About us

Thanks for Checking us out unfortunately we don't do and lawn maintenance, lawn cutting, clean ups or services like that. But we would love to help with your other projects. Scott Anderson is a Landscape Designer based in Long Island, New York. While earning his Bachelor of Architecture degree at the New York Institute of Technology, Scott met and later worked for Michel & Assoc., one of Long Island's foremost Landscape Architecture firms. He spent over 6 years working there as a Landscape Designer / Project Manager until leaving in 2003 to establish Scott Anderson Design, Inc. Since starting the company, Scott has taken on both small & large jobs including both residential & commercial work. Having a background that spans architecture as well as landscape design gives him a unique advantage when looking at both sides of a job. Scott's ideas and designs are aimed at creating private spaces for you and your family in what would otherwise be a normal backyard. After sitting down with you to discuss ideas for your project, Scott will then create a couple of designs for you to choose from. Then he will prepare a set of production drawings used for bidding the job and getting work costs from different contractors. From there he can oversee and manage the job on your behalf—working for you from start to finish—until you are sitting in your own private paradise. Scott Anderson Design handles projects that range from small front yard renovations costing under $10,000 to large residential & commercial designs of entire landscapes costing upwards of $250,000. They can work with any budget to develop a project and can even recommend or even select and oversee your job on your behalf. Scott Anderson is a member of the NSLGA. He has represented homeowners in front of town & village boards on jobs that must be approved. Not all jobs need board approval, but for the times they do you can be at ease with him representing you.

I have seen many professional landscape designs as an employee at SUNY Farmingdale, that has a Horticulture program. He would have flunked out. He even offered me "Organic" topsoil. Topsoil is Dirt. All dirt is organic! This deal and Scott Anderson were a scam. Maybe he does a decent job if you pay his price and are ok with a doodle for a design plan. Me? I want my money back, this offer was absurd! He even called me repeatedly to ask when I wanted to schedule the job. As if! Angie's list and this deal let me down.
Description of Work: I bought the $199. Deal for a "design consultation complete with professional sketch of plan" Mr. Anderson spent about 13 minutes in my yard, doodling on a piece of 5" x 7" piece of yellow lined notebook paper. He called a week later and asked if I was "going with sod or not" as that was what was holding up his estimate and drawing. I agreed to sod and then received an Email listing a bunch of plants he would use, which was somewhat vague, "12 shade plants" "3 assorted sun plants" and so on. I also rec'd. The very same notepad "doodle" I.e., "professional drawing" promised. along with an absurd estimate of $12,000. I was not going to submit this review. But then I read a review here from a $79. Deal purchaser who also was dissatisfied with the drawing. He responded here that she didn't pay enough for a professional drawing. Well, I paid $199. Was that enough for a professional drawing? Mine just had arrows pointing to spots where plants would be placed. Not a landscape design at all.

Response from Scott Anderson Design
So we meet with any and spend almost an hour walking around the property, we listened to all the areas that she wanted to develop, a raised garden bed, new low maintenance planting beds in the front yard, a shade garden under a large tree in the rear yard. An extended dog run, new lawn options, seed or sod. We then went and drew up a sketch of what we would plant for the front and rear yard as well as a detailed proposal that was a lump sum of 12,000. But a proposal that was broken down into A handful of different areas with a separate price for each area. Because she said she didn't have a lot of money to spend. So we broke the proposal down so she could maybe afford a small portion to start. We did call to follow up (4 times over 2 weeks, but never receive a phone call at all back. She never even responded to the drawing as we asked in Our email to talk about options and plants selected, let alone the different prices we sent her. I guess if we could rate customers I would have to give her a low rating herself for not ever calling us back or even asking 1 single question. And all soil is not considered organic. There is different types of soil. I'm always able to talk and help out but not if we don't receive a single response from The owner.

Scott was professional. I did not get the Landscaping done with this company. I chose a different company. The price was much higher for the estimate. Also he provided simpler design and services (I probably did not need anything fancy). But this service could have been provided for free (estimate on landscaping design and cost). I received landscaping design and estimate for free from other providers who were lesser in price. I did not think this service that he provided (landscaping design) was worth it since it could have been done for free.
Description of Work: He provided an estimate for Landscaping. The $79 was paid through Angieslist.

