The quality of work was satisfactory and once they started the work the work was completed on time. The people doing the actual work were cooperative and were very fast. The carpenters and the countertop guy looked knowldegable. Having said that I would not recommend this company to anyone. This might be your "Plan C company" a contigency. The so called "project managers" (PM) have little experience with understanding customer expectations and are not transparent with their communication. For instance, the door the company ordered from its manufacturer was of the wrong size. So the PM called us a day before installtion date and said it was going to be two more weeks as the door had to be reordered. This meant we had to reschedule our plans. That two weeks became three extra weeks and when the so-called project manager called us, he wanted us to drop everything we were doing and schedule a date in next two days very early in the morning. With a baby in the house we requested couple more days so we can plan properly. We got a stern email saying customer "denied installation request" and so the next date is availble only after three weeks. So they screw up the order and somehow we are being held responsible for the delay. Being furstated by such answers we called the supervior of the PM and were shocked to learn that our PM was actually planning to go on vacation next day to Spain for two weeks. His trip was probably not planned in a day but we were never informed of this and now were were being rushed so we can accomodate PM's vacation. We have no probelm with the vacation but if we had been informed we could have understood the need. The supervisor didn't understand this and was adament that we need to scheule in next two days. So now we had a backup PM since the original PM went on vacation!!!. Once the job was done we thought we were done dealing with this company as we had paid the balance amount on the final inovice we received. But then we realized the company never applied the $100 coupon from Angie's List. Bennett had offered the coupon on the Angie's Site and Bennet had agreed to apply the coupon. So after waiting for more than a month after the full paymnet was made I made a call to see what was going on. The PM had conviniently forgotten about it . He send me an email saying he was going to apply the coupon but now there was going to be an extra $65 charge for something his carpenter had to do that we had requested. That was just unacceptable. We were never informed about such a charge when the carpenter complied to our request, the final invoce which was sent a month later didn't mention it and now when we find that Bennet was not applying the coupon they suddenly disocver a $65 bogus charge. Looks like stealing to me. It not only gives Bennett bad reputation but also gives Angie's List bad reputation because their coupon is now being used to steal money from the customers. Just calling yourself a PM doesn't make you a PM. May be not all of Bennett's PM behave such a way but then their supervisors should have known better. We cannot keep calling PM's supervisor every time we have a complaint. We were told the contract we signed says we have to bear any extara costs when any additonal request were made and so the $65 was correct. But the contract never talks about informing the customer first about the charges whe we request something additional. They use such well crafted techniques to nickel and dime their customers.
Description of Work: We hired Bennett contracting for front door and countertop installation. This included removal of the old item and replacing it with new item

Response from Bennett Contracting Inc
I don’t respond to all of these, but this case there is quite a bit of misunderstanding. The door was received both manufactured wrong and damaged, of course we canceled the install and reordered the door. The effort to reschedule, ASAP was our attempt to provide great service and make up for the problem with door. We encourage our employees to take vacation time, and they schedule it weeks ahead of time. We are happy to honor our discount coupon with any Angie’s customer, just print it out and give it to your estimator when you sign the contract, or mail it in with your payment. Very pleasant professional experience from beginning to end. Couldn't be happier with the result. Attention to detail removed concrete stair footers along with the rest of the job, and had all completed in about 3 1/2 consecutive days. My concern was that it was going to be messy and noisy, but I found no mess, and the noise was minimal and very tolerable. I also obtained a quote from them to have a PVC deck installed, and found both the decking quote and the actual price for the performed work to be higher than that of another contractor for the same job, however that being said their work was excellent and I feel they can be trusted to do quality work.
Description of Work: Bennett Construction ripped out and removed a set of pressure treated stairs with landing that was unstable and leaning away from the side of my raised ranch. Also replaced the side door to the stairs with a beautiful window, replaced outside vinyl house siding re: conversion from door to window, inside window trim, drywall, and baseboard molding. Replaced a strip of dented vinyl garage molding and an outside electrical outlet cover as well.

I am very pleased with Bennett and have used them several times. They are a little bit more expensive, but given how contractors are sometimes not as dependable I am willing to pay the little bit extra that it would cost for their service. Their quality of work is very good. I will continue to use this company in the future.

