My mother's roof was damaged by hurricane Sandy and needed immediate attention. I obtained 3 price quotes by Angie's List's contractors. All used the same roofing materials. Highlander was the most competitive price ($6500-$7000-$7200). They replaced the roof within a week of my calling, despite high demand by other customers. Highlander removed the existing roof and installed the new roof within a day. Their employees were neat and professional. Bob (owner) was friendly, professional, and explained the process thoroughly. His receptionist was also very knowledgeable and friendly.

Got several estimates and theirs was the lowest although that wasn't why we went with Highlander. The entire project was described in detail, including the underlays and venting. We accepted their bid just before Hurricane Sandy hit and they showed up 3 weeks later, which was remarkable given the amount of emergency work that they must have had. The job was to be completed in one day; they showed up at about 7:30 as planned and were done at about 1:30.

Highland Roofing were professional, they answered my questions, and they weren't overly aggressive or pushy which is what I like. I inquired about different options and he was very cooperative and if I wanted to something different he would listen and work with me.

Since this was an expensive job, the homeowner should be present and ask questions as the job progresses throughout the day. Bob the owner was always responsive to my questions and coincerns.
Description of Work: Remove three layers of shingles and wood from house and garage and replace with new wood sheathing, fiberglass shingles etc., and new gutters and leaders. Job took two days. Bob and his crew were professional and were responsive to my questions before and during the work. I recommend that homeowner be present and ask questions during the removal and installation. The recent Storm Sandy did not remove one shingle, and this is a credit to Bob and the Highlander team.

We are very happy with the work that was done. They were prompt, professional, and did exactly what they said they would. Our power went out and they brought generators to finish the work on time. The project was completed in a day and the roof looks great. I would definitely hire Highlander again.
Description of Work: We hired Highlander to replace the roof of our home. I read the reviews and after getting a number of bids, we chose Highlander because of the good feedback and competitive price.

lRobert Colquhoun came to give price for the roofing at the time he said he would. He was the only roofer to get a ladder out and climb up and check the condition of the plywood and measure. I felt confident in his ability to handle the job in a professional manner. Roofing day, crew shows up at 7:30, 10 men wasted no time during the day. Completed the job by 5pm. Paid Bob for a great job so i thought!!!. 12 o'clock next day heavy rain. I have four skylights on my house that have NEVER leaked. One of the four didn't just leaked it rained in on all four corners of the skylight on to my living room furniture and wood floor. Call to Bob, said that he and two workers would be here ASAP. They came within 2 hours and repaired the leak in the 2 skylights in the back of my home, Bob never did show up!!!. 2 weeks later when Bob did come he was apologetic and said it was one of his new guys on the crew. So i ask him because of what happened on the rear skylights could he caulk the 2 front skylights, no problem. 3 weeks later no Bob, another call, i forgot we will be there within the week. It is now 3 weeks later and no Bob. At this point i don't want Bob. I don't fault the worker that made the the mistake. I fault BOB for his lack of follow thru when there is a problem on a job that wasn't even 24 hrs old no less 12 months or 12 years. My mistake for thinking he was the right contractor for the job..

Response from Highlander Roofing
Within 2 hrs of receiving [member name removed] call about a leak, I had a crew up on his roof to repair the problem. We did so successfully, as subsequent storms revealed. I met him at the house a short time later so he could vent his ander on me in person, which he did for over an hour. I apologized for his inconvenience and offered to pay for any damages ----there were none. I believe we handled this situation in a timely and thorough manner.

Robert Calhoun runs the operation and he runs it well. He wasa professional from start to finish. He arrived as scheduled to inspect the roof and provide an estimate. The estimate was slightly below the 3 others we received but we didn't select him for that reason alone. He was patient and professional when describing the job and it's cost to my elderly mom and her friend. On the day of the job he and his crew arrived promptly at 7am and went right to work. Despite a lousy forecast Bob was confident that they would able to complete the job that day and roughly 10 hours later, they did. He obviously has a committed crew who is dedicated to hard work. There wasn't much chit chatting and break taking happening during the day. It appears that they did a quality job and clean up was good as well. I paid exactly what he quoted me originally. I have no complaints about the experience and I would recommend Highlander to anyone looking for a roofer in the area.

