In June of 2009, Ellis Exteriors gave the lowest estimate to put a new roof on two main sections of my home. I realize this is a while ago, but the problems with the work they did continue. They started close to promised time. They were untidy, with nails and cigarette butts around. They finished within the range they said, They used a cheaper shingle than on the estimate and didn't put an edge on roofs as agreed. Ellis was not responsive when I mentioned this. The price was low, so i let it go. Then the nightmare began. Within one month, black mold started appearing INSIDE...on the wall of my bedroom no less. It was 'blooming' in a number of places. I called and workers returned, saying it must be leaking around the chimney and they would fix it. The mold continued to grow, despite clorox cleanings. Parts of the ceiling in the bedroom started to discolor and get soft. Ellis returned in July, August and September, each time saying they fixed it. A dark spot began to form in the livingroom ceiling, beneath the affected bedroom. By October, they assured me it was all fixed. But now it was clear that the bedroom had to be torn apart to get the mold out and the ceiling repaired. They said it was not their problem, and that's why I had insurance. This conversation continued for a week or two, til i finally just caved and called my insurance agent and had them cover the renovations. The agent said he hoped I learned not to go with the lowest estimate without some serious recommendations to support the company's competence. The insurance paid nearly $2.400, and raised my rates. Time has passed, and now mold is growing again in the same locations. I recently had another construction firm come and re-seal the area around the chimney, which is still not right. This was an additional expense of $150. I'm hoping I caught it early enough so that the clorox and a little touch up paint will do...the idea of tearing out walls again is horrifying.
