BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PLUMBING

Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Water Heaters,

About us

We've called Albany its home for close to 100 years! We know this town, its people and its homes. We are unique -an older community with specific needs when it comes to heating and cooling. We appreciate the tradition and history of Albany’s older homes. But just because our residences come from the era of the model T, doesn’t mean they have to run like one. Over time, we have become the experts in making sure an older home is running at peak efficiency when it comes to energy consumption. In order to properly diagnose your home’s needs, Farrell Brothers needs to look at its infrastructure, its duct work and air flow, insulation, windows and doors. All these things come into play when heating and cooling an older home. The biggest and best piece of equipment doesn’t always serve an Albany residence in the same way it would a brand new home.

Things went very well. We called on a Thursday at 6pm and someone was at the house the following morning, did an estimate and scheduled a date for service. The repair was done within 48 hours.

As above. They came by at the time told. They fixed the problem promptly.
Description of Work: We had a very small repair problem and the only reason they were called was that the instructions for our garbage disposal were wrong. Nevertheless they were punctual and performed the job quickly. Only issue is that they are too pricey for small jobs.

They installed a new Tank less Hot Water Heater (Rinnai 751si) natural gas. The person who can by and did the estimated was very professional, explain to me in detail on the units they have and how they work. and he left literature for me to look at. I hired them to do the work and they sent me a technician over in the morning at 9:00 am and he finished around 3:30 pm. This person installed the unit according to its specification but while he was doing the installation he was slightly messy. I explained to this person that I just had the basement floor done less than a week and it was curing, to be careful not to cause any damage by dropping item. Well, I should of told him not to get water on the floor because he did. After he finished he left pieces of electrical wire and metal jackets from the nail gun on the floor and other small objects, he did not sweep them up at all. While he was installing the unit he told me he would show me how to hook up the unit for the vinegar cleaning that has to be done once a year and he failed to show me, he just left. He did test the unit to ensure that it reached the temperature it suppose to reach and that was it. I had to go behind him cleaning and mopping the floor to get the water off the floor while he was working and after he left, I then had to clean up behind him. I think this was unacceptable, if you are working you should clean behind your self not have the customer do it for you. Yes, he took out most of the large trash like to boxes that the unit can in, Styrofoam that the different parts came in and the left over copper piping before he left but he should of ensured that everything was clean up. The company is a good company and most of the folks are professional and know what they are doing and are very experience do not hold this against them because of one person, maybe he just had an off day. I will still recommend this company to family and friends if they need there service.
Description of Work: Tank less water heater purchase/installation. People recommended to me to have a tank less water heater installed. They say that it doesn't take up much room and they are cost efficient in the long run. So, I decide to contact Farrell Brother installed one for me because, I use this company to do my sewer and they did a great job and they are reasonable on pricing, so I went with them again. The price on this was a little high but I went with them any how because they are very experience in what they do.

I just joined Angie's List this morning to find a plumber. At first, I was going to go with a different (more well known) plumbing company, however, after reading a couple of bad reviews, I went in search of another. I am so glad that I went with Farrell Brothers, Inc. I called this morning, and because of a cancellation, he was here within the hour. He phoned 10 minutes prior to arriving. Upon entering my house, he put on booties over his shoes). Peter was polite, professional, informative and thorough. He explained why I was having a problem (with hard water and calcium buildup) and he was helpful as to how to prevent the problems in the future. As he finished one problem, I asked if he could look at another, and he let me know what the charges would be. Because my printer is not working, and I couldn't print the coupon, he took my word for it and decucted the $50 without the coupon. I would not hesitate to call this company again when/if needed, or to recommend them to family and friends.
Description of Work: Peter fixed a leak in my kitchen sink, a drip in the bathroom faucet, corrected low pressure problem in the shower, installed a new tank flipper in the downstairs toilet, and even calibrated my central air thermistat.

As stated above, the entire process to date went very well.
Description of Work: Water hammer occurred when any fixture valve in the house was shut off. This caused a loud "bang" to be broadcast from overhead copper piping in the basement and it was especially disturbing in rooms on the main floor. Also, I think the noise may have been amplified by resonance with heating ducts which nearly touched the copper pipes at one or two points. Peter of Farrell Brothers was the second technician to evaluate the problem and provide a written estimate. However, he was confident and persistent that he could fix the problem economically within two hours of his arrival. I agreed to let him try. He succeeded in doing this by first fixing the existing pressure regulating valve, which I think was jammed open, and then reducing (adjusting) measured hose bib pressure from 77 psig to 50 psig. Then he added approximately 12 plastic pipe hangers and wooden buffers to support exposed overhead copper pipe in the basement. We have not had any noise since. In fairness, Peter made it clear that he recommended replacing the pressure regulator, rather than relying on the older, repaired one. Our response to his estimate of four hundred dollars for installing a new regulator is pending. So this may become a two step process costing a total of six hundred and fifty dollars. I have great confidence in Peter.

