Tommy is great and we have used A Good Plumber three previous times and continue to be Diamond Members.
They are very professional and we feel comfortable knowing they will show up immediately in case of any emergency.
I would never consider using anyone else as all their employees are terrific.
"thank you very much for your kind words and we appreciate your business!"
"thank you so much for your kind words. it was a pleasure working for you and hope to do more work for you in the future."
"thank you for your review! it was a pleasure working for you and thank you for putting your faith in us to allow us to do this work for you. we are very proud of how nice it came out and look forward to doing more work for you in the future!"
Tommy also gave me some advice on a dryer issue i was having. He was very friendly and professional. My wife is particular about our house and he cleaned up after himself and wore booties in the house. I would recommend this company and this plumber in particular.
2) lets start at the beginning though.
3) when i spoke to bill to schedule the service he launched into a long story about how his company does things differently and they use something call "straightforward pricing" which clearly states the cost of repairs in different levels rather than (as he described it) other providers who charge by the hour or "make it up". fair enough i thought. that is why when jose (the plumber, who by the way, was excellent and professional) quoted me $554 (level 7) to replace the above mentioned cartridge i went along with it because frankly i thought it was a more involved job. when the job was done and i took a look at the "straightforward pricing" schedule, it was completely unclear why this 15 minute job was a level 7 when the exact same part (filter cartridge) was also listed in level 1 ($74). when i asked jose to call bill, i could overhear that it wasn't really clear what level this job should fall under but bill agreed - why not - that it should be level 7. noone could explain the difference in all the levels and why this job was in one category and not another. so, while "straightforward pricing" might sound good, its nothing but another gimmick whereby a provider can basically charge you whatever they want since its impossible for a layperson to understand, much less question, the different levels. i wish i could attach a picture of this schedule - its quite a work of literature.
in any case, i settled on a lower price with jose - who, again, was professional, competent and in my opinion a victim of this assinine pricing methodology.
4) so bottom line: outrageous charge for opening a drywall (another provider i called charges $145), and completely non-sensical pricing scheme really designed for mostly clueless home owners.
5) i have no doubt the techs are competent but frankly if you know a bit about what you're doing, go with someone with whom you can have an educated conversation about pricing and workflow.
6) fyi: i had another (well known) plumber come and perform the repair (including opening up another piece of drywall) for $350.
"Thank you for your review this is how we learn and grow to better serve our customers. Unfortunately we need to review our pricing in this instance and it was a misinterpretation on both our parts. In 4 years since implementing our straight-forward pricing this is the first time we had an issue and confusion over a shower cartridge. Usually we either replace the entire body or make adjustments not just replace a cartridge and if we do it is special pricing because cartridges range from $40-$200+. The level was looked at incorrectly and the $74 is for an in-line water filter cartridge, not shower cartridge. The part we used alone costs us over $55 so there is no possible way we can make a profit and charge $72 for it. Under our straight-forward pricing guide for bathrooms is the pricing for a cartridge replacement, which was in line with the pricing Jose originally gave. Unfortunately the general public doesn’t realize plumbing is a skill/service business and have no idea what it takes to run a business with licensing, schooling, insurances, overhead etc. so when customers begin to look at what parts costs at Home Depot, that has no basis whatsoever on what it costs us to send a clean, skilled, qualified technician to do the job right and warranty our work. Traveling to a customer, accessing, diagnostics, all take time and we are up front before we send a technician to a customer’s home that with us they good quality service and skilled technicians…maybe not for pennies on the dollar, but our Angies List and other review sites speak for themselves when the overwhelming majority of our customers see the value in our service and how we do things here. In an average day, we may do “plumbing work” for about 4-6 hours…the rest is travel, parking, diagnostics, and going over issues, concerns, pricing, explanations about plumbing, etc. with our customers. We tell everyone we are not the cheapest and not the most expensive either out there and that is a fact… but we do the job right and stand behind our work. In the newer age of computers, rather than people calling us and expressing a concern and allowing us to work it our or explain it, many people chose to run to a review site whether it be Angie’s List or someplace else and knock a system or company that is fair, honest. Like all things in life there are challenges and gray areas and we work through them with ourselves and our customers to ensure satisfaction. Straight-forward pricing is actually a patented, highly successful and fair successful system used by approximately 1,000 plumbers across North America. Once again for those looking to do business with us, there are issues in any business and nothing is perfect but once again, at the time this was written, note the 114 A’s we have and the poorer grades we can count on our hands. I can guarantee if those people had called us and allowed us to work it out, an amicable solution would have been reached. We look forward to answering any concerns or comments at any time from our customers or customers to be!"