[Member Name Removed], purchased a big deal for a landscape design. Unfortunately the area he was looking to have designed was a very small area. If he had contacted me directly I wouldn't have charged him for the design as it was just 1 small area in-front of the house. But he purchased the deal on angies list and we did provide him with a design and a proposal for the work in a very timely manor. He needed his yard to be leveled out and alot of topsoil brought in for the new sod lawn. Our biggest expense was the leveling the existing soil work and organic top soil spreading. I can assume if others were less. they were not doing that portion of the job as thorough as we were planning on doing it. Im sorry we weren't able to help him with this project. thanks any way

The Deal describes a conceptual landscape design valued at $250 for $79. Scott came out on May 6th and we discussed what we wanted as well as options for a circular driveway and the backyard. He took measurements and indicated he would get a design to me in about 2 weeks. I reached out to him on May 26th as I hadn't received it. on May 31st he sent me a proposal and one "sketch" of the front with a circular option. the sketch is totally unacceptable. It is a hand drawing that I could have done myself. Nothing is to scale nor are the plants shown nor materials list included. Based on this "sketch" I am unable to determine what the finished product will look like. I thought I would get a design in which everything is to scale. I spoke with Scott today and I was told that was what I got for $79. After much discussion I realized I would not get anything further from him and asked for a refund. I was told to contact Angie's List. I am requesting a full refund. Respectfully submitted, Dawn Lewis

So [member name removed] purchased a big deal and we meet with her to look at her project. Unfortunately the type of drawing that was offered with the $79 dollar deal was a much more simple type of drawing/ sketch. She was hoping for a more detailed type of drawing for her to be able to get a visual of what the project would look like. When she expressed her concern about the visual look of the drawing, we offered her the other type of drawing's we can prepare and what there costs would be. She decided not to invest in the more detail drawings. Unfortunately we had different ideas about what the deal was for so i told her to ask for a refund. I don't think that deserves a bad rating as we did event finish the design for her. We just had different ideas of what was expected with the big deal.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that we purchased. He came punctually. He was very knowledgeable and he took his time with us. We were very happy with him in that respect. Due to our own financial situation, we are not ready to commit to having the work done that he has proposed but he has kept in contact with us. He hasn't been pushy but he has been supportive. He has been very good so far. He got in touch with us immediately and we had one or two dates that we had to cancel. We have nothing to say against him in that respect. It was our time lag, not his. There were no additional charges. He really knows his business. He does his plants and his bugs. He knows what does and doesn't work and he knows why it doesn't work. We did not get any other estimates.
Description of Work: We used Scott Anderson Design to give us a full evaluation of what we have and he suggested to us what we might do. He sent us a different proposal for what we might do for the front and back.

We contracted with Scott for a large project with a bill well upwards of $10,000. He produced a design that worked well for us, and we gave him the go ahead to plant at the most appropriate time. He planted everything right before the winter, a few weeks before freezing temperatures began. Almost all of the bushes and perennial flowers that were planted made it through the winter, but all thirteen Leyland Cypress trees that were planted died over the winter. It was very clear to us and to our landscaper that the trees had not made it. However, when we called Scott at the end of March, he inspected the trees and said that they were alive and merely ?wind burned?. The trees quickly turned from mostly brown to completely brown, at which time Scott returned and said that they were dead. Even though Home Depot, Hicks, and just about any nursery you can find guarantees shrubs and trees for the first year, Scott offers no guarantee at all. Furthermore, he does not guarantee his work or stand by his decision when to plant. A quick web search reveals that Leyland Cypresses are especially sensitive to cold temperatures, particularly when the plants are young. Even though these were the only plants on our property that did not make it through the winter, Scott did not feel that he planted them at the wrong time. Personally, I see no other explanation why all thirteen of one species could have died, while every other flower, bush and shrub that was planted could have made it. If they had been planted in April, they would very likely be alive at this moment, with a greater ability to survive the next winter. Instead of offering to replace the trees free of charge, or even at half price, Scott quoted us a replacement price that would supposedly include free installation labor. After making a few phone calls to growers and nurseries, we found Scott?s replacement price to be much higher, more than twice as high, as other quotes that we were given. We did not accept his proposal, and we asked Scott to remove the dead trees that he had planted. By the middle of May, he had not yet come, and we took care of removing the trees on our own. We were not impressed with the level of service provided, and we will not be using this contractor again.