Called office first thing in the am about a kitchen drain that was bubbling back up into the sink.and was advised a service rep would be out between 10:30am & 2:30pm. At 10:15am, the rep Jake called said he'd be here in about 15-20 minutes. He arrived at about 10:30am. We discussed the problem with the drain and garbage disposal. He recreated the problem and then went to work on fixing it. He snaked the drain and gave me advise on what not to put down the disposal and a good way to maintain clean drains. He cleaned up afterwards, presented the bill, and was out the door by about 11:45 am. Jake was quick, efficient, knowledgeable, and pleasant.
Description of Work: The service rep "snaked" the kitchen drain.

Upon starting-up our air conditioner at the beginning of the cooling season this year I found that the condensate from the AC unit inside the furnace was running onto the basement floor instead of out of the condensate drain. After assuring myself that the condensate drain line wasn't plugged-up, I suspected that the condensate collection pan was rusted out, I called Farrell Brothers who came over, reviewed the situation, and confirmed my diagnosis. In discussing the scope and cost of replacing the AC coil, the Farrell Brothers technician, Jake, also suggested that given the age of the furnace (22 years) that I might want to consider replacing the furnace at the same, as the installation work to remove and install a new AC coil would not be much less than that required to install a whole new furnace, and that a large part of the labor cost to replace the furnace, should I need to do so in the near future because of its age, would be duplicated. After spending some time on the internet researching expected gas-furnace life-expectancies and installation costs, I agreed with Jake's assessment and I had Farrell Brother give me a proposal for installing a new AC coil, with and without a new gas furnace (with various-priced gas furnace options). Farrell Brothers' owner, Randy Rowe, spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with me answering all of my questions about the new high-efficiency furnaces, the scope of the job, and the prices and features of various furnaces. Randy also provided me with information about rebates from the furnace manufacturer (Bryant) and from our utility company here in upstate New Yord (National Grid) and helped me to arrange 6-month/no-interest financing through Bryant. I was very pleased with the installation of the new equipment and while it wasn't able to be completed in 1 day, Farrell Brothers installers returned promptly on successive days to complete the installation. During the 3 days that it took to complete the job, I had reason to call Randy with various questions and he was always available and patient and answered all of my questions and resolved all of my issues to my satisfaction. (Small side story - when I received the financing paperwork, I noticed that the financed amount did not include a $50 Angie's List Coupon that Randy had agreed to apply to the price. I called Randy to point this out to him and I received a $50 check from Farrell Brothers the NEXT DAY!). While the AC portion of the job was completed on the first day, the furnace portion of the job was not able to be completed. The technician who started the job on the first day, Jake, was needed on another job on the second day. And although I was apprehensive about having a different person finish the job, I found that the technician who was sent to complete the job on the second day had discussed the job with Jake, was already familiar with the job, and knew exactly what work was done and what work needed to be compled. It was apparant that they had done a good job of communication. Finally, during the evening of the day that the work was completed, I noticed that there was a refrigerant leak in the ourdoor part of the AC unit, that turned-out to be a small pinhole in the copper coil. This was, coincidently, the day before we were scheduled to go on vacation. I called the Farrell Brothers answering service immediately and received a return call from technician Jake within a few minutes who, in-turn, called to discuss the situtation with Randy that evening. Long story short - we left the next day on vacation and Jake came over while we were on vacation and repaired the unit. And even though it wasn't clear that the lead had anything to do with the work that Farrell Brothers had done, Randy considered that repair work to be part of the overall furnace installation job and did not charge me anything for the work. This was the second large job we've had Farrell Brothers do for us over the 23 years we've lived in this house and we would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Removal of old air conditioning coil and gas-fired furnace and installation of new. Also, an additional repair, unrelated to the job, was performed.