"thank you for taking the time to review us and we look forward to working with you on this project!"
"thank you for reviewing us. jose is probably our best reviewed technicians on angies list and are proud to have him. we appreciate your kind words and signaling him out. we hope to be of service in the future!"
"thank you for reviewing us and hope to be of service again soon."
"thank you for reviewing us and pointing out the little things we do. its a pleasure dealing with you and knowing these things that are little to us others don't do is appreciated! looking forward to serving you for years to come!"
"thank you for taking the time to review us. we pride ourselves on being clean, and taking our time and making sure customers feel comfortable with us and know what we are doing in their home and why. we hope to be of service to you in the future."
Punctuality - I found that in general, the plumber didn't come at the appointed time. However, they do automatically text you when the plumber is headed your way, and they always eventually showed up. Treat your appointment time as a guideline as to when they will arrive, rather than as a set time.
Responsiveness - you won't always get a plumber on the phone, but they do use an answering service, which means that you at least always get to speak to a human instead of an answering machine. In general they call back on the same day, although I found if I called near the end of the day I would sometimes have to call again.
Price - as many reviews have stated, these guys don't come cheap. However, they do itemize everything and show you an estimate before they start anything. I don't have a good baseline for what the going rates are, but I did suspect that their prices are probably higher than average (especially for hardware), but again, I did feel like I was being taken care of during the whole process. We did end up spending significantly more than I was expecting on plumbing, but a lot of it was due to discovering the quirks of our 80-year-old building.
Overall, for anything complicated, I would definitely use these guys again. They are patient and thorough, and not against explaining what they are doing and why.
"thanks for the detailed review. we enjoy working with you and hope to be of service to you in the future."
"Thank you for taking your time to review us! Sometimes, being rated in a public place can be challenging, but when you have people like yourself who appreciate and see the value in what we do, how we work, how we guarantee our work and then to express those feelings here for us is very very much appreciated and makes it all worth it. Once again it was a pleasure dealing with you and look forward to doing more work with you in the future!"
"thank you for your review. while unfortunately we only have record of what was done that day, a reason for it was not put on the invoice. hopefully to put you at ease, we know our prices may be high but we are in line with many other shops in the u.s. we feel that good work, and good talent warranties, etc. all are justified in our prices because a customer gets what they pay for. we stand behind our work. the one thing i can GUARANTEE 100% is if any work was done, there was a necessary reason because you had one of our most decorated technicians in your home that day. he has been mentioned by name numerous times of angie's list ad other sites because of his honesty, skills, etc so rest assured if work was done, it was for your betterment. thank you and hopefully we will have the opportunity to serve you again."
"thank you for your review. while our prices may appear overpriced to some, we assure you the value and professionalism for what you get is what makes it worth it. good service comes at a cost and we had lower prices, quality sinks, workmanship, employee pay and it all trickles down. we have new technicians on board with us now should you need us. thank you!"
"thank you for taking the time to review us. all of us here truly appreciate it to know our hard work pays off! we do our best and accolades make it all worthwhile. it was a pleasure dealing with you and hope to do so again!"
I would hire the company again, but probably for more complex jobs where their expertise and experience would be a better value.
"thank you for your review. we tell everyone we are not the cheapest but we try to please our customers with the best service, technicians, parts, etc. and this costs money. as you've noted, which we truly appreciate, we served you well an hope to continue to do so."
"thank you for your review!"
If you're looking for quality work and quality people, these are your guys. This is your company.
I actually miss them.
"thank you all for taking the time to review us. thank you most for finding us on angies list and putting in touch with your absentee landlord. this was a big accomplishment for us to be able to properly communicate and deal with an absentee landlord so far away, especially given the magnitude of this job. we are sure you had to tell her about us and how we work and reassure her so she would trust us...thank you! it was a pleasure working for you and we have built a great relationship with you and your landlord as a result of this. this is what we always try to achieve...building relationships based on trust...not just repair and run. we look forward to serving you in the future!"
