will drop everything and be there to serve you! looking forward to seeing you on our upcoming appointment.

These guys are very charming, but that does not disguise the eye wateringly expensive nature of the service. You pay a significant call-out fee, and so when you get hit with the big price (very nicely presented on a laminated sheet showing "standard pricing") for what it is they are going to do, you have to do the calculation of whether it's worth paying the $60 for nothing and calling someone else. As they surely know, very few people do this. We needed a new pipe as a connection piece was missing. They left the improvised solution we had come up with to stop the leak, didn't install the new pipe, and added a, perhaps $5 (max) part. My advise is to try your best to describe what's wrong and ask them to give you the pricing for the various options - before you let them come. We paid over $400 for what was essentially a very cheap plumbing part and about 10 minutes work.

Thank you for your review and everyone is entitled to their opinion. We do appreciate that we were “charming” and you would appreciate that even more if you called some of our competition, trust us! With all due respect, you have the right to have an issue with our pricing, but please be forthcoming with all the facts, as over exaggerations hurt our image and our reputation we have built. First off, we were there for more than 10 minutes and you also neglected to mention we did a snake out of a drain for that job. In total, even with tax, the job was less than $400 with the coupon…not more than $400 as stated. The hose piece (which does cost more than $5) itself was only $133…not $400 for “10 minutes of work”. We never claimed to be and we do tell ALL customers before we come down we are not the cheapest you’ll find. $59 to come diagnose a problem is a small fee to offset our costs and this is told to all customers BEFORE they book an appointment. Everyone has the right to say I don’t want to pay the $59 and not book an appointment. This is not a surprise sprung on you once we pull up and walk into your home. Our professional time is valuable and we let you know that before we come down. Unfortunately we cannot drive around all day for free and just give out estimates. We need to pay for gas, employees, expenses, etc. Unfortunately, trying to get a price over the phone won’t work because we have NO IDEA what is really going on and need to see the situation and offer our years of experience to solve a problem. Sometimes we offer an even cheaper solution than people think because we know a better way. As a fully licensed and professional company with the warranties we offer, things cost money. We start every year over $100,000 in the red just on insurance premiums alone. Plumbing always is and will be a service industry. The parts are a very small cost…you are paying for the technicians and our skills and for someone to stand behind our work. Most people see these parts at a big box hardware store and yes they are inexpensive…but do they have the confidence or knowledge to do the work? That is why we are in business, as are all plumbers. It takes 7 years experience to become a licensed plumber in NYC and the skills and time we all invest in ourselves is what you pay for. Any handyman can do it for less absolutely…but also, anyone doing plumbing work in NYC not supervised by a licensed plumber is illegal and subject to fines and so is the homeowner if caught. Also, if they made a hole in your drain line with the snake or put the hose piece on wrong and you flooded, now what? Your insurance won’t cover it and now you’re in trouble. You pay more but know you are getting the job done right. Remember the piece of mind you have if that hose piece fails up until April 17th, 2014, we stand behind it. Unfortunately there are a lot of unscrupulous, unlicensed contractors running around out there even illegally advertising that that do plumbing that make us look expensive. We are proudly a licensed master plumber which can be verified right here with the NYC DOB: I promise the other plumbers you may find here, if they operate more than one truck as we do and have expenses we do, will have prices in the same ballpark as we do! [removed website] Thank you for the time in reviewing us and allowing us to respond.