I found them on Angie's List and the reviews on this company is accurate. I have first hand experience with them. When they came to my home I had two projects for them to do, one was to replace the exterior sewer pipe and the second job was to install a second sewer pipe inside the home for a second bathroom. The crew jumped right on it as soon as they arrived and it took them several days to finish. I had my whole sewer line replace because, my old one fell in and started to have issues. It was an old clay type pipe I replaced it with a top of the line Plastic pipe, they will last for ever. It took them several days but they made sure I was not interrupted in anyway during this time frame. The only time I was unable to use the bathroom was when they removed the old pipe and installed the new pipe, it took them 2 hours to do. I liked the entire crew, they showed up on time, they where very friendly and knowledgable when it came to the job. They answered all my question and went right to work. They dug up the lawn when they had to dig up the sewer pipe but the re-landscaped it and seeded they left know damages at all, I was very surprised. The owner came out and done two estimates for me, he accepted two Angies List Coupons which save me $100.00. that was great. I will be defiantly be using this company in the future if I have any other issues. Keep up the great service and thank you for everything. I give them 5 Stars rating!!! Gary O.

I was very pleased with the service rendered and told the story from start to finish in the preceding question in which I was asked to describe in detail the services performed. Bottom line, though, is that I was and am very happy with the work done by Peter of Farrell Brothers!
Description of Work: I called Farrell Brothers on Tuesday 6/27 and explained that I had two problems: 1) my bathroom sink was not draining and 2) my shower had a drip that I could not stop. I requested a service call on Thursday 6/29 and the person I was speaking with told me someone would be at my house between noon and 4:00. At approximately 1:00 p.m. I received a call from Peter of Farrell Brothers who said that he would arrive in about 5 minutes, which he did. He immediately checked out the problems. With respect to the sink, he indicated that he would more than likely have to replace part of the pipe because he said when he put his wrench on it it would break. Sure enough it did and he showed me how "glopped up" it was from years of hair, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc running through it.. He replaced it with plastic tubing which he noted would still be functioning long after he and I had left the earth. He also replaced the equally "glopped up" sink stopper and replaced the 1 1/4" trap with a 1 1/2" trap. He also took the time to instruct me on how to keep it clean by running hot water through it on a monthly basis as well as buying and using a drain cleaner on a monthly basis. He explained that the shower problem was not as easily fixed because of the Delta fixture which had been installed on the tile shower with no back door to go through to fix it. The drip was not caused by the shower head but rather because the Delta valve could no longer be shut off tightly. He explained that this particular model could not be "unscrewed" in the front even with a tool to do it. He advised of 2 ways to go.....one was cutting through the wall and installing a back door and fixing it that way. However that was not totally satisfactory because there was a light switch right there and so probably there would be problems with electrical wires. He explained another way was to cut through the tile and replace the shower valve and install a repair plate which would look normal and would provide access if there were any problems in the future. He also volunteered to give me an estimate. I also asked him to install a new Waterpik shower head I had purchased while he was there which he did. I also asked about what he recommended to clean mildew in the shower and he told me. Clearly Peter was very experienced and did excellent work. I also appreciated the time he took to explain to me why certain things had to be done and also how i could care for the drain and rid myself of mildew going forward. I definitely recommend Farrell Brothers and especially Peter who is the only one of their plumbers I have met but who I thought was and is excellent. I am going to schedule the other work for which I received the estimate at my convenience prospectively

This was the third call this year to my buddies at Farrell Brothers. We moved into this house in February and I used Farrell Brothers for several years so I knew their service would be great. They were recommended to me from a fellow employee. My ?new? house is approximately 52 years old, so I knew there was going to be some issues. The house had been vacant for just under five years. The first appointment was for a look through and to clear a clogged drain in the tub. They did recommend resetting the sump pump and adding stone to the house water trap. We went ahead with this. Good thing we went with this $215 investment. It was $250 but we used the coupon on Angies List. Anyone remember the flooding in March? Now here we were in April & the issue with the sink faucet. Thank goodness it was an easy fix. Though, we did find out the sump pump did not last out the spring season and now we will be replacing the sump pump! www.farrellbrothers.com Another great reason honest techs - turns out, a new sump pump was not needed. The pea gravel in the house trap just needed to be moved out from under the sump pump. Educated about how to improved the maintenance of the house, honest techs, great service. This is why I use Farrell Brothers.
Description of Work: At the end of April 2011, the faucet in one of our bathrooms was trickling. I do not remember exactly what the Service Rep did to repair the faucet but it was running full strength before we went onto the other bathrooms for some preventative mainentative.