Response from Scott Anderson Design
I respectfully disagree with how [member name removed] has reviewed and evaluated my business. [member name removed] hired my company in the fall of 2013; we established a design scheme and time table to re-landscape her property. We began the work in late October and the job was completed by early winter. When the job was done, all the plantings looked healthy and ready for the winter. Unfortunately, this past winter on Long Island was very cold, windy, and snowy. The type of weather Long Island endured during the winter of 2013/14 can be very destructive to plant life. Luckily for Kerry, the majority of her new plants survived. Sadly, her Leyland Cypress’ did not. This winter was exceptionally cold, and even well established plants had difficulty as a result of the extreme cold and wind. It appears her Leylands dried out as a result of a prolonged winter, where the ground remained frozen from start to finish. In early spring Kerry asked me to look at her Leylands, at that point they hadn’t completely browned out, but in the following week they died from winter stress. As a courtesy to Kerry, I offered to remove and replant new Leylands at no charge. I only asked that she pay the grower’s discounted price for the replacement plants. After such a harsh winter it’s understandable that the newly planted Leylands weren’t able to survive. Never the less, I stand behind my company’s work and offered my services at no charge. My grower’s price is vey competitive, only $150 per plant for tress that are 8-9’ tall. Most nurseries in the area will charge $250+ for a tree like that. Unfortunately, she could not afford to replace the plants at this time. If and when she’s ready to replace them, my offer to plant them at no charge stands. We don’t offer guarantees for plants and trees because we aren’t there to care for them after we leave. We provide homeowners with the necessary guidelines to care for, and maintain their plants once we have completed a job. Occasionally, there are times when plants unexpectedly die due to no fault of the homeowner. In those cases we use our professional discretion to determine if a plant should be replaced. If we plant something, and within a brief period of time and under normal conditions, the plant fails to thrive, we’ll gladly talk to the grower and work to replace those failing plants. Unlike Home Depot or Hicks, we don’t inflate our plant prices in order to cover loss and returns. Our goal is to provide a cost effective way for homeowners to do professionally installed large and small scale design and planting projects. In order to provide blanket guarantees for plants and trees, we would have to raise prices significantly. I’m truly sorry Kerry’s Leylands didn’t survive the winter; I will gladly replant new ones, or any other plant she likes, as long as she purchases the replacement plants. This was a 12k project and all but Kerry’s Leylands, 1/6th of the total work, survived one of the worst winters in Long Island’s History. I don’t feel my company deserves an F rating for the job we did for Kerry. I’ve been attentive in my follow up, and I’ve tried to find an amicable way to resolve this to both parties satisfaction.

I purchased the "Big Deal" because I have a larger unfinished backyard and was looking for a little guidance on how to finish it off. Scott reached out to me shortly after I purchased the big deal in order to set up an appointment. Scott arrived on time for our meeting and took his time walking the property with me. I told him what I was hoping to accomplish and he had a number of helpful suggestions. After we spoke for a bit he took measurements and some photographs of the property. Scott delivered a plan based on our discussions the next day. It was professionally done and accurately reflected our discussions. There were a couple of changes that I asked to have incorporated which he was able to do within the next couple of days. Scott is very professional and I would work with him again.

We were very satisfied with the goods and services provided. However, we were very concerned about doing the work so late in the season. Scott advised us this was standard practice, and not to be concerned. However, he would only guarantee the evergreens, not all the other plants. When spring arrives and all plants are alive and well, I will upgrade this review to an Overall A.

