Here is the last email I received from Comfort Windows:Dear Mr. Desautels, First I would like to Thanks You for allowing me to stop down yesterday to take a look at the door. Sometimes when a company representative works with a family in going over products for the home he doesn’t always show the true benefits of the product and how the price comes about. I feel that this is the case with your door purchase and our consultant Peter.I would like to go over some facts I feel are missing and why you feel that the door you ordered was not worth the money you paid. Comfort uses several manufactures when products are requested that are outside our direct line. With our fiberglass doors, the slab is produced by PlastPro, who is a national fiberglass door manufacture, the custom glass is produced by a company called ODL, and the final assembly is completed by a company called Millken. The door sill is produced by a company called Endura, so you can see Comfort takes the best of the industry to produce one door that we are proud of. These are all highly rated manufactures which bring the highest quality products and labor to the Comfort line. With Comforts own company installers, not using subcontractors or pick up truck guys, you are getting the best and responsible installation. We will stand behind this and every install we do. When looking at your door, did you know, included in your price is not only the cost of the slab, but the final measure which is an extra at the big box stores. So even before your door is ordered, a Comfort representative has been to your house twice to be sure everything will be right. The hardware is grade one security, with an internal strike plate that you can’t even see which is an extra at other retailers. The hinges are ball bearing, not a simple pin set as with most others. The door is drilled for the dead bolt at no extra cost. Your choice of door hardware is included, not an extra. All homes built before 1978 are tested for lead, which no pick up truck guy can or will do, and this is the law. When installing, not only is the old door removed but we dispose of it as per state and federal regulations. The jamb itself is upgraded over what the general market offers. The exterior jamb was wrapped; again it is not an extra with Comfort as it is with the big box stores. The jamb width was 6 9/16” is not standard, and this would be an additional charge with the box guys, but Comfort included it within the price. You asked for a custom paint color which was included, without any extra charge. Comfort doors are not mass produced where they would be warehouse until someone purchases them. They are custom manufactured for you. And you know we are more than happy to offer service call to handle any issues that might arise. When pricing our products Comfort always tries to offer the best quality and the lowest prices possible. We do have overhead, and we are a business that needs to produce an income that will keep us here today and in the future. If you are still interested in replacing the slab, please contact me and we can make arrangements to do so.Sincerely, Tim Mccaffrey518 783 3171
Description of Work: In April of this year I hired Comfort Windows to install three windows and a rear entry door. I previously used Comfort Windows for windows in the past and was very happy with the quality and the service. Based on this trust I hired them for this task to install three windows and a door. I am very happy with the windows. The entry door they sold me had several installation issues, that the Company did send techs over to fix. I have questioned the quality of the door. The door is a Plastpro door that looks exactly like there Delta model, that sell for around $300.00. The Company originally ( Tim McCaffery) told me that the door wasn't a plastpro door. The company name "Plastpro" is edged into the door.

Response from Comfort Windows
I received your statement of complaint from your member. The door was installed on April 16, 2012, 6 months ago. We have answered every call he has made and it was determined by our production dept Mgr on his last visit August 17, 2012, there was nothing wrong with the door or its performance. My letter to the member, clearly states my answer to any question of the quality of the door or installation provided by Comfort. I am still willing to replace the slab or, If he, would like to find what he feels is better door I would be happy to look at it and discuss possible replacement.

A representative of Comfort Windows came to our house to give an estimate on sidimg our house. He was the first to come discuss siding. He was very thorough in his presentation and very patiently explained all that was involved. We learned a lot about the entire siding process, and were very impressed with his professionalism. After much discussion among the family, we decided that it would be in best keeping with the style of the house to go with painting.

