I was not satisfied with them. I found them on Angie's List. They came the same day. They gave me an estimate of $425 for a part that costs $130. It was the wrong estimate. It turns out that my neighbor looked at the unit and found that the problem was totaling different from the one that they diagnosed. It was a fan belt and not the timer. My neighbor looked inside the machine and found the fan belt lying on the bottom. He replaced the fan belt and the machine worked again. It had nothing to do with the timer which the repairman said was the problem. The dryer is working fine. But I am still stuck with the $120 service charge for a misdiagnosis where the repairman didn’t even look inside the back of the machine. He just opened the dryer door, looked inside and felt that there was no heat; that's the extent of it. He diagnosed a broken timer; he made that deduction without actually examining the timer. They are very nice people, but they just didn’t do a good job. They didn’t find the problem; they didn’t look inside the dryer. He just putted around it and declared that the problem was something else. It's an inflated price and it's an incompetent analysis of the problem. They should be a little more thorough examining an appliance instead of charging all that money for a service call. It was pretty shocking. I would never get an estimate from them again in the future.
Description of Work: Millwood's Appliance Service came to give an estimate for an electric dryer that wasn’t working.

Some weeks after they came and made the repair the same malfunction recurred. We called them back, it took some time to respond and then they wanted to charge all over again. They said the work was only guaranteed 30 days and despite the EXACT same problem recurring they would not respond without recharging (what was not cheap in the first place). I would never recommend or use them again.
Description of Work: They came and repaired a fridge and a stove.

Hello [member name removed], I am sorry that your experience with Millwood's Appliances was not positive. We do try to work with our customers wherever possible and I regret we were not able to come to an arrangement. After being made aware of your experience, I also checked our records and spoke with the various staff members that dealt with your issue. I saw that we repaired two appliances for you in June and that you called us back in November stating you were having the problem again with one of them. We warranty our labor for 90 days rather than 30 you mentioned and this information is also on your copy of the invoice. As this was approximately five months after your first visit, and you wanted us to look at another appliance while we were there, we had to charge another service charge. Again, I apologize that we were not able to help you and I hope you were able to get the issue resolved.

I had already found the source of the problem to being an air circulator fan and managed to get a hold of the head of Summit's parts dept here in NYC. They nicely told me that there was no direct replacement part for the unit available anywhere, but maybe I could source a substitute. What Summit didn't tell me (or anyone because it wasn't on any blogs either) is that the fan transformer on the circuit board prematurely goes bad. They abandoned the electrical design entirely a year or two later. The Summit manager told me the design had changed. DARREN AT MILLWOODS TOLD ME WHY the refrig couldn't keep temperature. He'd seen it a lot and offered the knowledge with no hesitation at no cost. Amazing!
Description of Work: Darren, picked up the phone and he was the first (after speaking to several others) to clearly diagnose and problem with a 10yr narrow body Summit refrig.

Technician was very prompt -- showed up 1/2 hour early. Very professional. He did a diagnostic on my washer/dryer and recommended repairs that required ordering new parts. Said he would get back to me same day to advise whether parts are in stock, and would credit the visit against the cost of the repair.

Honest, helpful, considerate. Difficult to find these qualities in appliance repair folks, really appreciated their approach.
Description of Work: Called Millwood about my dishwasher, I ended up deciding to buy a new one because the cost of service likely would have been equal or greater to repair, but I very much appreciated their honesty and assistance. I would definitely use them in the future.

