In short, the contractor was very slow working on the job, did mediocre work, and then abandoned the job unfinished right after I made a payment to him. The job started OK - Steve gave me an estimate of $2000 for labor and materials in September. He pointed me to a local brick/bluestone supplier, and I verified the brick and bluestone products to be used. I paid the first third of the money and he began demolition, with him or his son working a couple hours a day. Eventually the demo got done, although carelessness in the demo process resulted in some unnecessary cracks running through the cheekwall portions that remained. Then he started building the brick risers for the new steps. He wasn't really confident with his math, and I kind of had to walk him through what rises and runs of the steps needed to be. He even put the first set of risers in 2" too high and had to rip them out. Eventually the risers got finished. Dimensions were not as precise as I would have liked; rises and runs were accurate to about a +/- half an inch tolerance, which is not acceptable per the building code, but could have perhaps been evened out in the treads. Now it was late October. I had a two week trip in early November and wanted the job done before then. I was told that would happen. It didn't happen. Shortly before I left, I paid the second third of the money, ostensibly so he could get the bluestone. He said the job would be finished by the time I was back. He never showed up after that. After I got back, I left a few messages which weren't returned. I finally left a polite message stating that I was going to sue him if he didn't finish the job. He called me back and said he broke his collarbone. Now it's more than 8 months since the "broken collarbone" and I've called a few times since then and he's never answered or called back. Now I just need to take him to small claims court.
Description of Work: Remove existing brick steps and rebuild steps with bluestone treads. Also, remove concrete tops of cheek walls and repair brick at cheek walls.

Son's Masonry called me back the same day. They began the work the following Monday and it was completed in 5 days. They were neat and didn't leave any type of a mess. I felt the price was reasonable.
Description of Work: I had water leaking into my basement around the front steps. Son's Masonry dug up around the steps and waterproofed the area. They filled a crack in the sidewalk. They closed up the opening under the steps in the basement with cement block.

There is too much to mention on this father and son team. I will try to make this short. Father and son would arrive at my house when they got ready and didn't bother to call when they weren't coming. Also, it started out to be a father and son team, but ended with only the father. The retaining wall that the father installed looked horrible. I had another company come in and remove it and reinstall a new wall. The new company said that not enough stone was used with the first wall and would have fallen in probably a year. My front sidewalk (going to my front door) that father busted up was left busted up for almost 3 weeks. It was a hazard. I was waiting almost a month for a stamped concrete sidewalk. On a Tuesday, I finally called the son to ask him to just come and put down a plain sidewalk and he said he couldn't possibly get a truck of concrete until Thursday and that he would have his father call me on Wednesday. He also said that the reason why it is taking so long is that he was waiting on the concrete color and that the company only orders color when they have 100 orders or more, which I find hard to believe. On Friday, no one came or called so I called the son up again and told him our business is concluded. I paid for the wall and half of what they were going to do to my sidewalk and we were all square. I didn't owe them anything and they didn't owe me anything. This team is very unprofessional and if you want anything done correctly and in a timely manner, I suggest you do NOT use them!
Description of Work: Retaining wall installed. Sidewalk removed.

I had the wall of a building that needed repair. It was a big job and I should have known to go with a big company. These guys bid low, and promised to repair all the sections that needed fixing. We went over the whole project together before starting and I was assured that Steve and his son would be able to fix all the issues. It took at least a month to get all the scaffolding up, and then they worked on it for like 3 months, and when they said it was done, only the top 6 feet of the wall was fixed, not the whole thing like promised. While these guys were the lowest cost - YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. When I pushed them on finishing the job all they said was "that's the best I can do." They should have declined to take the job in the first place. They also charged $1500 to paint one room. They said they would renovate the entire apartment and they did not. I think they had other jobs going on at the same time - that is not what I pay for. I want my job done, per the terms of our agreement and then they can move onto the next project. Do yourself a favor and avoid these guys for big jobs. For small jobs they are probably ok. I was shocked that they were so dishonest given the 3 other good reviews posted by Angies list. By the way, 2-3 months after them "finishing" the scaffolding still hasnt been taken down and they dont even return my calls anymore, even though I paid them well over $10,000. Awful. Talk about non-Christian.

Called Steve for an estimate to repair. He returned my call within hours and came THAT EVENING to give an estimate. His price for the work was absolutely reasonable, so combining that with his great reviews on Angie's List, I didn't bother to get any further estimates. He originally said he would be out to do the work the following week but he was able to come out to the house on Saturday, 2 days later, to make the repair. The repair looks beautiful, very neat. Steve cleaned up everything when he was finished. I would definitely call him for any masonry work that needed doing in the future.
Description of Work: There was a nasty looking gap between a concrete slab front entrance and the foundation of my house.

Great job; kudos to Son's Masonry!
Description of Work: This father-son team created a new front walkway that connected with driveways on both sides of our house. They used interlocking brick pavers that we provided and did an outstanding job. They responded to our initial call within a day, set up an appointment to provide estimate and actually showed to start the work the day after we accepted their quote! The job was finished within the time we agreed upon and we could not be happier with the end result. Steve and Kyle were professional, skilled and a pleasure to work with. They removed all demo material and left a clean job site. They also provided us with a quote to replace our retaining wall and we will definitely call them when we are ready for this next project.

Excellent, no complaints what so ever, did job on time and for they said it would cost.
Description of Work: Steve amd his son Kyle, came to my house and looked at the job, gave me a realistic estimate and then gave me a start date. They showed up on time and did exactly what they said they were going to do. They were very clean and respectful and did a lot of extra work. Their masonary work was definetley above average, you could see their experience as everything was level and they got my basement to be dry. I higly recommend them and will refer them to my freinds and family in the future. Thanks Dan Shepard