Does not treat his customers well after the work is done.
Description of Work: His Warranty not worth the paper its written on as he does not back up his words with actions. If you use him pray you don't need him to come back. I am updating my review below because i had the occasion to badly need Mr. Coghloun of Highlander Roofing to service the roof he installed only in the end of July 2012. When Superstorm Sandy hit in late October a tree in my front yard came down on the roof. I was lucky that it did not go through the roof but it did do structural damage to two rafters and punched a small hole in the roof. I was fortunate to get a tree removal service to my home a couple of days later who told me of the small hole when the tree was removed. While that was happening I called Mr. Colghloun on his cell phone to see if i could get him to my house for an estimate (my two neighbors also had damage and he could have done both new roofs along with my repair). To my shock he picked up on the 3rd ring and when i described my damage he said he had damage to his own roof but will try to get to my house early the next week. In the meantime I patched the hole myself as a Noreaster was forecast and waited...and waited. I called a gain and left numerous messages without a response. Mind you, I was well aware of the devastation many people were dealing with and stressed in my messages I was only looking for an estimate so I could get things moving with my insurance company. My wife called numerous times and spoke to him twice, each time he promised he would be by in a few days and each time he disappointed us. I finally contacted another company who provided an estimate so i caould proceed with my insurance co. and only last week was able to get the work done almost 2 1/2 months after the storm. To add insult to injury this morning I was walking my dog and who do I see replacing a roof around the corner from me but Highlander Roofing. It p***** me of that my review below could have possibly aided in him getting that job. I cornered Mr. Coloughn aired my grievance and he apologized (alot of good that did me). The bottom line. He could be the best roofer in the world but it means squat if he does not stand behind his work or treat his returning customers with the decency of a phone call. Thats why I changed my rating from an A to a D. First, I cannot say enough about how working with Highlander has restored my faith in contractors in general and specifically roofers. From my first phone call to paying for the roof it easily the most stress free project I have ever had done on my home. Robert was always courteous and patient explaining what, why, and how he was going to do replace my roof and solve my water leak issues. Highlander was not the cheapest but they were definitely not the most expensive (one roofer came in and quoted $10,000 and when I told him he was way out of line he immediately dropped it down to $8000). Robert did not even request down payment. he just said pay me when the job is done. I asked for proof if general liability and workers comp insurance (something everyone should require before a contractor starts work) and had it in my hads within 12 hours. His workers were at my house at 7:30AM and started work at 8 sharp. By 3:00 PM the old roof was taken off, a new attic fan was installed, a new GAF roof was in place, the gutters cleaned, and the grounds were free of any debris. Two hours later Robert came but to pick up his payment and the job was complete. I commented on how fast his men worked and he told me he actually bought in two extra workers (a total of 6) because the forecast was for strong thundershowers by late afternoon. So far we have had some strong rains since July and no leaks. The roof looks great and the attic fan is much quieter than the one we had. I think I found 6 or 7 nails and a few pieces of roof shingle in the first week after the installation but nothing since.

Response from Highlander Roofing
Immediately after Superstorm Sandy, our office was flooded with thousands of calls requesting service for storm damage. Hundreds were from our own customers who got hit by trees. We worked 7 days a week until the snowstorms came, including Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Not every one was able to be seen in a timely manner, which is a source of deep regret and frustration for us.

We asked for estimates from 4 companies, Robert was the first one to provide the estimate, the price was competitive among others. We also liked the way Robert explained how the job will be performed in detail. After we have confirmed the date with Robert, the workers showed up on time and the job was completed as described. Overall all was a good experience

We called three companies for estimates. All were good, but we were impressed with Rob's thorough approach to our particular situation. The workers arrived on time, were careful with our flowers and other possessions, were courteous and pleasant, and they cleaned up the property beautifully. The job was done within one day, as promised. We recommend Highlander most enthusiastically.