Provider knows how to take an appointment, but not how to keep that appointment. I was generally happy with the work when it did eventually get performed, but the price was certainly higher than it needed to be. I initially called on a Monday afternoon, and the person on the phone was very responsive. I gave very detailed description of the problem with my dryer and provided all of the requested information (model number, etc.). An appointment was set-up for the following afternoon. Very early on Tuesday morning, I received a phone call to change the appointment because of a clerical error on their end. Fortunately, I was able to accommodate the time change and the repairman came to look at the dryer. After a few minutes, the repairman determined that he would have to get different parts and return the next day to perform the work. So, an appointment time was agreed upon for Wednesday afternoon to return and perform the service. Very, very early on Wednesday I received a phone call to change the repair time. There was some additional confusion on their end and the time needed to change, otherwise they could not tell me when I could be put back on the schedule. I rearranged my schedule, and the repairman showed up Wednesday morning. After approximately 15 minutes, the repairman determined that he had ordered the wrong parts previously. The repairman claimed he would have to order a different part, and would not be able to return until Friday. So, i capitulated, and agreed upon a window of time for the repairman to return on Friday. On Thursday afternoon of this week, I called the company and confirmed the appointment for Friday ... because I was skeptical of their ability to keep an appointment given my experience. On Friday morning, I received a phone call claiming that my appointment for that day had to be moved to Monday because their was a "clerical error" on their end. I was not willing to accept this same, lame excuse a 3rd time in the same week and told them to come on Friday or don't bother coming at all. Needless to say, the repairman came on Friday to perform the service. The work that was performed on Friday did go very well. The repairman was very nice (as he was the 2 previous times he came to the house that week) and he was very professional with his work. Now that the correct part had been ordered and arrived, the total amount of time to perform the repair was about 30-40 minutes. Upon reviewing the bill for the work performed, I was very disappointed. There was a mark-up on the part of about 25-30% based on the internet research I was able to perform, This was not entirely unreasonable, in my opinion. However, I was very disappointed with the labor charges. The cost of Labor was for over 2 hours worth of work. This seemed egregious given the amount of time work was actually performed, the company's policy to waive an initial service call fee if work is performed, and the fact that the previous appointment/scheduling mishaps were due to company error and servery inconvenienced me for the entire week. At the end of the appointment, I expressed my displeasure, and was able to negotiate a slight discount on the labor. I also used an Angie's List coupon that was available for this provider to make the overall cost somewhat more palatable. When all was said and done, I would have a hard time using this provider again. The scheduling problems were a major inconvenience and created unnecessary, and costly disruptions to me. I might not have had such an issue with the price, if the scheduling was so problematic. However, the combination of scheduling miscues and high price left me very dissatisfied.
Description of Work: Provider was hired to repair a dryer that was making a horrible noise and not heating properly in a Whirlpool 'Thin Twin' Gas Washer & Dryer combination unit in my apartment.

Terrible. Mechanic was prompt and courteous, but in my opinion, was somewhat less than forthright. After looking underneath the machine, he told me that the vibration problem would be fixed by replacing "three shock absorbers" at a cost of $400.00. That's about half the cost of a new machine, and my machine is not that old. Mechanic said parts were expensive since all "three" had to be replaced. Decided to think it over. Service call was $50.00 dollars as advertised, but when I inquired about the 10% discount for seniors, also as advertised, I was told it only applies to a completed job, not the inspection and estimate. This, they did not advertise. I went on-line and found a website and I found the exact solution to my problem and was able to order the parts at Amazon for less than $50 (slightly less than repair-clinic's price). The parts consisted of a set of FOUR, NOT THREE, SUSPENSION RODS, NOT SHOCK ABSORBERS. I am not only a senior, but an attorney by profession, not a mechanic. While not all thumbs, I'm hardly what you would call a Mr. Fixit. I'm not, however, afraid to explore a problem. When the parts came in a couple of days, following the website's instructional video, I was able to do the job by myself. The entire job was done from the top, not underneath, and took me less than a half hour. The machine is working like a charm again. These are the facts. I leave it to the readers to judge the honesty of this provider. Whether this was an isolated incident by one employee, or not, I will not be calling this provider again. Too bad, because I had had a prior, more favorable, experience. It seems that honest repairmen are not easy to find, even on Angie's List. PS: The company I found on line is awesome!

Overall the experience was excellent, as described above.
Description of Work: Russell repaired our Kenmore washeer, replacing the drain pump. We thought the price ($285 before tax) was fair for the labor and materials. He came one day, analyzed the problem, and returned with the part at the time he had scheduled. Russell was polite and responsive. In addition to recommendations on Angie's list we had heard good things about Millwoods from a friend who lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. She had used Millwoods and said that the superintendent of her building uses them often.