We were looking to have an estimate to put in a double front door and stained glass window in the entrance way of our home. Which would be replacements of existing items. Which Bennett's rep, George Griffin made me feel that none of these items were a big deal. Sourcing the door might be a bit of work, but they had companies that they work with so no problems. Was told I'd here from him in 2-3 days, as he was going to come in and get exact measurements for the window. I am sourcing the window completely and it is a pre-made vinyl unit with the stained glass between insulated panes, just like you get for any home replacement window. But to order it, I needed the size info that George was going to provide. Well 45 days later and nothing.... this has held up the entire project and the wife ain't happy. Even a freaking call back to decline the job would have been nice rather than making me chase them, and they are still telling me I'll hear from George shortly.... yeah right! Stop wasting my time and just tell me you don't want the job. I will not use these guys again for anything, not even a competitive pricing quote, but at least I'm not stuck with a job half done or out any down payments, so in that I'm lucky.
Description of Work: I used Angie's list to find these guys.... all A's and stars. With the exception of the initial contact and estimate visit, I'd have to give these guys an F.... the only reason I have not is that for the initial portion they were very good.... then they simply did not follow up with product options and pricing as they said they would. Calls to check were met with "Yeah he's out on vacation, but I'm sure he'll call when he gets back." and that was followed by nothing at all.... no attempts were made to get back to us over the last 45 days. We apologize for the inconvenience. It would have been better if George had let you know immediately that he was not able to come back and measure your window, so you could order it from another supplier. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our service going forward. Greg Jackson, President, Bennett Contracting, Inc.

I contacted the company and their advance man made an appointment. We went over my ideas and he offered suggestions. I contacted a list of vendors he suggested to look at products. I also had a list of my own as I knew pretty much what I wanted to achieve. An estimate was sent to me along with a contract with complete description of the job. Base porices had been established for items, and when I exceeded them, new estimates of costs were sent to me. We went off to Florida and the company had keys to our house. I also had security on the house and could set alarms remote if they forgot to lock up [which was never a problem]. I was given a date that the work would begin, and they kept in touch with me every step of the way. I also had a friend look in on the job and take pictures so I could comment if something looked not to specifications. [never a problem]. The company had put protection over all my floors and did a complete clean up job so that you would not know they were even here----except we got a beautiful new bathroom and laundry room when we got back from Florida!
Description of Work: My bathroom was completely gutted and redone. Work included radiant floor, spa type shower, tiling, painting, new toilet and vanity, ceiling heater/fan, etc. I also had a laundry room added to a first floor room. I was AWAY when this work was done and left complete instructions. They were followed meticulously and my house was in excellent order when I returned. This company is top of the line professional. I was given a lot of helpful advice by their "advance" man, who was able to understand my goals and he helped me achieve them. We were totally satisfied.

The estimator seemed understanding of my work schedule and responsive to my questions, but communications issues proved problematic beginning with the fact that he listed my home number as my work number so instead of calling me back at work, he would call my house and leave messages thinking that was my work number. He said the crew could come install the entry doors first and return to install the new interior wood trim with the storms when they came in. The crew that actually did the work were excellent craftsmen who did outstanding work, but what glitches occurred were due to faulty communication. They installed the entry doors, which they had stained at their site, the first week of November, but when they returned to install the storm doors, the trim had not been stained as the estimator told me it would. He had explained that it wouldn't match in color because of the difference between fiberglass and wood but they would try to get it as close as possible, leading me to believe they would be done at the same time. The crew had not been told about the retractable screens in the storms doors and it took longer than they expected to assemble this unfamiliar style storm door. When the trim was stained, the crew did an amazing job matching the stains on the wood to the doors and also to other woodwork in the house. They also perfectly matched the shape of the doorways. The edge of the back entry door for some unexplained reason had been left white (bare fiberglass) and in finishing up the crew stained it last at about 2:30/3 p.m. and it came out blotchy and uneven and by 11:30 still hadn't dried! Then when they went to give me the keys to the storms, we discovered they didn't match. The estimator and I had already had a few miscommunications about these keys, but the crew said they would explain the problem when they returned to their office. The owner called and resolved the key issue to my satisfaction and when I explained about the blotchy stain job that didn't dry, he sent an expert to fix both problems. This expert fixed the blotches and put up blue tape in case it didn't dry so I could still shut the door. He also made me aware that the wood between the entry and storm doors was only primed, and that I might want to paint it in the Spring. Since the estimator had indicated that the exterior trim would be primed and painted with 2 coats of exterior paint, I was surprised that it hadn't been done. Once again, a miscommunication about what comprised exterior trim, which I assumed was anything exterior to the entry door, but the estimator did come and paint it. The estimator also had a problem providing the receipt I needed for my energy rebate although I had told him verbally on two different occasions as well as in writing that I needed a breakdown of the cost of materials only. His response was an unofficial e-mail from his personal hotmail account to my hotmail account. I had to call the office and explain it to someone there who sent me the breakdown for the cost of the materials on their stationery. Based on the quality of the work, I would use them again myself and have recommended them to others. I would recommend them to anyone who wants quality workmanship with the caveat that if you have any issues with the person in charge of your project, speak to the owner. He is willing to work with you to complete the job the way you wanted it. They also have 5 different estimators so when I use them again I can request a different person to be in charge of my project. The problems that forced me to give them a less than perfect rating were all due to communication problems with the estimator in charge of my project. I hope that the next time I use them with a different person in charge, I will be able to give them an "A" rating.
Description of Work: Replaced front and back doors with fiberglass entry door systems and replaced both storm doors to take advantage of Federal Energy Tax Credit. Also replaced replaced inside woodwork around both doors. 2011 Update: When I lowered the glass in the storm doors this Spring, I discovered the screens were not attached on the sides and blew inward allowing mosquitoes inside. I called Bennett and they had the Andersen Rep call me that week. it took an additional 3 weeks for the Andersen Rep to order the new screens and then come replace the ones in the door. I was pleased to finally benefit from the screens, but then I realized I could no longer lock the front storm door from the outside with the key, only by turning the latch from the inside! When I called the Andersen Rep, he insisted he didn't do anything and that perhaps it was the lock mechanism and he suggested I call the Anderson service number to request a new mechanism or to call my contractor. i called Bennett and they had someone out within a few hours of my call and it took him over an hour to fix the alignment that the Andersen Rep must have screwed up when he put the door back up. Bennett responded quickly to both of my calls and at no charge even though the locking problem was caused by the Anderson rep. They really do stand by their work all the way! I have upgraded my ratings for their responsiveness and my overall experience from a "B" initially to an "A." It is nice to have a company that takes care of unforeseen issues that arise long after the job is done!