I met with Scott about re-landscaping the front of our house, which is a relatively small area. We spoke for about a half hour. I liked Scott and looked forward to working with him. A day or two later, he sent a design sketch that was OK. (Almost anything would be better than what we have now!) His e-mail message correctly--and fairly--acknowledged that he'd be able to complete the job in one day--not a week, and that "part" of the $1,499 that I had already paid for a week of labor would go towards the plants he suggested. However, when I looked over his actual estimate for additional costs for the shrubs, it seemed exorbitant, at best. I just spoke with Scott. I told him that over the years, I've bought many of the types of shrubs that he suggested. They're dirt cheap. (To be certain, I also checked both wholesale and retail prices for those types and sizes of plants.) Scott is a nice guy, and based on his reviews on Angie's list, I assume he would have done a good job. But unfortunately, due to his high prices, I won't be using his services.

Just to clarify, the deal was for 40 hours of service. Which I said my crew would finish the work in 1 day which Works out to approximately 32 hours of time with my full 4 man crew onsite. So she would have gotten a Small amount as credit toward the plants. I explained the difference of Home Depot plants and the "Cheap plants" (high end nursery grown) I proposed. I gave her the best price I could but she wasn't happy. So I said she can get a complete refund. Her giving us a grade of C , when we were trying to be very accommodating is wrong.

Scott Anderson was a pleasure to work with. He responded really well from the first estimate right through to the last day of installation. He worked within our budget by utilizing cobblestones that were already on premises and relocating plants that had survived the storm damage as well as providing beautiful new trees, shrubs and perennials. We were very excited to finally have our large property revitalized after so much loss from Hurricane Sandy. We are extremely happy with the outcome and highly recommend Scott's services.

After receiving three proposals for the job I chose Scott Andersons Designs. All the prices I had received were very comparable, but I liked Scott?s design and professionalism the best. His proposal was the most comprehensive and detailed, which he had quickly emailed me after our first meeting. Scheduling the work was easy as well. Scott kept in touch with me with his availability and began the job as planned. He and his small crew completed the job within three days. I was not home while they did the work and it was such a wonderful surprise to see the progress each day. All the plantings he chose were beautiful and healthy. One of my main reasons for doing the work was to create a natural screen to hide a neighbor?s house that is in a state of disrepair. His choices of plantings do exactly that and are so pleasant to look at. Now when I sit on my deck I see a beautiful botanical landscape. It?s been a couple of months and all the plants are healthy and have new growth on them. Scott was a pleasure to deal with. He was always patient in answering my questions, very personable, very knowledgeable, and professional. I would highly recommend him and I definitely plan on using him for the rest of my backyard in the future. Thank you, Scott!
Description of Work: Scott designed new plantings for my front, side, and a section of my backyard. He and his team removed several overgrown shrubs from my front yard and a long row of Barberry shrubs from my side yard. In my front yard they planted 3 Inkberry shrubs, 1 golden arborviate, 3 Anthony Water Sprea, 1 Little Gem Spruce, a Compact Hinoki Cypress, and a nice variety of perennials (10 in all). In my side and back yards they planted 12 Skip Laurels, 6 Knockout Roses, a beautiful Thundercloud Plum Tree, a Golden Arborviate, and 2 Spirea.

He worked within my budget and even went so far as to add 3 large annuals as a "thank you". I didn't even need to be home while his team took care of my "circle of dirt" and transformed it into a beautiful vignette on my front lawn. I was more than pleased when I came home from work and saw the final result. Scott provided some helpful care instructions and advice for the future of the landscaped area post completion which I very much appreciated. . I have even intention of continuing to call on Scott for my future lanscaping needs.

I am using him. He is pretty good. I like him. I would recommend him. We are going to finalize the price on Monday. I would say the price is average. I used the reviews on Angie's list and he showed me his portfolio. He seemed like a good guy.
Description of Work: I use the services of Scott Anderson Design. I am doing a very large project with him. It could take two years. He has just done all the drawings. I have worked with him consistently. He will be retaining a wall for us. He did a complete landscape design for my back yard. That includes a pool, ground levelling and all the shrubs and bushing.
