Description of Work: They did both packing and moving. At one location there were 2 flights of stairs they had to deal with, and they had to take a door off of the hinges to get the refrigerator in. They packed an entire one bedroom apartment in under 2 hours.

The pick up crew seemed great -- really efficient and professional. Some fragile items were broken when we unpacked after moving, but we did do the packing ourselves so it may have been our fault. But a chair was dinged up and our dresser looks like it has tread marks on it -- definitely not our fault. When the move in removed the wrapping from our mattresses and futon, they CUT the mattresses while slashing away at the wraps. Dealing with customer service was fine, and when we complained about they damages they apologized and directed us to file an insurance claim. Unfortunately we had let the time period elapse so we did not make any claims. All in all, we were most interested in saving money. We didn't own anything really "nice" so it was a calculated risk. Now that we've been given some nice wedding gifts though I'm not sure I'd use them again.
Description of Work: We had furniture and boxes picked up from two different apartments and moved into storage for a couple of weeks. Then everything was moved into a new apartment.

The work was done well and very quickly. A couple of minor complaints: one small item got broken, and they did a poor job labeling the boxes, which made it hard to organize / prioritize unpacking. On the whole, however, I think Flatrate is an excellent choice. There is a lot to be said for having movers who are paid a flat rate instead of by the hour; they have incentive to get done quickly, which saves their time and yours. Even if they cost a bit more than a by-the-hour moving company, the speed and professionalism is worth it.
Description of Work: Moved a one bed room apartment, with full packing. Destination was a few miles from the starting point (in White Plains, NY).

The movers showed up a 30 min early. They called me to see if they could start early, explaining that they had another job shortly. They arrived w/o boxes-no wardrobe boxes, no drawer boxes, and no commercial bin. I asked where these items were and they said that they weren't on my contract (the first page of the contract says that these items would be provided on the day of the move free of charge, however only the commercial bin was listed in my inventory sheet. The contract was somewhat confusing). The movers then began taking my clothes out of my dressers and putting them on the floor. I asked them to stop and they told me that 'movers can do anything... we can take things not on the sheet, but you need to tip us extra'. They were still very fast working, friendly, and took great care of my items, but they brought up the tip quite a few times. So much for 'flat rate, no surprises'. They moved my items over to Brooklyn and unloaded them very quickly, however they did damage a wall in my old apartment that I think they tried to hide by piling clothes from my dressers in front of the damage. I ended up tipping the two movers and a foreman $260 because they kept telling my that my sales man was new and had been lying to customers all week about boxes being included and because I had an extra table that I asked them to take that was supposed to be sold via Craigslist, but the buyer backed out at the last minute. I also repeatedly called Flat Rate throughout the day to try to figure out what was going on with the wardrobe, drawer, and commercial bin, but the main office was closed. Finally on Monday, I called my sales representative who told me that he thought I had declined the free boxes, however the commercial bin should have been included. He said that the movers were probably lazy and didn't want to carry any more items down 5 flights of stairs. At this point, the sales people are blaming the movers and the movers are blaming the sales people. The sales staff asked if they could call me back. They were supposed to call me back later Monday (my move was on Sunday). They didn't call me back Monday or Tuesday (I left messages both days). Finally on Wednesday, I was told to get in touch with customer service (again taking MY time to do something they could easily do). I called and emailed customer service on Wednesday. They promised to investigate and get back to me that day as I explained that my lease was ending on the upcoming Tuesday and I only had a small car and couldn't fit all the clothes, etc that the movers didn't take. Customer service did not call back until 3 on Friday. I missed this call, but called back right away and had to leave a message. On Monday afternoon, I called Customer Service and they explained that I'd have to open a claim for the damage to my apartment and that they'd give me a $100 refund for the inconvenience. I had to make over 30 trips up and down stairs an drive between Bk and Manhattan, $100 didn't cover it.
Description of Work: I was quoted a price of $967 for moving a sofa bed, a loveseat, a plasma TV, a queen bed, two dressers, a bookcase, a nightstand, and two mirrors. Included in the price were wardrobe boxes which the movers were supposed to pack with clothes from our closets, special boxes so that drawers could be removed from my dressers with our clothes still in them, and a commercial bin for last minute odds and ends. I was moving from a 4th floor walkup in Manhattan to a ground floor apartment in Brooklyn. I was advised by the sales representative that the movers would require a 15% tip (as long as I was happy with the service).