I received a couple of quotes on this job. They were all around the same price. I picked Bennett Contracting because I like hearing that once I was a customer of theirs they are very responsive to any jobs you have in the future. Rick, the plumber for Bennett came on a Friday. The sump pump pit we have had to be dug out a little more and that was done nicely. He replaced a pedestal pump with a submerged pump and added a back up pump that runs on our village water in times of power loss. Previously, the sump pump was piped into the village sewer, illegal where we live, he cut a hole in the house and there is now a PVC pipe draining the water onto the lawn. The job took an entire day from 8am-4pm but gives us such piece of mind that if we go away and the power goes out the sump won't fail. Rick was very nice and the staff at Bennett contracting were all helpful when I called. I only gave them a B for responsiveness due to having to change the install date a few times because of larger jobs. In retrospect, not a huge problem but since it's spring and our clay soil doesn't absorb well I was getting antsy to have it done.
Description of Work: Sump pump replaced. Back up sump pump installed. Sump pump brought up to code.

They found some rot in the walls of the sunroom. They took out all the rot and put in new support. On the outside they put in a layer of new sub-siding and then they put on the aluminum siding. From the beginning the estimate came in quickly and was quite detailed. They even through in extras for free-remove a wall, change a window opening. The finishing work is being done now and it is better than the original builder. I would NEVER use anyone else. The work crew has become like family to us. We love them.
Description of Work: We had 3 estimates from different contractors to rebuild our home after a fire. Bennett came in with the most detailed bid, worked with us to avoid using an independent insurance adjuster (big expense) and have surpassed our expectations on the quality of the work. We had the entire house gutted and rebuilt including a complete reconstruction of the second floor.

We chose them because they had high ratings on Angies List. Initially, they responded very quickly - they sent out someone to look at the damage, and a few days later, they sent someone to remove the debris and secure the back fascia board. After that, we hardly heard anything from them (Steve was the guy working on our account). They took a full week to get us a quote on the work, and that quote was more than double any other quote we received. It was very thorough, but we couldn't help but think they were trying to take advantage of the situation and milk our insurance for whatever they could get. We had 2 other private quotes plus the insurance assessor's quote. All were at least half of what Bennett quoted for essentially the same services. Bennett was supposed to follow up and communicate with our insurance company. They did do that to a certain degree, but they led us to believe they would take care of all of the negotiations with them. Part of the problem was our insurance company, but Bennett only contributed to the problem. The follow through was horrible, with very few follow-up calls. There was no action on the repairs for over 3 weeks. As a result, we now have squirrels and bats in our attic. We finally became fed up and found another contractor to do the work for us. We left a message for Bennett telling them that we had decided to do this. They never returned that call. Needless to say the customer service and follow through were horrible.
Description of Work: We hired them to do some repair work on our gutters, fascia board, and soffit that had fallen off our house during the ice storms. They did not perform all of the tasks we originally agreed upon - just debris removal and securing the fascia board in the back of our house to prevent it from also falling.