No services performed because Millwood didn't have the insurance coverage our building demands. After the first phone contact when we sent them the form and requirements they sent the form back to the building only half filled out. Then they couldn't get the information but never called us to say they couldn't cover it.. Sloppy! Because we had to wait to find out that they didn't have the coverage we lost two days when we could have contacted another company..

[member name removed], We are sorry you did not get the service you asked for but we did try to work with your building's management to satisfy their insurance requirements. Our insurance company made a certificate of insurance based on the information provided but there were apparently information that was missing. We tried to get clarification from the building but they were not helpful and rather than send their requirements to us, they sent it to you. Since we were not able to get the information, we were not able to gain access to your building. Darin Millwood's Appliances.

Although only one technician specialized in our dishwasher brand, the company was able to schedule an appointment on a timely basis. When we needed to reschedule, we were able to secure another appointment for the following business day. Our repair required 2 visits -- one for diagnosis and one for installation of an out-of-stock part -- but we were quoted a flat fee. Both times, the repairman arrived on time and worked efficiently and neatly. Will definitely use them again!

The repairman was polite and efficient. However, I would not recommend Millwood's or use them again because they were two hours late for the appointment. I'd scheduled a 9am - noon appointment. The repairman arrived at 2pm. I called for a status at 10:30am and was told he was on his way. I called again at noon and was told the same thing. They blamed the repairman for not answering his cell, and the repairman blamed the dispatchers. It was very unprofessional.
Description of Work: My 1997 Maytag dishwasher was leaking water. Millwood's diagnosed the problem - a hose had a hole in it. The estimate to repair it was $250, including the $85 fee for the initial visit. The repairman was not able to make the repair that day, since he'd have to order the part. I decided to replace the dishwasher instead of making the repair.

Overall, the work itself was done well...but I was disappointed with the level of communication and also with the final touches on the job...Our 1st appointment was for a Tues. and they came late, after their 4 hour window. They wanted to come Wed. with the part, but I couldn't take off work two days in a row, so I asked for a Thurs. appointment. I called again after they were late and was told that the repairman had a family emergency and couldn't come. I asked for the very first appointment Friday. Sure, they said, and gave me a 3 hour window, 9-12. He wound up coming at 3:00, after many calls to the office. He installed the new hose, but failed to reinstall the vent for the dryer (the whole stacking unit had to be moved for the hose work)...I did this myself, rather than wait for them to do it....
Description of Work: They came and examined our washer and determined that our leaking came from a worn hose. They took the hose back to their office to look for a replacement part in their warehouse... later in the week they returned and installed the new hose. The new hose solved our leak problem.

Repairmen were a bit late due to traffic and were apologetic. Men were clean and very courteous and left job site clean. Real gentlemen. Work was done efficiently. Would recommend this firm to anyone. In addition, prices were very reasonable for this area.
Description of Work: 40 year old dryer stopped running. Was told by another company that it needed new motor, belt and pulley and parts were unavailable. Irreplaceable due to space constraints. This company replaced belt and pulley, fully cleaned trapped lint from inside of drum (machine had to be disassembled) even vacuumed my kitchen walls behind dryer. It went very well. I called the firm and they said a technician was in the area and would be by in a few hours. The technician, Robert, came a few hours later. He was very courteous and restated the terms which I had heard when I first contacted the company, that the basic service call was $80 and that repairs would be additional to that. Once the problem was diagnosed, I bailed out some water, we turned on the power, and the machine worked. Robert closed up the access panels, we settled bill, and that was that. The technician wisely sensed that I had some technical understanding, although I was not able to diagnose the problem on my own. Such customers are often less willing to pay "full freight" and are also willing to participate in the repair. Being able to accommodate such an admittedly less-lucrative customer is good business.
Description of Work: The technician opened up the dishwasher and diagnosed the problem, which was caused by a backed-up kitchen sink. After I had bailed out some water which didn't belong, he closed up the machine.