We found Flat rate to be very pleasant, helpful and reliable. We were very pleased when their estimate came in at the same rate as other moving companies with much worse reputations. We did have a few minor problems. First, we were informed a day before the delivery was scheduled that we needed to find out if our street could accommodate an 18-wheel truck and that, if not, we would be charged extra to have the furniture loaded onto a smaller truck for delivery. Further, on the day of the delivery, we were told that there would be an extra fee because we are in a second-story walk-up. I completely understand the reasons for both of these fees, and that is not my problem, but I was perturbed that a company with "No Hidden Fees, No Surprises," written on its website would surprise us with hidden fees. I feel that these issues should have been addressed when we received our initial estimate and included then. Also, the movers from Flat rate accidentally gave us a box from somebody else's shipment. They took care of the situation after a few days without too much trouble incurred on our end, but I imagine that it was problematic for the person whose box they had delivered to us.
Description of Work: Flatrate picked up furniture at two locations, one in Connecticut and one in New Jersey, and delivered it to Los Angeles. In total, the furniture amounted to about a studio or one bedroom apartment and included some large pieces but no couch or mattress.

Response from FlatRate Moving
I am Vickie Roehling, Customer Service Manager at FlatRate Moving. I am sorry that the member was surprised by the service charges. However, our confirmation letters, sent immediately after booking - give clear explanations about charges for stairs & shuttles. FlatRate never adds hidden fees. I would be glad to discuss this personally. My direct line is 212-509-0512 x 214.

This company has always done good service for me when it was a local move. However, I moved a long distance and I had a few items stolen and also had water damage to my electronic items. Also, when I used them to move locally, they were able to give me delivery dates, but for some reason they couldn't give me a delivery date for my move to Austin.

Other than some initial issues, that were ultimately resolved, concerning the Certificate of Insurance being forwarded to my coop boards . . . my experience was better than I could ever expect. The rate was as promised - but more significantly, my moving crew - headed by Winston Rosa - was extremely professional, conscientious and careful. Winston was so accommodating and showed a real concern for my belongings and my access to them. As it turned out, the place that I was moving into was undergoing serious renovation . . . upon seeing the mess that they would have to move my stuff into, Winston never missed a beat and got the job done despite the physical challenges. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of service. The crew went above and beyond their call of duty.

We contacted them on their website, filling out the form as requested. Got a callback in a few days, and they offered us a $165/hour rate for 3 men and a truck on a Sunday to arrive between 8 and 10. They arrived at 9 in an unmarked rental truck with graffiti on it. The 3 men clearly had never worked together before, and at least one mentioned that his "regular" job was as a mover for Allied. They wrapped everything carefully, and placed it carefully in their truck. They seemed to move pretty slowly to us, and at best seemed very deliberate. One mover was clearly a pro, and he was extremely hard working, efficient and fast. The other 2, including the "foreman", not so much. They account for the low "Professionalism" score.
Description of Work: Flat rate moved us from Darien CT to North Salem NY. We intended for them to take most, not all of our things, and especially the heavy/awkward items like our large front-load washer & dryer.

Co. rep very attentive & responsive while setting up move. Less responsive as I began to check in on status of delivery. After 2 or 3 emails and a phone call over the course of a week+, I reached him -no apology for not responding or explanation other than he's been in & out - and he tells me he's not the person I want, that the person I want is the long distance manager. I reach this 2nd person and find out he's not the person I want either and am referred to a 3rd person who finally gives me a delivery date plus or minus 2 days. I am not happy. Re: Movers: All very nice young men. Were early on both ends.

The foreman did a great job packing/protecting our shipment. The whole crew worked amazingly hard both days (one for packing and loading, one for unloading). We moved from a small suburban house in CT to an apartment in Manhattan, and the crew was very respectful of rules and neighbors in both places. Thank you!
Description of Work: The crew packed most of our breakables, we had already packed books etc. Flat Rate handles packing electronics, clothes into armoires (which they do not charge for and which they re-use), etc. They loaded and unloaded our shipment.

Everything went absolutely perfectly. They arrived at 8:30AM in Boston (the driver checked in via cell the day prior) and loaded everything extremely efficiently. There were four guys and they were very careful and courteous. They loaded our hang-up clothes into wardrobe boxes, packed our artwork, and were careful with our LCD TV's. Their moving of the piano was most impressive. As for the second stop in Washington Heights, they drove from Boston in only 3 1/2 hours. The driver was aware that my building in midtown restricted moves to before 5PM so he was really anxious to meet the deadline. He arrived in midtown at 3:30 and was unloaded with plenty of time to spare. Not one thing in the move was damaged and they charged exactly what they promised, even though they moved a lot more stuff than was indicated on my inventory. BTW, $2300 was their original quote. They called with a lower rate once they realized they were moving someone else to Boston the day prior.
Description of Work: They picked up half an apartment full of stuff from Boston (including a piano), then picked up the other half of an apartment in Washington Heights, and then dropped everything off in a midtown high-rise.