Update: The following statement from the reply is almost a complete falsehood: "Mr. Tocco listened to the members, presented a price on the installation as the member requested the job be done, wrote an agreement , and left it with the member. The member had it in his possession for two weeks to read, ask questions, or contact an outside party to verify any part of the agreement. Only when the member called, did Mr. Tocco return to their residence and pick up the signed contract." As noted in my report, the salesman showed up at my house with the contract on the morning that I was leaving on a 10 day vacation. I did not have any contract for 14 days. The following statement from the reply reflects Comfort's initial proposal (for which they wanted an additional $1,400): "The cedar was and is available at local lumber yards and we even provided the members with quotes from the local lumber dealer and included our professional discount." The facts are that, for $1,400, they offered to pick up the cedar and charge me (in addition to the additional $1,400) the cost thereof, indicating that said cost would reflect their discount. When I rejected that offer (due mainly to the demand for the additional $1,400), their next offer was that I would have to pick up the cedar on my own. They indicate that the cedar is readily available, but in fact, as indicated in my complaint, when I investigated the availability of the cedar list that Comfort gave me at the lumber yard that Comfort suggested, I was told that (A) the type of cedar specified was not readily available in the quantities specified, and (B) if available, would cost approximately $2,000. Note that I was expecting a cedar cost of $300 to $600 (based upon the estimate from the big box retailer), and that the extra cost for cedar is caused by the fact that the windows were too small. As noted in my report, the problem was caused by one or both of the following: (1) the failure of the salesman to communicate with the measuring person; and (2) the failure of the measuring person to contact me (my cell number was on the face of the contract). Note that the reason that the windows were too small was caused by the following: (1) even though I asked the salesman to measure the windows before the contract was signed, the salesman indicated that he could not measure the windows, but rather his "installation man would have to do it; (2) even though I then spent at least 45 minutes leading the salesman through the installation, and specifying (as I did in every meeting) that the installation could be summarized as (a) remove existing cedar, (b) insert window; (c) reinstall previously-removed cedar to frame windows, ripping same down as needed, the windows were improperly measured by Comfort AFTER the contract was signed to fit on top of the existing cedar, necessitating the purchase of a significant amount of additional cedar to properly frame the windows. As indicated above, I was expecting a cedar cost of $300 to $600 (based upon the estimate from the big box retailer), due to the fact that some of the existing cedar would probably be damaged in the removal process. Based upon the foregoing, it is clear that the following statement in the reply is also not correct: "The member had over 14 days to approve the agreement. The member was asked and he said he had no questions on the job." I did not have an agreement in my hands for 14 days, and I had numerous questions (which is why I spent at least 45 minutes leading the salesman through the installation before I signed the contract, which was the first time that i had seen the contract). To the best of my knowledge, the following statement is also incorrect: "We did try to contact the member several times by phone and ... our calls were not returned..." The phone number on the contract is a cell phone that is always on, is always on my person, and has voice mail. There were no unanswered calls, unless Comfort called when i was asleep or in the shower and did not leave a voice message. The real problem here is that Comfort make a mistake in measuring the windows. As indicated in my report, since I rejected their second proposal in March, 2010, they have made only two efforts to contact me: (1) a letter around September, 2011, indicating that Comfort's notes indicated that I had accepted their second proposal made in March, 2011, and (2) the phone call that I received in December, 2011, during which I spent quite a bit of time explaining all the history summarized in my report. As you noted in your previous e-mail to me, you also did not find comfort to be terribly responsive. There are three possible outcomes that I see here: (1) obtain windows that are properly sized: (2) return my deposit; (3) come up with a compromise. The first Comfort proposal was that Comfort would obtain the cedar to do the installation reasonably close to my original expectation, and I would pay for the cedar and pay Comfort an additional $1,400 - this first proposal was rejected, mainly because Comfort wanted the additional $1,400. The second Comfort proposal was that I was to obtain the cedar and Comfort would do the installation for the original price - this proposal was rejected, because I did not feel comfortable obtaining the cedar on my own, and my subsequent investigation proved my concerns to be well founded. As you may be able to discern from the foregoing discussion, a reputable contractor and I could quickly come to a compromise on this matter. However, I do not believe that Comfort has acted in a reputable manner in addressing this. This matter has dragged out now for fifteen months. Based upon all of Comfort's advertizing (see the following statement in their reply: "When a client has an issue we take it very personal, and we strive to make every decision in their best behalf."), I initially trusted Comfort more than the big box retailer. It is fair to say that Comfort has not met their own professed standard in my case.
Description of Work: I have an enclosed porch with 13 window openings, framed with rough-sawn cedar and screened. I wished to have the screens and cedar framing around the window openings removed, windows with nailing flanges inserted in the openings, and then have the cedar that was removed ripped down and reinstalled around the openings to frame the installed windows. The goal was that the result should appear as if the windows were installed when my house was built in 1987. A secondary goal was that I would like the work done by the end of calendar year 2010 (to qualify for a $1,500 federal energy credit). For the reasons set forth below, the work has never never been done. My wife and I visited Comfort (and others) in September and October, 2010. In each instance, I indicated that I had an enclosed porch with 13 window openings, framed with rough-sawn cedar and screened; that I wished to have the screens and cedar framing around the window openings removed, windows with nailing flanges inserted in the openings, and then have the cedar that was removed ripped down and reinstalled around the openings to frame the installed windows; that the result should appear as if the windows were installed when my house was built in 1987; and that I would like the work done by the end of calendar year 2010 (to qualify for a $1,500 federal energy credit). Suppliers (such as one big box storet) that only offered replacement windows were eliminated from the mix. When my wife and I visited the Comfort Windows showroom on several occasions, the Comfort salesman (Dom Tocco) told us that Comfort would do the job properly, and would be more reliable than a chain store, since their own employees would be responsible for the entire job (measuring, manufacturing, installation). For $35, a large big box store sent a woman to my house who, in a single sitting, did a complete measure and gave me that store's final cost, which was about 70% the cost that Comfort agreed to. (Based upon this, I have given Comfort a "B" on price). Unfortunately for me (as you will see below), my wife believed that Comfort would do a better job. On November 19, 2010, just as my wife and I were leaving for a 10-day vacation, the Comfort salesman (Mr. Tocco) showed up at my home with a contract totaling $9,213, with a $3,000 down-payment so that Comfort could do a final measure. At that time, because the "contract" was devoid of any real detail about the job, and so that there would be no misunderstanding, I talked the salesman through the entire job once again (spending at least 45 minutes doing so), walking him through the porch while doing so, and even offering to remove the cedar around a window frame so he could get a good measurement. He indicated that someone else (not him) does the measuring and that he would make sure that the job was done as instructed. Accordingly (and in hindsight, foolishly), I signed his bare bones contract and gave him the downpayment, trusting that the work would be properly measured and accomplished (my cell number was on the contract if there were any questions). Comfort then showed up at my house during the last week of December, 2010 with windows that were too small (clearly measured to be replacement windows), obviously intending to cover them with standard replacement window aluminum trim. Why this happened is a mystery - did the salesman and the "final measure" person ever speak? When I indicated to the installation crew that the windows were clearly too small and not what I had ordered, the crew replaced the cedar that they had removed from my house (some of which was damaged) and left. In early January, 2011, a number of Comfort representatives met me at my house to talk over the problem. After a while, they indicated that they would "make this right", and asked whether further incentives would induce me to accept the undersized windows. I indicated that since I was already out the $1,500 tax credit, I was only interersted in getting what I had told the salesman that I wanted. They indicated that some of the cedar on my house was very dry and thus would be damaged in the removal process and would need to be replaced. I indicated that the woman from the big box store had told me the same thing (she told me to expect an extra cost of between $300 to $600 for this additional cedar). I then heard nothing from Comfort until I received a call on my cell in March, 2011, asking for a meeting at my house. I agreed, and a rather unpleasant Comfort representative came to my house, indicated that the "factory" would not take back the windows, that in his mind this mix-up was my fault and that I should sign a contract addendum agreeing to accept the undersized windows, plus pay for the additional cedar needed to frame in the undersized windows (550 linear feet costing approx. $2,000), plus pay Comfort an additional $1,440 for the extra work needed to install the undersized windows. When I refused his "offer", he left. Several weeks later, I again received a call on my cell, and the same representative reappeared at my house with the proposition previously offered, with the modifications that Comfort would waive the additional charge but that I needed to go out and independently obtain the cedar (in a specific size that is not sold). When I indicated that I did not accept that proposal either, the representative left. I did not hear from Comfort again until (A) September, 2011, when I received a letter from Comfort indicating that they were doing an "audit on uncompleted contracts", indicating that the representative ("our former production manager") who had visited me twice in March had left "notes" in the file indicating that I had accepted his proposals and asking to come to my home to measure the cedar that I was to then independently obtain, and (B) December, 2011, when I received a call on my cell from a woman asking what the status of the uncompleted contract was - I related all of the foregoing to her on that call. I have not heard from Comfort since. Based upon the foregoing, and given what I believe to be a complete lack of follow-through on their part, I have given Comfort a rating of "F" on overall experience, responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism.

