+ 2 moreDescription of Work: When I interviewed Brett for my renovation, I specifically asked him if he would be onsite when the work was being done. I also asked him if he used temporary, day laborers. I was concerned about liability. Should his insurance lapse and a worker was hurt on my property, I could be sued. He assured me that he only worked one job at a time; he would be there when all construction was done unless he was giving an estimate, and all his workers worked for him at least a year. I found all three statements to be untrue. I asked one of his workers how long he had worked for Brett and was told one month– his regular job was installing sprinklers. On December 12, 2012 I signed a contract for $ 28,600 and I gave him $6,000. When I signed the contract there was not a payment schedule included; with a total, lump sum price. I asked him for a price breakdown; Bret said “not a problem. It took several weeks to get the breakdown and I needed the homeowners/flood on separate proposals When I received the breakdown I realized the roof was several thousand dollars more than other quotes. My garage was estimated at 4.1 squares and the house was 11 squares according to a Home Depot proposal. Brett came in at 6 squares for the garage and 14 squares for the home. I questioned Brett about this and he agreed to give me a credit of $695; dropping the price to $7,905. The roof was tarped by a different contractor because I had quite a bit of exposed plywood. They replaced the roof on Feb 7, 2013. They were supposed to replace all the exposed wood on the house, and the rotted wood under the eaves on the garage – they did neither. Brett informed me AFTER the roof was done that there “was no rot” so the plywood was not replaced. That wood was exposed since Sandy. As far as the garage roof; instead of the replacing full length of rotted wood, all they did was cut out a 4’ area that had holes in it. I was not on site when the roof was done – and neither was Brett. He was not giving an estimate, he was out of state. When I complained to him about not replacing the plywood or rotted wood his response was - and I quote – “You should have been there.” I gave JMG contracting (Brett Melelli) a total of $14,000 as payment towards a renovation that was scheduled to be approximately $32,000 - to include leveling the 1st floor by sistering the beams. Brett removed the floor down to the beams, removed sheetrock and insulation from the 2' to 4' mark. I had already removed sheetrock and insulation from the floor to 2' mark. JMG also gutted the 1/2 bath and removed 5 interior doors. In the kitchen he was supposed to remove and save appliances and lower cabinetry. The total demo was $3950.00. I had a full size 24”wide refrigerator panel. When they removed the cabinetry they cut the panel most of the way through making it impossible to use. Brett never mentioned this problem to me, and when I asked him about it he said it was no big deal. Now I was faced with trying to match both upper and lower cabinets and find a matching panel that matched both. They were scheduled to level floor Feb 25/26 2013. On Feb 22, 2013 his secretary called and said I needed to pay an additional $4,000 before they would sister the beams. I told her Brett needed to talk to me because I had already paid $14,000 and only had a new roof – which was not done correctly. When he called, we argued about the payment schedule – he did not give me one until the end of January. His payment schedule was not the one I was expecting. I had paid him almost 50% yet he only purchased roofing material. I asked for the roof receipts for the 25 year warrantee I was supposed to get. Brett got very angry and hostile. We decided to part ways and Brett was going to send me a revised invoice for the work already completed. I had a date of Mar 1, 2013 for installation of new ductwork/furnace with my plumber. The beams had to be sistered before ductwork could be completed. On the phone Brett told me if he didn’t sister the beams he would owe me money. This is what Brett sent me: Demo Work: $4000.00; original price was $3500.00 Additional Demo Work: $750.00; original price was $460.00 Sister Joists: $4250.00 “ $3700.00 Roof: $8600.00 “ $7905.00 Copper Flash: $250.00 not on original roof contract, I didn’t know it was a separate charge Side door install: $300.00 not on original contract- I agree with charge Insurance contract: $187 not on original contract Credit: -200.00 Total: 19,050.00 My Total without sister joists is $12,415.00 Brett changed pricing after he completed the work. I called and asked for my keys, he refused to bring them to my house and instead said he would mail them. He never did which required me rekeying the locks – an additional cost of $23.00. I have no paperwork on the roof, no way to verify shingles for warrantee. I have no idea where he purchased the roofing material. I felt safe hiring Brett because I found him on Angie’s list and there was nothing filed against him with the BBB. I am asking Angie’s list to try and work the problem but I don’t expect much. Brett said he didn’t care what I put on Angie’s list and he wasn’t afraid of a bad review. I will be filing a report with the BBB. If you have already hired him or you decide to hire despite this review – be onsite at all times to watch what they do. Ps: When they did the demo, they left all the sheetrock screws/nails in the wood. When the mold removal contractor arrived onsite to do the work he had to bring in one of his workers from another crew to help remove all the screws and nails. This despite the fact Brett was at my house when the estimate was done and agreed to make sure all nails/screws were removed from 2x4’s. UPDATE: As of today's date, April 15, 2013; Brett has made no effort to contact me about our disagreement on his company's work. In addition, a total of 26 roofing shingles blew off the "new" roof less than 3 weeks after the roof was installed! I have asked for a refund on the roof because he refused to provide receipts or a warrantee for the roof, nor has he offered to fix the roof.