Wife was taking a shower in downstairs basement bath when I notice that the grinder pump was not going off. Checked it out and discovered water all over the floor. Checked Angie's list for a plumber and found Farrell Bros. Albany, NY to be a top choice. Since I have a second bath it wasn't an emergency. Jason from Farrell Bros. came out to the house and went right to work. He did an excellent job in explaining issues surrounding the grinder pump and made repairs ,including recommendations. The grinder pump now works, but it maybe on it's way out. I wasn't pushed to get a new one. In addition, Jason advised me about other services offered by Farrell Bros. A job well done!

My phone calls were answered by a live person, not a voice mail system. Staff were friendly on the phone and I was able to have someone come out to look at a leaking toilet within a reasonable amount of time. I love them and I have had very good luck with them. I really like them. They come in the fall and also in the spring. They service, clean and check my heaters. They then come in the spring to clean my air conditioners and make sure that they are set to go. They also change the oil in my generator, which they had installed. We need the generator because we live in an area with frequent power cuts. It?s a backup generator which comes on when the power goes off. It runs on natural gas and is really nice. It provides power to the whole house. It was certainly expensive to install something that big, but we got a lot out of it. They also come out if I have a plumbing problem. I am sure their prices are competitive. A lot of our neighbors have generators. Some use the same company and some use others and they are all pretty comparable. I wouldn?t have kept using them if they weren?t excellent. The quality of their work has always been good and I have never had any problems with it. They are always on time and they are very professional too.
Description of Work: I use the services of Farrell Brothers Inc for my plumbing, heating and air conditioning needs. They come once a year to service my air conditioners and heaters both of which they had installed. They were probably here at the beginning of the heating season.

My contact was with the president, Randy Rowe, who was knowledgeable, professional and prompt. His estimate for the job was the lowest of three that I received. The crew arrived when they said they would, they continued work until the job was done. Randy estimated the job would take two days. Ultimately one of the crew came back on the morning of the third day to wrap up one of the boilers. It was a professional effort, and the installation crew were pleasant and answered my questions. It was a great experience and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone, and will use them again myself in the future.

Supervisor Randy stopped by afterward to check on the job looking for leaks if any and there were none. I am satisfied with the installation of the PEX water line, which increased my water pressure by 2 fold. I would hire them again in a New York Second.
Description of Work: REMOVED VERY OLD GALVANIZED WATER LINE AND REPLACED IT WITH PEX WATER LINE. RELACED OLD CAST IRON SEWER WASTE WATER LINE THAT WAS LEAKING BAD WITH PVC PLASTIC LINE.

The customer service rep was very responsive and got one of her plumbers to our house within the hour of my call (even though it was not a tremendous emergency). The plumber gave us an estimate and recommended that we make an appointment for the following day so he could complete the job instead of us having to pay for 2 appointments-estimate and drain re-hook up/cleaning, dishwasher hook up. He called the office to make sure we wouldn't be charge the estimate fee if we did make the service appointment for the following day. Yet, after completing work on the following day he charged us $579 instead of the $500 agreed upon the day before. A few days later, I called customer service and explained the issue. They transferred me to the owner. He was very understanding and courteous; and said that fee would be adjusted back to $500. Still, at the end of the month I was charged $540. While the work completed was great quality I can't afford to do that much follow up and still be charged more than agreed upon. I'll take that $40 bucks and call it a "charge for the lesson learned".
Description of Work: Kitchen sink drain cleaning and re-hook up, new dishwasher hook up.

Sorry for the confusion with the billing and for your inconvenience I am going to put a $50.00 gift card in the mail to you today and the $40.00 that you mention was New York state sales tax which my technician did not calculate on the original invoice - I can only assume he left his calculator home that day! My apologies and hope to hear from you again Randy Rowe President Farrell Bros. Inc.

I thought they were excellent and we were pleased with them. They billed by the job so I don?t know how they compare in price to the companies that bill by the hour.

The overall job took place with no major issues. The faucet was rusted onto the sink and was probably forty years old-which provided the technician with some challenges up front. The technician knew what he was doing. He quickly figured out how to attack the issue and did a quality job. I have used Farrell a couple of times now and I will say that they are prompt, do quality work and they provide good customer service. They are pricey, however, I would call them again for any future plumbing or A/C needs.
Description of Work: I called Farrell Brothers Plumbing because I needed to replace an old utility sink faucet that had sprung a leak and I also had them install two shut-offs on the lines that led into the utility sink.