Response from Comfort Windows
Comfort is a family owned manufacture with over 34 years in serving our local community. When a client has an issue we take it very personal, and we strive to make every decision in their best behalf. The member did visit our showroom and an appointment was made to have one of our factory trained representatives visit their home and answer any question they have on their project. Mr. Dom Tocco with over 25 years in the home building and improvement industry was assigned to visit with the members. Mr. Tocco listened to the members, presented a price on the installation as the member requested the job be done, wrote an agreement , and left it with the member. The member had it in his possession for two weeks to read, ask questions, or contact an outside party to verify any part of the agreement. Only when the member called, did Mr. Tocco return to their residence and pick up the signed contract. The law requires 3 business days; The member had over 14 days to approve the agreement. The member was asked and he said he had no questions on the job. The member is an educated man. There is nothing hidden, all agreements explain the scope of every job. The member had a clear understanding of the project. The job was started as per the agreement, and when the member questioned the installation, work was stopped, so all issues could be resolved. The member states that the windows were measured to be replacement windows, Comfort is a window manufacture and we make our windows to the specification on the agreement. When trying to work with the member we, meet with him several times to come to agreement. We tried several options, one where we did drawings showing exactly how the windows would be installed, using his existing cedar and adding new cedar to complete the wrap. This would eliminate the use of the aluminum as quoted on the agreement he signed. The member could supply the material and we would install it at no charge. The cedar was and is available at local lumber yards and we even provided the members with quotes from the local lumber dealer and included our professional discount. When the member was not happy with that, we offered to even install the cedar at no charge. As per his concern about the addendum, Comfort always keeps a record of changes from the original agreement. WE ask all clients and company representatives to sign an addendum, outlining all changes and if needed any additional money due or credited to be given. We did try to contact the member several times by phone and when our calls were not returned we sent a letter. We did have a change in production mgrs. And again we sent the member a letter. The member had never called, stopped by, or even wrote a letter asking for a sit down or any type of communication. We are still willing to complete this job under our last offer. As the windows were specially designed and manufactured for him and are not able to fit any other opening, we are not in a position to offer a refund on the deposit. Over the past 10-15 years have had multiple windows replaced in our older home. From estimate to installation all employees were pleasant and professional. Windows all have exceeded expectations for being well insulated and primarily problem fee. The one exception...and why I very highly recommend this company...is a recurrent problem we've had with one opening device on one of the several windows we've had installed. Whenever I call about this problem they've respond quickly and they've honored the lifetime warranty without any mention of cost. It is so refreshing to deal with a company that gives you an honest estimate, are pleasant to deal with, respond timely to problems and stands by their work. They are a bit expensive...you get what you pay for.