They had very, very competitive pricing & brought references. These references, like many other companies I worked with, offered to have me come by & see the work this company did because they were so proud of the finished project. When he came for the estimate/interview for the work, he said, "When we work, we do it in one day." I needed work done pretty immediately as there were two leaks, one in the dining room & one in the attic & there was other work waiting for this part of the project to be done. They worked with the other companies I was using to make sure all the projects I had going were coordinated. They said they'd come over early in the morning with a large crew, rip everything out, fix & patch as necessary, & re-roof before leaving that same day. They came, measured everything, had everything they needed. He showed me where wood was rotting & what needed to be fixed. They were so careful. They covered the ground to make sure nothing was damaged. They even asked me where our dry wells & septic systems were to make sure they're heavy trucks didn't damage anything underground! They cleaned up amazingly well & didn't leave me with a mess. He came back on a separate trip with an extra box of shingles at no cost - He definitely went the extra mile.
Description of Work: I have a 4000 sq ft house that needed a new roof, including overhangs. I also had smaller shed roofs & a deck roof. I found a person who was recommended by the person who built my portico.

I interviewed 5 roofers and chose Bob and Highlander for the following reasons: 1) He was one of only 2 roofers that even bothered to go up on my roof to give an estimate. I felt with this there would be less surprises with someone who actually went up on the roof. 2) He had roofer's insurance which is separate and much more expensive than the standard contracting insurance. This covered me if someone got hurt on my property during the job. 3) He was very direct in his answers with all the questions I asked. He also loved talking "roofing." 4) He gave me a max price if all my roofing wood plywood pane had to be replaced. It capped my exposure. Many roofers give you a base price then a per panel price without knowing how many roof panels they will need to replace. With 50 roof plywood panels at $45 each you can see how that could add $2,250 to a job. 5) His charges for panel plywood per piece was $20-$40 LESS than the other roofers that quoted. He wasn't using it as a profit center. 6) With this quote including the replacing all the roof plywood panels, He was one of the lowest quotes. Upon seeing the finished product you can tell his crew took pride in the job. My roof had soft spots and was a little uneven. He mentioned to me they put up some supporting beams next to my existing beams because they could not get a level roof with my existing beams. I waited for him to mention the extra charge, there was none. He also mentioned to me during the 8-day rain storm of 2005, he was overwhelmed with 2,000 calls, but took his previous customers first, which showed me loyalty and a customer commitment. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Completely stripped down my roof to the supporting beams, and installed a completely new roof from the plywood up. My house is an inline ranch, 30 x 40 ft. with a hip roof.

Bob came in to give us an estimate which was very competitive. We couldn't decide on the shingle color, so he provided us with the actual shingle samples and the complete list of all of his jobs, so we could drive around and look at the shingle color on different roof types. The job was done quickly and professionally. Would totally hire him again and recommend to others.

The job was done in one day and the owner of Highlander was extremely helpful and agreed to all the changes I made to the original agreement. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain every step of the rip off of the current roof and the installation of the new. His crew was so neat that my property looked better after they left then it did before they arrived. I cannot say enough about the great work they did.
Description of Work: I had a new roof installed after the removal of a two layer roof. The roof was shot and it was leaking. UPDATE: I had highlander install a new attic fan which has not come on this season. I called to ask if there is something that I need to do or was the temp set to high and never received a reply or a call back.

Bob was one of the only roofers that actually went up on my roof to preform the estimate. He fully explained the roofing process and what he thought our roof required. The roofers came on time a few weeks later and started work right away. When it came time for the payment, there was no additional costs added. Bob stood by his estimate. The only thing negative about our experience was that although the roofers cleaned up the driveway well, they left a lot of nails in the backyard grass. Although, I am not sure can be avoided anyway.. I can't really account for quality b/c while I know he used quality materials..it is a new roof and only time will tell.

The roofing job went very well and we are pleased with our roof. However, along the way the managed to kill a couple of our shrubs as they would drop old roofing material on the ground. Later, when there was an issue with ice build up on a small area of the roof, we could not get them to address it to our satisfaction. Within the last year I have tried to get them to repair missing ridge vent shingles (caused by raccoon?) and they do not respond to my requests, even though I am willing to pay for the repair. Overall, they will do a very fine job of roofing, but don't count on them to come back in the future and do any minor work on their previously installed work. They won't return calls, and if you manage to get a hold of them they will just give you lip service.
