In the 3 months I was employed with gm I witnessed my trainers quiting, leaving a band of trainees working on a house we had no idea what we was doing. 2 months after my hire I completed my classes & returned to work only to have no supplies and no boss in sight. When we did have supplies, I remember the boss telling me to run weather installation rolls to the top floor to get them out of sight. Turns out that's not what the owner ordered. Scam!. After 3 weeks of no suplies & the home owner asking the trainees what's going on, I took some time off for health issues the I was co ered for & then the boss pop up and fire me for no reason. After a year of lies and fighting gm in unemployment court I won. p.s. Sorry for miss spells and typos. Old pda. Thx
Description of Work: I was an ex-employee of gm. I was hired as a trainee and worked for gm for 3 months.

We found this contractor on Service Magic.com, he is about 20 miles out of our area. Met with him and liked the young entrepreneur who wanted to get work. He talked a big game. One error we made- we did not have building plans, but he said he could build from the picture of a gambrel-roof barn we gave him. The ground-breaking went well. Building was shut down for lack of FEMA flood plain permit, which we didn't know we needed. Builder had not contacted the Inspector, so that did not go well. From then on, rain messed up the forms put in the ground for footers, builder said we wouldn't need footers, he went down to bedrock, and filled up plywood formed walls with cement, which ended up out of square and wavy on the sides. Walls on top of walls did not fit properly, so builder added cinder blocks in some areas, which are not caulked, and air can blow through. The crew showed up from 2-4 days a week, 10 am usually, not in a consistent timetable, no supervision mostly, 1-3 young hirees. Original completion date was November, and it was almost May when building appeared closed in. We had to change rental truck reservations 3 times in order to move our collectibles into a building that didn't have a front wall when we finally brought the inventory. We wanted to support this young man, and we ended up paying $40,000++ for a building that is not useable for the purpose we built it. We are very disheartened at this lack of professionalism and character. We are not taking action against him because we don't want him or his people on our property anymore. We can't believe they would fix anything which they did wrong in the first place. We made 3 errors here: not having drawings, not finding out about Permits needed, and not making him stop and having him start over when the footers were out of kilter. GM Construction and Gary McDowell can take responsibility for these problems with our building, but he doesn't. He does not call back, nor answer emails. and I assume that means he thinks he is done here. My only reason for reporting all of this on Angie's List is to prevent other homeowners from hiring this company.
Description of Work: GM Construction built a barn 30 x 36, 2-story, intended for museum-type display of large collection. Gambrel-roof style was selected, to use the upstairs slant-walls for display. Roof trusses were built so that interior walls upstairs were added, eliminating the benefits of gambrel roof, resulting in a 20 x 36 room, eliminated the 4x36 areas on each side of the wall, from anything but crawl space storage. There were no vents put into the roof, so the 30-year shingles I picked out will not last 30-years. From the beginning, footers were not formed properly, and blew out, leaving uneven walls, wavy and not level. Builder contined from there, with eveyrthing off-kilter from then on. Finished product is not square by about 12" at front wall, which they made up by adding cinder blocks, walls jutted out, ending up on left front side off foundation by 6" forward, right front side 2". Siding sheets are already buckling and this has not even been 6 mos. since completion. Exterior wall is not closed off at the bottom, where it juts out from the foundation. Interior wall shows opening between cement blocks of 1/2" to 1" between cement blocks and poured wall, which is wavy. Cement floor very off-level, insulation paid for & not installed; building should be torn down, but we can't afford that. We can use this for storage only after we put in insulation; floor is off-level by about 2" from side to side, so can't install showcases or bookshelves. .