The representative who gave us the estimate was courteous, knowledgeable and arrived on time. He was more than helpful as we tried to match what would be used on the garage to the existing house siding. Once we set a date for the work to begin, it began on time and was done neatly and professionally. The price was fair, the workmanship outstanding, and we were treated with the utmost courtesy. They were wonderful and I would recommend them to anybody. They came when they said they were going to come. They cleaned up. They did extra that they didn't have to do by putting molding around. I was very happy. I'm really hard to please and I was very happy with their work. They actually came early. They sent two crews and they finished it all in one day. They even came with a vacuum and they vacuumed.
Description of Work: Comfort Windows installed 12 vinyl windows.

I had several problems with them. I bought a window from them and they couldn?t deliver it stating that the factory didn?t make windows big enough. It didn?t make any sense to me. They installed three storm windows in front of the house and were going to replace it with one big window. The windows that they installed were old and not all that good anyway, which is why I wanted it replaced. The three separate windows were slightly highly priced, and I had a problem with that too. The salesman was someone who had claimed to be knowledgeable and had an experience of 30 years. My problem was that I had paid the money and a month later they sent someone out to measure and I was told that my windows were too big and that the factory didn?t make them that big. Then they did the work with three separate windows. Had I known this earlier I would?ve gotten a different estimate. I felt they were playing a game with me, and it didn?t feel good.
Description of Work: I used Comfort Windows to install three storm windows.

THEY WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL, THEY CAME AT THE APPOINTED TIME. THEY CLEANED UP AFTER THEMSELVES AND THEY WERE IN AND OUT IN ONE DAY. I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THEM. I'D NEVER KNOW THEY WERE IN MY HOME EXCEPT FOR THE NEW WINDOWS.
Description of Work: I HAD THREE EXTREMELY LARGE WINDOWS AND ONE SMALLER ONE REPLACED.