Response from Bennett Contracting Inc
Dealing with insurance companies and emergency repairs can be a trying affair. At Bennett we deal with hundreds of claims every year. It is our intention to go to bat for our customer and make sure the insurer covers all the of the work to fully and properly repair your home. This takes time and effort on our part and is generally appreciated by our customers. In this instance the customer was more concerned with timing and was willing to accept less repair work. The following time line by the estimator shows that we did in fact diligently work on the project. Thanks for reading this response, Gregory Bennett Jackson, President. Report to management submitted by: Steve Shanholtz, Estimator / Project Manager 2/21/11 - Received initial phone call from homeowners. 2/22/11 - 4:30 appointment to investigate damage. Discussed paperwork and a timeline of 1-1.5 weeks for estimate. 2/23/11 Steve Moyer cleaned debris from entry and secured rear gutter. 1.5 hrs. 3/2/11 - (6 working days from initial meeting.) Emailed Bennett estimate to Member (homeowner) in am. Spent the day making phone calls to Insurance company before being told homeowners have to give authorization to discuss claim with Bennett. Faxed estimate to representative at Insurance company- 2:20pm. 3/4/11 - Alex called at 1:10pm to discuss our claim vs. Insurance company. I explained insurance claim was missing debris removal, lead testing (required by law), railing repair and painting among other minor items. Alex admitted he had not received Bennett est. from Insurance headquarters. I faxed second copy at 1:15pm. 3/8/11 - Secondary adjuster from Insurance inspected home and was given copy of my estimate. I never heard from representative. 3/12/11 - Member left message that he won’t be needing Bennett’s service, please send bill to date. 1) Employee was sent very next day (less then 24hrs later) for clean up. 2) We discussed job status numerous times throughout 3 week period. Sometimes two times a day. 3) Our quote was higher than insurance company because they had not included a lot of the work scope needed for repairs. Please remember that the estimate was generated using pricing that the insurance industry sets, not Bennett Contracting. In no way was the estimate “milking” your insurance company. I gave you a copy of the estimate for review. At no time did you tell me I had included any work scope line items that were not needed for repairs. 4) Bennett does take care of all negotiations with insurance companies when they allow us to do so. I tried several times to get Insurance company personal to call me directly but they continued to call you instead.

They do all kinds of things. They were very good. There were here for 2 weeks and when they were here they were working and there was no fooling around. We got estimates from several places and that estimate was good. They were very punctual. They came everyday at the time they said they would and they worked all day. I think they were very professional. They had a supervisor who was there all the time. There were 3 guys and 1 guy was in charge and they took their lead from him.

This was a story of persistence and ultimate success. Some snafus in the ordering process caused some delays, but overall the crew and management were fastidious in their attention to detail and quality. There were some surprises of long-term water damage when they removed the chimney, which meant that the project had to be expanded from the wall up into the ceiling. We negotiated this expansion at each point, and there were no problems. A door arrived with the active panel on the wrong side. Bennett was quick to re-order and even negotiated a discount for us, since the error occurred at the factory. We appreciated the integrity of both manager and crew. Reasonable price overall for the work they did. I'm very satisfied with the outcome. The crew did a wonderful job of trim and sanding, leaving me with perfect surfaces for staining and painting. I've scheduled additional work with this company.
Description of Work: Removed a fireplace and replaced it with a wall of windows; replaced a sliding patio door with french doors; replaced two leaky skylights with two ceiling windows; repaired roof; repaired siding; repaired gutter and downspout; installed additional vents in eaves for attic circulation

They were professional; the work was fairly priced, done in a day, and done well. I am thinking of hiring Bennett again this summer to do some insulation work and to give me a quote on upgrading my windows.
Description of Work: Bennett replaced some rotted window trim on the back of the house and cloaked all the wooden trim on the exterior of the windows in aluminum

Right below the roof line, we have a fascia which was wood. it was obviously rotting and at one point a woodpecker chewed through it and built a nest in there. So I called Bennet and replace the wood and cover it with an aluminum piece. The estimator came out and said they need an electrician (which i think was the expensive part) and a carpenter to do the job. It took a couple of phone call back and forth to schedule the job. I was surprised on the price for this small job. But since the main power cable was involved, the electrician had to come out also. They finished in a couple hours and cleaned up nicely. The quality is good and they were professional.
Description of Work: The contractors removed the electric cable that provides power to the house, built out the fascia, and covered it with aluminum.

They furnished me a new estimate, which I agreed to, and proceeded with the work. The siding looks beautiful and complements the brick exterior of the main house.
Description of Work: I called Bennett Contracting to install aluminum siding on my sun room. I had wood shake singles and the wood peckers found a home in the walls. They inspected my sun room to find water damage in the walls. This required replacement of the wall studs and and a new roof.

Great experience from the estimate, through selection of materials, visiting the showroom to see samples of both windows and siding, speaking with office staff, they were all very professional.
Description of Work: Two separate jobs (replaced windows and siding) around 2005 and 2006 approximately. My last contact was in 2009 for an estimate for bathroom renovation but we decided postpone the renovation.

I have used Bennett in the past so I had high expectations. As usual they did everything in a timely and professional manner.
Description of Work: Discovered a mold problem in attic. Caused by improper vent. Bennett knew exactly what needed to be done. Installed proper vents and I decided to add an optional attic fan. At the same time installed fan and vent unit in master bath.