The movers were GREAT. I was hesitant to use a professional moving company (wanting to use a "man with a van" type mover), but my husband talked me into using a professional and I'm glad we did. Nothing was broken, and they moved us in 4.5 hours, from start to finish. The men didn't complain about the stairs, that our boxes were too heavy, or that we were moving in the rain. They were careful of the new wood floors in our new apartment. Overall I was extremely satisfied. It cost more than an hourly service would have, but these guys had an incentive to move fast and get it done.

Flat Rate was very straight forward about what they did, what they expected from me, and how it was going to go. The estimate was very close to the final total, with the only mistake being my underestimation of my belongings. The guys who picked up the stuff were efficient and courteous as well as fast - they were done within 90 minutes. My stuff arrived about 10 days later on the west coast in good condition and with no problems.

I ended up not going with Flat rate, because, although I've heard great things about their moving practices, the whole haggling process for the cost turned me off. was originally quoted $1500-$2500 for my 1 bedroom move, and after many email exchanges, they came down under $900.00. I would have rather just been quoted a lower amount initially, as I might have given them more weight and had a better idea what to compare to. Although this process might work well for some, I found it frustrating at a time when all I was looking for was relief from frustration. If you work with them in the future, you can always talk them down.

That estimate was half of the price that other companies were asking. They were very professional and detail oriented during their presentation. The cost was just too high for the services preformed in my opinion. For that reason, I opted to use another moving company and I would not go with this company. For a one truck, fifteen minute move, the cost was too high. Many people in the area like this company because they give you a flat rate but if that is super high, it is not worth it to me.
Description of Work: This moving company gave us an estimate on moving fifteen minutes from our old three story NYC home into our new NYC home. They came to our home to give us an estimate. They wanted $2600 for this move.

The estimate went fairly smoothly, but the company did not follow through. I also had multiple people calling me to schedule an estimate after the move had already been scheduled and booked in the system. They seem very disorganized.
Description of Work: Flat Rate completely fell through! I scheduled a move for tomorrow and they still have not delivered boxes that they committed to delivering on Friday and then committed again to deliver yesterday. I had to cancel and look for another mover to do a last minute job and, like the previous poster, I am now stuck dealing with my leasing company. I have not been able to speak to my move coordinator directly for over a week, despite leaving repeated phone calls and e-mail messages. I would stay away from these guys and go with one of the more reputable movers.

Horrible. We had agreed in advance that the mover would bear the cost of a ticket if the movers had to double-park (a common incident in Manhattan). They arrived in the afternoon, and when they couldn't find a parking spot, they refused to do the move, leaving me high and dry and forcing us to overstay our lease. Extremely unprofessional!

Overall everything went perfectly. Flatrate is an amazing company. The men were friendly and they were very professional. They took very good care of my things and were delicate in their move. Everything was thought about and how to move it. I highly recommend them to everyone.
Description of Work: Flatrate moving company is the best. I have moved around New York City about 4 times and they were the best moving company I have ever worked with. Like their name, Flatrate gives you a flat rate, unlike other moving companies and do the job right. They moved me from the Upper East Side to Gramercy Park and did a fantastic job. They arrived on time to my old apartment and packed everything up in a fast but careful manner. They were very quick with what they were doing. They took care of my delicates, like jewelry and old furniture. And made sure nothing would break. When I arrived at my new apartment, which is a bit smaller than my old apartment, they helped me unpack some boxes to give me more space, with no extra cost. As I unpacked everything, nothing was broken. I was so pleased with the whole moved. I would recommend them to everyone.

A representative showed up on time for our appointment and assessed my move and sent me an e-mail later that day with an estimate. On the day of my move, the movers showed up on time. They were nice and very professional. They handled everything with care and nothing was broken or damaged. They took apart my canopy bed to move it, and put it back together perfectly in my new apartment. they even made sure I was happy with the placement of my furniture. The movers were very nice, and they didn't bother me about tipping them the entire time. When they were done, I was happy to tip them well. I had a very positive experience with this company. On a day that is usually pretty stressful, it was nice not to have to worry about how much it was going to cost me. In the end, my price was actually lower than the original quote, because of the volume of moves they had that day. I would definitely recommend Flatrate for anyone moving.

The move went very well. We had three movers, which in retrospect was maybe one man short of what they really needed. The movers we had were very professional and polite and were careful with our belongings. They worked continually without taking breaks - we were practically forcing them to eat lunch, but they kept refusing.
Description of Work: We moved from a one bedroom to a two bedroom. A few weeks before the move an estimator came to the apartment to provide an estimate. He followed up the next day to make sure we received it (it was sent by email) and again a few days later to see if we had any questions. On the day of the move, Flatrate packed all of our breakables - china/crystal/glasses. They also prepped all of our furniture (disassembled and wrapped) and then re-assembled at the new apartment and put the furniture in place.
